Luke 9-12

Ministry of the Twelve

9 (A)Now He called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all the demons, and the power to heal diseases. 2 And He sent them out to (B)proclaim the kingdom of God and to perform healing. 3 And He said to them, “(C)Take nothing for your journey, (D)neither a staff, nor a [a]bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not even have two [b]tunics. 4 And whatever house you enter, stay there [c]until you leave that city. 5 And as for all who do not receive you, when you leave that city, (E)shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” 6 And as they were leaving, they began going [d]throughout the villages, (F)preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.

7 (G)Now (H)Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening; and he was greatly perplexed, because it was said by some that (I)John had risen from the dead, 8 and by some that (J)Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen. 9 Herod said, “I myself had John beheaded; but who is this man about whom I hear such things?” And (K)he kept trying to see Him.

10 (L)When the apostles returned, they gave an account to Him of all that they had done. (M)And taking them with Him, He withdrew privately to a city called (N)Bethsaida. 11 But the crowds were aware of this and followed Him; and He welcomed them and began speaking to them about the kingdom of God, and curing those who had need of healing.

Five Thousand Men Fed

12 Now the day [e]was ending, and the twelve came up and said to Him, “Dismiss the crowd, so that they may go into the surrounding villages and countryside and find lodging and get [f]something to eat; because here, we are in a secluded place.” 13 But He said to them, “You give them something to eat!” But they said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless perhaps we go and buy food for all these people.” 14 (For there were about five thousand men.) But He said to His disciples, “Have them recline to eat (O)in groups of about fifty each.” 15 They did so, and had them all recline. 16 And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and, looking up to heaven, He blessed them and broke them, and gave them to the disciples again and again, to serve the crowd. 17 And they all ate and were satisfied; and [g]the broken pieces which they had left over were picked up, twelve (P)baskets full.

Peter Says Jesus is The Christ

18 (Q)And it happened that while He was (R)praying alone, the disciples were with Him, and He questioned them, saying, “Who do the [h]people say that I am?” 19 They answered and said, “John the Baptist, and others say Elijah; but others, that one of the prophets of old has risen.” 20 And He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered and said, “(S)The [i]Christ of God.” 21 But He [j](T)warned them and instructed them not to tell this to anyone, 22 (U)saying, “(V)The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised on the third day.”

23 And He was saying to them all, “(W)If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me. 24 For (X)whoever wants to save his [k]life will lose it, but whoever loses his [l]life for My sake, this is the one who will save it. 25 For what good does it do a person if he gains the whole world, but (Y)loses or forfeits himself? 26 (Z)For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory and the glory of the Father and the holy angels. 27 But I say to you truthfully, (AA)there are some of those standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”

The Transfiguration

28 (AB)About eight days after these sayings, He took along (AC)Peter, John, and James, and (AD)went up on the mountain (AE)to pray. 29 And while He was (AF)praying, the appearance of His face (AG)became different, and His clothing became white and [m]gleaming. 30 And behold, two men were talking with Him; and they were Moses and Elijah, 31 who, appearing in [n]glory, were speaking of His (AH)departure, which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and his companions (AI)had been overcome with sleep; but when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men who were standing with Him. 33 And as [o]these two men were leaving Him, Peter said to Jesus, “(AJ)Master, it is good that we are here; and (AK)let’s make three [p]tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—(AL)not realizing what he was saying. 34 But while he was saying this, a cloud [q]formed and began to overshadow them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 And then (AM)a voice came from the cloud, saying, “(AN)This is My Son, My Chosen One; listen to Him!” 36 And when the voice [r]had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And (AO)they kept silent, and reported to no one in those days any of the things which they had seen.

37 (AP)On the next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met Him. 38 And a man from the crowd shouted, saying, “Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, because he is my only son, 39 and a spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams, and it throws him into a convulsion with foaming at the mouth; and only with difficulty does it leave him, mauling him as it leaves. 40 And I begged Your disciples to cast it out, and they could not.” 41 And Jesus answered and said, “You unbelieving and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.” 42 Now while he was still approaching, the demon slammed him to the ground and threw him into a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy and gave him back to his father. 43 And they were all amazed at the [s](AQ)greatness of God.

(AR)But while everyone was astonished at all that He was doing, He said to His disciples, 44 “As for you, let these words sink into your ears: (AS)for the Son of Man is going to be [t]handed over to men.” 45 But (AT)they [u]did not understand this statement, and it was concealed from them so that they would not comprehend it; and they were afraid to ask Him about this statement.

The Test of Greatness

46 (AU)Now an argument [v]started among them as to which of them might be the greatest. 47 But Jesus, (AV)knowing [w]what they were thinking in their hearts, took a child and had him stand by His side, 48 and He said to them, “(AW)Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me; (AX)for the one who is least among all of you, this is the one who is great.”

49 (AY)John answered and said, “(AZ)Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name; and we tried to prevent him, because he does not follow along with us.” 50 But Jesus said to him, “Do not hinder him; (BA)for the one who is not against you is [x]for you.”

51 When the days were approaching for (BB)His [y]ascension, He [z]was determined (BC)to go to Jerusalem; 52 and He sent messengers on ahead of Him, and they went and entered a village of the (BD)Samaritans to [aa]make arrangements for Him. 53 And they did not receive Him, (BE)because [ab]He was traveling toward Jerusalem. 54 When His disciples (BF)James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to (BG)command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” 55 But He turned and rebuked them.[ac] 56 And they went on to another village.

Exacting Discipleship

57 (BH)As they were going on the road, (BI)someone said to Him, “I will follow You wherever You go.” 58 And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the sky have nests, but (BJ)the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” 59 And He said to another, “(BK)Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.” 60 But He said to him, “Allow the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and (BL)proclaim everywhere the kingdom of God.” 61 Another also said, “I will follow You, Lord; but (BM)first permit me to say goodbye to those at my home.” 62 But Jesus said to him, “(BN)No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”

The Seventy-two Sent Out

10 Now after this (BO)the Lord appointed [ad]seventy-two (BP)others, and sent them (BQ)in pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come. 2 And He was saying to them, “(BR)The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore plead with the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. 3 Go; (BS)behold, I am sending you out like lambs in the midst of wolves. 4 (BT)Carry no money belt, no [ae]bag, no sandals, and greet no one along the way. 5 And whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house.’ 6 And if a [af]man of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him; but if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay in [ag]that house, eating and drinking [ah]what they provide; for (BU)the laborer is deserving of his wages. Do not move from house to house. 8 Whatever city you enter and they receive you, (BV)eat what is served to you; 9 and heal those in it who are sick, and say to them, ‘(BW)The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10 But whatever city you enter and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, 11 ‘(BX)Even the dust of your city which clings to our feet we wipe off in protest against you; yet [ai]be sure of this, that (BY)the kingdom of God has come near.’ 12 I say to you, (BZ)it will be more tolerable on that day for (CA)Sodom than for that city.

