Luke 21-24

The Widow’s Gift

21 (A)Now He looked up and saw the wealthy putting their gifts into the temple treasury. 2 And He saw a poor widow putting [a]in (B)two [b]lepta coins. 3 And He said, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all of them; 4 for they all [c]contributed to the [d]offering from their [e]surplus; but she, from her poverty, put in all [f]that she had (C)to live on.”

5 (D)And while some were talking about the temple, that it was decorated with beautiful stones and [g]vowed gifts, He said, 6 “As for these things which you are observing, the days will come when (E)there will not be left one stone upon [h]another, which will not be torn down.”

7 They asked Him questions, saying, “Teacher, when therefore will these things happen? And what will be the [i]sign when these things are about to take place?” 8 And He said, “See to it that you are not misled; for many will come in My name, saying, ‘(F)I am He,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ (G)Do not go after them. 9 And when you hear of wars and revolts, do not be alarmed; for these things must take place first, but the end will not follow immediately.”

Things to Come

10 Then He continued by saying to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, 11 and there will be [j]massive earthquakes, and in various places plagues and famines; and there will be terrible sights and great [k]signs from heaven.

12 “But before all these things, (H)they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, turning you over to the synagogues and prisons, [l]bringing you before kings and governors on account of My name. 13 (I)It will lead to [m]an opportunity for your testimony. 14 (J)So [n]make up your minds not to prepare beforehand to defend yourselves; 15 for (K)I will provide you [o]eloquence and wisdom which none of your adversaries will be able to oppose or refute. 16 But you will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, other relatives, and friends, and they will put some of you to death, 17 and you will be hated by all people because of My name. 18 And yet (L)not a hair of your head will perish. 19 (M)By your endurance you will gain your [p]lives.

20 “But when you see Jerusalem (N)surrounded by armies, then [q]recognize that her desolation is near. 21 Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains, and those who are inside [r]the city must leave, and (O)those who are in the country must not enter [s]the city; 22 because these are (P)days of punishment, so that all things which have been written will be fulfilled. 23 Woe to those women who are pregnant, and to those who are nursing babies in those days; for (Q)there will be great distress upon the [t]land, and wrath to this people; 24 and they will fall by (R)the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations; and (S)Jerusalem will be (T)trampled underfoot by the Gentiles until (U)the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

The Return of Christ

25 “There will be [u]signs in the sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress among nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26 people fainting from fear and the expectation of the things that are coming upon the [v]world; for the powers of [w]the heavens will be shaken. 27 And (V)then they will see (W)the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because (X)your redemption is drawing near.”

29 And He told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees: 30 as soon as they put forth leaves, you see for yourselves and (Y)know that summer is now near. 31 So you too, when you see these things happening, [x]recognize that (Z)the kingdom of God is near. 32 Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all things take place. 33 (AA)Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.

34 “But (AB)be on your guard, so that your hearts will not be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that [y]this day will not come on you suddenly, like a trap; 35 for it will come upon all those who live on the face of all the earth. 36 But (AC)stay alert at all times, praying that you will have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to (AD)stand before the Son of Man.”

37 Now [z]during the day He was (AE)teaching in the temple, but [aa](AF)at evening He would go out and spend the night on (AG)the [ab]mountain that is called [ac]Olivet. 38 And all the people would get up (AH)very early in the morning to come to Him in the temple to listen to Him.

Preparing the Passover

22 (AI)Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called the (AJ)Passover, was approaching. 2 And the chief priests and the scribes (AK)were trying to find [ad]a way to put Him to death, since they were afraid of the people.

3 (AL)And (AM)Satan entered Judas, the one called Iscariot, [ae]who belonged to the number of the twelve. 4 And he left and discussed with the chief priests and (AN)officers how he was to betray Him to them. 5 And they were delighted, and agreed to give him money. 6 And so he consented, and began looking for a good opportunity to betray Him to them [af]away from the crowd.

7 (AO)Now the first day of Unleavened Bread came, on which (AP)the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 And so Jesus sent (AQ)Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, so that we may eat it.” 9 They said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare it?” 10 And He said to them, “When you have entered the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you; follow him into the house that he enters. 11 And you shall say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’ 12 And he will show you a large, furnished upstairs room; prepare it there.” 13 And they left and found everything just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.

