The Parable of the Tenants

12 ^(A)And he began to speak to them in parables. “A man planted ^(B)a vineyard ^(C)and put a fence around it and dug a pit for the winepress and built a tower, and ^(D)leased it to tenants and ^(E)went into another country. ² When the season came, he sent a servant^[a] to the tenants to get from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. ^3 (F)And they took him and beat him and sent him away empty-handed. ^4 (G)Again ^(H)he sent to them another servant, and ^(I)they struck him on the head and ^(J)treated him shamefully. ^5 (K)And he sent another, and him they killed. And so with many others: some they beat, and some they killed. ⁶ He had still one other, ^(L)a beloved son. ^(M)Finally he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ ⁷ But those tenants said to one another, ^(N)‘This is the heir. Come, ^(O)let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ ⁸ And they took him and killed him and ^(P)threw him out of the vineyard. ⁹ What will the owner of the vineyard do? ^(Q)He will ^(R)come and destroy the tenants and ^(S)give the vineyard to others. ^10 (T)Have you not read ^(U)this Scripture:

¹² And ^(W)they were seeking to arrest him ^(X)but feared the people, for they perceived that he had told the parable against them. So they ^(Y)left him and went away.

Paying Taxes to Caesar

^13 (Z)And they sent to him some of ^(AA)the Pharisees and some of ^(AB)the Herodians, to ^(AC)trap him in his talk. ¹⁴ And they came and said to him, “Teacher, ^(AD)we know that you are true and do not care about anyone's opinion. For ^(AE)you are not swayed by appearances,^[c] but truly teach ^(AF)the way of God. Is it lawful to pay ^(AG)taxes to ^(AH)Caesar, or not? Should we pay them, or should we not?” ¹⁵ But, knowing ^(AI)their hypocrisy, he said to them, “Why ^(AJ)put me to the test? Bring me ^(AK)a denarius^[d] and let me look at it.” ¹⁶ And they brought one. And he said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said to him, “Caesar's.” ¹⁷ Jesus said to them, ^(AL)“Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” And they marveled at him.

The Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection

¹⁸ And ^(AM)Sadducees came to him, ^(AN)who say that there is no resurrection. And they asked him a question, saying, ¹⁹ “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that ^(AO)if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife, but leaves no child, the man^[e] must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. ²⁰ There were seven brothers; the first took a wife, and when he died left no offspring. ²¹ And the second took her, and died, leaving no offspring. And the third likewise. ²² And the seven left no offspring. Last of all the woman also died. ²³ In the resurrection, when they rise again, whose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife.”

²⁴ Jesus said to them, “Is this not the reason you are wrong, because ^(AP)you know neither the Scriptures nor ^(AQ)the power of God? ²⁵ For when they rise from the dead, they neither ^(AR)marry nor ^(AS)are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. ²⁶ And as for the dead being raised, ^(AT)have you not read in ^(AU)the book of Moses, in ^(AV)the passage about the bush, how God spoke to him, saying, ^(AW)‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? ²⁷ He is not God of the dead, but of the living. You are quite wrong.”

The Great Commandment

^28 (AX)And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” ²⁹ Jesus answered, “The most important is, ^(AY)‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, ^(AZ)the Lord is one. ³⁰ And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ ^31 (BA)The second is this: ^(BB)‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment ^(BC)greater than these.” ³² And the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher. You have truly said that ^(BD)he is one, and ^(BE)there is no other besides him. ³³ And to love him with all the heart and with all ^(BF)the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself, ^(BG)is much more than all ^(BH)whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” ³⁴ And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” ^(BI)And after that no one dared to ask him any more questions.

Whose Son Is the Christ?

^35 (BJ)And as ^(BK)Jesus taught in the temple, he said, “How can the scribes say that ^(BL)the Christ is the son of David? ³⁶ David himself, ^(BM)in the Holy Spirit, declared,

³⁷ David himself calls him Lord. So ^(BP)how is he his son?” And the great throng ^(BQ)heard him gladly.