13 “(CB)Woe to you, (CC)Chorazin! Woe to you, (CD)Bethsaida! For if the [aj]miracles that occurred in you had occurred in (CE)Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in [ak](CF)sackcloth and ashes. 14 But it will be more tolerable for (CG)Tyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you. 15 And you, (CH)Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will be brought down to Hades!

16 “(CI)The one who listens to you listens to Me, and (CJ)the one who rejects you rejects Me; but the one who rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.”

The Joyful Results

17 Now the [al]seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even (CK)the demons are subject to us [am]in Your name!” 18 And He said to them, “I watched (CL)Satan fall from heaven like lightning. 19 Behold, I have given you authority to (CM)walk on snakes and scorpions, and authority over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you. 20 Nevertheless, do not [an]rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that (CN)your names are recorded in heaven.”

21 (CO)At that very [ao]time He rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit, and said, “I [ap]praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for doing so was well pleasing in Your sight. 22 (CP)All things have been handed over to Me by My Father, and (CQ)no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son determines to reveal Him.”

23 (CR)Turning to the disciples, He said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see the things you see; 24 for I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see the things that you see, and did not see them, and to hear the things that you hear, and did not hear them.”

25 (CS)And behold, a [aq](CT)lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 And He said to him, “What is written in the Law? [ar]How does it read to you?” 27 And he answered, “(CU)You shall love the Lord your God [as]with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” 28 And He said to him, “You have answered correctly; (CV)do this and you will live.” 29 But wanting (CW)to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

The Good Samaritan

30 Jesus replied and said, “A man was (CX)going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he encountered robbers, and they stripped him and [at]beat him, and went away leaving him half dead. 31 And by coincidence a priest was going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 Likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a (CY)Samaritan who was on a journey came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion, 34 and came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own animal, and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 On the next day he took out two [au]denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I return, I will repay you.’ 36 Which of these three do you think [av]proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers’ hands?” 37 And he said, “The one who showed compassion to him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do [aw]the same.”

Martha and Mary

38 Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named (CZ)Martha welcomed Him into her home. 39 And she had a sister called (DA)Mary, who was also (DB)seated at the Lord’s feet, and was listening to His word. 40 But (DC)Martha was distracted with [ax]all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do the serving [ay]by myself? Then tell her to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered and said to her, “(DD)Martha, Martha, you are (DE)worried and distracted by many things; 42 (DF)but only one thing is necessary; for (DG)Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”

Instruction about Prayer

11 It happened that while [az]Jesus was praying in a certain place, when He had finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John also taught his disciples.” 2 And He said to them, “(DH)When you pray, say:

‘[ba]Father, [bb]hallowed be Your name.
[bc]Your kingdom come.
3 Give us (DI)each day our [bd]daily bread.
4 And forgive us our sins,
For we ourselves also forgive everyone who (DJ)is indebted to us.
And do not lead us into temptation.’”

5 And He said to them, “[be]Suppose one of you has a friend, and goes to him at midnight and says to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, 6 because a friend of mine has come to me from a journey and I have nothing to serve him’; 7 and from inside he answers and says, ‘Do not bother me; the door has already been shut and my children [bf]and I are in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything.’ 8 I tell you, even if he will not get up and give him anything just because he is his friend, yet (DK)because of his [bg]shamelessness he will get up and give him as much as he needs.

9 “So I say to you, [bh](DL)ask, and it will be given to you; [bi]seek, and you will find; [bj]knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, it will be opened. 11 Now [bk]which one of you fathers will his son ask for a [bl]fish, and instead of a fish, he will give him a snake? 12 Or he will even ask for an egg, and his father will give him a scorpion? 13 So (DM)if you, despite being [bm]evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will [bn]your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”

Pharisees’ Blasphemy

14 (DN)And He was casting out a mute demon; when the demon had gone out, the man who was previously unable to speak talked, and the crowds were amazed. 15 But some of them said, “He casts out the demons (DO)by (DP)Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons.” 16 Others, [bo]to test Him, (DQ)were demanding of Him a [bp]sign from heaven. 17 (DR)But He knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; and a house divided against [bq]itself falls. 18 And if (DS)Satan also has been divided against himself, how will his kingdom [br]stand? For you claim that I cast out the demons by (DT)Beelzebul. 19 Yet if by (DU)Beelzebul I cast out the demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore, they will be your judges. 20 But if I cast out the demons by [bs]the (DV)finger of God, then (DW)the kingdom of God has come upon you. 21 When [bt]a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are [bu]secure. 22 But when someone stronger than he attacks him and overpowers him, that man takes away his armor on which he had relied and distributes his plunder. 23 (DX)The one who is not with Me is against Me; and the one who does not gather with Me scatters.

24 “(DY)When the unclean spirit comes out of [bv]a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and not finding any, it then says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ 25 And when it comes, it finds it swept and put in order. 26 Then it goes and brings along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they come in and live there; and the last condition of that person becomes worse than the first.”

27 While [bw]Jesus was saying these things, one of the women in the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “(DZ)Blessed is the womb that carried You, and the breasts at which You nursed!” 28 But He said, “On the contrary, blessed are (EA)those who hear the word of God and follow it.”

The Sign of Jonah

29 Now as the crowds were increasing, He began to say, “(EB)This generation is a wicked generation; it (EC)demands a [bx]sign, and so no [by]sign will be given to it except the [bz]sign of Jonah. 30 For just as (ED)Jonah became a [ca]sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 The (EE)Queen of the South will rise up with the men of this generation at the judgment and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation at the judgment and condemn it, because (EF)they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.

33 “(EG)No one lights a lamp and puts it away in a cellar nor under a basket, but on the lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light. 34 (EH)Your eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is [cb]clear, your whole body also is full of light; but when it is [cc]bad, your body also is full of darkness. 35 So watch out that the light in you is not darkness. 36 Therefore if your whole body is full of light, without any dark part, it will be wholly illuminated, as when the lamp illuminates you with its light.”