The Lord’s Supper

14 (AR)When the hour came, He reclined at the table, and (AS)the apostles with Him. 15 And He said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I say to you, I shall not eat it again (AT)until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 (AU)And when He had taken a cup and (AV)given thanks, He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves; 18 for (AW)I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 And when He had taken some bread and (AX)given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body, which is being given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 20 And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup, which is (AY)poured out for you, is the (AZ)new covenant in My blood. 21 (BA)But behold, the hand of the one betraying Me is with [ag]Mine on the table. 22 For indeed, the Son of Man is going (BB)as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!” 23 And they began to debate among themselves which one of them it was who was going to do this.

Who Is Greatest

24 And (BC)a dispute also developed among them as to which one of them was regarded as being the greatest. 25 (BD)And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles domineer over them; and those who have authority over them are called ‘Benefactors.’ 26 But it is not this way for you; (BE)rather, the one who is the greatest among you must become like (BF)the youngest, and the leader like the servant. 27 For (BG)who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But (BH)I am among you as the one who serves.

28 “You are the ones who have stood by Me in My (BI)trials; 29 and just as My Father has granted Me a (BJ)kingdom, I grant you 30 that you may (BK)eat and drink at My table in My (BL)kingdom, and (BM)you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

31 “Simon, Simon, behold, (BN)Satan has [ah]demanded to (BO)sift you men like wheat; 32 but I (BP)have prayed for [ai]you, that [aj]your faith will not fail; and [ak]you, when you have [al]turned back, (BQ)strengthen your brothers.” 33 (BR)But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You both to prison and to death!” 34 But He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know Me.”

35 And He said to them, “(BS)When I sent you out without money belt and bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, did you?” They said, “No, nothing.” 36 And He said to them, “But now, [am]whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and [an]whoever has no sword is to sell his [ao]cloak and buy one. 37 For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me: ‘(BT)And He was counted with wrongdoers’; for (BU)that which refers to Me has its [ap]fulfillment.” 38 They said, “Lord, look, here are two (BV)swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.”

The Garden of Gethsemane

39 (BW)And He came out and went, (BX)as was His habit, to (BY)the Mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed Him. 40 (BZ)Now when He arrived at the place, He said to them, “(CA)Pray that you do not come into temptation.” 41 And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He (CB)knelt down and began to pray, 42 saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this (CC)cup from Me; (CD)yet not My will, but Yours be done.” 43 [[aq]Now an (CE)angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. 44 And (CF)being in agony, He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground]. 45 When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow, 46 and He said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and (CG)pray that you do not come into temptation.”

Jesus Betrayed by Judas

47 (CH)While He was still speaking, behold, a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading the way for them; and he approached Jesus to kiss Him. 48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49 When those who were around Him saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the (CI)sword?” 50 And one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51 But Jesus responded and said, “[ar]Stop! No more of this.” And He touched his ear and healed him. 52 And Jesus said to the chief priests and (CJ)officers of the temple and elders who had come against Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs (CK)as you would against a man inciting a revolt? 53 While I was with you daily in the temple, you did not lay hands on Me; but [as]this hour and the power of darkness are yours.”

Jesus’ Arrest

54 (CL)Now they arrested Him and led Him away, and brought Him to the house of the high priest; but (CM)Peter was following at a distance. 55 (CN)After they kindled a fire in the middle of (CO)the courtyard and sat down together, Peter was sitting among them. 56 And a slave woman, seeing him as he sat in the firelight, and staring at him, said, “This man was with Him as well.” 57 But he denied it, saying, “I do not know Him, woman!” 58 And a little later, (CP)another person saw him and said, “You are one of them too!” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!” 59 And after about an hour had passed, some other man began to insist, saying, “Certainly this man also was with Him, (CQ)for he, too, is a Galilean.” 60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about!” And immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61 And then (CR)the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, “(CS)Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.” 62 And he went out and wept bitterly.

63 (CT)The men who were holding [at]Jesus in custody began mocking Him and beating Him, 64 and they blindfolded Him and repeatedly asked Him, saying, “(CU)Prophesy, who is the one who hit You?” 65 And they were saying many other things against Him, (CV)blaspheming.

