Instructions

17 Now He said to His disciples, (A)It is inevitable that [a]stumbling blocks come, but woe to one through whom they come! (B)It is better for him if a millstone is hung around his neck and he [b]is thrown into the sea, than that he may cause one of these little ones to [c]sin. [d]Be on your guard! (C)If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you (D)seven times a day, and returns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you shall forgive him.”

(E)The apostles said to (F)the Lord, “Increase our faith!” But (G)the Lord said, “If you [e]had faith [f]the size of (H)a mustard seed, you could say to this (I)mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and be planted in the sea’; and it would [g]obey you.

“Now which of you, having a slave plowing or tending sheep, will say to him after he comes in from the field, ‘Come immediately and recline at the table to eat’? On the contrary, will he not say to him, ‘(J)Prepare something for me to eat, and properly [h]clothe yourself and serve me while I eat and drink; and [i]afterward you [j]may eat and drink’? He does not thank the slave because he did the things which were commanded, does he? 10 So you too, when you do all the things which were commanded you, say, ‘We are [k]unworthy slaves; we have done only that which we ought to have done.’”

Ten Men with Leprosy Healed

11 While He was (K)on the way to Jerusalem, (L)He was passing [l]between Samaria and Galilee. 12 And as He entered a village, ten men with leprosy who (M)stood at a distance met Him; 13 and they raised their voices, saying, “Jesus, (N)Master, have mercy on us!” 14 When He saw them, He said to them, (O)Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they were going, they were cleansed. 15 Now one of them, when he saw that he had been healed, turned back, (P)glorifying God with a loud voice, 16 and he fell on his face at His feet, giving thanks to Him. And he was a (Q)Samaritan. 17 But Jesus responded and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But the nine—where are they? 18 [m]Was no one found who returned to (R)give glory to God, except this foreigner?” 19 And He said to him, “Stand up and go; (S)your faith has [n]made you well.”

Second Coming Foretold

20 Now He was questioned by the Pharisees (T)as to when the kingdom of God was coming, and He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God is not coming with [o](U)signs that can be observed; 21 nor will (V)they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or, ‘There it is!’ For behold, the kingdom of God is [p]in your midst.”

22 And He said to the disciples, (W)The days will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. 23 (X)And they will say to you, ‘Look there,’ or, ‘Look here!’ Do not leave, and do not run after them. 24 (Y)For just like the lightning, when it flashes out of one part [q]of the sky, shines to the other part [r]of the sky, so will the Son of Man be in His day. 25 (Z)But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. 26 (AA)And just as it happened (AB)in the days of Noah, so will it also be in the days of the Son of Man: 27 people were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, and they were being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 [s]It was the same as happened in (AC)the days of Lot: they were eating, they were drinking, they were buying, they were selling, they were planting, and they were building; 29 but on the day that Lot left Sodom, it rained fire and [t]brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. 30 It will be [u]just the same on the day that the Son of Man (AD)is revealed. 31 On that day, the one who will be (AE)on the [v]housetop, [w]with his goods in the house, must not go down to take them out; and likewise the one in the field must not turn back. 32 (AF)Remember Lot’s wife. 33 (AG)Whoever strives to [x]save his [y]life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will keep it. 34 I tell you, on that night there will be two in one bed; one will be taken and the other will be left. 35 (AH)There will be two women grinding at the same place; one will be taken and the other will be left. 36 [[z](AI)Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other will be left.”] 37 And responding, they *said to Him, “Where, Lord?” And He said to them, (AJ)Where the body is, there also the [aa]vultures will be gathered.”

Parables on Prayer

18 Now He was telling them a parable to show that at all times they (AK)ought to pray and not (AL)become discouraged, saying, “In a certain city there was a judge who did not fear God and did not (AM)respect any person. Now there was a widow in that city, and she kept coming to him, saying, ‘Give me justice against my [ab]opponent.’ For a while he was unwilling; but later he said to himself, ‘Even though I do not fear God nor (AN)respect any person, yet (AO)because this widow is bothering me, I will give her justice; otherwise [ac]by continually coming she will (AP)wear me out.’” And (AQ)the Lord said, “Listen to what the unrighteous judge *said; now, will God not (AR)bring about justice for His (AS)elect who cry out to Him day [ad]and night, and will He (AT)delay long for them? I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, (AU)will He find [ae]faith on the earth?”

The Pharisee and the Tax Collector

Now He also told this parable to some people who (AV)trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and (AW)viewed others with contempt: 10 “Two men (AX)went up into the [af]temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee (AY)stood and began praying this in regard to himself: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, crooked, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I (AZ)fast twice a week; I (BA)pay tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector, (BB)standing some distance away, (BC)was even unwilling to raise his eyes toward heaven, but (BD)was beating his chest, saying, ‘God, be [ag]merciful to me, the sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other one; (BE)for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

15 (BF)Now they were bringing even their babies to Him so that He would touch them; but when the disciples saw it, they began rebuking them. 16 But Jesus called for [ah]the little ones, saying, “Allow the children to come to Me, and do not [ai]forbid them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 17 Truly I say to you, (BG)whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all.”