Woes upon the Pharisees

37 Now when He had spoken, a Pharisee *asked Him to have lunch with him; and He went in and reclined at the table. 38 When the Pharisee saw this, he was surprised that Jesus had not first [cd](EI)ceremonially washed before the [ce]meal. 39 But (EJ)the Lord said to him, “Now (EK)you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the dish; but your inside is full of greed and wickedness. 40 (EL)You foolish ones, did He who made the outside not make the inside also? 41 But (EM)give that which is within as a charitable gift, and [cf]then all things are (EN)clean for you.

42 “(EO)But woe to you Pharisees! For you (EP)pay tithes of mint, rue, and every kind of garden herb, and yet you [cg]ignore justice and the love of God; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others. 43 Woe to you Pharisees! For you (EQ)love the seat of honor in the synagogues and personal greetings in the marketplaces. 44 (ER)Woe to you! For you are like [ch]unseen tombs, and the people who walk over them are unaware of it.”

45 One of the [ci](ES)lawyers *said to Him in reply, “Teacher, when You say these things, You insult us too.” 46 But He said, “Woe to you (ET)lawyers as well! For (EU)you load people with burdens that are hard to bear, [cj]while you yourselves will not even [ck]touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 (EV)Woe to you! For you build the [cl]tombs of the prophets, and it was your fathers who killed them. 48 So you are witnesses and you approve of the deeds of your fathers; because it was they who killed them, and you build their [cm]tombs. 49 For this reason also, (EW)the wisdom of God said, ‘(EX)I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill, and some they will [cn]persecute, 50 so that the blood of all the prophets, shed (EY)since the foundation of the world, may be charged [co]against this generation, 51 from (EZ)the blood of Abel to (FA)the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the house of God; yes, I tell you, it shall be charged [cp]against this generation.’ 52 Woe to you [cq](FB)lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge; (FC)you yourselves did not enter, and you hindered those who were entering.”

53 When He left that place, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be very hostile and to interrogate Him about many subjects, 54 (FD)plotting against Him (FE)to catch [cr]Him in something He might say.

God Knows and Cares

12 Under these circumstances, after [cs]so many thousands of [ct]people had gathered together that they were stepping on one another, He began saying to His disciples first of all, “(FF)Beware of the [cu]leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2 (FG)But there is nothing covered up that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known. 3 Accordingly, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have [cv]whispered in the inner rooms will be proclaimed on (FH)the housetops.

4 “Now I say to you, (FI)My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. 5 But I will warn you whom to fear: (FJ)fear the One who, after He has killed someone, has the power to throw that person into [cw](FK)hell; yes, I tell you, fear [cx]Him! 6 Are (FL)five sparrows not sold for two [cy]assaria? And yet not one of them has gone unnoticed in the sight of God. 7 (FM)But even the hairs of your head are all counted. [cz]Do not fear; you are more valuable than a great number of sparrows.

8 “Now I say to you, everyone who (FN)confesses Me before people, the Son of Man will also confess him before the angels of God; 9 but (FO)the one who denies Me before people will be denied (FP)before the angels of God. 10 (FQ)And everyone who [da]speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him. 11 Now when they bring you before (FR)the synagogues and the officials and the authorities, do not (FS)worry about how or what you are to speak in your defense, or what you are to say; 12 for (FT)the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”

Greed Denounced

13 Now someone [db]in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.” 14 But He said to him, “[dc](FU)You there—who appointed Me a judge or arbitrator over the two of you?” 15 But He said to them, “(FV)Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one is affluent does his life consist of his possessions.” 16 And He told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man was very productive. 17 And he began thinking to himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and I will store all my grain and my goods there. 19 And I will say to [dd]myself, “(FW)You have many goods stored up for many years to come; relax, eat, drink, and enjoy yourself!”’ 20 But God said to him, ‘(FX)You fool! This very night [de](FY)your soul is demanded of you; and (FZ)as for all that you have prepared, who will own it now?’ 21 Such is the one who (GA)stores up treasure for himself, and is not rich in relation to God.”

22 And He said to His disciples, “(GB)For this reason I tell you, [df]do not worry about your [dg]life, as to what you are to eat; nor for your body, as to what you are to wear. 23 For life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing. 24 Consider the (GC)ravens, that they neither sow nor reap; they have no storeroom nor (GD)barn, and yet God feeds them; how much more valuable you are than the birds! 25 And which of you by worrying can add a [dh](GE)day to his [di]life’s span? 26 Therefore if you cannot do even a very little thing, why do you worry about the other things? 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither labor nor [dj]spin; but I tell you, not even (GF)Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. 28 Now if God so clothes the grass in the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more will He clothe you? (GG)You of little faith! 29 And do not [dk]seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not (GH)keep worrying. 30 For [dl]all these things are what the nations of the world [dm]eagerly seek; and your Father knows that you need these things. 31 But [dn]seek His kingdom, and (GI)these things will be [do]provided to you. 32 [dp](GJ)Do not be afraid, (GK)little flock, because (GL)your Father has chosen to give you the kingdom.

33 “(GM)Sell your possessions and give to charity; make yourselves money belts that do not wear out, (GN)an inexhaustible treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near nor does a moth destroy. 34 For (GO)where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Be in Readiness

35 “[dq](GP)Be prepared, and keep your (GQ)lamps lit. 36 You are also to be like people who are waiting for their master when he returns from the wedding feast, so that they may immediately open the door for him when he comes and knocks. 37 Blessed are those slaves whom the master will find (GR)on the alert when he comes; truly I say to you, that (GS)he will [dr]prepare himself to serve, and have them recline at the table, and he will come up and serve them. 38 (GT)Whether he comes in the [ds]second watch, or even in the [dt]third, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves.

39 “(GU)But [du]be sure of this, that if the head of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have allowed his house to be (GV)broken into. 40 (GW)You too, be ready; because the Son of Man is coming at an hour that you do not think He will.”