Beware of the Scribes

^38 (BR)And in his teaching he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes and like greetings in the marketplaces ³⁹ and have the best seats in the synagogues and ^(BS)the places of honor at feasts, ^40 (BT)who devour widows' houses and ^(BU)for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”

The Widow's Offering

^41 (BV)And he sat down opposite ^(BW)the treasury and watched the people ^(BX)putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. ⁴² And a poor widow came and put in two ^(BY)small copper coins, which make a penny.^{[f] 43} And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, ^(BZ)this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. ⁴⁴ For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her ^(CA)poverty has put in everything she had, all ^(CB)she had to live on.”

Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple

13 ^(CC)And as he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!” ² And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? ^(CD)There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”

Signs of the End of the Age

³ And as he sat on ^(CE)the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, ^(CF)Peter and James and John and ^(CG)Andrew asked him ^(CH)privately, ⁴ “Tell us, ^(CI)when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?” ⁵ And Jesus began to say to them, ^(CJ)“See that no one leads you astray. ^6 (CK)Many will come in my name, saying, ^(CL)‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray. ⁷ And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, ^(CM)do not be alarmed. This ^(CN)must take place, but the end is not yet. ⁸ For ^(CO)nation will rise against nation, and ^(CP)kingdom against kingdom. There will be ^(CQ)earthquakes in various places; there will be ^(CR)famines. These are but the beginning of the birth pains.

^9 (CS)“But ^(CT)be on your guard. For they will deliver you over to councils, and you will be beaten ^(CU)in synagogues, and you will stand before ^(CV)governors and ^(CW)kings for my sake, ^(CX)to bear witness before them. ¹⁰ And the gospel must first be proclaimed ^(CY)to all nations. ¹¹ And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, ^(CZ)do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say ^(DA)whatever is given you in that hour, ^(DB)for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. ^12 (DC)And brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death. ^13 (DD)And you will be hated by all for my name's sake. ^(DE)But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

The Abomination of Desolation

¹⁴ “But when you see ^(DF)the abomination of desolation standing where he ought not to be (^(DG)let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. ^15 (DH)Let the one who is on ^(DI)the housetop not go down, nor enter his house, to take anything out, ¹⁶ and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. ¹⁷ And ^(DJ)alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! ¹⁸ Pray that it may not happen in winter. ¹⁹ For in those days there will be ^(DK)such ^(DL)tribulation as has not been ^(DM)from the beginning of the creation that ^(DN)God created until now, and never will be. ²⁰ And if the Lord had not cut short the days, no human being would be saved. But for ^(DO)the sake of the elect, whom ^(DP)he chose, he shortened the days. ²¹ And ^(DQ)then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it. ^22 (DR)For false christs and false prophets will arise and ^(DS)perform signs and wonders, ^(DT)to lead astray, if possible, ^(DU)the elect. ²³ But ^(DV)be on guard; ^(DW)I have told you all things beforehand.

The Coming of the Son of Man

²⁴ “But in those days, after ^(DX)that tribulation, ^(DY)the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, ²⁵ and ^(DZ)the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. ²⁶ And then they will see ^(EA)the Son of Man coming in clouds ^(EB)with great power and glory. ²⁷ And then ^(EC)he will send out the angels and ^(ED)gather ^(EE)his elect from ^(EF)the four winds, from ^(EG)the ends of the earth ^(EH)to the ends of heaven.

The Lesson of the Fig Tree

²⁸ “From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. ²⁹ So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, ^(EI)at the very gates. ^30 (EJ)Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. ^31 (EK)Heaven and earth will pass away, but ^(EL)my words will not pass away.

