A Samaritan Village Rejects the Savior
51 Now it came to pass, when the time had come for (A)Him to be received up, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem, 52 and sent messengers before His face. And as they went, they entered a village of the Samaritans, to prepare for Him. 53 But (B)they did not receive Him, because His face was set for the journey to Jerusalem. 54 And when His disciples (C)James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, [a]just as (D)Elijah did?”
55 But He turned and rebuked them, [b]and said, “You do not know what manner of (E)spirit you are of. 56 [c]For (F)the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.” And they went to another village.
The Cost of Discipleship(G)
57 (H)Now it happened as they journeyed on the road, that someone said to Him, “Lord, I will follow You wherever You go.”
58 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man (I)has nowhere to lay His head.”
59 (J)Then He said to another, “Follow Me.”
But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”
60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.”
61 And another also said, “Lord, (K)I will follow You, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house.”
62 But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is (L)fit for the kingdom of God.”
The Seventy Sent Out
10 After these things the Lord appointed [d]seventy others also, and (M)sent them two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go. 2 Then He said to them, (N)“The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore (O)pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. 3 Go your way; (P)behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves. 4 (Q)Carry neither money bag, knapsack, nor sandals; and (R)greet no one along the road. 5 (S)But whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ 6 And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on it; if not, it will return to you. 7 (T)And remain in the same house, (U)eating and drinking such things as they give, for (V)the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not go from house to house. 8 Whatever city you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you. 9 (W)And heal the sick there, and say to them, (X)‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10 But whatever city you enter, and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, 11 (Y)‘The very dust of your city which clings to [e]us we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near you.’ 12 [f]But I say to you that (Z)it will be more tolerable in that Day for Sodom than for that city.
Woe to the Impenitent Cities(AA)
13 (AB)“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! (AC)For if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14 But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. 15 (AD)And you, Capernaum, [g]who are (AE)exalted to heaven, (AF)will be brought down to Hades. 16 (AG)He who hears you hears Me, (AH)he who rejects you rejects Me, and (AI)he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.”
The Seventy Return with Joy
17 Then (AJ)the [h]seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.”
18 And He said to them, (AK)“I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, (AL)I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but [i]rather rejoice because (AM)your names are written in heaven.”
Jesus Rejoices in the Spirit(AN)
21 (AO)In that hour Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight. 22 (AP)All[j] things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and (AQ)no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.”
23 Then He turned to His disciples and said privately, (AR)“Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see; 24 for I tell you (AS)that many prophets and kings have desired to see what you see, and have not seen it, and to hear what you hear, and have not heard it.”
The Parable of the Good Samaritan(AT)
25 And behold, a certain [k]lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, (AU)“Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
26 He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?”
27 So he answered and said, (AV)“ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and (AW)‘your neighbor as yourself.’ ”
28 And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and (AX)you will live.”
29 But he, wanting to (AY)justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
30 Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among [l]thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, (AZ)he passed by on the other side. 32 Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. 33 But a certain (BA)Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had (BB)compassion. 34 So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 On the next day, [m]when he departed, he took out two (BC)denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ 36 So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?”
37 And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.”
Then Jesus said to him, (BD)“Go and do likewise.”
Mary and Martha Worship and Serve
38 Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named (BE)Martha welcomed Him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, (BF)who also (BG)sat at [n]Jesus’ feet and heard His word. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.”
41 And [o]Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. 42 But (BH)one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
The Model Prayer(BI)
11 Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.”
2 So He said to them, “When you pray, say:
(BJ)Our[p] Father [q]in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
[r]Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
3 Give us day by day our daily bread.
4 And (BK)forgive us our sins,
For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And do not lead us into temptation,
[s]But deliver us from the evil one.”
A Friend Comes at Midnight
5 And He said to them, “Which of you shall have a friend, and go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves; 6 for a friend of mine has come to me on his journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; 7 and he will answer from within and say, ‘Do not trouble me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give to you’? 8 I say to you, (BL)though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs.
Keep Asking, Seeking, Knocking(BM)
9 (BN)“So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; (BO)seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 11 (BP)If a son asks for [t]bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give (BQ)good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven,(A) Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.(B) 52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan(C) village to get things ready for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John(D) saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them[a]?”(E) 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them. 56 Then he and his disciples went to another village.
The Cost of Following Jesus(F)
57 As they were walking along the road,(G) a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”
58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man(H) has no place to lay his head.”
59 He said to another man, “Follow me.”(I)
But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”(J)
61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.”(K)
62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-Two(L)(M)(N)
10 After this the Lord(O) appointed seventy-two[b] others(P) and sent them two by two(Q) ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.(R) 2 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.(S) 3 Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.(T) 4 Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.
5 “When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ 6 If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages.(U) Do not move around from house to house.
8 “When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you.(V) 9 Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God(W) has come near to you.’ 10 But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you.(X) Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.’(Y) 12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom(Z) than for that town.(AA)
13 “Woe to you,(AB) Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! 16 “Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me.”(AE)
17 The seventy-two(AF) returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.”(AG)
18 He replied, “I saw Satan(AH) fall like lightning from heaven.(AI) 19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes(AJ) and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”(AK)
21 At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.(AL) Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
22 “All things have been committed to me by my Father.(AM) No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”(AN)
23 Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”(AO)
The Parable of the Good Samaritan(AP)
25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”(AQ)
26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”
27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’[d];(AR) and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[e]”(AS)
28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”(AT)
29 But he wanted to justify himself,(AU) so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side.(AV) 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan,(AW) as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[f] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’
36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”
37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”
Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”
At the Home of Martha and Mary
38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha(AX) opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary,(AY) who sat at the Lord’s feet(AZ) listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care(BA) that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried(BB) and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[g](BC) Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Jesus’ Teaching on Prayer(BD)(BE)
11 One day Jesus was praying(BF) in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord,(BG) teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”
2 He said to them, “When you pray, say:
“‘Father,[h]
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom(BH) come.[i]
3 Give us each day our daily bread.
4 Forgive us our sins,
for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.[j](BI)
And lead us not into temptation.[k]’”(BJ)
5 Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; 6 a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.’ 7 And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’ 8 I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity[l] he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.(BK)
9 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you;(BL) seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for[m] a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