41 Peter said, “Lord, are You telling this parable to us, or (GX)to everyone else as well?” 42 And (GY)the Lord said, “(GZ)Who then is the faithful and sensible (HA)steward, whom his master will put in charge of his servants, to give them their rations at the proper time? 43 Blessed is that (HB)slave whom his [dv]master finds so doing when he comes. 44 Truly I say to you that he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 45 But if that slave says in his heart, ‘My master will take a long time to come,’ and he begins to beat the other slaves, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk; 46 then the master of that slave will come on a day that he does not expect, and at an hour that he does not know, and will [dw]cut him in two, and assign [dx]him a place with the unbelievers. 47 And that slave who knew his master’s will and did not get ready or act in accordance with his will, will (HC)receive many blows, 48 but the one who did not (HD)know it, and committed acts deserving of [dy]a beating, will receive only a few blows. No, I tell you, but rather division; 52 for from now on five members in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, (HH)father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

54 And He was also saying to the crowds, “(HI)Whenever you see a cloud rising [ec]in the west, you immediately say, ‘A shower is coming,’ and so it turns out. 55 And whenever you feel a [ed]south wind blowing, you say, ‘It will be a (HJ)hot day,’ and it turns out that way. 56 You hypocrites! (HK)You know how to analyze the appearance of the earth and the sky, but how is it that you do not know how to analyze this present time?

57 “And (HL)why do you not even judge by yourselves what is right? 58 For (HM)when you are going with your accuser to appear before the magistrate, on the way, make an effort to [ee]settle with him, so that he does not drag you before the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. 59 I tell you, you will not get out of there until you have paid up [ef]the very last [eg](HN)lepton.”

9 Then (B)He called His twelve disciples together and (C)gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. 2 (D)He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. 3 (E)And He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey, neither staffs nor bag nor bread nor money; and do not have two tunics apiece.

4 (F)“Whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. 5 (G)And whoever will not receive you, when you go out of that city, (H)shake off the very dust from your feet as a testimony against them.”

6 (I)So they departed and went through the towns, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.

Herod Seeks to See Jesus(J)

7 (K)Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by Him; and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had risen from the dead, 8 and by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the old prophets had risen again. 9 Herod said, “John I have beheaded, but who is this of whom I hear such things?” (L)So he sought to see Him.

And they said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless we go and buy food for all these people.” 14 For there were about five thousand men.

Then He said to His disciples, “Make them sit down in groups of fifty.” 15 And they did so, and made them all sit down.

16 Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He (Q)blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the multitude. 17 So they all ate and were [a]filled, and twelve baskets of the leftover fragments were taken up by them.

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ(R)

19 So they answered and said, (T)“John the Baptist, but some say Elijah; and others say that one of the old prophets has risen again.”

A Boy Is Healed(AO)

37 (AP)Now it happened on the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, that a great multitude met Him. 38 Suddenly a man from the multitude cried out, saying, “Teacher, I implore You, look on my son, for he is my only child. 39 And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out; it convulses him so that he foams at the mouth; and it departs from him with great difficulty, bruising him. 40 So I implored Your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.”

41 Then Jesus answered and said, “O [f]faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and [g]bear with you? Bring your son here.” 42 And as he was still coming, the demon threw him down and convulsed him. Then Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the child, and gave him back to his father.

Jesus Again Predicts His Death(AQ)

43 And they were all amazed at the majesty of God.

But while everyone marveled at all the things which Jesus did, He said to His disciples, 44 (AR)“Let these words sink down into your ears, for the Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.” 45 (AS)But they did not understand this saying, and it was hidden from them so that they did not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask Him about this saying.

The Seventy Return with Joy

18 And He said to them, (CO)“I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, (CP)I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but [r]rather rejoice because (CQ)your names are written in heaven.”

21 (CS)In that hour Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to babes. Mary and Martha Worship and Serve

38 Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named (DI)Martha welcomed Him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, (DJ)who also (DK)sat at [w]Jesus’ feet and heard His word. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.”

41 And [x]Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. 42 But (DL)one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”

The Model Prayer(DM)

11 Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.”

2 So He said to them, “When you pray, say:

5 And He said to them, “Which of you shall have a friend, and go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves; 6 for a friend of mine has come to me on his journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; 7 and he will answer from within and say, ‘Do not trouble me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give to you’? 8 I say to you, (DP)though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs.

Keep Asking, Seeking, Knocking(DQ)

9 (DR)“So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; (DS)seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 11 (DT)If a son asks for [ac]bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? A House Divided Cannot Stand(DV)

14 (DW)And He was casting out a demon, and it was mute. So it was, when the demon had gone out, that the mute spoke; and the multitudes marveled. 15 But some of them said, (DX)“He casts out demons by [ad]Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons.”

16 Others, testing Him, (DY)sought from Him a sign from heaven. 17 (DZ)But (EA)He, knowing their thoughts, said to them: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and a house divided against a house falls. 18 If Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? An Unclean Spirit Returns(EF)

24 (EG)“When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ 25 And when he comes, he finds it swept and put in order. 26 Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and (EH)the last state of that man is worse than the first.”

Keeping the Word

27 And it happened, as He spoke these things, that a certain woman from the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, (EI)“Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts which nursed You!”

28 But He said, (EJ)“More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

It seeks a (EM)sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah [af]the prophet. 30 For as (EN)Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so also the Son of Man will be to this generation. 31 (EO)The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a (EP)greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for (EQ)they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here.

The Lamp of the Body(ER)

33 (ES)“No one, when he has lit a lamp, puts it in a secret place or under a (ET)basket, but on a lampstand, that those who come in may see the light. 34 (EU)The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is [ag]good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is [ah]bad, your body also is full of darkness. 35 Therefore take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness. 36 If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, the whole body will be full of light, as when the bright shining of a lamp gives you light.”

Woe to the Pharisees and Lawyers

37 And as He spoke, a certain Pharisee asked Him to dine with him. So He went in and sat down to eat. 38 (EV)When the Pharisee saw it, he marveled that He had not first washed before dinner.

39 (EW)Then the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees make the outside of the cup and dish clean, but (EX)your inward part is full of [ai]greed and wickedness. 40 Foolish ones! Did not (EY)He who made the outside make the inside also? 41 (EZ)But rather give alms of [aj]such things as you have; then indeed all things are clean to you.

42 (FA)“But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and (FB)pass by justice and the (FC)love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. 43 (FD)Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the [ak]best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. 44 (FE)Woe to you, [al]scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! (FF)For you are like graves which are not seen, and the men who walk over them are not aware of them.”