The Rich Young Ruler

18 (BH)A ruler questioned Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 19 But Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me [aj]good? No one is [ak]good except God alone. 20 You know the commandments, ‘(BI)Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not give false testimony, Honor your father and mother.’” 21 And he said, “All these things I have kept since my youth.” 22 Now when Jesus heard this, He said to him, “One thing you still lack; (BJ)sell all that you possess and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have (BK)treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” 23 But when he had heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely wealthy. 24 And Jesus looked at him and said, (BL)How hard it is for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God! 25 For (BM)it is easier for a camel to [al]go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God!” 26 Those who heard Him said, “And so who can be saved?” 27 But He said, (BN)The things that are impossible with people are possible with God.”

28 Peter said, “Behold, (BO)we have left [am]our own homes and followed You.” 29 And He said to them, “Truly I say to you, (BP)there is no one who has left house, or wife, or brothers, or parents, or children for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 who will not receive many times as much at this time, and in (BQ)the age to come, eternal life.”

31 (BR)Now He took the twelve aside and said to them, “Behold, (BS)we are going up to Jerusalem, and (BT)all the things that have been written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished. 32 (BU)For He will be [an]handed over to the Gentiles, and will be ridiculed, and abused, and spit upon, 33 and after they have flogged Him, they will kill Him; and on the third day He will rise.” 34 [ao](BV)The disciples understood none of these things, and the meaning of this statement was hidden from them, and they did not comprehend the things that were said.

Bartimaeus Receives Sight

35 (BW)Now as [ap](BX)Jesus was approaching Jericho, a man who was blind was sitting by the road, begging. 36 But when he heard a crowd going by, he began inquiring what this was. 37 They told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. 38 And he called out, saying, “Jesus, (BY)Son of David, have mercy on me!” 39 Those who led the way were sternly telling him to be quiet; but he kept crying out all the more, “(BZ)Son of David, have mercy on me!” 40 And Jesus stopped and commanded that he be brought to Him; and when he came near, He asked him, 41 “What do you want Me to do for you?” And he said, “Lord, I want to regain my sight!” 42 And Jesus said to him, “Regain your sight; (CA)your faith has [aq]made you well.” 43 And immediately he regained his sight and began following Him, (CB)glorifying God; and when (CC)all the people saw it, they gave praise to God.

Zaccheus Converted

19 Jesus (CD)entered Jericho and was passing through. And [ar]there was a man called by the name of Zaccheus; he was a chief tax collector and he was rich. Zaccheus was trying to see who Jesus was, and he was unable due to the crowd, because he was short in stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up a [as](CE)sycamore tree in order to see Him, because He was about to pass through that way. And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, “Zaccheus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” And he hurried and came down, and received Him [at]joyfully. When the people saw this, they all began to complain, saying, “He has gone in [au]to be the guest of a man who is a sinner!” But Zaccheus stopped and said to (CF)the Lord, “Behold, Lord, half of my possessions I am giving to the poor, and if I have (CG)extorted anything from anyone, I am giving back (CH)four times as much.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is (CI)a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

Parable of the Ten Minas

11 Now while they were listening to these things, Jesus went on to tell a parable, because (CJ)He was near Jerusalem and they thought that (CK)the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately. 12 So He said, (CL)A nobleman went to a distant country to receive a kingdom for himself, and then to return. 13 And he called ten of his own slaves and gave them ten [av]minas, and said to them, ‘Do business with this money [aw]until I come back.’ 14 But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’ 15 When he returned after receiving the kingdom, he ordered that these slaves, to whom he had given the money, be summoned to him so that he would learn how much they had made by the business they had done. 16 The first slave appeared, saying, ‘[ax]Master, your [ay]mina has made ten minas more.’ 17 And he said to him, ‘Well done, good slave; since you have been (CM)faithful in a very little thing, you are to have authority over ten cities.’ 18 The second one came, saying, ‘Your [az]mina, [ba]master, has made five minas.’ 19 And he said to him also, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’ 20 And then another came, saying, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I kept tucked away in a handkerchief; 21 for I was afraid of you, because you are a demanding man; you take up what you did not lay down, and reap what you did not sow.’ 22 He *said to him, ‘[bb]From your own lips I will judge you, you worthless slave. Did you know that I am a demanding man, taking up what I did not lay down, and reaping what I did not sow? 23 And so why did you not put my money in the bank, and when I came back, I would have collected it with interest?’ 24 And then he said to the other slaves who were present, ‘Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’ 25 And they said to him, ‘Master, he already has ten minas.’ 26 (CN)I tell you that to everyone who has, more shall be given, but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away. 27 But as for (CO)these enemies of mine who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and (CP)slaughter them in my presence.’”

Triumphal Entry

28 After Jesus said these things, He (CQ)was going on ahead, (CR)going up to Jerusalem.

29 (CS)When He approached Bethphage and (CT)Bethany, near the [bc]mountain that is called (CU)Olivet, He sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village [bd]ahead of you; there, as you enter, you will find a colt tied, on which no one yet has ever sat; untie it and bring it here. 31 And if anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘[be]The Lord has need of it.’” 32 So those who were sent left and found it just as He had told them. 33 And as they were untying the colt, its [bf]owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 They said, “[bg]The Lord has need of it.” 35 And they brought it to Jesus, (CV)and they threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 Now as He was going, they were spreading their cloaks on the road. 37 And as soon as He was approaching, near the descent of (CW)the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to (CX)praise God [bh]joyfully with a loud voice for all the [bi]miracles which they had seen, 38 [bj]shouting:

(CY)Blessed is the (CZ)King, the One who comes in the name of the Lord;
Peace in heaven and (DA)glory in the highest!”

