Betrayal and Arrest

43 (A)And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, *came up, [a]accompanied by a crowd with swords and clubs who were from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders. 44 Now he who was betraying Him had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; arrest Him and lead Him away [b]under guard.” 45 And after coming, Judas immediately went to Him and *said, “(B)Rabbi!” and kissed Him. 46 And they laid hands on Him and arrested Him. 47 But one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and [c]cut off his ear. 48 And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me, as you would against a man inciting a revolt? 49 Every day I was with you (C)within the temple grounds teaching, and you did not arrest Me; but this has taken place so that the Scriptures will be fulfilled.” 50 And [d]His disciples all left Him and fled.

51 A young man was following Him, wearing nothing but a linen sheet over his naked body; and they *seized him. 52 But he [e]pulled free of the linen sheet and escaped naked.

Jesus before His Accusers

53 (D)They led Jesus away to the high priest; and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes *gathered together. 54 And Peter had followed Him at a distance, (E)right into (F)the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the [f]officers and (G)warming himself at the [g]fire. 55 Now the chief priests and the entire [h](H)Council were trying to obtain testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, and they were not finding any. 56 For many people were giving false testimony against Him, and so their testimonies were not consistent. 57 And then some stood up and began giving false testimony against Him, saying, 58 “We heard Him say, ‘(I)I will destroy this [i]temple that was made by hands, and in three days I will build another, made without hands.’” 59 And not even in this respect was their testimony consistent. 60 And then the high priest stood up and came forward and questioned Jesus, saying, “Do You not offer any answer for what these men are testifying against You?” 61 (J)But He kept silent and did not offer any answer. (K)Again the high priest was questioning Him, and *said to Him, “Are You the [j]Christ, the Son of [k]the Blessed One?” 62 And Jesus said, “I am; and you shall see (L)the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power, and (M)coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 (N)Tearing his clothes, the high priest *said, “What further need do we have of witnesses? 64 You have heard the (O)blasphemy; how does it seem to you?” And they all condemned Him as deserving of death. 65 And some began to (P)spit on Him, and [l](Q)to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists and say to Him, “(R)Prophesy!” Then the officers took custody of Him [m]and slapped Him in the face.

Peter’s Denials

66 (S)And while Peter was below in (T)the courtyard, one of the slave women of the high priest *came, 67 and seeing Peter (U)warming himself, she looked at him and *said, “You were with Jesus the (V)Nazarene as well.” 68 But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are talking about.” And he (W)went out onto the [n]porch.[o] 69 The slave woman saw him, and began once more to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them!” 70 But again (X)he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders were again saying to Peter, “You really are one of them, (Y)for you are a Galilean as well.” 71 But he began to [p]curse himself and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak!” 72 And immediately a rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had made the remark to him, “Before (Z)a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And [q]he hurried on and began to weep.

Jesus before Pilate

15 (AA)Early in the morning the chief priests with the elders, scribes, and the entire [r](AB)Council immediately held a consultation; and they bound Jesus and led Him away, and turned Him over to Pilate. (AC)Pilate questioned Him: “So You are the King of the Jews?” And He answered him, It is as you say.” And the chief priests started accusing Him [s]of many things. But Pilate questioned Him again, saying, “Do You offer nothing in answer? See how many charges they are bringing against You!” But Jesus (AD)said nothing further in answer, so Pilate was amazed.

(AE)Now at the Passover Feast he used to release for them any one prisoner whom they requested. And the one named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the rebels who had committed murder in the revolt. And the crowd went up and began asking Pilate to do as he had been accustomed to do for them. Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 10 For he was aware that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd (AF)to ask him to release Barabbas for them instead. 12 And responding again, Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?” 13 They shouted [t]back, “Crucify Him!” 14 But Pilate said to them, “Why, what [u]evil has He done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify Him!” 15 Intent on satisfying the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus (AG)flogged, he handed Him over to be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

16 (AH)Now the soldiers took Him away into (AI)the [v]palace (that is, the Praetorium), and they *called together the whole Roman [w](AJ)cohort. 17 And they *dressed Him in [x]purple, and after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on Him; 18 and they began saluting Him: “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 And they repeatedly beat His head with a [y]reed and spit on Him, and kneeling, they bowed down before Him. 20 And after they had mocked Him, they took the [z]purple cloak off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they *led Him out to crucify Him.

21 (AK)And they *compelled a passer-by coming from the country, Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and (AL)Rufus), to carry His cross.

