The First Disciples

(A)Now it happened that while the crowd was pressing around Him and listening to the word of God, He was standing by (B)the lake of Gennesaret; and He saw two boats lying at the edge of the lake; but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets. And (C)He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little distance from the land. And He sat down and continued teaching the crowds from the boat. Now when He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and (D)let down your nets for a catch.” Simon responded and said, “(E)Master, (F)we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but [a]I will do as You say and let down the nets.” And when they had done this, (G)they caught a great quantity of fish, and their nets began to tear; so they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, to the point that they were sinking. But when Simon Peter saw this, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!” For amazement had seized him and all his companions because of the catch of fish which they had taken; 10 and likewise also were [b]James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, (H)Do not fear; from now on you will be (I)catching people.” 11 When they had brought their boats to land, (J)they left everything and followed Him.

A Man with Leprosy Healed

12 (K)While He was in one of the cities, behold, there was a man [c]covered with leprosy; and when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” 13 And He reached out with His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” And immediately the leprosy left him. 14 And He ordered him to tell no one, saying, “But go and (L)show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, just as Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.” 15 But (M)the news about Him was spreading even farther, and large crowds were gathering to hear Him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16 But Jesus Himself would often slip away [d]to the [e]wilderness and (N)pray.

A Man Lowered Through a Roof

17 [f]One day He was teaching, and (O)there were some Pharisees and (P)teachers of the Law sitting there who had (Q)come from every village of Galilee and Judea, and from Jerusalem; and (R)the power of the Lord was present for Him to perform healing. 18 (S)And some men were carrying a man on a stretcher who was paralyzed; and they were trying to bring him in and to set him down in front of Him. 19 But when they did not find any way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on (T)the roof and let him down (U)through the tiles with his stretcher, into the middle of the crowd, in front of Jesus. 20 And seeing their faith, He said, [g]Friend, (V)your sins are forgiven you.” 21 The scribes and the Pharisees (W)began thinking of the implications, saying, “(X)Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? (Y)Who can forgive sins, except God alone?” 22 But Jesus, [h]aware of their thoughts, responded and said to them, “Why are you thinking this way in your hearts? 23 Which is easier, to say: ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 24 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,” He said to the (Z)man who was paralyzed, “I say to you, get up, and pick up your stretcher, and go home.” 25 And immediately he got up before them, and picked up what he had been lying on, and went home (AA)glorifying God. 26 And [i]they were all struck with astonishment and began (AB)glorifying God. They were also filled (AC)with fear, saying, “We have seen remarkable things today!”

Call of Levi (Matthew)

27 (AD)After that He went out and looked at a tax collector named [j](AE)Levi sitting in the tax office, and He said to him, “Follow Me.” 28 And he (AF)left everything behind, and got up and began following Him.

29 And (AG)Levi gave a big reception for Him in his house; and there was a large crowd of (AH)tax collectors and other people who were reclining at the table with them. 30 (AI)The Pharisees and their scribes began grumbling to His disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and [k]sinners?” 31 And Jesus answered and said to them, (AJ)It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous to repentance, but sinners.”

33 And they said to Him, “(AK)The disciples of John often fast and offer prayers, the disciples of the Pharisees also do [l]the same, but Yours eat and drink.” 34 And Jesus said to them, “You cannot make the [m]attendants of the groom fast while the groom is with them, can you? 35 (AL)But the days will come; and when the groom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.” 36 And He was also telling them a parable: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and puts it on an old garment; otherwise he will both tear the new, and the patch from the new garment will not match the old. 37 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled out, and the skins will be ruined. 38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. 39 And no one, after drinking old wine wants new; for he says, ‘The old is fine.’”

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath

(AM)Now it happened that [n]Jesus was passing through some grainfields on a Sabbath, and His disciples (AN)were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating them. But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what (AO)is not lawful on the Sabbath?” And Jesus, answering them, said, “Have you not even read (AP)what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him, how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the [o]consecrated bread, which (AQ)is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests alone, and gave it to his companions?” And He was saying to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

(AR)On another Sabbath He entered (AS)the synagogue and taught; and a man was there [p]whose right hand was withered. Now the scribes and the Pharisees (AT)were watching Him [q]closely to see if He healed on the Sabbath, so that they might find a reason to accuse Him. But He (AU)knew [r]what they were thinking, and He said to the man with the withered hand, “Get up and [s]come forward!” And he got up and [t]came forward. And Jesus said to them, “I ask you whether it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath or to do harm, to save a life or to destroy it?” 10 And after (AV)looking around at them all, He said to him, “Stretch out your hand!” And he did so; and his hand was restored. 11 But they themselves were filled with senseless rage, and began discussing together what they might do to Jesus.

Choosing the Twelve

12 Now it was [u]at this time that He went off to (AW)the mountain to (AX)pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer with God. 13 And when day came, (AY)He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also named as (AZ)apostles: 14 Simon, whom He also named Peter, and his brother Andrew; and [v]James and John; and Philip and Bartholomew; 15 and (BA)Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot; 16 Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

17 And then Jesus (BB)came down with them and stood on a level place; and there was (BC)a large crowd of His disciples, and a great multitude of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and the coastal region of (BD)Tyre and Sidon, 18 who had come to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled by unclean spirits were being cured. 19 And all the [w]people were trying to (BE)touch Him, because (BF)power was coming from Him and healing them all.

