The First Disciples

(A)Now it happened that while the crowd was pressing around Him and listening to the word of God, He was standing by (B)the lake of Gennesaret; and He saw two boats lying at the edge of the lake; but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets. And (C)He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little distance from the land. And He sat down and continued teaching the crowds from the boat. Now when He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and (D)let down your nets for a catch.” Simon responded and said, “(E)Master, (F)we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but [a]I will do as You say and let down the nets.” And when they had done this, (G)they caught a great quantity of fish, and their nets began to tear; so they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, to the point that they were sinking. But when Simon Peter saw this, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!” For amazement had seized him and all his companions because of the catch of fish which they had taken; 10 and likewise also were [b]James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, (H)Do not fear; from now on you will be (I)catching people.” 11 When they had brought their boats to land, (J)they left everything and followed Him.

A Man with Leprosy Healed

12 (K)While He was in one of the cities, behold, there was a man [c]covered with leprosy; and when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” 13 And He reached out with His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” And immediately the leprosy left him. 14 And He ordered him to tell no one, saying, “But go and (L)show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, just as Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.” 15 But (M)the news about Him was spreading even farther, and large crowds were gathering to hear Him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16 But Jesus Himself would often slip away [d]to the [e]wilderness and (N)pray.

A Man Lowered Through a Roof

17 [f]One day He was teaching, and (O)there were some Pharisees and (P)teachers of the Law sitting there who had (Q)come from every village of Galilee and Judea, and from Jerusalem; and (R)the power of the Lord was present for Him to perform healing. 18 (S)And some men were carrying a man on a stretcher who was paralyzed; and they were trying to bring him in and to set him down in front of Him. 19 But when they did not find any way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on (T)the roof and let him down (U)through the tiles with his stretcher, into the middle of the crowd, in front of Jesus. 20 And seeing their faith, He said, [g]Friend, (V)your sins are forgiven you.” 21 The scribes and the Pharisees (W)began thinking of the implications, saying, “(X)Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? (Y)Who can forgive sins, except God alone?” 22 But Jesus, [h]aware of their thoughts, responded and said to them, “Why are you thinking this way in your hearts? 23 Which is easier, to say: ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 24 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,” He said to the (Z)man who was paralyzed, “I say to you, get up, and pick up your stretcher, and go home.” 25 And immediately he got up before them, and picked up what he had been lying on, and went home (AA)glorifying God. 26 And [i]they were all struck with astonishment and began (AB)glorifying God. They were also filled (AC)with fear, saying, “We have seen remarkable things today!”

Call of Levi (Matthew)

27 (AD)After that He went out and looked at a tax collector named [j](AE)Levi sitting in the tax office, and He said to him, “Follow Me.” 28 And he (AF)left everything behind, and got up and began following Him.

29 And (AG)Levi gave a big reception for Him in his house; and there was a large crowd of (AH)tax collectors and other people who were reclining at the table with them. 30 (AI)The Pharisees and their scribes began grumbling to His disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and [k]sinners?” 31 And Jesus answered and said to them, (AJ)It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous to repentance, but sinners.”

33 And they said to Him, “(AK)The disciples of John often fast and offer prayers, the disciples of the Pharisees also do [l]the same, but Yours eat and drink.” 34 And Jesus said to them, “You cannot make the [m]attendants of the groom fast while the groom is with them, can you? 35 (AL)But the days will come; and when the groom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.” 36 And He was also telling them a parable: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and puts it on an old garment; otherwise he will both tear the new, and the patch from the new garment will not match the old. 37 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled out, and the skins will be ruined. 38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. 39 And no one, after drinking old wine wants new; for he says, ‘The old is fine.’”

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath

(AM)Now it happened that [n]Jesus was passing through some grainfields on a Sabbath, and His disciples (AN)were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating them. But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what (AO)is not lawful on the Sabbath?” And Jesus, answering them, said, “Have you not even read (AP)what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him, how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the [o]consecrated bread, which (AQ)is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests alone, and gave it to his companions?” And He was saying to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

(AR)On another Sabbath He entered (AS)the synagogue and taught; and a man was there [p]whose right hand was withered. Now the scribes and the Pharisees (AT)were watching Him [q]closely to see if He healed on the Sabbath, so that they might find a reason to accuse Him. But He (AU)knew [r]what they were thinking, and He said to the man with the withered hand, “Get up and [s]come forward!” And he got up and [t]came forward. And Jesus said to them, “I ask you whether it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath or to do harm, to save a life or to destroy it?” 10 And after (AV)looking around at them all, He said to him, “Stretch out your hand!” And he did so; and his hand was restored. 11 But they themselves were filled with senseless rage, and began discussing together what they might do to Jesus.

