Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

43 (A)And immediately, while he was still speaking, (B)Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.” 45 And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, (C)“Rabbi!” And he (D)kissed him. 46 And they laid hands on him and seized him. 47 But one of those who stood by drew his (E)sword and struck the servant[a] of the high priest and cut off his ear. 48 And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 (F)Day after day I was with you in the temple (G)teaching, and you did not seize me. But (H)let the Scriptures be fulfilled.” 50 (I)And they all left him and fled.

A Young Man Flees

51 And a young man followed him, with nothing but (J)a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him, 52 but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.

Jesus Before the Council

53 (K)And (L)they led Jesus to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together. 54 (M)And (N)Peter had followed him at a distance, (O)right into (P)the courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting with (Q)the guards and (R)warming himself at the fire. 55 Now the chief priests and the whole council[b] were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none. 56 (S)For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony (T)did not agree. 57 And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying, 58 (U)“We heard him say, (V)‘I will destroy this temple (W)that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, (X)not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even about this their testimony did not agree. 60 And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?”[c] 61 But (Y)he remained silent and made no answer. (Z)Again the high priest asked him, “Are you (AA)the Christ, the Son of (AB)the Blessed?” 62 And Jesus said, “I am, and (AC)you will see the Son of Man (AD)seated at the right hand of Power, and (AE)coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 And the high priest (AF)tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need? 64 You have heard (AG)his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they (AH)all condemned him as (AI)deserving death. 65 (AJ)And some began (AK)to spit on him and (AL)to cover his face and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” And the guards received him (AM)with blows.

Jesus Arrested(A)

43 Just as he was speaking, Judas,(B) one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.

44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!”(C) and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts,(D) and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”(E) 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.(F)

51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(G)(H)

53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest.(I) There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.(J)

55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(K) were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.

57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another,(L) not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree.

60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.(M)

Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”(N)

62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”(O)

63 The high priest tore his clothes.(P) “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”

They all condemned him as worthy of death.(Q) 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.(R)