45 Then one of the lawyers answered and said to Him, “Teacher, by saying these things You reproach us also.”

46 And He said, “Woe to you also, lawyers! (FG)For you load men with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 (FH)Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. 48 In fact, you bear witness that you approve the deeds of your fathers; for they indeed killed them, and you build their tombs. 49 Therefore the wisdom of God also said, (FI)‘I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute,’ 50 that the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, 51 (FJ)from the blood of Abel to (FK)the blood of Zechariah who perished between the altar and the temple. Yes, I say to you, it shall be required of this generation.

52 (FL)“Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter in yourselves, and those who were entering in you hindered.”

53 [am]And as He said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to assail Him vehemently, and to cross-examine Him about many things, 54 lying in wait for Him, [an]and (FM)seeking to catch Him in something He might say, [ao]that they might accuse Him.

Beware of Hypocrisy(FN)

12 In (FO)the meantime, when an innumerable multitude of people had gathered together, so that they trampled one another, He began to say to His disciples first of all, (FP)“Beware of the [ap]leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2 (FQ)For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known. 3 Therefore whatever you have spoken in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have spoken in the ear in inner rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops.

Jesus Teaches the Fear of God(FR)

4 (FS)“And I say to you, (FT)My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. 5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, (FU)fear Him!

6 “Are not five sparrows sold for two [aq]copper coins? And (FV)not one of them is forgotten before God. 7 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

Confess Christ Before Men(FW)

8 (FX)“Also I say to you, whoever confesses Me (FY)before men, him the Son of Man also will confess before the angels of God. 9 But he who (FZ)denies Me before men will be denied before the angels of God.

10 “And (GA)anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but to him who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven.

11 (GB)“Now when they bring you to the synagogues and magistrates and authorities, do not worry about how or what you should answer, or what you should say. 12 For the Holy Spirit will (GC)teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”

The Parable of the Rich Fool

13 Then one from the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

14 But He said to him, (GD)“Man, who made Me a judge or an arbitrator over you?” 15 And He said to them, (GE)“Take heed and beware of [ar]covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”

16 Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. 17 And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’ 18 So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, (GF)“Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; (GG)eat, drink, and be merry.” ’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night (GH)your soul will be required of you; (GI)then whose will those things be which you have provided?’

21 “So is he who lays up treasure for himself, (GJ)and is not rich toward God.”

Do Not Worry(GK)

22 Then He said to His disciples, “Therefore I say to you, (GL)do not worry about your life, what you will eat; nor about the body, what you will put on. 23 Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap, which have neither storehouse nor barn; and (GM)God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds? 25 And which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? 26 If you then are not able to do the least, why [as]are you anxious for the rest? 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you, even (GN)Solomon in all his glory was not [at]arrayed like one of these. 28 If then God so clothes the grass, which today is in the field and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will He clothe you, O you of (GO)little faith?

29 “And do not seek what you should eat or what you should drink, nor have an anxious mind. 30 For all these things the nations of the world seek after, and your Father (GP)knows that you need these things. 31 (GQ)But seek [au]the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added to you.

32 “Do not fear, little flock, for (GR)it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33 (GS)Sell what you have and give (GT)alms; (GU)provide yourselves money bags which do not grow old, a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches nor moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

The Faithful Servant and the Evil Servant(GV)

35 (GW)“Let your waist be girded and (GX)your lamps burning; 36 and you yourselves be like men who wait for their master, when he will return from the wedding, that when he comes and knocks they may open to him immediately. 37 (GY)Blessed are those servants whom the master, when he comes, will find watching. Assuredly, I say to you that he will gird himself and have them sit down to eat, and will come and serve them. 38 And if he should come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. 39 (GZ)But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would [av]have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. 40 (HA)Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”

41 Then Peter said to Him, “Lord, do You speak this parable only to us, or to all people?”

42 And the Lord said, (HB)“Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his master will make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of food [aw]in due season? 43 Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. 44 (HC)Truly, I say to you that he will make him ruler over all that he has. 45 (HD)But if that servant says in his heart, ‘My master is delaying his coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and be drunk, 46 the master of that servant will come on a (HE)day when he is not looking for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the unbelievers. 47 And (HF)that servant who (HG)knew his master’s will, and did not prepare himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. 48 (HH)But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.

Christ Brings Division(HI)

49 (HJ)“I came to send fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 But (HK)I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am till it is (HL)accomplished! 51 (HM)Do you suppose that I came to give peace on earth? I tell you, not at all, (HN)but rather division. 52 (HO)For from now on five in one house will be divided: three against two, and two against three. 53 (HP)Father will be divided against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”

Discern the Time(HQ)

54 Then He also said to the multitudes, (HR)“Whenever you see a cloud rising out of the west, immediately you say, ‘A shower is coming’; and so it is. 55 And when you see the (HS)south wind blow, you say, ‘There will be hot weather’; and there is. 56 Hypocrites! You can discern the face of the sky and of the earth, but how is it you do not discern (HT)this time?

Make Peace with Your Adversary

57 “Yes, and why, even of yourselves, do you not judge what is right? 58 (HU)When you go with your adversary to the magistrate, make every effort (HV)along the way to settle with him, lest he drag you to the judge, the judge deliver you to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. 59 I tell you, you shall not depart from there till you have paid the very last mite.”

Moses’ Last Counsel

31 So Moses went and spoke these words to all Israel. 2 And he said to them, “I am (A)120 years old today; (B)I am no longer able to [a]go out and come in, and the Lord has told me, ‘(C)You shall not cross this Jordan.’ 3 (D)It is the Lord your God who is going to cross ahead of you; He Himself will destroy these nations before you, and you shall dispossess them. (E)Joshua is the one who is going to cross ahead of you, just as the Lord has spoken. 4 And the Lord will do to them just as He did to Sihon and Og, the kings of the Amorites, and to their land, when He destroyed them. 5 (F)The Lord will turn them over to you, and you will do to them in accordance with all the commandments which I have commanded you. 6 (G)Be strong and courageous, (H)do not be afraid or in dread of them, for (I)the Lord your God is the One who is going with you. (J)He will not desert you or abandon you.”

7 Then Moses called to Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, “(K)Be strong and courageous, for you will go with this people into the land which the Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you will give it to them as an inheritance. 8 And (L)the Lord is the one who is going ahead of you; He will be with you. (M)He will not desert you or abandon you. Do not fear and do not be dismayed.”

