³⁵ They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. ³⁶ As he went along, people spread their cloaks^(A) on the road.

³⁷ When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives,^(B) the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:

³⁹ Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”^(E)

⁴⁰ “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”^(F)

⁴¹ As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it^{(G) 42} and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. ⁴³ The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.^{(H) 44} They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls.^(I) They will not leave one stone on another,^(J) because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming^(K) to you.”

²⁰ Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law;^(A) rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.^(B)

Righteousness Through Faith

²¹ But now apart from the law the righteousness of God^(C) has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify.^{(D) 22} This righteousness^(E) is given through faith^(F) in^[a] Jesus Christ^(G) to all who believe.^(H) There is no difference between Jew and Gentile,^{(I) 23} for all have sinned^(J) and fall short of the glory of God, ²⁴ and all are justified^(K) freely by his grace^(L) through the redemption^(M) that came by Christ Jesus. ²⁵ God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement,^[b](N) through the shedding of his blood^(O)—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished^(P)— ²⁶ he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

²⁷ Where, then, is boasting?^(Q) It is excluded. Because of what law? The law that requires works? No, because of the law that requires faith. ²⁸ For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.^{(R) 29} Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too,^{(S) 30} since there is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith.^{(T) 31} Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law.
