Jesus Mocked and Beaten(A)

63 (B)Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him and (C)beat Him. 64 [a]And having blindfolded Him, they (D)struck Him on the face and asked Him, saying, “Prophesy! Who is the one who struck You?” 65 And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him.

Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin(E)

66 (F)As soon as it was day, (G)the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him into their council, saying, 67 (H)“If You are the Christ, tell us.”

But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will (I)by no means believe. 68 And if I [b]also ask you, you will by no means answer [c]Me or let Me go. 69 (J)Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God.”

70 Then they all said, “Are You then the Son of God?”

So He said to them, (K)“You rightly say that I am.”

71 (L)And they said, “What further testimony do we need? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.”

Jesus Handed Over to Pontius Pilate(M)

23 Then (N)the whole multitude of them arose and led Him to (O)Pilate. And they began to (P)accuse Him, saying, “We found this fellow (Q)perverting [d]the nation, and (R)forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, saying (S)that He Himself is Christ, a King.”

(T)Then Pilate asked Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?”

He answered him and said, It is as you say.”

So Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd, (U)“I find no fault in this Man.”

But they were the more fierce, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from (V)Galilee to this place.”

Jesus Faces Herod

When Pilate heard [e]of Galilee, he asked if the Man were a Galilean. And as soon as he knew that He belonged to (W)Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time. Now when Herod saw Jesus, (X)he was exceedingly glad; for he had desired for a long time to see Him, because (Y)he had heard many things about Him, and he hoped to see some miracle done by Him. Then he questioned Him with many words, but He answered him (Z)nothing. 10 And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused Him. 11 (AA)Then Herod, with his [f]men of war, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, arrayed Him in a gorgeous robe, and sent Him back to Pilate. 12 That very day (AB)Pilate and Herod became friends with each other, for previously they had been at enmity with each other.

63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, “Prophesy! Who hit you?” 65 And they said many other insulting things to him.(B)

Jesus Before Pilate and Herod(C)(D)(E)

66 At daybreak the council(F) of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together,(G) and Jesus was led before them. 67 “If you are the Messiah,” they said, “tell us.”

Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me, 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer.(H) 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”(I)

70 They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?”(J)

He replied, “You say that I am.”(K)

71 Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.”

23 Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate.(L) And they began to accuse him, saying, “We have found this man subverting our nation.(M) He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar(N) and claims to be Messiah, a king.”(O)

So Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”

“You have said so,” Jesus replied.

Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.”(P)

But they insisted, “He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. He started in Galilee(Q) and has come all the way here.”

On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean.(R) When he learned that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod,(S) who was also in Jerusalem at that time.

When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him.(T) From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform a sign of some sort. He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer.(U) 10 The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing him. 11 Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe,(V) they sent him back to Pilate. 12 That day Herod and Pilate became friends(W)—before this they had been enemies.
