The Demon-possessed Man Cured

5 ^(A)They came to the other side of the sea, into the region of the Gerasenes. ² When He got out of ^(B)the boat, immediately a man from the tombs ^(C)with an unclean spirit met Him. ³ He lived among the tombs; and no one was able to bind him anymore, not even with a chain, ⁴ because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him and the shackles broken in pieces; and no one was strong enough to subdue him. ⁵ Constantly, night and day, he was screaming among the tombs and in the mountains, and cutting himself with stones. ⁶ Seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up and bowed down before Him; ⁷ and shouting with a loud voice, he *said, “^[a](D)What business do You have with me, Jesus, ^(E)Son of ^(F)the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!” ⁸ For He had already been saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” ⁹ And He was asking him, “What is your name?” And he *said to Him, “My name is ^(G)Legion, for we are many.” ¹⁰ And he begged Him earnestly not to send them out of the region. ¹¹ Now there was a large herd of pigs feeding ^[b]nearby on the mountain. ¹² And the demons begged Him, saying, “Send us into the pigs so that we may enter them.” ¹³ Jesus gave them permission. And coming out, the unclean spirits entered the pigs; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, about two thousand of them; and they were drowned in the sea.

¹⁴ Their herdsmen ran away and reported it in the city and in the countryside. And the people came to see what it was that had happened. ¹⁵ And then they *came to Jesus and *saw the man who had been ^(H)demon-possessed sitting down, ^(I)clothed and ^(J)in his right mind, the very man who had previously had the “^(K)legion”; and they became frightened. ¹⁶ Those who had seen it described to them how it had happened to the ^(L)demon-possessed man, and all about the pigs. ¹⁷ And they began to ^(M)beg Him to leave their region. ^18 (N)And as He was getting into the boat, the man who had been ^(O)demon-possessed was begging Him that he might ^[c]accompany Him. ¹⁹ And He did not let him, but He *said to him, “^(P)Go home to your people and report to them ^[d]what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you.” ²⁰ And he went away and began to ^(Q)proclaim in ^(R)Decapolis ^[e]what great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed.

Jesus Sends Demons into Pigs

^28 (A)And when He came to the other side into the country of the Gadarenes, two ^(B)demon-possessed men confronted Him as they were coming out of the tombs. They were so extremely violent that no one could pass by that way. ²⁹ And they cried out, saying, “^[a](C)What business do You have with us, Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before ^[b]the time?” ³⁰ Now there was a herd of many pigs feeding at a distance from them. ³¹ And the demons begged Him, saying, “If You are going to cast us out, send us into the herd of pigs.” ³² And He said to them, “Go!” And they came out and went into the pigs; and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and ^[c]drowned in the waters. ³³ And the herdsmen ran away, and went to the city and reported everything, ^[d]including what had happened to the ^(D)demon-possessed men. ³⁴ And behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw Him, ^(E)they pleaded with Him to leave their region.

The Demon-possessed Man Cured

^26 (A)Then they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. ²⁷ And when He stepped out onto the land, a man from the city met Him who was possessed with demons; and he had not put on clothing for a long time and was not living in a house, but among the tombs. ²⁸ And seeing Jesus, he cried out and fell down before Him, and said with a loud voice, “^[a](B)What business do You have with me, Jesus, Son of ^(C)the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me!” ²⁹ For He had already commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had seized him many times; and he was bound with chains and shackles and kept under guard, and yet he would break the restraints and be driven by the demon into the desert. ³⁰ And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “^(D)Legion”; because many demons had entered him. ³¹ And they were begging Him not to command them to go away into ^(E)the abyss.

³² Now there was a herd of many pigs feeding there on the mountain; and the demons begged Him to permit them to enter ^[b]the pigs. And He gave them permission. ³³ And the demons came out of the man and entered the pigs; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into ^(F)the lake and was drowned.

³⁴ Now when the herdsmen saw what had happened, they ran away and reported everything in the city, and in the country. ³⁵ And the people came out to see what had happened; and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting down ^(G)at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they became frightened. ³⁶ Those who had seen everything reported to them how the man who had been ^(H)demon-possessed had been ^[c]made well. ³⁷ And all the ^[d]people of the territory of the Gerasenes and the surrounding region asked Him to leave them, because they were overwhelmed by great fear; and He got into a boat and returned. ^38 (I)But the man from whom the demons had gone out was begging Him that he might ^[e]accompany Him; but Jesus sent him away, saying, ³⁹ “Return to your home and describe what great things God has done for you.” So he went away, proclaiming throughout the city what great things Jesus had done for him.

Miracles and Healing

^21 (A)When Jesus had crossed over again in ^(B)the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him; and He ^[a]stayed ^(C)by the seashore. ^22 (D)And one of ^(E)the synagogue ^[b]officials, named Jairus, *came, and upon seeing Him, *fell at His feet ²³ and *pleaded with Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death; please come and ^(F)lay Your hands on her, so that she will ^[c]get well and live.” ²⁴ And He went off with him; and a large crowd was following Him and pressing in on Him.