39 (DB)And yet some of the Pharisees [bk]in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples!” 40 Jesus replied, “I tell you, if these stop speaking, (DC)the stones will cry out!”

41 When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and (DD)wept over it, 42 saying, “If you had known on this day, even you, the conditions for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes. 43 For the days will come upon you [bl]when your enemies will (DE)put up a [bm]barricade against you, and (DF)surround you and hem you in on every side, 44 and they will level you to the ground, and throw down your children within you, and (DG)they will not leave in you one stone upon [bn]another, because you did not recognize (DH)the time of your visitation.”

Traders Driven from the Temple

45 (DI)And Jesus entered the temple grounds and began to drive out those who were selling, 46 saying to them, “It is written: ‘(DJ)And My house will be a house of prayer,’ (DK)but you have made it a den of robbers.”

47 And (DL)He was teaching daily in the temple; but the chief priests and the scribes and the leading men among the people (DM)were trying to put Him to death, 48 and yet they could not find [bo]anything that they might do, for all the people were hanging on to [bp]every word He said.

Jesus’ Authority Questioned

20 (DN)On one of the days while (DO)He was teaching the people in the temple and (DP)preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders (DQ)confronted Him, and they declared, saying to Him, “Tell us by what authority You are doing these things, or who is the one who gave You this authority?” But He replied to them, “I will also ask you a [bq]question, and you tell Me: Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?” They discussed among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us to death, since they are convinced that John was a (DR)prophet.” And so they answered that they did not know where it came from. And Jesus said to them, “Neither am I telling you by what authority I do these things.”

Parable of the Vine-growers

(DS)But He began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard and leased it to [br]vine-growers, and went on a journey for a long time. 10 At the harvest time he sent a slave to the vine-growers, so that they would give him his share of the produce of the vineyard; but the vine-growers beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 And he proceeded to send another slave; but they beat him also and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. 12 And he proceeded to send a third; but this one too they wounded and threw out. 13 Now the [bs]owner of the vineyard said, ‘What am I to do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will (DT)respect him.’ 14 But when the vine-growers saw him, they discussed with one another, saying, ‘This is the heir; let’s kill him so that the inheritance will be ours.’ 15 And so they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What, then, will the [bt]owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and (DU)put these vine-growers to death, and will give the vineyard to others.” However, when they heard this, they said, “(DV)May it never happen!” 17 But [bu]Jesus looked at them and said, “Then what is this statement that has been written:

(DW)A stone which the builders rejected,
This has become (DX)the [bv]chief cornerstone’?

18 (DY)Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will crush him.”

Paying Taxes to Caesar

19 The scribes and the chief priests (DZ)tried to lay hands on Him that very hour, and yet they feared the people; for they were aware that He had spoken this parable against them. 20 (EA)And so they watched Him [bw]closely, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, in order (EB)that they might catch Him in some statement, so that they could hand Him over to the jurisdiction and authority of (EC)the governor. 21 And the spies questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, we know that You speak and teach correctly, and You [bx]are not partial to anyone, but You teach the way of God on the basis of truth. 22 Is it [by]permissible for us (ED)to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” 23 But He saw through their trickery and said to them, 24 “Show Me a [bz]denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?” They said, “Caesar’s.” 25 And He said to them, “Then (EE)pay to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” 26 And they were unable to (EF)catch Him in a statement in the presence of the people; and they were amazed at His answer, and said nothing.

Is There a Resurrection?

27 (EG)Now some of the (EH)Sadducees (who maintain that there is no resurrection) came to Him, 28 and they questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that (EI)if [ca]a man’s brother dies, [cb]leaving a wife, and he is childless, that his brother is to [cc]marry the wife and raise up children [cd]for his brother. 29 So then, there were seven brothers; and the first took a wife and died childless; 30 and the second 31 and the third [ce]married her; and in the same way [cf]all seven [cg]died, leaving no children. 32 Finally the woman also died. 33 Therefore, in the resurrection, [ch]which one’s wife does the woman become? For [ci]all seven [cj]married her.”

34 Jesus said to them, “The sons of (EJ)this age marry and the women are given in marriage, 35 but those who are considered worthy to attain to (EK)that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; 36 for they cannot even die anymore, for they are like angels, and are (EL)sons of God, being [ck]sons of the resurrection. 37 But as for the fact that the dead are raised, even Moses revealed this in (EM)the passage about the burning bush, where he calls the Lord (EN)the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. 38 (EO)Now He is not the God of the dead, but of the living; for (EP)all live to Him.” 39 Some of the scribes answered and said, “Teacher, You have spoken well.” 40 For (EQ)they did not have the courage to question Him any longer about anything.