The Crucifixion

22 (AM)Then they *brought Him to the place (AN)Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. 23 And they tried to give Him (AO)wine mixed with myrrh; but He did not take it. 24 And they *crucified Him, and *(AP)divided up His garments among themselves, casting [aa]lots for them to decide [ab]what each man would take. 25 Now it was the [ac](AQ)third hour [ad]when they crucified Him. 26 The inscription of the charge against Him [ae]read, “(AR)THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

27 And they *crucified two [af]rebels with Him, one on His right and one on His left.[ag] 29 Those passing by were [ah]hurling abuse at Him, (AS)shaking their heads and saying, “Ha! You who are going to (AT)destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save Yourself by coming down from the cross!” 31 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking Him among themselves and saying, “(AU)He saved others; [ai]He cannot save Himself! 32 Let this Christ, (AV)the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” (AW)Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him.

33 (AX)When the [aj](AY)sixth hour came, darkness [ak]fell over the whole land until the [al](AZ)ninth hour. 34 At the [am](BA)ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, (BB)Eloi, Eloi, lema sabaktanei?” which is translated, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” 35 And when some of the bystanders heard Him, they began saying, “Look! He is calling for Elijah!” 36 And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, “[an]Let us see if Elijah comes to take Him down.” 37 (BC)But Jesus let out a loud cry, and [ao]died. 38 (BD)And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 (BE)And when the centurion, who was standing [ap]right in front of Him, saw that He [aq]died in this way, he said, “Truly this man was [ar]the Son of God!”

40 (BF)Now there were also some women watching from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of [as]James (BG)the [at]Less and Joses, and (BH)Salome. 41 When He was in Galilee, they used to follow Him and (BI)serve Him; and there were many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.

Jesus Is Buried

42 (BJ)When evening had already come, since it was (BK)the preparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea came, a (BL)prominent member of the Council, who was himself also (BM)waiting for the kingdom of God; and he (BN)gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 Now Pilate wondered if He was dead by this time, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He was already dead. 45 And after learning this from (BO)the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. 46 Joseph bought a linen cloth, took Him down, wrapped Him in the linen cloth, and laid Him in a tomb which had been cut out in the rock; and he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 (BP)Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching to see where He was laid.

Jesus Arrested(A)

43 Just as he was speaking, Judas,(B) one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.

44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!”(C) and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts,(D) and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”(E) 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.(F)

51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(G)(H)

53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest.(I) There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.(J)

55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(K) were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.

57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another,(L) not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree.

60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.(M)

Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”(N)

62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”(O)

63 The high priest tore his clothes.(P) “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”

They all condemned him as worthy of death.(Q) 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.(R)

Peter Disowns Jesus(S)

66 While Peter was below in the courtyard,(T) one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself,(U) she looked closely at him.

“You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,”(V) she said.

68 But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,”(W) he said, and went out into the entryway.[a]

69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.” 70 Again he denied it.(X)

After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”(Y)

71 He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”(Z)

72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time.[b] Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice[c] you will disown me three times.”(AA) And he broke down and wept.

Jesus Before Pilate(AB)

15 Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law(AC) and the whole Sanhedrin,(AD) made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.(AE)

“Are you the king of the Jews?”(AF) asked Pilate.

“You have said so,” Jesus replied.

The chief priests accused him of many things. So again Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.”

But Jesus still made no reply,(AG) and Pilate was amazed.

Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested. A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.

“Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?”(AH) asked Pilate, 10 knowing it was out of self-interest that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas(AI) instead.

12 “What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked them.

13 “Crucify him!” they shouted.

14 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.

But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”

15 Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged,(AJ) and handed him over to be crucified.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus(AK)

16 The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace(AL) (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. 17 They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. 18 And they began to call out to him, “Hail, king of the Jews!”(AM) 19 Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out(AN) to crucify him.

The Crucifixion of Jesus(AO)

21 A certain man from Cyrene,(AP) Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus,(AQ) was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.(AR) 22 They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). 23 Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh,(AS) but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots(AT) to see what each would get.

25 It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. 26 The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews.(AU)

27 They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. [28] [d] 29 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads(AV) and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,(AW) 30 come down from the cross and save yourself!” 31 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him(AX) among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! 32 Let this Messiah,(AY) this king of Israel,(AZ) come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

The Death of Jesus(BA)

33 At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.(BB) 34 And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[e](BC)

35 When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”

36 Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar,(BD) put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said.

37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.(BE)

38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.(BF) 39 And when the centurion,(BG) who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died,[f] he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”(BH)

40 Some women were watching from a distance.(BI) Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph,[g] and Salome.(BJ) 41 In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.(BK)

The Burial of Jesus(BL)

42 It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath).(BM) So as evening approached, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council,(BN) who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God,(BO) went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. 45 When he learned from the centurion(BP) that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. 46 So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.(BQ) 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph(BR) saw where he was laid.
