John the Baptist Prepares the Way(A)

3 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, (B)Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, 2 [a]while (C)Annas and Caiaphas were high priests, the word of God came to (D)John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. 3 (E)And he went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance (F)for the remission of sins, 4 as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying:

(G)“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord;
Make His paths straight.
5 Every valley shall be filled
And every mountain and hill brought low;
The crooked places shall be made straight
And the rough ways smooth;
6 And (H)all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’ ”

John Preaches to the People(I)

7 Then he said to the multitudes that came out to be baptized by him, (J)“Brood[b] of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Therefore bear fruits (K)worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. 9 And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore (L)every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

10 So the people asked him, saying, (M)“What shall we do then?”

11 He answered and said to them, (N)“He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, (O)let him do likewise.”

12 Then (P)tax collectors also came to be baptized, and said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?”

13 And he said to them, (Q)“Collect no more than what is appointed for you.”

14 Likewise the soldiers asked him, saying, “And what shall we do?”

So he said to them, “Do not [c]intimidate anyone (R)or accuse falsely, and be content with your wages.”

15 Now as the people were in expectation, and all reasoned in their hearts about John, whether he was the Christ or not, 16 John answered, saying to all, (S)“I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will (T)baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and (U)gather the wheat into His barn; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire.”

18 And with many other exhortations he preached to the people. 19 (V)But Herod the tetrarch, being rebuked by him concerning Herodias, his [d]brother Philip’s wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, 20 also added this, above all, that he shut John up in prison.

John Baptizes Jesus(W)

21 When all the people were baptized, (X)it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. 22 And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am (Y)well pleased.”

The Genealogy of Jesus Christ(Z)

Satan Tempts Jesus(AL)

4 Then (AM)Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and (AN)was led by the Spirit [e]into the wilderness, 2 being [f]tempted for forty days by the devil. And (AO)in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.

3 And the devil said to Him, “If You are (AP)the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”

4 But Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, (AQ)‘Man shall not live by bread alone, [g]but by every word of God.’ ”

5 [h]Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for (AR)this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. 7 Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours.”

8 And Jesus answered and said to him, [i]“Get behind Me, Satan! [j]For it is written, (AS)‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”

9 (AT)Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:

(AU)‘He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you,’

11 and,

(AV)‘In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”

12 And Jesus answered and said to him, “It has been said, (AW)‘You shall not [k]tempt the Lord your God.’ ”

13 Now when the devil had ended every [l]temptation, he departed from Him (AX)until an opportune time.

Jesus Begins His Galilean Ministry(AY)

14 (AZ)Then Jesus returned (BA)in the power of the Spirit to (BB)Galilee, and (BC)news of Him went out through all the surrounding region. 15 And He (BD)taught in their synagogues, (BE)being glorified by all.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth(BF)

16 So He came to (BG)Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, (BH)He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17 And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:

18 “The(BI) Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me [m]to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To (BJ)set at liberty those who are [n]oppressed;
19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is (BK)fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 So all bore witness to Him, and (BL)marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, (BM)“Is this not Joseph’s son?”

23 He said to them, “You will surely say this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done in (BN)Capernaum,[o] do also here in (BO)Your country.’ ” 24 Then He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, no (BP)prophet is accepted in his own country. 25 But I tell you truly, (BQ)many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a great famine throughout all the land; 26 but to none of them was Elijah sent except to [p]Zarephath, in the region of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 (BR)And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.”

28 So all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were (BS)filled with [q]wrath, 29 (BT)and rose up and thrust Him out of the city; and they led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw Him down over the cliff. 30 Then (BU)passing through the midst of them, He went His way.

Jesus Casts Out an Unclean Spirit(BV)

31 Then (BW)He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths. 32 And they were (BX)astonished at His teaching, (BY)for His word was with authority. 33 (BZ)Now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out with a loud voice, 34 saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? (CA)I know who You are—(CB)the Holy One of God!”

35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, [r]“Be quiet, and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him in their midst, it came out of him and did not hurt him. 36 Then they were all amazed and spoke among themselves, saying, “What a word this is! For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.” 37 And the report about Him went out into every place in the surrounding region.

