The Death of Jesus

44 (A)It was now about the sixth hour,[a] and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour,[b] 45 while the sun's light failed. And (B)the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46 Then Jesus, (C)calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, (D)into your hands I (E)commit my spirit!” And having said this (F)he breathed his last. 47 Now (G)when the centurion saw what had taken place, (H)he praised God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent!” 48 And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home (I)beating their breasts. 49 And all (J)his acquaintances and (K)the women who had followed him from Galilee (L)stood at a distance watching these things.

Jesus Is Buried

50 (M)Now there was a man named Joseph, from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man, 51 who had not consented to their decision and action; and he (N)was looking for the kingdom of God. 52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53 Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud and (O)laid him in a tomb cut in stone, (P)where no one had ever yet been laid. 54 It was the day of (Q)Preparation, and the Sabbath was beginning.[c] 55 (R)The women (S)who had come with him from Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how his body was laid. 56 Then they returned and (T)prepared spices and ointments.

On the Sabbath they rested (U)according to the commandment.

The Resurrection

24 (V)But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, (W)taking the spices they had prepared. And they found (X)the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, (Y)two (Z)men stood by them in dazzling apparel. And as they were (AA)frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, (AB)while he was still in Galilee, (AC)that the Son of Man (AD)must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and (AE)be crucified and on (AF)the third day rise.” And (AG)they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb they (AH)told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10 Now it was (AI)Mary Magdalene and (AJ)Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles, 11 but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and (AK)they did not believe them. 12 But (AL)Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw (AM)the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened.

On the Road to Emmaus

13 That very day (AN)two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles[d] from Jerusalem, 14 and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. 16 (AO)But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17 And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad. 18 Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” 19 And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was (AP)a prophet (AQ)mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and (AR)how our chief priests and (AS)rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. 21 But we had hoped that he was (AT)the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now (AU)the third day since these things happened. 22 Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. (AV)They were at the tomb early in the morning, 23 and (AW)when they did not find his body, they came back saying that (AX)they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. 24 (AY)Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.” 25 And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 (AZ)Was it not necessary that (BA)the Christ should suffer these things and enter into (BB)his glory?” 27 And (BC)beginning with (BD)Moses and (BE)all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

28 So they drew near to the village to which they were going. (BF)He acted as if he were going farther, 29 but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and (BG)the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at table with them, he took the bread and (BH)blessed and broke it and gave it to them. 31 (BI)And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And (BJ)he vanished from their sight. 32 They said to each other, (BK)“Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he (BL)opened to us the Scriptures?” 33 And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they (BM)found the eleven and (BN)those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and (BO)has appeared to Simon!” 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and (BP)how he was known to them in (BQ)the breaking of the bread.

The Death of Jesus(A)

44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,(B) 45 for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple(C) was torn in two.(D) 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice,(E) “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”[a](F) When he had said this, he breathed his last.(G)

47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God(H) and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” 48 When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts(I) and went away. 49 But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee,(J) stood at a distance,(K) watching these things.

The Burial of Jesus(L)

50 Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, 51 who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God.(M) 52 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body. 53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. 54 It was Preparation Day,(N) and the Sabbath was about to begin.

55 The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee(O) followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. 56 Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes.(P) But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.(Q)

Jesus Has Risen(R)

24 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared(S) and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.(T) While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning(U) stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee:(V) ‘The Son of Man(W) must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’(X) Then they remembered his words.(Y)

When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them(Z) who told this to the apostles.(AA) 11 But they did not believe(AB) the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. 12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves,(AC) and he went away,(AD) wondering to himself what had happened.

On the Road to Emmaus

13 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles[b] from Jerusalem.(AE) 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them;(AF) 16 but they were kept from recognizing him.(AG)

17 He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”

They stood still, their faces downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas,(AH) asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”

19 “What things?” he asked.

“About Jesus of Nazareth,”(AI) they replied. “He was a prophet,(AJ) powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. 20 The chief priests and our rulers(AK) handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel.(AL) And what is more, it is the third day(AM) since all this took place. 22 In addition, some of our women amazed us.(AN) They went to the tomb early this morning 23 but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”(AO)

25 He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?”(AP) 27 And beginning with Moses(AQ) and all the Prophets,(AR) he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.(AS)

28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. 29 But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.

30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it(AT) and began to give it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him,(AU) and he disappeared from their sight. 32 They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us(AV) while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures(AW) to us?”

33 They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together 34 and saying, “It is true! The Lord(AX) has risen and has appeared to Simon.”(AY) 35 Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.(AZ)