9 So Moses wrote this Law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi (N)who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the elders of Israel. 10 Then Moses commanded them, saying, “At the end of every seven years, at the time of (O)the year of the release of debts, at the (P)Feast of Booths, 11 when all Israel comes (Q)to appear before the Lord your God at (R)the place which He will choose, (S)you shall read this Law before all Israel [b]so that they hear it. 12 Assemble the people, the men, the women, the children, and the stranger who is in your [c]town, so that they may hear and (T)learn and fear the Lord your God, and be careful to [d]follow all the words of this Law. 13 And their children, who have not known, will hear and learn to fear the Lord your God, as long as you live on the land [e]which you are about to cross the Jordan to [f]possess.”

Israel Will Fall Away

14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, [g](U)the time for you to die is near; call Joshua and present yourselves at the tent of meeting, and I will commission him.” (V)So Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves at the tent of meeting. 15 (W)And the Lord appeared in the tent in a pillar of cloud, and the pillar of cloud stood at the entrance of the tent. 16 The Lord said to Moses, “Behold, (X)you are about to [h]lie down with your fathers; and (Y)this people will arise and play the prostitute with the foreign gods of the land into the midst of which they are going, and (Z)they will abandon Me and break My covenant which I have made with them. 17 (AA)Then My anger will be kindled against them on that day, and (AB)I will abandon them and (AC)hide My face from them, and they will be consumed, and many evils and troubles will find them; so they will say on that day, ‘(AD)Is it not because our God is not among us that these evils have found us?’ 18 But I will assuredly hide My face on that day because of all the evil that they will have done, for they will have turned away to other gods.

19 “Now then, (AE)write this song for yourselves, and teach it to the sons of Israel; put it [i]on their lips, so that this song may be a witness for Me against the sons of Israel. 20 (AF)For when I bring them into the land flowing with milk and honey, which I swore to their fathers, and they eat and are satisfied and (AG)become [j]prosperous, then they will turn to other gods and serve them, and spurn Me and break My covenant. 21 Then it will come about, (AH)when many evils and troubles find them, that this song will testify before them as a witness (for it shall not be forgotten from the mouth of their [k]descendants); for (AI)I know their inclination which they are [l]developing today, before I bring them into the land which I swore.” 22 (AJ)So Moses wrote down this song on the same day, and taught it to the sons of Israel.

Joshua Is Commissioned

23 (AK)Then He commissioned Joshua the son of Nun, and said, “(AL)Be strong and courageous, for you will bring the sons of Israel into the land which I swore to them, and (AM)I will be with you.”

24 It came about, when Moses finished writing the words of this Law in a book until they were complete, 25 that Moses commanded the Levites (AN)who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, saying, 26 “Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, so that it may [m]remain there as a witness against you. 27 For I know (AO)your rebellion and (AP)your [n]stubbornness; behold, as long as I have been alive with you until today, you have been rebellious against the Lord; how much more, then, after my death? 28 Assemble to me all the elders of your tribes and your officers, that I may speak these words in their hearing and (AQ)call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against them. 29 For I know that after my death you will (AR)behave very corruptly and turn from the way which I have commanded you; and evil will confront you in the latter days, because you will do that which is evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking Him to anger with the work of your hands.”

30 Then Moses spoke in the hearing of all the assembly of Israel the words of this song, until they were complete:

32 “(AS)Listen, you heavens, and I will speak;
And let the earth hear the words of my mouth!
2 (AT)May my teaching drip as the rain,
My speech trickle as the dew,
(AU)As droplets on the fresh grass,
And as the showers on the vegetation.
3 (AV)For I proclaim the name of the Lord;
(AW)Ascribe greatness to our God!
4 (AX)The Rock! His work is perfect,
(AY)For all His ways are [o]just;
(AZ)A God of faithfulness and without injustice,
Righteous and just is He.

I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation,
22 (CO)For a fire has flared in My anger,
And it burns to the lowest part of [x]Sheol,

23 ‘(CQ)I will add misfortunes to them;
(CR)I will use up My arrows on them.
24 (CS)They will be wasted by famine, and emaciated by [y]plague

(CU)And the teeth of beasts I will send against them,
(CV)With the venom of crawling things of the dust.
25 (CW)Outside the sword will make them childless,
And inside, terror—
(CX)Both young man and virgin,
The nursing child with the man of gray hair.
26 I would have said, “(CY)I will wipe them out,
(CZ)I will remove the mention of [z]their name from humanity,”
27 Had I not feared the provocation by the enemy,
That their adversaries would misjudge,
That they would say, “(DA)Our hand is [aa]triumphant,
And the Lord has not performed all this.”’

28 “(DB)For they are a nation [ab]destitute of counsel,
And there is no understanding in them.
29 (DC)If only they were wise and they understood this;
(DD)If only they would discern their [ac]future!
30 (DE)How could one chase a thousand,
And two put ten thousand to flight,
Unless their (DF)Rock had sold them,
And the Lord had given them up?
31 Indeed, their rock is not like our Rock;
(DG)Even our enemies [ad]themselves judge this.
32 For their vine is from the vine of Sodom,
And from the fields of Gomorrah;
Their grapes are grapes of (DH)poison,
Their clusters, bitter.
33 Their wine is the venom of [ae]serpents,

34 ‘(DI)Is it not stored up with Me,
Sealed up in My treasuries?
35 (DJ)Vengeance is Mine, and retribution;

(DL)For the day of their disaster is near,
And the impending things are hurrying to them.’
36 (DM)For the Lord will vindicate His people,
(DN)And will have compassion on His servants,
When He sees that their [ag]strength is gone,
And there is none remaining, bond or free.
37 And He will say, ‘(DO)Where are their gods,
The rock in which they took refuge?
38 (DP)Those who ate the fat of their sacrifices,
And drank the wine of their drink offering?
(DQ)Let them rise up and help you,
Let them be your protection!
39 (DR)See now that I, I am He,
(DS)And there is no god besides Me;
(DT)It is I who put to death and give life.
(DU)I have wounded and it is I who heal,
(DV)And there is no one who can save anyone from My hand.
40 Indeed, (DW)I raise My hand to heaven,
And say, as I live forever,
41 (DX)If I have sharpened [ah]My flashing sword,
And My hand has taken hold of justice,
(DY)I will return vengeance on My adversaries,
And I will repay those who hate Me.
42 (DZ)I will make My arrows drunk with blood,
(EA)And My sword will devour flesh,
With the blood of the slain and the captives,
From the long-haired [ai]leaders of the enemy.’
43 (EB)Rejoice, you nations, with His people;
(EC)For He will avenge the blood of His servants,
(ED)And will return vengeance on His adversaries,
(EE)And will atone for His land and His people.”