²⁵ A woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years, ²⁶ and had endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but instead had become worse— ²⁷ after hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His ^[d]cloak. ²⁸ For she had been saying to herself, “If I just touch His garments, I will ^[e]get well.” ²⁹ And immediately the flow of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her ^(G)disease. ³⁰ And immediately Jesus, perceiving in Himself that ^(H)power from Him had gone out, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My garments?” ³¹ And His disciples said to Him, “You see the crowd pressing in on You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’” ³² And He looked around to see the woman who had done this. ³³ But the woman, fearing and trembling, aware of what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. ³⁴ And He said to her, “Daughter, ^(I)your faith has ^[f]made you well; ^(J)go in peace and be cured of your ^(K)disease.”

³⁵ While He was still speaking, people *came from the house of the ^(L)synagogue official, saying, “Your daughter has died; why bother the Teacher further?” ³⁶ But Jesus, overhearing what was being spoken, *said to the ^(M)synagogue official, “^(N)Do not be afraid, only ^[g]believe.” ³⁷ And He allowed no one to accompany Him except ^(O)Peter, ^[h]James, and John the brother of ^[i]James. ³⁸ They *came to the house of the ^(P)synagogue official, and He *saw a commotion, and people loudly weeping and wailing. ³⁹ And after entering, He *said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child has not died, but is asleep.” ⁴⁰ And they began laughing at Him. But putting them all outside, He *took along the child’s father and mother and His own companions, and *entered the room where the child was in bed. ⁴¹ And taking the child by the hand, He *said to her, “Talitha, kum!” (which translated means, “Little girl, ^(Q)I say to you, get up!”). ⁴² And immediately the girl got up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. And immediately they were completely astonished. ⁴³ And He ^(R)gave them strict orders that no one was to know about this, and He told them to have something given her to eat.

Miracles of Healing

^18 (A)While He was saying these things to them, behold, ^[a]a synagogue ^[b]official came and ^[c](B)bowed down before Him, and said, “My daughter has just died; but come and lay Your hand on her, and she will become alive again.” ¹⁹ Jesus got up from the table and began to accompany him, along with His disciples.

²⁰ And behold, a woman who had been suffering from a hemorrhage for twelve years came up behind Him, and touched ^(C)the ^[d]border of His ^[e]cloak; ²¹ for she was ^[f]saying ^[g]to herself, “If I only ^(D)touch His cloak, I will ^[h]get well.” ²² But Jesus, turning and seeing her, said, “Daughter, ^(E)take courage; ^(F)your faith has ^[i]made you well.” And ^[j]at once the woman was ^[k]made well.

²³ When Jesus came into the ^[l]official’s house and saw ^(G)the flute players and the crowd in noisy disorder, ²⁴ He said, “Leave; for the girl ^(H)has not died, but is asleep.” And they began laughing at Him. ²⁵ But ^(I)when the crowd had been sent out, He entered and ^(J)took her by the hand, and the girl ^[m]got up. ²⁶ And ^(K)this news spread throughout that land.

Miracles of Healing

^40 (A)And as Jesus was returning, the ^[a]people welcomed Him, for they had all been waiting for Him. ^41 (B)And a man named Jairus came, and he was an ^[b](C)official of the synagogue; and he fell at Jesus’ feet, and began urging Him to come to his house; ⁴² for he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying. But as He went, the crowds were pressing against Him.

⁴³ And a woman who had suffered a chronic flow of blood for twelve years, and could not be healed by anyone, ⁴⁴ came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His ^[c]cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped. ⁴⁵ And Jesus said, “Who is the one who touched Me?” And while they were all denying it, Peter said, “^(D)Master, the ^[d]people are crowding and pressing in on You.” ⁴⁶ But Jesus said, “Someone did touch Me, for I was aware that ^(E)power had left Me.” ⁴⁷ Now when the woman saw that she had not escaped notice, she came trembling and fell down before Him, and admitted in the presence of all the people the reason why she had touched Him, and how she had been immediately healed. ⁴⁸ And He said to her, “Daughter, ^(F)your faith has ^[e]made you well; ^(G)go in peace.”

⁴⁹ While He was still speaking, someone *came from the house of ^(H)the synagogue official, saying, “Your daughter has died; do not trouble the Teacher anymore.” ⁵⁰ But when Jesus heard this, He responded to him, “^(I)Do not be afraid any longer; only believe, and she will be ^[f]made well.” ⁵¹ When He came to the house, He did not allow anyone to enter with Him except Peter, John, and James, and the girl’s father and mother. ⁵² Now they were all weeping and ^(J)mourning for her; but He said, “Stop weeping, for she has not died, but ^(K)is asleep.” ⁵³ And they began laughing at Him, knowing that she had died. ⁵⁴ He, however, took her by the hand and spoke ^[g]forcefully, saying, “Child, arise!” ⁵⁵ And her spirit returned, and she got up immediately; and He ordered that something be given her to eat. ⁵⁶ Her parents were amazed; but He ^(L)instructed them to tell no one what had happened.