The Beatitudes

20 And He raised His eyes toward His disciples and began saying, (BG)Blessed are [x]you who are poor, for (BH)yours is the kingdom of God. 21 Blessed are [y]you who are hungry now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are [z]you who weep now, for you will laugh. 22 (BI)Blessed are you when the people hate you, and when they [aa](BJ)exclude you, and insult you, and scorn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man. 23 Rejoice on that day and (BK)jump for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven. For their fathers used to [ab]treat the prophets (BL)the same way. 24 But woe to (BM)you who are rich, for (BN)you are receiving your comfort in full. 25 Woe to you who [ac]are well-fed now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep. 26 Woe to you when all the people speak well of you; for their fathers used to [ad]treat the (BO)false prophets the same way.

27 “But I say to you who hear, (BP)love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, (BQ)pray for those who are abusive to you. 29 (BR)Whoever hits you on the cheek, offer him the other also; and whoever takes away your [ae]cloak, do not withhold your [af]tunic from him either. 30 Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back. 31 [ag](BS)Treat people the same way you want them to [ah]treat you. 32 (BT)If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 (BU)And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners in order to receive back the same amount. 35 But (BV)love your enemies and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be (BW)sons of (BX)the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil people. 36 [ai]Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

37 (BY)Do not [aj]judge, and you will not be judged; and do not [ak]condemn, and you will not be condemned; [al](BZ)pardon, and you will be pardoned. 38 Give, and it will be given to you. They will [am]pour (CA)into your lap a (CB)good measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.”

39 Now He also spoke a parable to them: (CC)A person who is blind cannot guide another who is blind, can he? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 (CD)A [an]student is not above the teacher; but everyone, when he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher. 41 Why do you look at the [ao]speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the [ap]speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the [aq]speck that is in your brother’s eye. 43 (CE)For there is no good tree that bears bad fruit, nor, [ar]on the other hand, a bad tree that bears good fruit. 44 (CF)For each tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a briar bush. 45 (CG)The good person out of the good [as]treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil person out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; (CH)for his mouth speaks from [at]that which fills his heart.

The Parable of the Builders

46 “Now (CI)why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 (CJ)Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and [au]acts on them, I will show you whom he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who [av]dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when there was a flood, the river burst against that house and yet it could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who has heard and has not acted accordingly is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation; and the river burst against it and it immediately collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.”

Jesus Heals a Centurion’s Slave

(CK)When He had completed all His [aw]teaching in the hearing of the people, (CL)He went to Capernaum.

Now a centurion’s slave, who was highly regarded by him, was sick and about to die. When he heard about Jesus, (CM)he sent some [ax]Jewish elders to Him, asking Him to come and save the life of his slave. When they came to Jesus, they strongly urged Him, saying, “He is worthy for You to grant this to him; for he loves our nation, and it was he who built us our synagogue.” Now Jesus started on His way with them; but already, when He was not yet far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to Him, “[ay]Lord, do not trouble Yourself further, for I am not worthy for You to enter under my roof; for that reason I did not even consider myself worthy to come to You; but just [az]say the word, and my servant [ba]shall be healed. For I also am a man placed under authority, with soldiers under myself; and I say to this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.” Now when Jesus heard this, He was amazed at him, and turned and said to the crowd that was following Him, “I say to you, (CN)not even in Israel have I found such great faith.” 10 And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health.

11 Soon afterward Jesus went to a city called Nain; and His disciples were going along with Him, [bb]accompanied by a large crowd. 12 Now as He approached the gate of the city, [bc]a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a sizeable crowd from the city was with her. 13 When (CO)the Lord saw her, He felt compassion for her and said to her, “Do not go on weeping.” 14 And He came up and touched the coffin; and the bearers came to a halt. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise!” 15 And the dead man sat up and began to speak. And Jesus gave him back to his mother. 16 (CP)Fear gripped them all, and they began (CQ)glorifying God, saying, “A great (CR)prophet has appeared among us!” and, “God has [bd]visited His people!” 17 (CS)And this report about Him spread throughout Judea and in all the surrounding region.

The Messengers from John

18 (CT)The disciples of John also reported to him about all these things. 19 And after summoning [be]two of his disciples, John sent them to (CU)the Lord, saying, “Are You the Coming One, or are we to [bf]look for another?” 20 When the men came to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, [bg]to ask, ‘Are You the Coming One, or are we to [bh]look for another?’” 21 At that very [bi]time He (CV)cured many people of diseases and (CW)afflictions and evil spirits; and He gave sight to many who were blind. 22 And He answered and said to them, “Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: people who were (CX)blind receive sight, people who limped walk, people with leprosy are cleansed and people who were deaf hear, dead people are raised up, and (CY)people who are poor have the gospel preached to them. 23 And blessed is [bj]anyone who does not take offense at Me.”

24 When the messengers of John had left, He began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the [bk]wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 25 [bl]But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Those who are splendidly clothed and live in luxury are found in royal palaces! 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one who is more than a prophet. 27 This is the one about whom it is written:

(CZ)Behold, I am sending My messenger [bm]ahead of You,
Who will prepare Your way before You.’

28 I say to you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is [bn]least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” 29 When all the people and the tax collectors heard this, they acknowledged (DA)God’s justice, (DB)having been baptized with (DC)the baptism of John. 30 But the Pharisees and the [bo](DD)lawyers rejected God’s purpose for themselves, not having been baptized by [bp]John.

31 “To what then shall I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like? 32 They are like children who sit in the marketplace and call to one another, and say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a song of mourning, and you did not weep.’ 33 For John the Baptist has come neither (DE)eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon!’ 34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a [bq]heavy drinker, a friend of tax collectors and [br]sinners!’ 35 And yet wisdom (DF)is vindicated by all her children.”

