The First Disciples
5 (A)Now it happened that while the crowd was pressing around Him and listening to the word of God, He was standing by (B)the lake of Gennesaret; 2 and He saw two boats lying at the edge of the lake; but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets. 3 And (C)He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little distance from the land. And He sat down and continued teaching the crowds from the boat. 4 Now when He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and (D)let down your nets for a catch.” 5 Simon responded and said, “(E)Master, (F)we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but [a]I will do as You say and let down the nets.” 6 And when they had done this, (G)they caught a great quantity of fish, and their nets began to tear; 7 so they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, to the point that they were sinking. 8 But when Simon Peter saw this, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!” 9 For amazement had seized him and all his companions because of the catch of fish which they had taken; 10 and likewise also were [b]James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “(H)Do not fear; from now on you will be (I)catching people.” 11 When they had brought their boats to land, (J)they left everything and followed Him.
A Man with Leprosy Healed
12 (K)While He was in one of the cities, behold, there was a man [c]covered with leprosy; and when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” 13 And He reached out with His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” And immediately the leprosy left him. 14 And He ordered him to tell no one, saying, “But go and (L)show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, just as Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.” 15 But (M)the news about Him was spreading even farther, and large crowds were gathering to hear Him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16 But Jesus Himself would often slip away [d]to the [e]wilderness and (N)pray.
A Man Lowered Through a Roof
17 [f]One day He was teaching, and (O)there were some Pharisees and (P)teachers of the Law sitting there who had (Q)come from every village of Galilee and Judea, and from Jerusalem; and (R)the power of the Lord was present for Him to perform healing. 18 (S)And some men were carrying a man on a stretcher who was paralyzed; and they were trying to bring him in and to set him down in front of Him. 19 But when they did not find any way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on (T)the roof and let him down (U)through the tiles with his stretcher, into the middle of the crowd, in front of Jesus. 20 And seeing their faith, He said, “[g]Friend, (V)your sins are forgiven you.” 21 The scribes and the Pharisees (W)began thinking of the implications, saying, “(X)Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? (Y)Who can forgive sins, except God alone?” 22 But Jesus, [h]aware of their thoughts, responded and said to them, “Why are you thinking this way in your hearts? 23 Which is easier, to say: ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 24 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,” He said to the (Z)man who was paralyzed, “I say to you, get up, and pick up your stretcher, and go home.” 25 And immediately he got up before them, and picked up what he had been lying on, and went home (AA)glorifying God. 26 And [i]they were all struck with astonishment and began (AB)glorifying God. They were also filled (AC)with fear, saying, “We have seen remarkable things today!”
Call of Levi (Matthew)
27 (AD)After that He went out and looked at a tax collector named [j](AE)Levi sitting in the tax office, and He said to him, “Follow Me.” 28 And he (AF)left everything behind, and got up and began following Him.
29 And (AG)Levi gave a big reception for Him in his house; and there was a large crowd of (AH)tax collectors and other people who were reclining at the table with them. 30 (AI)The Pharisees and their scribes began grumbling to His disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and [k]sinners?” 31 And Jesus answered and said to them, “(AJ)It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous to repentance, but sinners.”
33 And they said to Him, “(AK)The disciples of John often fast and offer prayers, the disciples of the Pharisees also do [l]the same, but Yours eat and drink.” 34 And Jesus said to them, “You cannot make the [m]attendants of the groom fast while the groom is with them, can you? 35 (AL)But the days will come; and when the groom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.” 36 And He was also telling them a parable: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and puts it on an old garment; otherwise he will both tear the new, and the patch from the new garment will not match the old. 37 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled out, and the skins will be ruined. 38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. 39 And no one, after drinking old wine wants new; for he says, ‘The old is fine.’”
Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath
6 (AM)Now it happened that [n]Jesus was passing through some grainfields on a Sabbath, and His disciples (AN)were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating them. 2 But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what (AO)is not lawful on the Sabbath?” 3 And Jesus, answering them, said, “Have you not even read (AP)what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him, 4 how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the [o]consecrated bread, which (AQ)is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests alone, and gave it to his companions?” 5 And He was saying to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
6 (AR)On another Sabbath He entered (AS)the synagogue and taught; and a man was there [p]whose right hand was withered. 7 Now the scribes and the Pharisees (AT)were watching Him [q]closely to see if He healed on the Sabbath, so that they might find a reason to accuse Him. 8 But He (AU)knew [r]what they were thinking, and He said to the man with the withered hand, “Get up and [s]come forward!” And he got up and [t]came forward. 9 And Jesus said to them, “I ask you whether it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath or to do harm, to save a life or to destroy it?” 10 And after (AV)looking around at them all, He said to him, “Stretch out your hand!” And he did so; and his hand was restored. 11 But they themselves were filled with senseless rage, and began discussing together what they might do to Jesus.
Choosing the Twelve
12 Now it was [u]at this time that He went off to (AW)the mountain to (AX)pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer with God. 13 And when day came, (AY)He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also named as (AZ)apostles: 14 Simon, whom He also named Peter, and his brother Andrew; and [v]James and John; and Philip and Bartholomew; 15 and (BA)Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot; 16 Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
17 And then Jesus (BB)came down with them and stood on a level place; and there was (BC)a large crowd of His disciples, and a great multitude of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and the coastal region of (BD)Tyre and Sidon, 18 who had come to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled by unclean spirits were being cured. 19 And all the [w]people were trying to (BE)touch Him, because (BF)power was coming from Him and healing them all.