No One Knows That Day or Hour

³² “But concerning that day or that hour, ^(EM)no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, ^(EN)nor the Son, ^(EO)but only the Father. ^33 (EP)Be on guard, ^(EQ)keep awake.^[g] For you do not know when the time will come. ^34 (ER)It is like a man ^(ES)going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants^[h] in charge, ^(ET)each with his work, and commands ^(EU)the doorkeeper to stay awake. ^35 (EV)Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, ^(EW)in the evening, or ^(EX)at midnight, or ^(EY)when the rooster crows,^[i] or ^(EZ)in the morning— ³⁶ lest ^(FA)he come suddenly and ^(FB)find you asleep. ³⁷ And what I say to you I say to all: ^(FC)Stay awake.”

The Plot to Kill Jesus

14 ^(FD)It was now two days before ^(FE)the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes ^(FF)were seeking how to arrest him by stealth and kill him, ² for they said, “Not during the feast, ^(FG)lest there be an uproar from the people.”

Jesus Anointed at Bethany

^3 (FH)And while he was at ^(FI)Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,^[j] as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head. ⁴ There were some who said to themselves indignantly, “Why was the ointment wasted like that? ⁵ For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii^[k] and ^(FJ)given to the poor.” And they ^(FK)scolded her. ⁶ But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. ⁷ For ^(FL)you always have the poor with you, and whenever ^(FM)you want, you can do good for them. But ^(FN)you will not always have me. ^8 (FO)She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand ^(FP)for burial. ⁹ And truly, I say to you, wherever ^(FQ)the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told ^(FR)in memory of her.”

Judas to Betray Jesus

^10 (FS)Then ^(FT)Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, ^(FU)went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them. ¹¹ And when they heard it, they were glad and promised to give him money. And he sought an opportunity to ^(FV)betray him.

The Passover with the Disciples

^12 (FW)And on ^(FX)the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they ^(FY)sacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, “Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?” ¹³ And he sent ^(FZ)two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him, ¹⁴ and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, ^(GA)‘The Teacher says, Where is ^(GB)my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ ¹⁵ And he will show you ^(GC)a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us.” ¹⁶ And the disciples set out and went to the city and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

^17 (GD)And when it was evening, he came with the twelve. ¹⁸ And as they were reclining at table and eating, ^(GE)Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, ^(GF)one who is eating with me.” ¹⁹ They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?” ²⁰ He said to them, “It is ^(GG)one of the twelve, ^(GH)one who is dipping bread into the dish with me. ²¹ For the Son of Man goes ^(GI)as it is written of him, but ^(GJ)woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! ^(GK)It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”

Institution of the Lord's Supper

^22 (GL)And as they were eating, he took bread, and after ^(GM)blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; ^(GN)this is my body.” ²³ And he took a cup, and when he had ^(GO)given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. ²⁴ And he said to them, ^(GP)“This is my ^(GQ)blood of the^[l] covenant, which is poured out for ^(GR)many. ²⁵ Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

^26 (GS)And when they had sung a hymn, ^(GT)they went out to ^(GU)the Mount of Olives. ²⁷ And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written, ‘I will ^(GV)strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ ²⁸ But after I am raised up, ^(GW)I will go before you to Galilee.” ^29 (GX)Peter said to him, “Even though they all fall away, I will not.” ³⁰ And ^(GY)Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before ^(GZ)the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” ³¹ But ^(HA)he said emphatically, “If I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And they all said the same.

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

^32 (HB)And they went ^(HC)to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” ³³ And he took with him ^(HD)Peter and James and John, and began ^(HE)to be greatly distressed and troubled. ³⁴ And he said to them, ^(HF)“My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and ^(HG)watch.”^{[m] 35} And going a little farther, he fell on the ground ^(HH)and prayed that, if it were possible, ^(HI)the hour might pass from him. ³⁶ And he said, ^(HJ)“Abba, Father, ^(HK)all things are possible for you. Remove ^(HL)this cup from me. ^(HM)Yet not what I will, but what you will.” ³⁷ And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour? ^38 (HN)Watch and ^(HO)pray that you may not ^(HP)enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” ³⁹ And again he went away and prayed, ^(HQ)saying the same words. ⁴⁰ And again he came and found them sleeping, for ^(HR)their eyes were very heavy, and ^(HS)they did not know what to answer him. ⁴¹ And he came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? ^(HT)It is enough; ^(HU)the hour has come. ^(HV)The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. ⁴² Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