The Anointing in Galilee

36 Now one of the Pharisees was requesting Him to eat with him, and He entered the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37 (DG)And there was a woman in the city who was a [bs]sinner; and when she learned that He was reclining at the table in the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster vial of perfume, 38 and standing behind Him at His feet, weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears, and she wiped them with the hair of her head, and began kissing His feet and anointing them with the perfume. 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were (DH)a prophet He would know who and what sort of person this woman is who is touching Him, that she is a [bt]sinner!”

Parable of Two Debtors

40 And Jesus responded and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he [bu]replied, “Say it, Teacher.” 41 “A moneylender had two debtors: the one owed five hundred [bv](DI)denarii, and the other, fifty. 42 When they (DJ)were unable to repay, he canceled the debts of both. So which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon answered and said, “I assume the one for whom he canceled the greater debt.” And He said to him, “You have judged correctly.” 44 And turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you (DK)gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You [bw](DL)gave Me no kiss; but she has not stopped kissing My feet since the time I came in. 46 (DM)You did not [bx]anoint My head with oil, but she anointed My feet with perfume. 47 For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much; but the one who is forgiven little, loves little.” 48 And He said to her, (DN)Your sins have been forgiven.” 49 And then those who were reclining at the table with Him began saying [by]to themselves, “(DO)Who is this man who even forgives sins?” 50 And He said to the woman, (DP)Your faith has saved you; (DQ)go in peace.”

Women Support Jesus

Soon afterward, [bz]Jesus began going around from one city and village to another, (DR)proclaiming and preaching the kingdom of God. The twelve were with Him, and also (DS)some women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: (DT)Mary who was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna the wife of Chuza, (DU)Herod’s (DV)steward, and Susanna, and many others who were contributing to their support out of their private means.

Parable of the Sower

(DW)Now when a large crowd was coming together, and those from the various cities were journeying to Him, He spoke by way of a parable: “The sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell beside the road, and it was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the sky ate it up. Other seed fell on rocky soil, and when it came up, it withered away because it had no moisture. Other seed fell among the thorns; and the thorns grew up with it and choked it out. And yet other seed fell into the good soil, and grew up, and produced a crop a hundred times as much.” As He said these things, He would call out, (DX)The one who has ears to hear, [ca]let him hear.”

(DY)Now His disciples began asking Him what this parable [cb]meant. 10 And He said, (DZ)To you it has been granted to know the [cc]mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest they are told in parables, so that [cd](EA)while seeing they may not see, and [ce]while hearing they may not understand.

11 “Now this is the parable: (EB)the seed is the word of God. 12 And those beside the road are the ones who have heard, then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, so that they will not believe and be saved. 13 Those on the rocky soil are the ones who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and yet these do not have a firm root; [cf]they believe for a while, and in a time of temptation they [cg]fall away. 14 And the seed which fell among the thorns, these are the ones who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked by worries, riches, and pleasures of this life, and they bring no fruit to maturity. 15 But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word [ch]with a good and virtuous heart, and hold it firmly, and produce fruit with [ci]perseverance.

Parable of the Lamp

16 “Now (EC)no one lights a lamp and covers it over with a container, or puts it under a bed; but he puts it on a lampstand so that those who come in may see the light. 17 (ED)For nothing is concealed that will not become evident, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to light. 18 So take care how you listen; (EE)for whoever has, to him more will be given; and whoever does not have, even what he [cj]thinks he has will be taken away from him.”

19 (EF)Now His mother and brothers came to Him, and they were unable to get to Him because of the crowd. 20 And it was reported to Him, “Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, wishing to see You.” 21 But He answered and said to them, “My mother and My brothers are these (EG)who hear the word of God and do it.”

Jesus Stills the Sea

22 (EH)Now on one of those days [ck]Jesus and His disciples got into a boat, and He said to them, “Let’s cross over to the other side of (EI)the lake.” So they launched out. 23 But as they were sailing along He fell asleep; and a fierce gale of wind descended on (EJ)the lake, and they began to be swamped and to be in danger. 24 They came up to Jesus and woke Him, saying, “(EK)Master, Master, we are perishing!” And He got up and (EL)rebuked the wind and the surging [cl]waves, and they stopped, and [cm]it became calm. 25 And He said to them, “Where is your faith?” But they were fearful and amazed, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?”

The Demon-possessed Man Cured

26 (EM)Then they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. 27 And when He stepped out onto the land, a man from the city met Him who was possessed with demons; and he had not put on clothing for a long time and was not living in a house, but among the tombs. 28 And seeing Jesus, he cried out and fell down before Him, and said with a loud voice, “[cn](EN)What business do You have with me, Jesus, Son of (EO)the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me!” 29 For He had already commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had seized him many times; and he was bound with chains and shackles and kept under guard, and yet he would break the restraints and be driven by the demon into the desert. 30 And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “(EP)Legion”; because many demons had entered him. 31 And they were begging Him not to command them to go away into (EQ)the abyss.

32 Now there was a herd of many pigs feeding there on the mountain; and the demons begged Him to permit them to enter [co]the pigs. And He gave them permission. 33 And the demons came out of the man and entered the pigs; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into (ER)the lake and was drowned.