The Beatitudes
20 And He raised His eyes toward His disciples and began saying, “(BG)Blessed are [x]you who are poor, for (BH)yours is the kingdom of God. 21 Blessed are [y]you who are hungry now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are [z]you who weep now, for you will laugh. 22 (BI)Blessed are you when the people hate you, and when they [aa](BJ)exclude you, and insult you, and scorn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man. 23 Rejoice on that day and (BK)jump for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven. For their fathers used to [ab]treat the prophets (BL)the same way. 24 But woe to (BM)you who are rich, for (BN)you are receiving your comfort in full. 25 Woe to you who [ac]are well-fed now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep. 26 Woe to you when all the people speak well of you; for their fathers used to [ad]treat the (BO)false prophets the same way.
27 “But I say to you who hear, (BP)love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, (BQ)pray for those who are abusive to you. 29 (BR)Whoever hits you on the cheek, offer him the other also; and whoever takes away your [ae]cloak, do not withhold your [af]tunic from him either. 30 Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back. 31 [ag](BS)Treat people the same way you want them to [ah]treat you. 32 (BT)If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 (BU)And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners in order to receive back the same amount. 35 But (BV)love your enemies and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be (BW)sons of (BX)the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil people. 36 [ai]Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
37 “(BY)Do not [aj]judge, and you will not be judged; and do not [ak]condemn, and you will not be condemned; [al](BZ)pardon, and you will be pardoned. 38 Give, and it will be given to you. They will [am]pour (CA)into your lap a (CB)good measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.”
39 Now He also spoke a parable to them: “(CC)A person who is blind cannot guide another who is blind, can he? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 (CD)A [an]student is not above the teacher; but everyone, when he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher. 41 Why do you look at the [ao]speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the [ap]speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the [aq]speck that is in your brother’s eye. 43 (CE)For there is no good tree that bears bad fruit, nor, [ar]on the other hand, a bad tree that bears good fruit. 44 (CF)For each tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a briar bush. 45 (CG)The good person out of the good [as]treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil person out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; (CH)for his mouth speaks from [at]that which fills his heart.
The Parable of the Builders
46 “Now (CI)why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 (CJ)Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and [au]acts on them, I will show you whom he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who [av]dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when there was a flood, the river burst against that house and yet it could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who has heard and has not acted accordingly is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation; and the river burst against it and it immediately collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.”

Jesus Calls His First Disciples(A)
5 One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,[a] the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.(B) 2 He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.(C)
4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”(D)
5 Simon answered, “Master,(E) we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything.(F) But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.(G) 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.
8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”(H) 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.
Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid;(I) from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.(J)
Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy(K)
12 While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy.[b](L) When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
13 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him.
14 Then Jesus ordered him, “Don’t tell anyone,(M) but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded(N) for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
15 Yet the news about him spread all the more,(O) so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16 But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.(P)
Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man(Q)
17 One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law(R) were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick.(S) 18 Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus. 19 When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.
20 When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”(T)
21 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”(U)
22 Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? 23 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 24 But I want you to know that the Son of Man(V) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 25 Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God. 26 Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God.(W) They were filled with awe and said, “We have seen remarkable things today.”
Jesus Calls Levi and Eats With Sinners(X)
27 After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,”(Y) Jesus said to him, 28 and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.(Z)
29 Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors(AA) and others were eating with them. 30 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect(AB) complained to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”(AC)
31 Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”(AD)
Jesus Questioned About Fasting(AE)
33 They said to him, “John’s disciples(AF) often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking.”
34 Jesus answered, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom(AG) fast while he is with them? 35 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them;(AH) in those days they will fast.”
36 He told them this parable: “No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, ‘The old is better.’”
Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(AI)
6 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels.(AJ) 2 Some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”(AK)
3 Jesus answered them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?(AL) 4 He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat.(AM) And he also gave some to his companions.” 5 Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man(AN) is Lord of the Sabbath.”
6 On another Sabbath(AO) he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. 7 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely(AP) to see if he would heal on the Sabbath.(AQ) 8 But Jesus knew what they were thinking(AR) and said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Get up and stand in front of everyone.” So he got up and stood there.
9 Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”
10 He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and his hand was completely restored. 11 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were furious(AS) and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.
The Twelve Apostles(AT)
12 One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.(AU) 13 When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles:(AV) 14 Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, 15 Matthew,(AW) Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, 16 Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
Blessings and Woes(AX)
17 He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon,(AY) 18 who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured, 19 and the people all tried to touch him,(AZ) because power was coming from him and healing them all.(BA)
20 Looking at his disciples, he said:
“Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.(BB)
21 Blessed are you who hunger now,
for you will be satisfied.(BC)
Blessed are you who weep now,
for you will laugh.(BD)
22 Blessed are you when people hate you,
when they exclude you(BE) and insult you(BF)
and reject your name as evil,
because of the Son of Man.(BG)
23 “Rejoice in that day and leap for joy,(BH) because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.(BI)
24 “But woe to you who are rich,(BJ)
for you have already received your comfort.(BK)
25 Woe to you who are well fed now,
for you will go hungry.(BL)
Woe to you who laugh now,
for you will mourn and weep.(BM)
26 Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you,
for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.(BN)
Love for Enemies(BO)
27 “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,(BP) 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.(BQ) 29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.(BR) 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.(BS)
32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?(BT) Even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you?(BU) Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. 35 But love your enemies, do good to them,(BV) and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children(BW) of the Most High,(BX) because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36 Be merciful,(BY) just as your Father(BZ) is merciful.
Judging Others(CA)
37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged.(CB) Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.(CC) 38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.(CD) For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”(CE)
39 He also told them this parable: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit?(CF) 40 The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.(CG)
41 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
A Tree and Its Fruit(CH)
43 “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 Each tree is recognized by its own fruit.(CI) People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. 45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.(CJ)
The Wise and Foolish Builders(CK)
46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’(CL) and do not do what I say?(CM) 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice,(CN) I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”