Choosing the Twelve

12 Now it was [u]at this time that He went off to (AW)the mountain to (AX)pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer with God. 13 And when day came, (AY)He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also named as (AZ)apostles: 14 Simon, whom He also named Peter, and his brother Andrew; and [v]James and John; and Philip and Bartholomew; 15 and (BA)Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot; 16 Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

17 And then Jesus (BB)came down with them and stood on a level place; and there was (BC)a large crowd of His disciples, and a great multitude of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and the coastal region of (BD)Tyre and Sidon, 18 who had come to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled by unclean spirits were being cured. 19 And all the [w]people were trying to (BE)touch Him, because (BF)power was coming from Him and healing them all.

The Beatitudes

20 And He raised His eyes toward His disciples and began saying, (BG)Blessed are [x]you who are poor, for (BH)yours is the kingdom of God. 21 Blessed are [y]you who are hungry now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are [z]you who weep now, for you will laugh. 22 (BI)Blessed are you when the people hate you, and when they [aa](BJ)exclude you, and insult you, and scorn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man. 23 Rejoice on that day and (BK)jump for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven. For their fathers used to [ab]treat the prophets (BL)the same way. 24 But woe to (BM)you who are rich, for (BN)you are receiving your comfort in full. 25 Woe to you who [ac]are well-fed now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep. 26 Woe to you when all the people speak well of you; for their fathers used to [ad]treat the (BO)false prophets the same way.

27 “But I say to you who hear, (BP)love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, (BQ)pray for those who are abusive to you. 29 (BR)Whoever hits you on the cheek, offer him the other also; and whoever takes away your [ae]cloak, do not withhold your [af]tunic from him either. 30 Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back. 31 [ag](BS)Treat people the same way you want them to [ah]treat you. 32 (BT)If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 (BU)And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners in order to receive back the same amount. 35 But (BV)love your enemies and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be (BW)sons of (BX)the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil people. 36 [ai]Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

37 (BY)Do not [aj]judge, and you will not be judged; and do not [ak]condemn, and you will not be condemned; [al](BZ)pardon, and you will be pardoned. 38 Give, and it will be given to you. They will [am]pour (CA)into your lap a (CB)good measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.”

39 Now He also spoke a parable to them: (CC)A person who is blind cannot guide another who is blind, can he? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 (CD)A [an]student is not above the teacher; but everyone, when he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher. 41 Why do you look at the [ao]speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the [ap]speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the [aq]speck that is in your brother’s eye. 43 (CE)For there is no good tree that bears bad fruit, nor, [ar]on the other hand, a bad tree that bears good fruit. 44 (CF)For each tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a briar bush. 45 (CG)The good person out of the good [as]treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil person out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; (CH)for his mouth speaks from [at]that which fills his heart.

The Parable of the Builders

46 “Now (CI)why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 (CJ)Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and [au]acts on them, I will show you whom he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who [av]dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when there was a flood, the river burst against that house and yet it could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who has heard and has not acted accordingly is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation; and the river burst against it and it immediately collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.”

Four Fishermen Called as Disciples(A)

So (B)it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to (C)hear the word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, and saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets. Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And He (D)sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.

When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, (E)“Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”

But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught (F)nothing; nevertheless (G)at Your word I will let down the net.” And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, (H)“Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!”

For he and all who were with him were (I)astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken; 10 and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid. (J)From now on you will catch men.” 11 So when they had brought their boats to land, (K)they [a]forsook all and followed Him.

Jesus Cleanses a Leper(L)

12 (M)And it happened when He was in a certain city, that behold, a man who was full of (N)leprosy saw Jesus; and he fell on his face and [b]implored Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”

13 Then He put out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” (O)Immediately the leprosy left him. 14 (P)And He charged him to tell no one, “But go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, as a testimony to them, (Q)just as Moses commanded.”

15 However, (R)the report went around concerning Him all the more; and (S)great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by Him of their infirmities. 16 (T)So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and (U)prayed.

Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralytic(V)

17 Now it happened on a certain day, as He was teaching, that there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come out of every town of Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present [c]to heal them. 18 (W)Then behold, men brought on a bed a man who was paralyzed, whom they sought to bring in and lay before Him. 19 And when they could not find how they might bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the housetop and let him down with his bed through the tiling into the midst (X)before Jesus.

20 When He saw their faith, He said to him, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.”

21 (Y)And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? (Z)Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

22 But when Jesus (AA)perceived their thoughts, He answered and said to them, “Why are you reasoning in your hearts? 23 Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise up and walk’? 24 But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the man who was paralyzed, (AB)“I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.”

25 Immediately he rose up before them, took up what he had been lying on, and departed to his own house, (AC)glorifying God. 26 And they were all amazed, and they (AD)glorified God and were filled with fear, saying, “We have seen strange things today!”