Jesus before the Sanhedrin

66 (CW)When it was day, (CX)the [au]Council of elders of the people assembled, both chief priests and scribes, and they led Him away to their (CY)council chamber, saying, 67 “(CZ)If You are the [av]Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe; 68 and if I ask a question, you will not answer. 69 (DA)But from now on (DB)the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” 70 And they all said, “So You are (DC)the Son of God?” And He said to them, “(DD)You say correctly that I am.” 71 And then they said, “What further need do we have of testimony? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth!”

Jesus before Pilate

23 Then the entire assembly of them set out and (DE)brought Him before Pilate. 2 (DF)And they began to bring charges against Him, saying, “We found this man (DG)misleading our nation and (DH)forbidding us to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is [aw]Christ, a King.” 3 Now Pilate asked Him, saying, “So You are the King of the Jews?” And He answered him and said, “(DI)It is as you say.” 4 But Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “(DJ)I find no grounds for charges in the case of this man.” 5 But they kept on insisting, saying, “He is stirring up the people, teaching all over Judea, (DK)starting from Galilee, as far as this place!”

6 Now when Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. 7 And when he learned that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to (DL)Herod, [ax]since he also was in Jerusalem [ay]at this time.

Jesus before Herod

8 Now Herod was overjoyed when he saw Jesus; for (DM)he had wanted to see Him for a long time, because he had been hearing about Him and was hoping to see some [az]sign performed by Him. 9 And he questioned Him [ba]at some length; but (DN)He offered him no answer at all. 10 Now the chief priests and the scribes stood there, vehemently charging Him. 11 And Herod, together with his soldiers, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, (DO)dressing Him in a brightly shining robe, and sent Him back to Pilate. 12 And so (DP)Herod and Pilate became friends with one another that very day; for previously, they had been enemies toward each other.

Pilate Seeks Jesus’ Release

13 Now Pilate summoned to himself the chief priests, the [bb](DQ)rulers, and the people, 14 and he said to them, “You brought this man to me on the ground that (DR)he is inciting the people to revolt; and behold, after examining Him before you, I (DS)have found no basis at all in the case of this man for the charges which you are bringing against Him. 15 No, nor has (DT)Herod, for he sent Him back to us; and behold, nothing deserving death has been done by Him. 16 Therefore I will [bc](DU)punish Him and release Him.” 17 [[bd]Now he was obligated to release to them at the feast one prisoner.]

18 But they cried out all together, saying, “(DV)Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas!” 19 (He was one who had been thrown into prison for a revolt that took place in the city, and for murder.) 20 But Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, addressed them again, 21 but they kept on crying out, saying, “Crucify, crucify Him!” 22 And he said to them a third time, “Why, what has this man done wrong? I have found [be]in His case no grounds for a sentence of death; therefore I will [bf](DW)punish Him and release Him.” 23 But they were insistent, with loud voices, demanding that He be crucified. And their voices began to prevail. 24 And so Pilate decided to have their demand carried out. 25 And he released the man for whom they were asking, who had been thrown into prison for a revolt and murder; but he handed Jesus over to their will.

Simon Carries the Cross

26 (DX)And when they led Him away, they seized a man, Simon of (DY)Cyrene, as he was coming in from the country, and placed on him the cross to carry behind Jesus.

27 Now following Him was a large crowd of the people, and of women who were [bg](DZ)mourning and grieving for Him. 28 But Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, stop weeping for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For behold, days are coming when they will say, ‘(EA)Blessed are those who cannot bear, and the wombs that have not given birth, and the breasts that have not nursed.’ 30 Then they will begin to (EB)say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ 31 For if they do these things [bh]when the tree is green, what will happen [bi]when it is dry?”

32 (EC)Now two others, who were criminals, were also being led away to be put to death with Him.

The Crucifixion

33 (ED)And when they came to the place called [bj]The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left. 34 [[bk]But Jesus was saying, “(EE)Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”] (EF)And they cast lots, dividing His garments among themselves. 35 And the people stood by, watching. And even the (EG)rulers were sneering at Him, saying, “He saved others; (EH)let Him save Himself if this is the [bl]Christ of God, His Chosen One.” 36 The soldiers also ridiculed Him, coming up to Him, (EI)offering Him sour wine, 37 and saying, “(EJ)If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!” 38 Now there was also an inscription above Him, “(EK)THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

39 (EL)One of the criminals who were hanged there was [bm]hurling abuse at Him, saying, “Are You not the [bn]Christ? (EM)Save Yourself and us!” 40 But the other responded, and rebuking him, said, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving [bo]what we deserve for our crimes; but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom!” 43 And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you will be with Me in (EN)Paradise.”