41 (ER)But He said to them, “How is it that they say the [cl]Christ is (ES)David’s son? 42 For David himself says in the book of Psalms,

(ET)The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit at My right hand,
43 (EU)Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”’

44 Therefore David calls Him ‘Lord,’ and so how is He his son?”

45 (EV)And while all the people were listening, He said to the disciples, 46 “Beware of the scribes, (EW)who like to walk around in long robes, and love personal greetings in the marketplaces, and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets, 47 who [cm]devour widows’ houses, and for appearance’s sake offer long prayers. These will receive all the more condemnation.”

The Widow’s Gift

21 (EX)Now He looked up and saw the wealthy putting their gifts into the temple treasury. And He saw a poor widow putting [cn]in (EY)two [co]lepta coins. And He said, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all of them; for they all [cp]contributed to the [cq]offering from their [cr]surplus; but she, from her poverty, put in all [cs]that she had (EZ)to live on.”

(FA)And while some were talking about the temple, that it was decorated with beautiful stones and [ct]vowed gifts, He said, As for these things which you are observing, the days will come when (FB)there will not be left one stone upon [cu]another, which will not be torn down.”

They asked Him questions, saying, “Teacher, when therefore will these things happen? And what will be the [cv]sign when these things are about to take place?” And He said, “See to it that you are not misled; for many will come in My name, saying, ‘(FC)I am He,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ (FD)Do not go after them. And when you hear of wars and revolts, do not be alarmed; for these things must take place first, but the end will not follow immediately.”

Things to Come

10 Then He continued by saying to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, 11 and there will be [cw]massive earthquakes, and in various places plagues and famines; and there will be terrible sights and great [cx]signs from heaven.

12 “But before all these things, (FE)they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, turning you over to the synagogues and prisons, [cy]bringing you before kings and governors on account of My name. 13 (FF)It will lead to [cz]an opportunity for your testimony. 14 (FG)So [da]make up your minds not to prepare beforehand to defend yourselves; 15 for (FH)I will provide you [db]eloquence and wisdom which none of your adversaries will be able to oppose or refute. 16 But you will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, other relatives, and friends, and they will put some of you to death, 17 and you will be hated by all people because of My name. 18 And yet (FI)not a hair of your head will perish. 19 (FJ)By your endurance you will gain your [dc]lives.

20 “But when you see Jerusalem (FK)surrounded by armies, then [dd]recognize that her desolation is near. 21 Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains, and those who are inside [de]the city must leave, and (FL)those who are in the country must not enter [df]the city; 22 because these are (FM)days of punishment, so that all things which have been written will be fulfilled. 23 Woe to those women who are pregnant, and to those who are nursing babies in those days; for (FN)there will be great distress upon the [dg]land, and wrath to this people; 24 and they will fall by (FO)the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations; and (FP)Jerusalem will be (FQ)trampled underfoot by the Gentiles until (FR)the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

The Return of Christ

25 “There will be [dh]signs in the sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress among nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26 people fainting from fear and the expectation of the things that are coming upon the [di]world; for the powers of [dj]the heavens will be shaken. 27 And (FS)then they will see (FT)the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because (FU)your redemption is drawing near.”

29 And He told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees: 30 as soon as they put forth leaves, you see for yourselves and (FV)know that summer is now near. 31 So you too, when you see these things happening, [dk]recognize that (FW)the kingdom of God is near. 32 Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all things take place. 33 (FX)Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.

34 “But (FY)be on your guard, so that your hearts will not be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that [dl]this day will not come on you suddenly, like a trap; 35 for it will come upon all those who live on the face of all the earth. 36 But (FZ)stay alert at all times, praying that you will have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to (GA)stand before the Son of Man.”

37 Now [dm]during the day He was (GB)teaching in the temple, but [dn](GC)at evening He would go out and spend the night on (GD)the [do]mountain that is called [dp]Olivet. 38 And all the people would get up (GE)very early in the morning to come to Him in the temple to listen to Him.

Preparing the Passover

22 (GF)Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called the (GG)Passover, was approaching. And the chief priests and the scribes (GH)were trying to find [dq]a way to put Him to death, since they were afraid of the people.

(GI)And (GJ)Satan entered Judas, the one called Iscariot, [dr]who belonged to the number of the twelve. And he left and discussed with the chief priests and (GK)officers how he was to betray Him to them. And they were delighted, and agreed to give him money. And so he consented, and began looking for a good opportunity to betray Him to them [ds]away from the crowd.

(GL)Now the first day of Unleavened Bread came, on which (GM)the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. And so Jesus sent (GN)Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, so that we may eat it.” They said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare it?” 10 And He said to them, “When you have entered the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you; follow him into the house that he enters. 11 And you shall say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’ 12 And he will show you a large, furnished upstairs room; prepare it there.” 13 And they left and found everything just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.

The Lord’s Supper

14 (GO)When the hour came, He reclined at the table, and (GP)the apostles with Him. 15 And He said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I say to you, I shall not eat it again (GQ)until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 (GR)And when He had taken a cup and (GS)given thanks, He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves; 18 for (GT)I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 And when He had taken some bread and (GU)given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body, which is being given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 20 And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup, which is (GV)poured out for you, is the (GW)new covenant in My blood. 21 (GX)But behold, the hand of the one betraying Me is with [dt]Mine on the table. 22 For indeed, the Son of Man is going (GY)as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!” 23 And they began to debate among themselves which one of them it was who was going to do this.