Peter’s Mother-in-Law Healed(CC)

38 (CD)Now He arose from the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. But Simon’s wife’s mother was [s]sick with a high fever, and they (CE)made request of Him concerning her. 39 So He stood over her and (CF)rebuked the fever, and it left her. And immediately she arose and served them.

Many Healed After Sabbath Sunset(CG)

40 (CH)When the sun was setting, all those who had any that were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and He laid His hands on every one of them and healed them. 41 (CI)And demons also came out of many, crying out and saying, (CJ)“You are [t]the Christ, the Son of God!”

And He, (CK)rebuking them, did not allow them to [u]speak, for they knew that He was the Christ.

Jesus Preaches in Galilee(CL)

42 (CM)Now when it was day, He departed and went into a deserted place. And the crowd sought Him and came to Him, and tried to keep Him from leaving them; 43 but He said to them, “I must (CN)preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent.” 44 (CO)And He was preaching in the synagogues of [v]Galilee.

3 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate(C) was governor of Judea, Herod(D) tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— 2 during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas,(E) the word of God came to John(F) son of Zechariah(G) in the wilderness. 3 He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.(H) 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:

“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
    make straight paths for him.
5 Every valley shall be filled in,
    every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,
    the rough ways smooth.
6 And all people will see God’s salvation.’”[a](I)

7 John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers!(J) Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?(K) 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’(L) For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 9 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”(M)

10 “What should we do then?”(N) the crowd asked.

11 John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”(O)

12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized.(P) “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”

13 “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,”(Q) he told them.

14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”

He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely(R)—be content with your pay.”

15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John(S) might possibly be the Messiah.(T) 16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with[b] water.(U) But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with[c] the Holy Spirit and fire.(V) 17 His winnowing fork(W) is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”(X) 18 And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them.

19 But when John rebuked Herod(Y) the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done, 20 Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.(Z)

21 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying,(AC) heaven was opened 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him(AD) in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son,(AE) whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”(AF)

Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness(AQ)

4 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit,(AR) left the Jordan(AS) and was led by the Spirit(AT) into the wilderness, 2 where for forty days(AU) he was tempted[f] by the devil.(AV) He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.

3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God,(AW) tell this stone to become bread.”

4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’[g]”(AX)

5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.(AY) 6 And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me,(AZ) and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.”

8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’[h]”(BA)

9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:

“‘He will command his angels concerning you
    to guard you carefully;
11 they will lift you up in their hands,
    so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[i]”(BB)

12 Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[j]”(BC)

13 When the devil had finished all this tempting,(BD) he left him(BE) until an opportune time.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

14 Jesus returned to Galilee(BF) in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.(BG) 15 He was teaching in their synagogues,(BH) and everyone praised him.

16 He went to Nazareth,(BI) where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue,(BJ) as was his custom. He stood up to read,(BK) 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,(BL)
    because he has anointed me
    to proclaim good news(BM) to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
    and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19     to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”[k](BN)

20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down.(BO) The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled(BP) in your hearing.”

22 All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.(BQ)

23 Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ And you will tell me, ‘Do here in your hometown(BR) what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.’”(BS)

24 “Truly I tell you,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown.(BT) 25 I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land.(BU) 26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.(BV) 27 And there were many in Israel with leprosy[l] in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.”(BW)

28 All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. 29 They got up, drove him out of the town,(BX) and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. 30 But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.(BY)

Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit(BZ)

31 Then he went down to Capernaum,(CA) a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. 32 They were amazed at his teaching,(CB) because his words had authority.(CC)

33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34 “Go away! What do you want with us,(CD) Jesus of Nazareth?(CE) Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are(CF)—the Holy One of God!”(CG)

35 “Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly.(CH) “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.

36 All the people were amazed(CI) and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority(CJ) and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!” 37 And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.(CK)

Jesus Heals Many(CL)(CM)

38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. 39 So he bent over her and rebuked(CN) the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.

40 At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one,(CO) he healed them.(CP) 41 Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!”(CQ) But he rebuked(CR) them and would not allow them to speak,(CS) because they knew he was the Messiah.

42 At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43 But he said, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God(CT) to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.” 44 And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.(CU)