44 (EO)It was now about [bp](EP)the sixth hour, and darkness came over the entire land until [bq]the ninth hour, 45 [br]because the sun stopped shining; and (EQ)the veil of the temple was torn [bs]in two. 46 And Jesus, (ER)crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, (ES)into Your hands I entrust My spirit.” And having said this, He [bt]died. 47 (ET)Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he began (EU)praising God, saying, “This man was in fact [bu]innocent.” 48 And all the crowds who came together for this spectacle, after watching what had happened, began to return home, [bv](EV)beating their chests. 49 (EW)And all His acquaintances and (EX)the women who accompanied Him from Galilee were standing at a distance, seeing these things.

Jesus Is Buried

50 (EY)And a man named Joseph, who was a (EZ)member of the Council, a good and righteous man 51 (he had not consented to their plan and action), a man from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who was (FA)waiting for the kingdom of God— 52 this man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53 And he took it down and wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid Him in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever lain. 54 It was a [bw](FB)preparation day, and a Sabbath was about to [bx]begin. 55 Now (FC)the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed, and they saw the tomb and how His body was laid. 56 And then they returned and (FD)prepared spices and perfumes.

And (FE)on the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.

The Resurrection

24 (FF)But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of (FG)the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were perplexed about this, behold, (FH)two men suddenly (FI)stood near them in gleaming clothing; 5 and as [by]the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why are you seeking the living One among the dead? 6 He is not here, but He (FJ)has [bz]risen. Remember how He spoke to you (FK)while He was still in Galilee, 7 saying that (FL)the Son of Man must be handed over to sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise from the dead.” 8 And (FM)they remembered His words, 9 and returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven, and to all the rest. 10 Now these women were (FN)Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James; also the other women with them were telling these things to (FO)the apostles. 11 But these words appeared [ca]to them as nonsense, and they (FP)would not believe [cb]the women. 12 Nevertheless, Peter got up and (FQ)ran to the tomb; and when he stooped and looked in, he *saw the linen wrappings [cc]only; and he went away (FR)to his [cd]home, marveling at what had happened.

The Road to Emmaus

13 And behold, on that very day (FS)two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, which was [ce]sixty stadia from Jerusalem. 14 And they were talking with each other about all these things which had taken place. 15 While they were talking and discussing, Jesus Himself approached and began traveling with them. 16 But (FT)their eyes were kept from recognizing Him. 17 And He said to them, “What are these words that you are exchanging with one another as you are walking?” And they came to a stop, looking sad. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, answered and said to Him, “Are You possibly the only one living near Jerusalem [cf]who does not know about the things that happened here in these days?” 19 And He said to them, “What sort of things?” And they said to Him, “Those about (FU)Jesus the Nazarene, who proved to be a (FV)prophet mighty in deed and word in the sight of God and all the people, 20 and how the chief priests and our (FW)rulers handed Him over to be sentenced to death, and crucified Him. 21 But we [cg]were hoping that it was He who was going to (FX)redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. 22 But also some women among us left us bewildered. (FY)When they were at the tomb early in the morning, 23 and did not find His body, they came, saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said that He was alive. 24 And so some of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found it just exactly as the women also had said; but Him they did not see.” 25 And then He said to them, “[ch]You foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that (FZ)the prophets have spoken! 26 (GA)Was it not necessary for the [ci]Christ to suffer these things and to come into His glory?” 27 Then beginning [cj]with (GB)Moses and [ck]with all the (GC)Prophets, He explained to them the things written about Himself in all the Scriptures.

28 And they approached the village where they were going, and (GD)He gave the impression that He was going farther. 29 And so they strongly urged Him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is getting toward evening, and the day [cl]is now nearly over.” So He went in to stay with them. 30 And it came about, when He had reclined at the table with them, that He took the bread and (GE)blessed it, and He broke it and began giving it to them. 31 And then their (GF)eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from [cm]their sight. 32 They said to one another, “[cn]Were our hearts not burning within us when He was speaking to us on the road, while He (GG)was [co]explaining the Scriptures to us?” 33 And they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and (GH)found the eleven gathered together and (GI)those who were with them, 34 saying, “(GJ)The Lord has really risen and (GK)has appeared to Simon!” 35 They began to relate [cp]their experiences on the road, and how (GL)He was recognized by them at the breaking of the bread.