Who Is Greatest

24 And (GZ)a dispute also developed among them as to which one of them was regarded as being the greatest. 25 (HA)And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles domineer over them; and those who have authority over them are called ‘Benefactors.’ 26 But it is not this way for you; (HB)rather, the one who is the greatest among you must become like (HC)the youngest, and the leader like the servant. 27 For (HD)who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But (HE)I am among you as the one who serves.

28 “You are the ones who have stood by Me in My (HF)trials; 29 and just as My Father has granted Me a (HG)kingdom, I grant you 30 that you may (HH)eat and drink at My table in My (HI)kingdom, and (HJ)you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

31 “Simon, Simon, behold, (HK)Satan has [du]demanded to (HL)sift you men like wheat; 32 but I (HM)have prayed for [dv]you, that [dw]your faith will not fail; and [dx]you, when you have [dy]turned back, (HN)strengthen your brothers.” 33 (HO)But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You both to prison and to death!” 34 But He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know Me.”

35 And He said to them, (HP)When I sent you out without money belt and bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, did you?” They said, “No, nothing.” 36 And He said to them, “But now, [dz]whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and [ea]whoever has no sword is to sell his [eb]cloak and buy one. 37 For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me: ‘(HQ)And He was counted with wrongdoers’; for (HR)that which refers to Me has its [ec]fulfillment.” 38 They said, “Lord, look, here are two (HS)swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.”

The Garden of Gethsemane

39 (HT)And He came out and went, (HU)as was His habit, to (HV)the Mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed Him. 40 (HW)Now when He arrived at the place, He said to them, (HX)Pray that you do not come into temptation.” 41 And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He (HY)knelt down and began to pray, 42 saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this (HZ)cup from Me; (IA)yet not My will, but Yours be done.” 43 [[ed]Now an (IB)angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. 44 And (IC)being in agony, He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground]. 45 When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow, 46 and He said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and (ID)pray that you do not come into temptation.”

Jesus Betrayed by Judas

47 (IE)While He was still speaking, behold, a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading the way for them; and he approached Jesus to kiss Him. 48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49 When those who were around Him saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the (IF)sword?” 50 And one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51 But Jesus responded and said, [ee]Stop! No more of this.” And He touched his ear and healed him. 52 And Jesus said to the chief priests and (IG)officers of the temple and elders who had come against Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs (IH)as you would against a man inciting a revolt? 53 While I was with you daily in the temple, you did not lay hands on Me; but [ef]this hour and the power of darkness are yours.”

Jesus’ Arrest

54 (II)Now they arrested Him and led Him away, and brought Him to the house of the high priest; but (IJ)Peter was following at a distance. 55 (IK)After they kindled a fire in the middle of (IL)the courtyard and sat down together, Peter was sitting among them. 56 And a slave woman, seeing him as he sat in the firelight, and staring at him, said, “This man was with Him as well.” 57 But he denied it, saying, “I do not know Him, woman!” 58 And a little later, (IM)another person saw him and said, “You are one of them too!” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!” 59 And after about an hour had passed, some other man began to insist, saying, “Certainly this man also was with Him, (IN)for he, too, is a Galilean.” 60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about!” And immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61 And then (IO)the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, (IP)Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.” 62 And he went out and wept bitterly.

63 (IQ)The men who were holding [eg]Jesus in custody began mocking Him and beating Him, 64 and they blindfolded Him and repeatedly asked Him, saying, “(IR)Prophesy, who is the one who hit You?” 65 And they were saying many other things against Him, (IS)blaspheming.

Jesus before the Sanhedrin

66 (IT)When it was day, (IU)the [eh]Council of elders of the people assembled, both chief priests and scribes, and they led Him away to their (IV)council chamber, saying, 67 (IW)If You are the [ei]Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe; 68 and if I ask a question, you will not answer. 69 (IX)But from now on (IY)the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” 70 And they all said, “So You are (IZ)the Son of God?” And He said to them, (JA)You say correctly that I am.” 71 And then they said, “What further need do we have of testimony? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth!”

Jesus before Pilate

23 Then the entire assembly of them set out and (JB)brought Him before Pilate. (JC)And they began to bring charges against Him, saying, “We found this man (JD)misleading our nation and (JE)forbidding us to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is [ej]Christ, a King.” Now Pilate asked Him, saying, “So You are the King of the Jews?” And He answered him and said, (JF)It is as you say.” But Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “(JG)I find no grounds for charges in the case of this man.” But they kept on insisting, saying, “He is stirring up the people, teaching all over Judea, (JH)starting from Galilee, as far as this place!”

Now when Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. And when he learned that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to (JI)Herod, [ek]since he also was in Jerusalem [el]at this time.

