⁵⁶ A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.”

⁵⁷ But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.

⁵⁸ A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”

“Man, I am not!” Peter replied.

⁵⁹ About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.”^(A)

⁶⁰ Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. ⁶¹ The Lord^(B) turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.”^{(C) 62} And he went outside and wept bitterly.

²⁹ Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.^{(A) 30} Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe^(B) that you came from God.”^(C)

³¹ “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. ³² “A time is coming^(D) and in fact has come when you will be scattered,^(E) each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.^(F) Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.^(G)

⁴ Love is patient,^(A) love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.^(B)

⁴ But when the kindness^(A) and love of God our Savior^(B) appeared,^{(C) 5} he saved us,^(D) not because of righteous things we had done,^(E) but because of his mercy.^(F) He saved us through the washing^(G) of rebirth and renewal^(H) by the Holy Spirit,

3 See what great love^(A) the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!^(B) And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.^(C)