Other Appearances

36 Now while they were telling these things, (GM)Jesus Himself suddenly stood in their midst and *said to them, “Peace be to you.” 37 But they were startled and frightened, and thought that they were looking at (GN)a spirit. 38 And He said to them, “Why are you frightened, and why are doubts arising in your [cq]hearts? 39 (GO)See My hands and My feet, that [cr]it is I Myself; (GP)touch Me and see, because a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you plainly see that I have.” 40 And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. 41 While they still [cs](GQ)could not believe it because of their joy and astonishment, He said to them, “(GR)Have you anything here to eat?” 42 They served Him a piece of broiled fish; 43 and He took it and (GS)ate it in front of them.

44 Now He said to them, “(GT)These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all the things that are written about Me in the (GU)Law of Moses and the Prophets and (GV)the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then He (GW)opened their [ct]minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and He said to them, “(GX)So it is written, that the [cu]Christ would suffer and (GY)rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and that (GZ)repentance [cv]for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed [cw]in His name to (HA)all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are (HB)witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, (HC)I am sending the promise of My Father upon you; but (HD)you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”

The Ascension

50 And He led them out as far as (HE)Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. 51 While He was blessing them, He parted from them and was carried up into heaven. 52 And they, after worshiping Him, returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple [cx]praising God.

Jesus Predicts the Destruction of the Temple(G)

5 (H)Then, as some spoke of the temple, how it was [c]adorned with beautiful stones and donations, He said, 6 “These things which you see—the days will come in which (I)not one stone shall be left upon another that shall not be thrown down.”

The Signs of the Times and the End of the Age(J)

7 So they asked Him, saying, “Teacher, but when will these things be? And what sign will there be when these things are about to take place?”

Jesus and His Disciples Prepare the Passover

9 So they said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare?”

10 And He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house which he enters. 11 Then you shall say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ 12 Then he will show you a large, furnished upper room; there make ready.”

Jesus Institutes the Lord’s Supper

14 (BG)When the hour had come, He sat down, and the [k]twelve apostles with Him. 15 Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it (BH)until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”

17 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves; 18 for (BI)I say to you, [l]I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

Supplies for the Road

35 (CH)And He said to them, “When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?”

So they said, “Nothing.”

36 Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one. 37 For I say to you that this which is written must still be [n]accomplished in Me: (CI)‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’ For the things concerning Me have an end.”

38 So they said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.”

And He said to them, “It is enough.”

Peter Denies Jesus, and Weeps Bitterly(DC)

Jesus Mocked and Beaten(DL)

Jesus Handed Over to Pontius Pilate(DX)

23 Then (DY)the whole multitude of them arose and led Him to (DZ)Pilate. 2 And they began to (EA)accuse Him, saying, “We found this fellow (EB)perverting [v]the nation, and (EC)forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, saying (ED)that He Himself is Christ, a King.”

He answered him and said, “It is as you say.”

4 So Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd, (EF)“I find no fault in this Man.”

5 But they were the more fierce, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from (EG)Galilee to this place.”

Jesus Faces Herod

6 When Pilate heard [w]of Galilee, he asked if the Man were a Galilean. 7 And as soon as he knew that He belonged to (EH)Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time. 8 Now when Herod saw Jesus, (EI)he was exceedingly glad; for he had desired for a long time to see Him, because (EJ)he had heard many things about Him, and he hoped to see some miracle done by Him. 9 Then he questioned Him with many words, but He answered him (EK)nothing. 10 And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused Him. 11 (EL)Then Herod, with his [x]men of war, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, arrayed Him in a gorgeous robe, and sent Him back to Pilate. 12 That very day (EM)Pilate and Herod became friends with each other, for previously they had been at enmity with each other.

Taking the Place of Barabbas(EN)

13 (EO)Then Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people, 14 said to them, (EP)“You have brought this Man to me, as one who misleads the people. 20 Pilate, therefore, wishing to release Jesus, again called out to them. 21 But they shouted, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!”

22 Then he said to them the third time, “Why, what evil has He done? I have found no reason for death in Him. I will therefore chastise Him and let Him go.”