Jesus before Herod

Now Herod was overjoyed when he saw Jesus; for (JJ)he had wanted to see Him for a long time, because he had been hearing about Him and was hoping to see some [em]sign performed by Him. And he questioned Him [en]at some length; but (JK)He offered him no answer at all. 10 Now the chief priests and the scribes stood there, vehemently charging Him. 11 And Herod, together with his soldiers, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, (JL)dressing Him in a brightly shining robe, and sent Him back to Pilate. 12 And so (JM)Herod and Pilate became friends with one another that very day; for previously, they had been enemies toward each other.

Pilate Seeks Jesus’ Release

13 Now Pilate summoned to himself the chief priests, the [eo](JN)rulers, and the people, 14 and he said to them, “You brought this man to me on the ground that (JO)he is inciting the people to revolt; and behold, after examining Him before you, I (JP)have found no basis at all in the case of this man for the charges which you are bringing against Him. 15 No, nor has (JQ)Herod, for he sent Him back to us; and behold, nothing deserving death has been done by Him. 16 Therefore I will [ep](JR)punish Him and release Him.” 17 [[eq]Now he was obligated to release to them at the feast one prisoner.]

18 But they cried out all together, saying, “(JS)Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas!” 19 (He was one who had been thrown into prison for a revolt that took place in the city, and for murder.) 20 But Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, addressed them again, 21 but they kept on crying out, saying, “Crucify, crucify Him!” 22 And he said to them a third time, “Why, what has this man done wrong? I have found [er]in His case no grounds for a sentence of death; therefore I will [es](JT)punish Him and release Him.” 23 But they were insistent, with loud voices, demanding that He be crucified. And their voices began to prevail. 24 And so Pilate decided to have their demand carried out. 25 And he released the man for whom they were asking, who had been thrown into prison for a revolt and murder; but he handed Jesus over to their will.

Simon Carries the Cross

26 (JU)And when they led Him away, they seized a man, Simon of (JV)Cyrene, as he was coming in from the country, and placed on him the cross to carry behind Jesus.

27 Now following Him was a large crowd of the people, and of women who were [et](JW)mourning and grieving for Him. 28 But Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, stop weeping for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For behold, days are coming when they will say, ‘(JX)Blessed are those who cannot bear, and the wombs that have not given birth, and the breasts that have not nursed.’ 30 Then they will begin to (JY)say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ 31 For if they do these things [eu]when the tree is green, what will happen [ev]when it is dry?”

32 (JZ)Now two others, who were criminals, were also being led away to be put to death with Him.

The Crucifixion

33 (KA)And when they came to the place called [ew]The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left. 34 [[ex]But Jesus was saying, (KB)Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”] (KC)And they cast lots, dividing His garments among themselves. 35 And the people stood by, watching. And even the (KD)rulers were sneering at Him, saying, “He saved others; (KE)let Him save Himself if this is the [ey]Christ of God, His Chosen One.” 36 The soldiers also ridiculed Him, coming up to Him, (KF)offering Him sour wine, 37 and saying, “(KG)If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!” 38 Now there was also an inscription above Him, “(KH)THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

39 (KI)One of the criminals who were hanged there was [ez]hurling abuse at Him, saying, “Are You not the [fa]Christ? (KJ)Save Yourself and us!” 40 But the other responded, and rebuking him, said, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving [fb]what we deserve for our crimes; but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom!” 43 And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you will be with Me in (KK)Paradise.”

44 (KL)It was now about [fc](KM)the sixth hour, and darkness came over the entire land until [fd]the ninth hour, 45 [fe]because the sun stopped shining; and (KN)the veil of the temple was torn [ff]in two. 46 And Jesus, (KO)crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, (KP)into Your hands I entrust My spirit.” And having said this, He [fg]died. 47 (KQ)Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he began (KR)praising God, saying, “This man was in fact [fh]innocent.” 48 And all the crowds who came together for this spectacle, after watching what had happened, began to return home, [fi](KS)beating their chests. 49 (KT)And all His acquaintances and (KU)the women who accompanied Him from Galilee were standing at a distance, seeing these things.

Jesus Is Buried

50 (KV)And a man named Joseph, who was a (KW)member of the Council, a good and righteous man 51 (he had not consented to their plan and action), a man from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who was (KX)waiting for the kingdom of God— 52 this man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53 And he took it down and wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid Him in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever lain. 54 It was a [fj](KY)preparation day, and a Sabbath was about to [fk]begin. 55 Now (KZ)the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed, and they saw the tomb and how His body was laid. 56 And then they returned and (LA)prepared spices and perfumes.

And (LB)on the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.

The Resurrection

24 (LC)But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of (LD)the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, (LE)two men suddenly (LF)stood near them in gleaming clothing; and as [fl]the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why are you seeking the living One among the dead? He is not here, but He (LG)has [fm]risen. Remember how He spoke to you (LH)while He was still in Galilee, saying that (LI)the Son of Man must be handed over to sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise from the dead.” And (LJ)they remembered His words, and returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven, and to all the rest. 10 Now these women were (LK)Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James; also the other women with them were telling these things to (LL)the apostles. 11 But these words appeared [fn]to them as nonsense, and they (LM)would not believe [fo]the women. 12 Nevertheless, Peter got up and (LN)ran to the tomb; and when he stooped and looked in, he *saw the linen wrappings [fp]only; and he went away (LO)to his [fq]home, marveling at what had happened.