34 Now when the herdsmen saw what had happened, they ran away and reported everything in the city, and in the country. 35 And the people came out to see what had happened; and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting down (ES)at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they became frightened. 36 Those who had seen everything reported to them how the man who had been (ET)demon-possessed had been [cp]made well. 37 And all the [cq]people of the territory of the Gerasenes and the surrounding region asked Him to leave them, because they were overwhelmed by great fear; and He got into a boat and returned. 38 (EU)But the man from whom the demons had gone out was begging Him that he might [cr]accompany Him; but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return to your home and describe what great things God has done for you.” So he went away, proclaiming throughout the city what great things Jesus had done for him.

Miracles of Healing

40 (EV)And as Jesus was returning, the [cs]people welcomed Him, for they had all been waiting for Him. 41 (EW)And a man named Jairus came, and he was an [ct](EX)official of the synagogue; and he fell at Jesus’ feet, and began urging Him to come to his house; 42 for he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying. But as He went, the crowds were pressing against Him.

43 And a woman who had suffered a chronic flow of blood for twelve years, and could not be healed by anyone, 44 came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His [cu]cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped. 45 And Jesus said, “Who is the one who touched Me?” And while they were all denying it, Peter said, “(EY)Master, the [cv]people are crowding and pressing in on You.” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone did touch Me, for I was aware that (EZ)power had left Me.” 47 Now when the woman saw that she had not escaped notice, she came trembling and fell down before Him, and admitted in the presence of all the people the reason why she had touched Him, and how she had been immediately healed. 48 And He said to her, “Daughter, (FA)your faith has [cw]made you well; (FB)go in peace.”

49 While He was still speaking, someone *came from the house of (FC)the synagogue official, saying, “Your daughter has died; do not trouble the Teacher anymore.” 50 But when Jesus heard this, He responded to him, (FD)Do not be afraid any longer; only believe, and she will be [cx]made well.” 51 When He came to the house, He did not allow anyone to enter with Him except Peter, John, and James, and the girl’s father and mother. 52 Now they were all weeping and (FE)mourning for her; but He said, “Stop weeping, for she has not died, but (FF)is asleep.” 53 And they began laughing at Him, knowing that she had died. 54 He, however, took her by the hand and spoke [cy]forcefully, saying, “Child, arise!” 55 And her spirit returned, and she got up immediately; and He ordered that something be given her to eat. 56 Her parents were amazed; but He (FG)instructed them to tell no one what had happened.

Four Fishermen Called as Disciples(A)

So (B)it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to (C)hear the word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, and saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets. Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And He (D)sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.

When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, (E)“Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”

But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught (F)nothing; nevertheless (G)at Your word I will let down the net.” And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, (H)“Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!”

For he and all who were with him were (I)astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken; 10 and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid. (J)From now on you will catch men.” 11 So when they had brought their boats to land, (K)they [a]forsook all and followed Him.

Jesus Cleanses a Leper(L)

12 (M)And it happened when He was in a certain city, that behold, a man who was full of (N)leprosy saw Jesus; and he fell on his face and [b]implored Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”

13 Then He put out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” (O)Immediately the leprosy left him. 14 (P)And He charged him to tell no one, “But go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, as a testimony to them, (Q)just as Moses commanded.”

15 However, (R)the report went around concerning Him all the more; and (S)great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by Him of their infirmities. 16 (T)So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and (U)prayed.

Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralytic(V)

17 Now it happened on a certain day, as He was teaching, that there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come out of every town of Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present [c]to heal them. 18 (W)Then behold, men brought on a bed a man who was paralyzed, whom they sought to bring in and lay before Him. 19 And when they could not find how they might bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the housetop and let him down with his bed through the tiling into the midst (X)before Jesus.

20 When He saw their faith, He said to him, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.”

21 (Y)And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? (Z)Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

22 But when Jesus (AA)perceived their thoughts, He answered and said to them, “Why are you reasoning in your hearts? 23 Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise up and walk’? 24 But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the man who was paralyzed, (AB)“I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.”

25 Immediately he rose up before them, took up what he had been lying on, and departed to his own house, (AC)glorifying God. 26 And they were all amazed, and they (AD)glorified God and were filled with fear, saying, “We have seen strange things today!”

Matthew the Tax Collector(AE)

27 (AF)After these things He went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, (AG)“Follow Me.” 28 So he left all, rose up, and (AH)followed Him.

29 (AI)Then Levi gave Him a great feast in his own house. And (AJ)there were a great number of tax collectors and others who sat down with them. 30 [d]And their scribes and the Pharisees [e]complained against His disciples, saying, (AK)“Why do You eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

31 Jesus answered and said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32 (AL)I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”

Jesus Is Questioned About Fasting(AM)

33 Then they said to Him, (AN)“Why[f] do the disciples of John fast often and make prayers, and likewise those of the Pharisees, but Yours eat and drink?”

34 And He said to them, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while the (AO)bridegroom is with them? 35 But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them; then they will fast in those days.”

36 (AP)Then He spoke a parable to them: “No one [g]puts a piece from a new garment on an old one; otherwise the new makes a tear, and also the piece that was taken out of the new does not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 But new wine must be put into new wineskins, [h]and both are preserved. 39 And no one, having drunk old wine, [i]immediately desires new; for he says, ‘The old is [j]better.’ ”

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(AQ)

Now (AR)it happened [k]on the second Sabbath after the first that He went through the grainfields. And His disciples plucked the heads of grain and ate them, rubbing them in their hands. And some of the Pharisees said to them, “Why are you doing (AS)what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?”