^43 (HW)And immediately, while he was still speaking, ^(HX)Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. ⁴⁴ Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.” ⁴⁵ And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, ^(HY)“Rabbi!” And he ^(HZ)kissed him. ⁴⁶ And they laid hands on him and seized him. ⁴⁷ But one of those who stood by drew his ^(IA)sword and struck the servant^[n] of the high priest and cut off his ear. ⁴⁸ And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? ^49 (IB)Day after day I was with you in the temple ^(IC)teaching, and you did not seize me. But ^(ID)let the Scriptures be fulfilled.” ^50 (IE)And they all left him and fled.

A Young Man Flees

⁵¹ And a young man followed him, with nothing but ^(IF)a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him, ⁵² but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.

Jesus Before the Council

^53 (IG)And ^(IH)they led Jesus to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together. ^54 (II)And ^(IJ)Peter had followed him at a distance, ^(IK)right into ^(IL)the courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting with ^(IM)the guards and ^(IN)warming himself at the fire. ⁵⁵ Now the chief priests and the whole council^[o] were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none. ^56 (IO)For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony ^(IP)did not agree. ⁵⁷ And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying, ^58 (IQ)“We heard him say, ^(IR)‘I will destroy this temple ^(IS)that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, ^(IT)not made with hands.’” ⁵⁹ Yet even about this their testimony did not agree. ⁶⁰ And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?”^{[p] 61} But ^(IU)he remained silent and made no answer. ^(IV)Again the high priest asked him, “Are you ^(IW)the Christ, the Son of ^(IX)the Blessed?” ⁶² And Jesus said, “I am, and ^(IY)you will see the Son of Man ^(IZ)seated at the right hand of Power, and ^(JA)coming with the clouds of heaven.” ⁶³ And the high priest ^(JB)tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need? ⁶⁴ You have heard ^(JC)his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they ^(JD)all condemned him as ^(JE)deserving death. ^65 (JF)And some began ^(JG)to spit on him and ^(JH)to cover his face and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” And the guards received him ^(JI)with blows.

Peter Denies Jesus

^66 (JJ)And as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came, ⁶⁷ and seeing Peter ^(JK)warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.” ⁶⁸ But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you mean.” And he went out into the gateway^[q] and ^(JL)the rooster crowed.^{[r] 69} And the servant girl saw him and began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them.” ⁷⁰ But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, “Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.” ⁷¹ But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak.” ⁷² And immediately the rooster crowed ^(JM)a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, ^(JN)“Before the rooster crows twice, you will ^(JO)deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.^[s]

Jesus Delivered to Pilate

15 ^(JP)And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests ^(JQ)held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And ^(JR)they bound Jesus and ^(JS)led him away and ^(JT)delivered him over to ^(JU)Pilate. ^2 (JV)And Pilate asked him, ^(JW)“Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, ^(JX)“You have said so.” ³ And the chief priests accused him of many things. ⁴ And Pilate again asked him, ^(JY)“Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.” ⁵ But Jesus ^(JZ)made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.

Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified

^6 (KA)Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. ⁷ And among the rebels in prison, who had ^(KB)committed murder ^(KC)in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. ⁸ And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them. ⁹ And he answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” ¹⁰ For he perceived that ^(KD)it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up. ¹¹ But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead. ¹² And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with ^(KE)the man you call the King of the Jews?” ¹³ And they cried out again, “Crucify him.” ¹⁴ And Pilate said to them, “Why? ^(KF)What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.” ¹⁵ So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having ^(KG)scourged^[t] Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

^16 (KH)And the soldiers led him away inside ^(KI)the palace (that is, ^(KJ)the governor's headquarters),^[u] and they called together the whole ^(KK)battalion.^{[v] 17} And they clothed him in ^(KL)a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. ¹⁸ And they began to salute him, ^(KM)“Hail, King of the Jews!” ¹⁹ And they were striking his head with a reed and ^(KN)spitting on him and ^(KO)kneeling down in homage to him. ²⁰ And when they had ^(KP)mocked him, they stripped him of ^(KQ)the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they ^(KR)led him out to crucify him.