The Road to Emmaus

13 And behold, on that very day (LP)two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, which was [fr]sixty stadia from Jerusalem. 14 And they were talking with each other about all these things which had taken place. 15 While they were talking and discussing, Jesus Himself approached and began traveling with them. 16 But (LQ)their eyes were kept from recognizing Him. 17 And He said to them, “What are these words that you are exchanging with one another as you are walking?” And they came to a stop, looking sad. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, answered and said to Him, “Are You possibly the only one living near Jerusalem [fs]who does not know about the things that happened here in these days?” 19 And He said to them, “What sort of things?” And they said to Him, “Those about (LR)Jesus the Nazarene, who proved to be a (LS)prophet mighty in deed and word in the sight of God and all the people, 20 and how the chief priests and our (LT)rulers handed Him over to be sentenced to death, and crucified Him. 21 But we [ft]were hoping that it was He who was going to (LU)redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. 22 But also some women among us left us bewildered. (LV)When they were at the tomb early in the morning, 23 and did not find His body, they came, saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said that He was alive. 24 And so some of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found it just exactly as the women also had said; but Him they did not see.” 25 And then He said to them, [fu]You foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that (LW)the prophets have spoken! 26 (LX)Was it not necessary for the [fv]Christ to suffer these things and to come into His glory?” 27 Then beginning [fw]with (LY)Moses and [fx]with all the (LZ)Prophets, He explained to them the things written about Himself in all the Scriptures.

28 And they approached the village where they were going, and (MA)He gave the impression that He was going farther. 29 And so they strongly urged Him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is getting toward evening, and the day [fy]is now nearly over.” So He went in to stay with them. 30 And it came about, when He had reclined at the table with them, that He took the bread and (MB)blessed it, and He broke it and began giving it to them. 31 And then their (MC)eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from [fz]their sight. 32 They said to one another, “[ga]Were our hearts not burning within us when He was speaking to us on the road, while He (MD)was [gb]explaining the Scriptures to us?” 33 And they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and (ME)found the eleven gathered together and (MF)those who were with them, 34 saying, “(MG)The Lord has really risen and (MH)has appeared to Simon!” 35 They began to relate [gc]their experiences on the road, and how (MI)He was recognized by them at the breaking of the bread.

Other Appearances

36 Now while they were telling these things, (MJ)Jesus Himself suddenly stood in their midst and *said to them, “Peace be to you.” 37 But they were startled and frightened, and thought that they were looking at (MK)a spirit. 38 And He said to them, “Why are you frightened, and why are doubts arising in your [gd]hearts? 39 (ML)See My hands and My feet, that [ge]it is I Myself; (MM)touch Me and see, because a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you plainly see that I have.” 40 And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. 41 While they still [gf](MN)could not believe it because of their joy and astonishment, He said to them, (MO)Have you anything here to eat?” 42 They served Him a piece of broiled fish; 43 and He took it and (MP)ate it in front of them.

44 Now He said to them, (MQ)These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all the things that are written about Me in the (MR)Law of Moses and the Prophets and (MS)the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then He (MT)opened their [gg]minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and He said to them, (MU)So it is written, that the [gh]Christ would suffer and (MV)rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and that (MW)repentance [gi]for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed [gj]in His name to (MX)all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are (MY)witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, (MZ)I am sending the promise of My Father upon you; but (NA)you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”

The Ascension

50 And He led them out as far as (NB)Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. 51 While He was blessing them, He parted from them and was carried up into heaven. 52 And they, after worshiping Him, returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple [gk]praising God.

Sin, Faith, Duty

17 Jesus said to his disciples: “Things that cause people to stumble(A) are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come.(B) It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to cause one of these little ones(C) to stumble.(D) So watch yourselves.

“If your brother or sister[a] sins against you, rebuke them;(E) and if they repent, forgive them.(F) Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.”(G)

The apostles(H) said to the Lord,(I) “Increase our faith!”

He replied, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed,(J) you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.(K)

“Suppose one of you has a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Will he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, ‘Come along now and sit down to eat’? Won’t he rather say, ‘Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me(L) while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink’? Will he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do? 10 So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’”(M)

Jesus Heals Ten Men With Leprosy

11 Now on his way to Jerusalem,(N) Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee.(O) 12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy[b](P) met him. They stood at a distance(Q) 13 and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master,(R) have pity on us!”

14 When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.”(S) And as they went, they were cleansed.

15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God(T) in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.(U)

17 Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19 Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”(V)

The Coming of the Kingdom of God(W)

20 Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come,(X) Jesus replied, “The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, 21 nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’(Y) because the kingdom of God is in your midst.”[c]

22 Then he said to his disciples, “The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man,(Z) but you will not see it.(AA) 23 People will tell you, ‘There he is!’ or ‘Here he is!’ Do not go running off after them.(AB) 24 For the Son of Man in his day[d] will be like the lightning,(AC) which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other. 25 But first he must suffer many things(AD) and be rejected(AE) by this generation.(AF)

26 “Just as it was in the days of Noah,(AG) so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. 27 People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.

28 “It was the same in the days of Lot.(AH) People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. 29 But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.