But Jesus answering them said, “Have you not even read this, (AT)what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he went into the house of God, took and ate the showbread, and also gave some to those with him, (AU)which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat?” And He said to them, “The Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”

Healing on the Sabbath(AV)

(AW)Now it happened on another Sabbath, also, that He entered the synagogue and taught. And a man was there whose right hand was withered. So the scribes and Pharisees watched Him closely, whether He would (AX)heal on the Sabbath, that they might find an (AY)accusation against Him. But He (AZ)knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, “Arise and stand here.” And he arose and stood. Then Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one thing: (BA)Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or [l]to destroy?” 10 And when He had looked around at them all, He said to [m]the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored [n]as whole as the other. 11 But they were filled with rage, and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.

The Twelve Apostles(BB)

12 Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in (BC)prayer to God. 13 And when it was day, He called His disciples to Himself; (BD)and from them He chose (BE)twelve whom He also named apostles: 14 Simon, (BF)whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew; 15 Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called the Zealot; 16 Judas (BG)the son of James, and (BH)Judas Iscariot who also became a traitor.

Jesus Heals a Great Multitude(BI)

17 And He came down with them and stood on a level place with a crowd of His disciples (BJ)and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear Him and be healed of their diseases, 18 as well as those who were tormented with unclean spirits. And they were healed. 19 And the whole multitude (BK)sought to (BL)touch Him, for (BM)power went out from Him and healed them all.

The Beatitudes(BN)

20 Then He lifted up His eyes toward His disciples, and said:

(BO)“Blessed are you poor,
For yours is the kingdom of God.
21 (BP)Blessed are you who hunger now,
For you shall be (BQ)filled.[o]
(BR)Blessed are you who weep now,
For you shall (BS)laugh.
22 (BT)Blessed are you when men hate you,
And when they (BU)exclude you,
And revile you, and cast out your name as evil,
For the Son of Man’s sake.
23 (BV)Rejoice in that day and leap for joy!
For indeed your reward is great in heaven,
For (BW)in like manner their fathers did to the prophets.

Jesus Pronounces Woes

24 “But(BX) woe to you (BY)who are rich,
For (BZ)you have received your consolation.
25 (CA)Woe to you who are full,
For you shall hunger.
(CB)Woe to you who laugh now,
For you shall mourn and (CC)weep.
26 (CD)Woe [p]to you when [q]all men speak well of you,
For so did their fathers to the false prophets.

Love Your Enemies(CE)

27 (CF)“But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 (CG)bless those who curse you, and (CH)pray for those who spitefully use you. 29 (CI)To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. (CJ)And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either. 30 (CK)Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back. 31 (CL)And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.

32 (CM)“But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 (CN)And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back. 35 But (CO)love your enemies, (CP)do good, and (CQ)lend, [r]hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and (CR)you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. 36 (CS)Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.

Do Not Judge(CT)

37 (CU)“Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. (CV)Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 (CW)Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your (CX)bosom. For (CY)with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”

39 And He spoke a parable to them: (CZ)“Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into the ditch? 40 (DA)A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher. 41 (DB)And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the plank in your own eye? 42 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the plank that is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck that is in your brother’s eye.

A Tree Is Known by Its Fruit(DC)

43 (DD)“For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 For (DE)every tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. 45 (DF)A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil [s]treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out (DG)of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

Build on the Rock(DH)

46 (DI)“But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say? 47 (DJ)Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: 48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was [t]founded on the rock. 49 But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it [u]fell. And the ruin of that house was great.”

Jesus Heals a Centurion’s Servant(DK)

Now when He concluded all His sayings in the hearing of the people, He (DL)entered Capernaum. And a certain centurion’s servant, who was dear to him, was sick and ready to die. So when he heard about Jesus, he sent elders of the Jews to Him, pleading with Him to come and heal his servant. And when they came to Jesus, they begged Him earnestly, saying that the one for whom He should do this was deserving, “for he loves our nation, and has built us a synagogue.”

Then Jesus went with them. And when He was already not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to Him, saying to Him, “Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof. Therefore I did not even think myself worthy to come to You. But (DM)say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man placed under (DN)authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.

When Jesus heard these things, He marveled at him, and turned around and said to the crowd that followed Him, “I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!” 10 And those who were sent, returning to the house, found the servant well [v]who had been sick.

Jesus Raises the Son of the Widow of Nain

11 Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd. 12 And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, He had (DO)compassion on her and said to her, (DP)“Do not weep.” 14 Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, (DQ)arise.” 15 So he who was dead (DR)sat up and began to speak. And He (DS)presented him to his mother.

16 (DT)Then fear [w]came upon all, and they (DU)glorified God, saying, (DV)“A great prophet has risen up among us”; and, (DW)“God has visited His people.” 17 And this report about Him went throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region.

John the Baptist Sends Messengers to Jesus(DX)

18 (DY)Then the disciples of John reported to him concerning all these things. 19 And John, calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to [x]Jesus, saying, “Are You (DZ)the Coming One, or [y]do we look for another?”

20 When the men had come to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, ‘Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?’ ” 21 And that very hour He cured many of [z]infirmities, afflictions, and evil spirits; and to many blind He gave sight.

22 (EA)Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: (EB)that the blind (EC)see, the lame (ED)walk, the lepers are (EE)cleansed, the deaf (EF)hear, the dead are raised, (EG)the poor have the gospel preached to them. 23 And blessed is he who is not [aa]offended because of Me.”

24 (EH)When the messengers of John had departed, He began to speak to the multitudes concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 25 But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed those who are gorgeously appareled and live in luxury are in kings’ courts. 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is he of whom it is written:

(EI)‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face,
Who will prepare Your way before You.’