44 Then Moses came and spoke all the words of this song in the hearing of the people, he, with [aj](EF)Joshua the son of Nun. 45 When Moses had finished speaking all these words to all Israel, 46 he said to them, “(EG)Take to your heart all the words with which I am warning you today, which you will command (EH)your sons to [ak]follow carefully, all the words of this Law. 47 For it is not a [al]trivial matter for you; indeed (EI)it is your life. And (EJ)by this word you will prolong your days in the land, [am]which you are about to cross the Jordan to [an]possess.”

48 Now (EK)the Lord spoke to Moses that very same day, saying, 49 “(EL)Go up to this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab [ao]opposite Jericho, and look at the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the sons of Israel as a possession. 50 Then you are to die on the mountain where you ascend, and be (EM)gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people, 51 (EN)because you broke faith with Me in the midst of the sons of Israel at the waters of Meribah-kadesh, in the (EO)wilderness of Zin, because you did not treat Me as holy in the midst of the sons of Israel. 52 (EP)For you will see the land at a distance but (EQ)you will not go there, into the land which I am giving the sons of Israel.”

Deuteronomy 31-32

Joshua the New Leader of Israel(A)

31 Then Moses went and spoke these words to all Israel. 2 And he said to them: “I (B)am one hundred and twenty years old today. I can no longer (C)go out and come in. Also the Lord has said to me, (D)‘You shall not cross over this Jordan.’ 3 The Lord your God (E)Himself crosses over before you; He will destroy these nations from before you, and you shall dispossess them. (F)Joshua himself crosses over before you, just (G)as the Lord has said. 4 (H)And the Lord will do to them (I)as He did to Sihon and Og, the kings of the Amorites and their land, when He destroyed them. 5 (J)The Lord will give them over to you, that you may do to them according to every commandment which I have commanded you. 6 (K)Be strong and of good courage, (L)do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, (M)He is the One who goes with you. (N)He will not leave you nor forsake you.”

7 Then Moses called Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, (O)“Be strong and of good courage, for you must go with this people to the land which the Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall cause them to inherit it. 8 And the Lord, (P)He is the One who goes before you. (Q)He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed.”

The Law to Be Read Every Seven Years

9 So Moses wrote this law (R)and delivered it to the priests, the sons of Levi, (S)who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the elders of Israel. 10 And Moses commanded them, saying: “At the end of every seven years, at the appointed time in the (T)year of release, (U)at the Feast of Tabernacles, 11 when all Israel comes to (V)appear before the Lord your God in the (W)place which He chooses, (X)you shall read this law before all Israel in their hearing. 12 (Y)Gather the people together, men and women and little ones, and the stranger who is within your gates, that they may hear and that they may learn to fear the Lord your God and carefully observe all the words of this law, 13 and that their children, (Z)who have not known it, (AA)may hear and learn to fear the Lord your God as long as you live in the land which you cross the Jordan to possess.”

Prediction of Israel’s Rebellion

14 Then the Lord said to Moses, (AB)“Behold, the days approach when you must die; call Joshua, and present yourselves in the tabernacle of meeting, that (AC)I may [a]inaugurate him.”

So Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves in the tabernacle of meeting. 15 Now (AD)the Lord appeared at the tabernacle in a pillar of cloud, and the pillar of cloud stood above the door of the tabernacle.

16 And the Lord said to Moses: “Behold, you will [b]rest with your fathers; and this people will (AE)rise and (AF)play the harlot with the gods of the foreigners of the land, where they go to be among them, and they will (AG)forsake Me and (AH)break My covenant which I have made with them. 17 Then My anger shall be (AI)aroused against them in that day, and (AJ)I will forsake them, and I will (AK)hide My face from them, and they shall be [c]devoured. And many evils and troubles shall befall them, so that they will say in that day, (AL)‘Have not these evils come upon us because our God is (AM)not among us?’ 18 And (AN)I will surely hide My face in that day because of all the evil which they have done, in that they have turned to other gods.

19 “Now therefore, write down this song for yourselves, and teach it to the children of Israel; put it in their mouths, that this song may be (AO)a witness for Me against the children of Israel. 20 When I have brought them to the land flowing with milk and honey, of which I swore to their fathers, and they have eaten and filled themselves (AP)and grown fat, (AQ)then they will turn to other gods and serve them; and they will provoke Me and break My covenant. 21 Then it shall be, (AR)when many evils and troubles have come upon them, that this song will testify against them as a witness; for it will not be forgotten in the mouths of their descendants, for (AS)I know the inclination (AT)of their behavior today, even before I have brought them to the land of which I swore to give them.”

22 Therefore Moses wrote this song the same day, and taught it to the children of Israel. 23 (AU)Then He inaugurated Joshua the son of Nun, and said, (AV)“Be strong and of good courage; for you shall bring the children of Israel into the land of which I swore to them, and I will be with you.”

24 So it was, when Moses had completed writing the words of this law in a book, when they were finished, 25 that Moses commanded the Levites, who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord, saying: 26 “Take this Book of the Law, (AW)and put it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, that it may be there (AX)as a witness against you; 27 (AY)for I know your rebellion and your (AZ)stiff neck. If today, while I am yet alive with you, you have been rebellious against the Lord, then how much more after my death? 28 Gather to me all the elders of your tribes, and your officers, that I may speak these words in their hearing (BA)and call heaven and earth to witness against them. 29 For I know that after my death you will (BB)become utterly corrupt, and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you. And (BC)evil will befall you (BD)in the latter days, because you will do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger through the work of your hands.”

The Song of Moses

30 Then Moses spoke in the hearing of all the assembly of Israel the words of this song until they were ended:

32 “Give (BE)ear, O heavens, and I will speak;
And hear, O (BF)earth, the words of my mouth.
2 Let (BG)my [d]teaching drop as the rain,
My speech distill as the dew,
(BH)As raindrops on the tender herb,
And as showers on the grass.
3 For I proclaim the (BI)name of the Lord:
(BJ)Ascribe greatness to our God.
4 He is (BK)the Rock, (BL)His work is perfect;
For all His ways are justice,
(BM)A God of truth and (BN)without injustice;
Righteous and upright is He.