Matthew the Tax Collector(AE)

27 (AF)After these things He went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, (AG)“Follow Me.” 28 So he left all, rose up, and (AH)followed Him.

29 (AI)Then Levi gave Him a great feast in his own house. And (AJ)there were a great number of tax collectors and others who sat down with them. 30 [d]And their scribes and the Pharisees [e]complained against His disciples, saying, (AK)“Why do You eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

31 Jesus answered and said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32 (AL)I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”

Jesus Is Questioned About Fasting(AM)

33 Then they said to Him, (AN)“Why[f] do the disciples of John fast often and make prayers, and likewise those of the Pharisees, but Yours eat and drink?”

34 And He said to them, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while the (AO)bridegroom is with them? 35 But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them; then they will fast in those days.”

36 (AP)Then He spoke a parable to them: “No one [g]puts a piece from a new garment on an old one; otherwise the new makes a tear, and also the piece that was taken out of the new does not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 But new wine must be put into new wineskins, [h]and both are preserved. 39 And no one, having drunk old wine, [i]immediately desires new; for he says, ‘The old is [j]better.’ ”

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(AQ)

Now (AR)it happened [k]on the second Sabbath after the first that He went through the grainfields. And His disciples plucked the heads of grain and ate them, rubbing them in their hands. And some of the Pharisees said to them, “Why are you doing (AS)what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?”

But Jesus answering them said, “Have you not even read this, (AT)what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he went into the house of God, took and ate the showbread, and also gave some to those with him, (AU)which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat?” And He said to them, “The Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”

Healing on the Sabbath(AV)

(AW)Now it happened on another Sabbath, also, that He entered the synagogue and taught. And a man was there whose right hand was withered. So the scribes and Pharisees watched Him closely, whether He would (AX)heal on the Sabbath, that they might find an (AY)accusation against Him. But He (AZ)knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, “Arise and stand here.” And he arose and stood. Then Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one thing: (BA)Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or [l]to destroy?” 10 And when He had looked around at them all, He said to [m]the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored [n]as whole as the other. 11 But they were filled with rage, and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.

The Twelve Apostles(BB)

12 Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in (BC)prayer to God. 13 And when it was day, He called His disciples to Himself; (BD)and from them He chose (BE)twelve whom He also named apostles: 14 Simon, (BF)whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew; 15 Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called the Zealot; 16 Judas (BG)the son of James, and (BH)Judas Iscariot who also became a traitor.

Jesus Heals a Great Multitude(BI)

17 And He came down with them and stood on a level place with a crowd of His disciples (BJ)and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear Him and be healed of their diseases, 18 as well as those who were tormented with unclean spirits. And they were healed. 19 And the whole multitude (BK)sought to (BL)touch Him, for (BM)power went out from Him and healed them all.

The Beatitudes(BN)

20 Then He lifted up His eyes toward His disciples, and said:

(BO)“Blessed are you poor,
For yours is the kingdom of God.
21 (BP)Blessed are you who hunger now,
For you shall be (BQ)filled.[o]
(BR)Blessed are you who weep now,
For you shall (BS)laugh.
22 (BT)Blessed are you when men hate you,
And when they (BU)exclude you,
And revile you, and cast out your name as evil,
For the Son of Man’s sake.
23 (BV)Rejoice in that day and leap for joy!
For indeed your reward is great in heaven,
For (BW)in like manner their fathers did to the prophets.

Jesus Pronounces Woes

24 “But(BX) woe to you (BY)who are rich,
For (BZ)you have received your consolation.
25 (CA)Woe to you who are full,
For you shall hunger.
(CB)Woe to you who laugh now,
For you shall mourn and (CC)weep.
26 (CD)Woe [p]to you when [q]all men speak well of you,
For so did their fathers to the false prophets.

Love Your Enemies(CE)

27 (CF)“But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 (CG)bless those who curse you, and (CH)pray for those who spitefully use you. 29 (CI)To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. (CJ)And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either. 30 (CK)Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back. 31 (CL)And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.

32 (CM)“But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 (CN)And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back. 35 But (CO)love your enemies, (CP)do good, and (CQ)lend, [r]hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and (CR)you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. 36 (CS)Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.

Do Not Judge(CT)

37 (CU)“Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. (CV)Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 (CW)Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your (CX)bosom. For (CY)with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”

39 And He spoke a parable to them: (CZ)“Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into the ditch? 40 (DA)A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher. 41 (DB)And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the plank in your own eye? 42 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the plank that is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck that is in your brother’s eye.

A Tree Is Known by Its Fruit(DC)

43 (DD)“For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 For (DE)every tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. 45 (DF)A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil [s]treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out (DG)of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

Build on the Rock(DH)

46 (DI)“But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say? 47 (DJ)Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: 48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was [t]founded on the rock. 49 But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it [u]fell. And the ruin of that house was great.”