28 For I say to you, among those born of women there is [ab]not a (EJ)greater prophet than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”

29 And when all the people heard Him, even the tax collectors [ac]justified God, (EK)having been baptized with the baptism of John. 30 But the Pharisees and [ad]lawyers rejected (EL)the will of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.

31 [ae]And the Lord said, (EM)“To what then shall I liken the men of this generation, and what are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, saying:

‘We played the flute for you,
And you did not dance;
We mourned to you,
And you did not weep.’

33 For (EN)John the Baptist came (EO)neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man has come (EP)eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look, a glutton and a [af]winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ 35 (EQ)But wisdom is justified by all her children.”

A Sinful Woman Forgiven

36 (ER)Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to eat. 37 And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, 38 and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil. 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, (ES)“This Man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner.”

40 And Jesus answered and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.”

So he said, “Teacher, say it.”

41 “There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred (ET)denarii, and the other fifty. 42 And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?”

43 Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.”

And He said to him, “You have rightly judged.” 44 Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no (EU)water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. 45 You gave Me no (EV)kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. 46 (EW)You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. 47 (EX)Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.”

48 Then He said to her, (EY)“Your sins are forgiven.”

49 And those who sat at the table with Him began to say to themselves, (EZ)“Who is this who even forgives sins?”

50 Then He said to the woman, (FA)“Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”

Many Women Minister to Jesus

Now it came to pass, afterward, that He went through every city and village, preaching and [ag]bringing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with Him, and (FB)certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and [ah]infirmities—Mary called Magdalene, (FC)out of whom had come seven demons, and Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others who provided for [ai]Him from their [aj]substance.

The Parable of the Sower(FD)

(FE)And when a great multitude had gathered, and they had come to Him from every city, He spoke by a parable: “A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell by the wayside; and it was trampled down, and the birds of the air devoured it. Some fell on rock; and as soon as it sprang up, it withered away because it lacked moisture. And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up with it and choked it. But others fell on good ground, sprang up, and yielded [ak]a crop a hundredfold.” When He had said these things He cried, (FF)“He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”

The Purpose of Parables(FG)

(FH)Then His disciples asked Him, saying, “What does this parable mean?”

10 And He said, “To you it has been given to know the [al]mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest it is given in parables, that

(FI)‘Seeing they may not see,
And hearing they may not understand.’

The Parable of the Sower Explained(FJ)

11 (FK)“Now the parable is this: The seed is the (FL)word of God. 12 Those by the wayside are the ones who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. 13 But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of [am]temptation fall away. 14 Now the ones that fell among thorns are those who, when they have heard, go out and are choked with cares, (FM)riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity. 15 But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with (FN)patience.[an]

The Parable of the Revealed Light(FO)

16 (FP)“No one, when he has lit a lamp, covers it with a vessel or puts it under a bed, but sets it on a lampstand, that those who enter may see the (FQ)light. 17 (FR)For nothing is secret that will not be (FS)revealed, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to light. 18 Therefore take heed how you hear. (FT)For whoever has, to him more will be given; and whoever does not have, even what he [ao]seems to (FU)have will be taken from him.”

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers Come to Him(FV)

19 (FW)Then His mother and brothers came to Him, and could not approach Him because of the crowd. 20 And it was told Him by some, who said, “Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see You.”

21 But He answered and said to them, “My mother and My brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it.”

Wind and Wave Obey Jesus(FX)

22 (FY)Now it happened, on a certain day, that He got into a boat with His disciples. And He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side of the lake.” And they launched out. 23 But as they sailed He fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water, and were in [ap]jeopardy. 24 And they came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!”

Then He arose and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water. And they ceased, and there was a calm. 25 But He said to them, (FZ)“Where is your faith?”

And they were afraid, and marveled, saying to one another, (GA)“Who can this be? For He commands even the winds and water, and they obey Him!”

A Demon-Possessed Man Healed(GB)

26 (GC)Then they sailed to the country of the [aq]Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee. 27 And when He stepped out on the land, there met Him a certain man from the city who had demons [ar]for a long time. And he wore no clothes, nor did he live in a house but in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he (GD)cried out, fell down before Him, and with a loud voice said, (GE)“What have I to do with (GF)You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me!” 29 For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had often seized him, and he was kept under guard, bound with chains and shackles; and he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the wilderness.

30 Jesus asked him, saying, “What is your name?”

And he said, “Legion,” because many demons had entered him. 31 And they begged Him that He would not command them to go out (GG)into the abyss.

32 Now a herd of many (GH)swine was feeding there on the mountain. So they begged Him that He would permit them to enter them. And He permitted them. 33 Then the demons went out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the lake and drowned.

34 When those who fed them saw what had happened, they fled and told it in the city and in the country. 35 Then they went out to see what had happened, and came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had departed, (GI)sitting at the (GJ)feet of Jesus, clothed and in his (GK)right mind. And they were afraid. 36 They also who had seen it told them by what means he who had been demon-possessed was [as]healed. 37 (GL)Then the whole multitude of the surrounding region of the [at]Gadarenes (GM)asked Him to (GN)depart from them, for they were seized with great (GO)fear. And He got into the boat and returned.

38 Now (GP)the man from whom the demons had departed begged Him that he might be with Him. But Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return to your own house, and tell what great things God has done for you.” And he went his way and proclaimed throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him.