23 But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices that He be crucified. Jesus Buried in Joseph’s Tomb(FU)

The Disciples’ Eyes Opened

32 And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?” 33 So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and (HJ)has appeared to Simon!” 35 And they told about the things that had happened on the road, and how He was [as]known to them in the breaking of bread.

Jesus Appears to His Disciples(HK)

The Widow’s Offering(A)

21 As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury.(B) 2 He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. 3 “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. 4 All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”(C)

5 Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, 6 “As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another;(F) every one of them will be thrown down.”

7 “Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?”

8 He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them.(G) 9 When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.”

10 Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.(H) 11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.(I)

12 “But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. 13 And so you will bear testimony to me.(J) 14 But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves.(K) 15 For I will give you(L) words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. 16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends,(M) and they will put some of you to death. 17 Everyone will hate you because of me.(N) 18 But not a hair of your head will perish.(O) 19 Stand firm, and you will win life.(P)

20 “When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies,(Q) you will know that its desolation is near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city.(R) 22 For this is the time of punishment(S) in fulfillment(T) of all that has been written. 23 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. 24 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled(U) on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

25 “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.(V) 26 People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.(W) 27 At that time they will see the Son of Man(X) coming in a cloud(Y) with power and great glory. 28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”(Z)

29 He told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees. 30 When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. 31 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God(AA) is near.

32 “Truly I tell you, this generation(AB) will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.(AC)

34 “Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life,(AD) and that day will close on you suddenly(AE) like a trap. 35 For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth. 36 Be always on the watch, and pray(AF) that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”

37 Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple,(AG) and each evening he went out(AH) to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives,(AI) 38 and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple.(AJ)

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus(AK)

22 Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching,(AL) 2 and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus,(AM) for they were afraid of the people. 3 Then Satan(AN) entered Judas, called Iscariot,(AO) one of the Twelve. 4 And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard(AP) and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. 5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money.(AQ) 6 He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.

7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.(AW) 8 Jesus sent Peter and John,(AX) saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.”

9 “Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked.

10 He replied, “As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, 11 and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.”

13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them.(AY) So they prepared the Passover.

14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles(AZ) reclined at the table.(BA) 15 And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.(BB) 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”(BC)

17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it,(BD) and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”

20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant(BE) in my blood, which is poured out for you.[a] 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table.(BF) 22 The Son of Man(BG) will go as it has been decreed.(BH) But woe to that man who betrays him!” 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.

24 A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest.(BI) 25 Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest,(BJ) and the one who rules like the one who serves.(BK) 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? 34 Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”

35 Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals,(BU) did you lack anything?”

“Nothing,” they answered.

36 He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 37 It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’[b];(BV) and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.”

38 The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.”

“That’s enough!” he replied.

Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives(BW)

39 Jesus went out as usual(BX) to the Mount of Olives,(BY) and his disciples followed him. 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.”(BZ) 41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down(CA) and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup(CB) from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”(CC) 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.(CD) 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.[c]

45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”(CE)

Jesus Arrested(CF)

47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”

49 When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?”(CG) 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.

51 But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.

52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard,(CH) and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts,(CI) and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour(CJ)—when darkness reigns.”(CK)

Peter Disowns Jesus(CL)

54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest.(CM) Peter followed at a distance.(CN) 55 And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.”

57 But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.

58 A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”

“Man, I am not!” Peter replied.

59 About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.”(CO)

60 Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord(CP) turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.”(CQ) 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.

The Guards Mock Jesus(CR)

63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, “Prophesy! Who hit you?” 65 And they said many other insulting things to him.(CS)

Jesus Before Pilate and Herod(CT)(CU)(CV)

66 At daybreak the council(CW) of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together,(CX) and Jesus was led before them. 67 “If you are the Messiah,” they said, “tell us.”

Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me, 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer.(CY) 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”(CZ)

70 They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?”(DA)

He replied, “You say that I am.”(DB)

71 Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.”

23 Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate.(DC) 2 And they began to accuse him, saying, “We have found this man subverting our nation.(DD) He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar(DE) and claims to be Messiah, a king.”(DF)

3 So Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”

“You have said so,” Jesus replied.

4 Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.”(DG)

5 But they insisted, “He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. He started in Galilee(DH) and has come all the way here.”

6 On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean.(DI) 7 When he learned that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod,(DJ) who was also in Jerusalem at that time.

