Samaritan Opposition

⁵¹ As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven,^(A) Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.^{(B) 52} And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan^(C) village to get things ready for him;

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King^(A)(B)

21 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives,^(C) Jesus sent two disciples, ² saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. ³ If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”

⁴ This took place to fulfill^(D) what was spoken through the prophet:

⁶ The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. ⁷ They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. ⁸ A very large crowd spread their cloaks^(F) on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. ⁹ The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,

Not Peace but Division^(A)

⁴⁹ “I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! ⁵⁰ But I have a baptism^(B) to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed!^(C)

³⁷ When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives,^(A) the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:

³⁹ Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”^(D)

⁴⁰ “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”^(E)

²² “And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem,^(A) not knowing what will happen to me there. ²³ I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me^(B) that prison and hardships are facing me.^{(C) 24} However, I consider my life worth nothing to me;^(D) my only aim is to finish the race^(E) and complete the task^(F) the Lord Jesus has given me^(G)—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.^(H)

¹¹ Coming over to us, he took Paul’s belt, tied his own hands and feet with it and said, “The Holy Spirit says,^(A) ‘In this way the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem will bind^(B) the owner of this belt and will hand him over to the Gentiles.’”^(C)

¹² When we heard this, we and the people there pleaded with Paul not to go up to Jerusalem. ¹³ Then Paul answered, “Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die^(D) in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.”^{(E) 14} When he would not be dissuaded, we gave up^(F) and said, “The Lord’s will be done.”^(G)

Living for God

4 Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body,^(A) arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin.^(B)