A Girl Restored to Life and a Woman Healed

40 So it was, when Jesus returned, that the multitude welcomed Him, for they were all waiting for Him. 41 (GQ)And behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue. And he fell down at Jesus’ feet and begged Him to come to his house, 42 for he had an only daughter about twelve years of age, and she (GR)was dying.

But as He went, the multitudes thronged Him. 43 (GS)Now a woman, having a (GT)flow of blood for twelve years, who had spent all her livelihood on physicians and could not be healed by any, 44 came from behind and (GU)touched the border of His garment. And immediately her flow of blood stopped.

45 And Jesus said, “Who touched Me?”

When all denied it, Peter [au]and those with him said, “Master, the multitudes throng and press You, [av]and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’

46 But Jesus said, “Somebody touched Me, for I perceived (GV)power going out from Me.” 47 Now when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling; and falling down before Him, she declared to Him in the presence of all the people the reason she had touched Him and how she was healed immediately.

48 And He said to her, “Daughter, [aw]be of good cheer; (GW)your faith has made you well. (GX)Go in peace.”

49 (GY)While He was still speaking, someone came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house, saying to him, “Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the [ax]Teacher.”

50 But when Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying, “Do not be afraid; (GZ)only believe, and she will be made well.” 51 When He came into the house, He permitted no one to go [ay]in except [az]Peter, James, and John, and the father and mother of the girl. 52 Now all wept and mourned for her; but He said, (HA)“Do not weep; she is not dead, (HB)but sleeping.” 53 And they ridiculed Him, knowing that she was dead.

54 But He [ba]put them all outside, took her by the hand and called, saying, “Little girl, (HC)arise.” 55 Then her spirit returned, and she arose immediately. And He commanded that she be given something to eat. 56 And her parents were astonished, but (HD)He charged them to tell no one what had happened.

Laws of the Sanctuary

12 “These are the statutes and the judgments which you shall carefully [a]follow in the land which the Lord, the God of your fathers, has given you to possess [b](A)as long as you live on the [c]earth. You shall utterly destroy all the places where the nations whom you are going to dispossess serve their gods, on the (B)high mountains, on the hills, and under every leafy tree. And (C)you shall tear down their altars and smash their memorial stones to pieces, and burn their [d]Asherim in the fire, and cut to pieces the carved images of their gods; and you shall (D)eliminate their name from that place. You shall not act this way toward the Lord your God. (E)But you shall seek the Lord at the place which the Lord your God will choose from all your tribes, to establish His name there for His dwelling, and you shall come there. You shall bring there your burnt offerings, your sacrifices, (F)your tithes, the [e]contribution of your hand, your vowed offerings, your [f]voluntary offerings, and the firstborn of your herd and of your flock. There you and your households shall eat before the Lord your God, and (G)rejoice in all [g]your undertakings in which the Lord your God has blessed you.

“You shall not do at all what we are doing here today, (H)everyone doing whatever is right in his own eyes; for you have not as yet come to (I)the resting place and the (J)inheritance which the Lord your God is giving you. 10 When you cross the Jordan and live in the land which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, and (K)He gives you rest from all your enemies around you so that you live in security, 11 (L)then it shall come about that the place in which the Lord your God will choose for His name to dwell, there you shall bring everything that I command you: your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and the [h]contribution of your hand, and all your choice vowed offerings which you will vow to the Lord. 12 And you shall (M)rejoice before the Lord your God, you and your sons and daughters, your male and female slaves, and the (N)Levite who is within your gates, since (O)he has no portion or inheritance with you.

13 (P)Be careful that you do not offer your burnt offerings in any cultic place that you see, 14 but only in the place which the Lord chooses in one of your tribes: there you shall offer your burnt offerings, and there you shall do everything that I command you.

15 (Q)However, you may slaughter and eat meat within any of your gates, [i]whatever you desire, according to the blessing of the Lord your God which He has given you; the unclean and the clean alike may eat it, as (R)the gazelle and the deer. 16 (S)Only you shall not eat the blood; (T)you are to pour it out on the ground like water. 17 (U)You are not allowed to eat within your gates the tithe of your grain, new wine, or oil, or the firstborn of your herd or flock, or any of your vowed offerings which you vow, or your [j]voluntary offerings, or the [k]contribution of your hand. 18 But (V)you shall eat them before the Lord your God in (W)the place which the Lord your God will choose, you and your son and daughter, and your male and female slaves, and the (X)Levite who is within your gates; and you shall (Y)rejoice before the Lord your God in all [l]your undertakings. 19 (Z)Be careful that you do not abandon the Levite [m]as long as you live in your land.

20 “When the Lord your God extends your border (AA)as He has [n]promised you, and you say, ‘I will eat meat,’ because [o]you desire to eat meat, then you may eat meat, [p]whatever you desire. 21 If the place where the Lord your God chooses to put His name is too far from you, then you may slaughter animals from your herd and flock which the Lord has given you, as I have commanded you; and you may eat within your gates [q]whatever you desire. 22 Just as a gazelle or a deer is eaten, so you may eat it; the unclean and the clean alike may eat it. 23 Only be sure (AB)not to eat the blood, for the blood is the [r]life, and you shall not eat the [s]life with the flesh. 24 You shall not eat it; you shall pour it out on the ground like water. 25 You shall not eat it, so that (AC)it may go well for you and your sons after you, since (AD)you will be doing what is right in the sight of the Lord. 26 (AE)Only your holy things which you may have and your vowed offerings, you shall take and go to the place which the Lord chooses. 27 And (AF)you shall offer your burnt offerings, the flesh and the blood, on the altar of the Lord your God; and the blood of your sacrifices shall be poured out on the altar of the Lord your God, and (AG)you shall eat the flesh.