8 When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him.(DK) From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform a sign of some sort. 9 He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer.(DL) 10 The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing him. 11 Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe,(DM) they sent him back to Pilate. 12 That day Herod and Pilate became friends(DN)—before this they had been enemies.

13 Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people, 14 and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him.(DO) 15 Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death. 16 Therefore, I will punish him(DP) and then release him.” [17] [d]

18 But the whole crowd shouted, “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!”(DQ) 19 (Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.)

20 Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again. 21 But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”

22 For the third time he spoke to them: “Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore I will have him punished and then release him.”(DR)

23 But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed. 24 So Pilate decided to grant their demand. 25 He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.

The Crucifixion of Jesus(DS)

26 As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene,(DT) who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.(DU) 27 A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed(DV) for him. 28 Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children.(DW) 29 For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’(DX) 30 Then

“‘they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!”
    and to the hills, “Cover us!”’[e](DY)

31 For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”(DZ)

32 Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed.(EA) 33 When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34 Jesus said, “Father,(EB) forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”[f](EC) And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(ED)

35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him.(EE) They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”(EF)

36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him.(EG) They offered him wine vinegar(EH) 37 and said, “If you are the king of the Jews,(EI) save yourself.”

38 There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews.(EJ)

39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”(EK)

40 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”(EL)

42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.[g]”(EM)

43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”(EN)

The Death of Jesus(EO)

44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,(EP) 45 for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple(EQ) was torn in two.(ER) 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice,(ES) “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”[h](ET) When he had said this, he breathed his last.(EU)

47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God(EV) and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” 48 When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts(EW) and went away. 49 But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee,(EX) stood at a distance,(EY) watching these things.

The Burial of Jesus(EZ)

50 Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, 51 who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God.(FA) 52 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body. 53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. 54 It was Preparation Day,(FB) and the Sabbath was about to begin.

55 The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee(FC) followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. 56 Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes.(FD) But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.(FE)

Jesus Has Risen(FF)

24 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared(FG) and went to the tomb. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.(FH) 4 While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning(FI) stood beside them. 5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6 He is not here; he has risen! On the Road to Emmaus

13 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles[i] from Jerusalem.(FS) 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them;(FT) 16 but they were kept from recognizing him.(FU)

17 He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”

They stood still, their faces downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas,(FV) asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”

19 “What things?” he asked.

“About Jesus of Nazareth,”(FW) they replied. “He was a prophet,(FX) powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. 20 The chief priests and our rulers(FY) handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel.(FZ) And what is more, it is the third day(GA) since all this took place. 22 In addition, some of our women amazed us.(GB) They went to the tomb early this morning 23 but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”(GC)

25 He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?”(GD) 27 And beginning with Moses(GE) and all the Prophets,(GF) he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.(GG)

28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. 29 But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.

40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence.(GR)

44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you:(GS) Everything must be fulfilled(GT) that is written about me in the Law of Moses,(GU) the Prophets(GV) and the Psalms.”(GW)

45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer(GX) and rise from the dead on the third day,(GY) 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name(GZ) to all nations,(HA) beginning at Jerusalem.(HB) 48 You are witnesses(HC) of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised;(HD) but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

The Ascension of Jesus

50 When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany,(HE) he lifted up his hands and blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven.(HF) 52 Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. 53 And they stayed continually at the temple,(HG) praising God.

The Curses at Mount Ebal

27 Then Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying, “Keep all the commandments which I am commanding you today. 2 (A)So it shall be on the day when you cross the Jordan to the land which the Lord your God is giving you, that you shall set up for yourself large stones and coat them with lime 3 and write on them all the words of this Law, when you cross over, so that you may enter the land which the Lord your God is giving you, (B)a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the Lord, the God of your fathers, [a]promised you. 4 So it shall be when you cross the Jordan, you shall set up these stones (C)on Mount Ebal, [b]as I am commanding you today, and you shall coat them with lime. 5 Moreover, you shall build there an altar to the Lord your God, an altar of stones; you (D)shall not wield an iron tool on them. 6 You shall build the altar of the Lord your God of [c]uncut stones, and you shall offer on it burnt offerings to the Lord your God; 7 and you shall sacrifice peace offerings and eat there, and (E)rejoice before the Lord your God. 8 You shall write on the [d]stones all the words of this Law very clearly.”