5 “They(BO) have corrupted themselves;
They are not His children,
Because of their blemish:
A (BP)perverse and crooked generation.
6 Do you thus (BQ)deal[e] with the Lord,
O foolish and unwise people?
Is He not (BR)your Father, who (BS)bought you?
Has He not (BT)made you and established you?

7 “Remember(BU) the days of old,
Consider the years of many generations.
(BV)Ask your father, and he will show you;
Your elders, and they will tell you:
8 When the Most High (BW)divided their inheritance to the nations,
When He (BX)separated the sons of Adam,
He set the boundaries of the peoples
According to the number of the [f]children of Israel.
9 For (BY)the Lord’s portion is His people;
Jacob is the place of His inheritance.

10 “He found him (BZ)in a desert land
And in the wasteland, a howling wilderness;
He encircled him, He instructed him,
He (CA)kept him as the [g]apple of His eye.
11 (CB)As an eagle stirs up its nest,
Hovers over its young,
Spreading out its wings, taking them up,
Carrying them on its wings,
12 So the Lord alone led him,
And there was no foreign god with him.

13 “He(CC) made him ride in the heights of the earth,
That he might eat the produce of the fields;
He made him draw honey from the rock,
And oil from the flinty rock;
14 Curds from the cattle, and milk of the flock,
(CD)With fat of lambs;
And rams of the breed of Bashan, and goats,
With the choicest wheat;
And you drank wine, the (CE)blood of the grapes.

15 “But Jeshurun grew fat and kicked;
(CF)You grew fat, you grew thick,
You are obese!
Then he (CG)forsook God who (CH)made him,
And scornfully esteemed the (CI)Rock of his salvation.
16 (CJ)They provoked Him to jealousy with foreign gods;
With [h]abominations they provoked Him to anger.
17 (CK)They sacrificed to demons, not to God,
To gods they did not know,
To new gods, new arrivals
That your fathers did not fear.
18 (CL)Of the Rock who begot you, you are unmindful,
And have (CM)forgotten the God who fathered you.

19 “And(CN) when the Lord saw it, He spurned them,
Because of the provocation of His sons and His daughters.
20 And He said: ‘I will hide My face from them,
I will see what their end will be,
For they are a perverse generation,
(CO)Children in whom is no faith.
21 (CP)They have provoked Me to jealousy by what is not God;
They have moved Me to anger (CQ)by their [i]foolish idols.
But (CR)I will provoke them to jealousy by those who are not a nation;
I will move them to anger by a foolish nation.
22 For (CS)a fire is kindled in My anger,
And shall burn to the [j]lowest [k]hell;
It shall consume the earth with her increase,
And set on fire the foundations of the mountains.

23 ‘I will (CT)heap disasters on them;
(CU)I will spend My arrows on them.
24 They shall be wasted with hunger,
Devoured by pestilence and bitter destruction;
I will also send against them the (CV)teeth of beasts,
With the poison of serpents of the dust.
25 The sword shall destroy outside;
There shall be terror within
For the young man and virgin,
The nursing child with the man of gray hairs.
26 (CW)I would have said, “I will dash them in pieces,
I will make the memory of them to cease from among men,”
27 Had I not feared the wrath of the enemy,
Lest their adversaries should misunderstand,
Lest they should say, (CX)“Our hand is high;
And it is not the Lord who has done all this.” ’

28 “For they are a nation void of counsel,
Nor is there any understanding in them.
29 (CY)Oh, that they were wise, that they understood this,
That they would consider their (CZ)latter end!
30 How could one chase a thousand,
And two put ten thousand to flight,
Unless their Rock (DA)had sold them,
And the Lord had surrendered them?
31 For their rock is not like our Rock,
(DB)Even our enemies themselves being judges.
32 For (DC)their vine is of the vine of Sodom
And of the fields of Gomorrah;
Their grapes are grapes of gall,
Their clusters are bitter.
33 Their wine is (DD)the poison of serpents,
And the cruel (DE)venom of cobras.

34 ‘Is this not (DF)laid up in store with Me,
Sealed up among My treasures?
35 (DG)Vengeance is Mine, and recompense;
Their foot shall slip in due time;
(DH)For the day of their calamity is at hand,
And the things to come hasten upon them.’

36 “For(DI) the Lord will judge His people
(DJ)And have compassion on His servants,
When He sees that their power is gone,
And (DK)there is no one remaining, bond or free.
37 He will say: (DL)‘Where are their gods,
The rock in which they sought refuge?
38 Who ate the fat of their sacrifices,
And drank the wine of their drink offering?
Let them rise and help you,
And be your refuge.

39 ‘Now see that (DM)I, even I, am He,
And (DN)there is no God besides Me;
(DO)I kill and I make alive;
I wound and I heal;
Nor is there any who can deliver from My hand.
40 For I raise My hand to heaven,
And say, “As I live forever,
41 (DP)If I [l]whet My glittering sword,
And My hand takes hold on judgment,
I will render vengeance to My enemies,
And repay those who hate Me.
42 I will make My arrows drunk with blood,
And My sword shall devour flesh,
With the blood of the slain and the captives,
From the heads of the leaders of the enemy.” ’

43 “Rejoice,(DQ) O Gentiles, with His [m]people;
For He will (DR)avenge the blood of His servants,
And render vengeance to His adversaries;
He (DS)will provide atonement for His land and His people.”

44 So Moses came with [n]Joshua the son of Nun and spoke all the words of this song in the hearing of the people. 45 Moses finished speaking all these words to all Israel, 46 and he said to them: (DT)“Set your hearts on all the words which I testify among you today, which you shall command your (DU)children to be careful to observe—all the words of this law. 47 For it is not a [o]futile thing for you, because it is your (DV)life, and by this word you shall prolong your days in the land which you cross over the Jordan to possess.”

Moses to Die on Mount Nebo

48 Then the Lord spoke to Moses that very same day, saying: 49 (DW)“Go up this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, across from Jericho; view the land of Canaan, which I give to the children of Israel as a possession; 50 and die on the mountain which you ascend, and be [p]gathered to your people, just as (DX)Aaron your brother died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people; 51 because (DY)you trespassed against Me among the children of Israel at the waters of [q]Meribah Kadesh, in the Wilderness of Zin, because you (DZ)did not hallow Me in the midst of the children of Israel. 52 (EA)Yet you shall see the land before you, though you shall not go there, into the land which I am giving to the children of Israel.”