The Crucifixion

^21 (KS)And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. ^22 (KT)And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). ²³ And they offered him wine mixed with ^(KU)myrrh, but he did not take it. ²⁴ And they crucified him and ^(KV)divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. ²⁵ And ^(KW)it was the third hour^[w] when they crucified him. ²⁶ And the inscription of the charge against him read, ^(KX)“The King of the Jews.” ²⁷ And with him they crucified two ^(KY)robbers, ^(KZ)one on his right and one on his left.^{[x] 29} And ^(LA)those who passed by derided him, ^(LB)wagging their heads and saying, ^(LC)“Aha! ^(LD)You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, ³⁰ save yourself, and come down from the cross!” ³¹ So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, ^(LE)“He saved others; ^(LF)he cannot save himself. ³² Let ^(LG)the Christ, ^(LH)the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may ^(LI)see and believe.” ^(LJ)Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.

The Death of Jesus

³³ And when the sixth hour^[y] had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.^{[z] 34} And at the ninth hour Jesus ^(LK)cried with a loud voice, ^(LL)“Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” ³⁵ And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” ³⁶ And someone ran and filled a sponge with ^(LM)sour wine, put it on a reed ^(LN)and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” ³⁷ And Jesus ^(LO)uttered a loud cry and ^(LP)breathed his last. ³⁸ And ^(LQ)the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. ^39 (LR)And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he^[aa] breathed his last, he said, ^(LS)“Truly this man was the Son^[ab] of God!”

⁴⁰ There were also ^(LT)women looking on ^(LU)from a distance, among whom were ^(LV)Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and ^(LW)Salome. ⁴¹ When he was in Galilee, they followed him and ^(LX)ministered to him, and there were also many other women who ^(LY)came up with him to Jerusalem.

Jesus Is Buried

The Resurrection

16 ^(MK)(ML)When the Sabbath was past, ^(MM)Mary Magdalene, ^(MN)Mary the mother of James, and ^(MO)Salome ^(MP)bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. ² And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. ³ And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away ^(MQ)the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” ⁴ And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back—^(MR)it was very large. ⁵ And ^(MS)entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, ^(MT)dressed in ^(MU)a white robe, and ^(MV)they were alarmed. ⁶ And he said to them, ^(MW)“Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. ⁷ But go, tell his disciples and Peter that ^(MX)he is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him, ^(MY)just as he told you.” ⁸ And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

⁹ [[Now when he rose early on the first day of the week, ^(MZ)he appeared first to ^(NA)Mary Magdalene, ^(NB)from whom he had cast out seven demons. ^10 (NC)She went and told those who had been with him, ^(ND)as they ^(NE)mourned and wept. ¹¹ But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they ^(NF)would not believe it.

Jesus Appears to Two Disciples

^12 (NG)After these things ^(NH)he appeared in ^(NI)another form to two of them, as they were walking into the country. ^13 (NJ)And they went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them.

The Great Commission

¹⁴ Afterward ^(NK)he appeared ^(NL)to the eleven themselves as they were reclining at table, and he rebuked them for their ^(NM)unbelief and ^(NN)hardness of heart, because ^(NO)they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. ¹⁵ And he said to them, ^(NP)“Go into all the world and ^(NQ)proclaim the gospel to ^(NR)the whole creation. ^16 (NS)Whoever believes and is ^(NT)baptized ^(NU)will be saved, but ^(NV)whoever ^(NW)does not believe will be condemned. ¹⁷ And ^(NX)these signs will accompany those who believe: ^(NY)in my name they will cast out demons; ^(NZ)they will speak in new tongues; ^18 (OA)they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; ^(OB)they will lay their hands ^(OC)on the sick, and they will recover.”