9 Then Moses and the Levitical priests spoke to all Israel, saying, “Be silent and listen, Israel! This day you have become a people for the Lord your God. 10 So you shall [e]obey the Lord your God, and do His commandments and His statutes which I am commanding you today.”

11 Moses also commanded the people on that day, saying, 12 “When you cross the Jordan, these tribes shall stand on (F)Mount Gerizim to bless the people: (G)Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin. 13 For the curse, these tribes shall stand on Mount Ebal: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali. 14 The Levites shall then respond and say to all the people of Israel with a loud voice,

15 ‘Cursed is the person who makes (H)a carved image or cast metal image, an abomination to the Lord, the work of the hands of a craftsman, and sets it up in secret.’ And (I)all the people shall reply and say, ‘Amen.’

16 ‘(J)Cursed is one who treats his father or mother contemptuously.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

17 ‘(K)Cursed is one who displaces his neighbor’s boundary marker.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

18 ‘(L)Cursed is one who misleads a person who is blind on the road.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

19 ‘(M)Cursed is one who distorts the justice due a stranger, an [f]orphan, or a widow.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

20 ‘(N)Cursed is he who sleeps with his father’s wife, because he has [g]uncovered his father’s garment.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

21 ‘(O)Cursed is one who has sexual intercourse with any animal.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

22 ‘(P)Cursed is he who sleeps with his sister, the daughter of his father or of his mother.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

23 ‘(Q)Cursed is he who sleeps with his mother-in-law.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

24 ‘(R)Cursed is he who attacks his neighbor in secret.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

25 ‘(S)Cursed is he who accepts a bribe to attack an innocent person.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

26 ‘(T)Cursed is anyone who does not fulfill the words of this Law by doing them.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

The Law Inscribed on Stones

Curses Pronounced from Mount Ebal

11 And Moses commanded the people on the same day, saying, 12 “These shall stand (I)on Mount Gerizim to bless the people, when you have crossed over the Jordan: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin; 13 and (J)these shall stand on Mount Ebal to curse: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.

14 “And (K)the Levites shall speak with a loud voice and say to all the men of Israel: 15 (L)‘Cursed is the one who makes a carved or molded image, [b]an abomination to the Lord, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and sets it up in secret.’

27 Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people: “Keep all these commands(A) that I give you today. 2 When you have crossed the Jordan(B) into the land the Lord your God is giving you, set up some large stones(C) and coat them with plaster.(D) 3 Write on them all the words of this law when you have crossed over to enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey,(E) just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised you. 4 And when you have crossed the Jordan, set up these stones on Mount Ebal,(F) as I command you today, and coat them with plaster. 5 Build there an altar(G) to the Lord your God, an altar of stones. Do not use any iron tool(H) on them. 6 Build the altar of the Lord your God with fieldstones and offer burnt offerings on it to the Lord your God. 7 Sacrifice fellowship offerings(I) there, eating them and rejoicing(J) in the presence of the Lord your God.(K) 8 And you shall write very clearly all the words of this law on these stones(L) you have set up.”(M)

Curses From Mount Ebal

9 Then Moses and the Levitical(N) priests said to all Israel, “Be silent, Israel, and listen! You have now become the people of the Lord your God.(O) 10 Obey the Lord your God and follow his commands and decrees that I give you today.”

11 On the same day Moses commanded the people:

12 When you have crossed the Jordan, these tribes shall stand on Mount Gerizim(P) to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar,(Q) Joseph and Benjamin.(R) 13 And these tribes shall stand on Mount Ebal(S) to pronounce curses: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan and Naphtali.

14 The Levites shall recite to all the people of Israel in a loud voice:

15 “Cursed is anyone who makes an idol(T)—a thing detestable(U) to the Lord, the work of skilled hands—and sets it up in secret.”

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”(V)

16 “Cursed is anyone who dishonors their father or mother.”(W)

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”

17 “Cursed is anyone who moves their neighbor’s boundary stone.”(X)

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”

18 “Cursed is anyone who leads the blind astray on the road.”(Y)

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”

19 “Cursed is anyone who withholds justice from the foreigner,(Z) the fatherless or the widow.”(AA)

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”

20 “Cursed is anyone who sleeps with his father’s wife, for he dishonors his father’s bed.”(AB)

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”

21 “Cursed is anyone who has sexual relations with any animal.”(AC)