21 The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord,

He turns it wherever He wishes.
3 (C)To do righteousness and justice
Is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.
5 (E)The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty,
But those of everyone who is hasty, surely to poverty.
7 The violence of the wicked will [d]destroy them,
Because they refuse to do justice.
8 The way of [e]a guilty man is perverse;
But as for the pure, his work is right.
9 Better to dwell in a corner of a housetop,
Than in a house shared with (G)a contentious woman.
10 (H)The soul of the wicked desires evil;
His neighbor finds no favor in his eyes.
11 When the scoffer is punished, the simple is made wise;
But when the (I)wise is instructed, he receives knowledge.
12 The righteous God wisely considers the house of the wicked,
Overthrowing the wicked for their wickedness.
13 (J)Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor
Will also cry himself and not be heard.
14 A gift in secret pacifies anger,

15 It is a joy for the just to do justice,

He acts with arrogant pride.

27 (R)The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination;
How much more when he brings it with wicked intent!
28 A false witness shall perish,
But the man who hears him will speak endlessly.
29 A wicked man hardens his face,

Or counsel against the Lord.
31 The horse is prepared for the day of battle,

21 In the Lord’s hand the king’s heart is a stream of water

2 A person may think their own ways are right,
but the Lord weighs the heart.(B)
3 To do what is right and just
is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.(C)
4 Haughty eyes(D) and a proud heart—
the unplowed field of the wicked—produce sin.
5 The plans of the diligent lead to profit(E)
as surely as haste leads to poverty.
7 The violence of the wicked will drag them away,(G)
for they refuse to do what is right.

but the conduct of the innocent is upright.
9 Better to live on a corner of the roof
than share a house with a quarrelsome wife.(I)
10 The wicked crave evil;
