Sin of the Priests

⁶ “‘A son ^(A)honors his father, and a servant his master. Then if I am a ^(B)father, where is My honor? And if I am a master, where is My ^[a]respect?’ says the Lord of armies to you, the ^(C)priests who despise My name! But you say, ‘How have we despised Your name?’

⁵ But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever I have that would help you has been ^[a]given to God,” ⁶ he is not to ^[b]honor his father or mother.’ And by this you have invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition. ⁷ You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy about you, by saying:

^7 (A)Pay to all what is due them: ^(B)tax to whom tax is due; ^(C)custom to whom custom; ^[a]respect to whom ^[b]respect; honor to whom honor.

Honor Widows

5 ^(A)Do not sharply rebuke an ^(B)older man, but rather appeal to him as a father, and to ^(C)the younger men as brothers, ² to the older women as mothers, and to the younger women as sisters, in all purity.

^2 (A)Older men are to be ^[a](B)temperate, dignified, self-controlled, ^(C)sound ^(D)in faith, in love, in ^[b]perseverance.

³ Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, ^(E)not malicious gossips nor ^(F)enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good,