28 “Be careful and listen to all these words which I am commanding you, so that (AH)it may go well for you and your sons after you forever, for you will be doing what is good and right in the sight of the Lord your God.

29 “When (AI)the Lord your God cuts off from you the nations which you are going in to dispossess, and you dispossess them and live in their land, 30 be careful that you are not ensnared [t]to follow them, after they are destroyed from your presence, and that you do not inquire about their gods, saying, ‘How do these nations serve their gods, that I also may do likewise?’ 31 (AJ)You shall not behave this way toward the Lord your God, because every abominable act which the Lord hates, they have done for their gods; for (AK)they even burn their sons and daughters in the fire for their gods.

32 [u](AL)Whatever I command you, you shall be careful to do; (AM)you shall not add to nor take anything away from it.

A Prescribed Place of Worship

12 “These (A)are the statutes and judgments which you shall be careful to observe in the land which the Lord God of your fathers is giving you to possess, (B)all[a] the days that you live on the earth. (C)You shall utterly destroy all the places where the nations which you shall dispossess served their gods, (D)on the high mountains and on the hills and under every green tree. And (E)you shall destroy their altars, break their sacred pillars, and burn their [b]wooden images with fire; you shall cut down the carved images of their gods and destroy their names from that place. You shall not (F)worship the Lord your God with such things.

“But you shall seek the (G)place where the Lord your God chooses, out of all your tribes, to put His name for His (H)dwelling[c] place; and there you shall go. (I)There you shall take your burnt offerings, your sacrifices, your tithes, the heave offerings of your hand, your vowed offerings, your freewill offerings, and the (J)firstborn of your herds and flocks. And (K)there you shall eat before the Lord your God, and (L)you shall rejoice in [d]all to which you have put your hand, you and your households, in which the Lord your God has blessed you.

“You shall not at all do as we are doing here today—(M)every man doing whatever is right in his own eyes— for as yet you have not come to the (N)rest[e] and the inheritance which the Lord your God is giving you. 10 But when you cross over the Jordan and dwell in the land which the Lord your God is giving you to inherit, and He gives you (O)rest from all your enemies round about, so that you dwell in safety, 11 then there will be the place where the Lord your God chooses to make His name abide. There you shall bring all that I command you: your burnt offerings, your sacrifices, your tithes, the heave offerings of your hand, and all your choice offerings which you vow to the Lord. 12 And (P)you shall rejoice before the Lord your God, you and your sons and your daughters, your male and female servants, and the (Q)Levite who is within your gates, since he has no portion nor inheritance with you. 13 Take heed to yourself that you do not offer your burnt offerings in every place that you see; 14 but in the place which the Lord chooses, in one of your tribes, there you shall offer your burnt offerings, and there you shall do all that I command you.

15 “However, (R)you may slaughter and eat meat within all your gates, whatever your heart desires, according to the blessing of the Lord your God which He has given you; (S)the unclean and the clean may eat of it, (T)of the gazelle and the deer alike. 16 (U)Only you shall not eat the blood; you shall pour it on the earth like water. 17 You may not eat within your gates the tithe of your grain or your new wine or your oil, of the firstborn of your herd or your flock, of any of your offerings which you vow, of your freewill offerings, or of the [f]heave offering of your hand. 18 But you must eat them before the Lord your God in the place which the Lord your God chooses, you and your son and your daughter, your male servant and your female servant, and the Levite who is within your gates; and you shall rejoice before the Lord your God in [g]all to which you put your hands. 19 [h]Take heed to yourself that you do not forsake the Levite as long as you live in your land.

20 “When the Lord your God (V)enlarges your border as He has promised you, and you say, ‘Let me eat meat,’ because you long to eat meat, you may eat as much meat as your heart desires. 21 If the place where the Lord your God chooses to put His name is too far from (W)you, then you may slaughter from your herd and from your flock which the Lord has given you, just as I have commanded you, and you may eat within your gates as much as your heart desires. 22 Just as the gazelle and the deer are eaten, so you may eat them; the unclean and the clean alike may eat them. 23 Only be sure that you do not eat the blood, (X)for the blood is the life; you may not eat the life with the meat. 24 You shall not eat it; you shall pour it on the earth like water. 25 You shall not eat it, (Y)that it may go well with you and your children after you, (Z)when you do what is right in the sight of the Lord. 26 Only the (AA)holy things which you have, and your vowed offerings, you shall take and go to the place which the Lord chooses. 27 And (AB)you shall offer your burnt offerings, the meat and the blood, on the altar of the Lord your God; and the blood of your sacrifices shall be poured out on the altar of the Lord your God, and you shall eat the meat. 28 Observe and obey all these words which I command you, (AC)that it may go well with you and your children after you forever, when you do what is good and right in the sight of the Lord your God.

Beware of False Gods

29 “When (AD)the Lord your God cuts off from before you the nations which you go to dispossess, and you displace them and dwell in their land, 30 take heed to yourself that you are not ensnared to follow them, after they are destroyed from before you, and that you do not inquire after their gods, saying, ‘How did these nations serve their gods? I also will do likewise.’ 31 (AE)You shall not worship the Lord your God in that way; for every [i]abomination to the Lord which He hates they have done to their gods; for (AF)they burn even their sons and daughters in the fire to their gods.

32 “Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; (AG)you shall not add to it nor take away from it.