30 “It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed.(AI) 31 On that day no one who is on the housetop, with possessions inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything.(AJ) 32 Remember Lot’s wife!(AK) 33 Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it.(AL) 34 I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left. 35 Two women will be grinding grain together; one will be taken and the other left.”(AM) [36] [e]

37 “Where, Lord?” they asked.

He replied, “Where there is a dead body, there the vultures will gather.”(AN)

The Parable of the Persistent Widow

18 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.(AO) He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice(AP) against my adversary.’

“For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’”(AQ)

And the Lord(AR) said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out(AS) to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man(AT) comes,(AU) will he find faith on the earth?”

The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector

To some who were confident of their own righteousness(AV) and looked down on everyone else,(AW) Jesus told this parable: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray,(AX) one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself(AY) and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast(AZ) twice a week and give a tenth(BA) of all I get.’

13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast(BB) and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’(BC)

14 “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”(BD)

The Little Children and Jesus(BE)

15 People were also bringing babies to Jesus for him to place his hands on them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 17 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child(BF) will never enter it.”

The Rich and the Kingdom of God(BG)

18 A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”(BH)

19 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’[f](BI)

21 “All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said.

22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor,(BJ) and you will have treasure in heaven.(BK) Then come, follow me.”

23 When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy. 24 Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!(BL) 25 Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

26 Those who heard this asked, “Who then can be saved?”

27 Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”(BM)

28 Peter said to him, “We have left all we had to follow you!”(BN)

29 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to them, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God 30 will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come(BO) eternal life.”(BP)

Jesus Predicts His Death a Third Time(BQ)

31 Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, “We are going up to Jerusalem,(BR) and everything that is written by the prophets(BS) about the Son of Man(BT) will be fulfilled. 32 He will be delivered over to the Gentiles.(BU) They will mock him, insult him and spit on him; 33 they will flog him(BV) and kill him.(BW) On the third day(BX) he will rise again.”(BY)

34 The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what he was talking about.(BZ)

A Blind Beggar Receives His Sight(CA)

35 As Jesus approached Jericho,(CB) a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36 When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. 37 They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.”(CC)

38 He called out, “Jesus, Son of David,(CD) have mercy(CE) on me!”

39 Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”(CF)

40 Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, 41 “What do you want me to do for you?”

“Lord, I want to see,” he replied.

42 Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.”(CG) 43 Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.(CH)

Zacchaeus the Tax Collector

19 Jesus entered Jericho(CI) and was passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig(CJ) tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.(CK)

When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.

All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”(CL)

But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord,(CM) “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything,(CN) I will pay back four times the amount.”(CO)

Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.(CP) 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”(CQ)

The Parable of the Ten Minas(CR)

11 While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God(CS) was going to appear at once.(CT) 12 He said: “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. 13 So he called ten of his servants(CU) and gave them ten minas.[g] ‘Put this money to work,’ he said, ‘until I come back.’

14 “But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We don’t want this man to be our king.’

15 “He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it.

16 “The first one came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned ten more.’

17 “‘Well done, my good servant!’(CV) his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’(CW)

18 “The second came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned five more.’

19 “His master answered, ‘You take charge of five cities.’

20 “Then another servant came and said, ‘Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. 21 I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.’(CX)

22 “His master replied, ‘I will judge you by your own words,(CY) you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow?(CZ) 23 Why then didn’t you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?’

24 “Then he said to those standing by, ‘Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’

25 “‘Sir,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’

26 “He replied, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away.(DA) 27 But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and kill them in front of me.’”

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(DB)(DC)

28 After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.(DD) 29 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany(DE) at the hill called the Mount of Olives,(DF) he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 30 “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”

32 Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them.(DG) 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”

34 They replied, “The Lord needs it.”

35 They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks(DH) on the road.

37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives,(DI) the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:

38 “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!”[h](DJ)

“Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”(DK)

39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”(DL)

40 “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”(DM)

41 As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it(DN) 42 and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. 43 The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.(DO) 44 They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls.(DP) They will not leave one stone on another,(DQ) because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming(DR) to you.”

Jesus at the Temple(DS)

45 When Jesus entered the temple courts, he began to drive out those who were selling. 46 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be a house of prayer’[i];(DT) but you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’[j](DU)

47 Every day he was teaching at the temple.(DV) But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him.(DW) 48 Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words.

The Authority of Jesus Questioned(DX)

20 One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts(DY) and proclaiming the good news,(DZ) the chief priests and the teachers of the law, together with the elders, came up to him. “Tell us by what authority you are doing these things,” they said. “Who gave you this authority?”(EA)

He replied, “I will also ask you a question. Tell me: John’s baptism(EB)—was it from heaven, or of human origin?”

They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Why didn’t you believe him?’ But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ all the people(EC) will stone us, because they are persuaded that John was a prophet.”(ED)

So they answered, “We don’t know where it was from.”

Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”

The Parable of the Tenants(EE)

He went on to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard,(EF) rented it to some farmers and went away for a long time.(EG) 10 At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants so they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 He sent another servant, but that one also they beat and treated shamefully and sent away empty-handed. 12 He sent still a third, and they wounded him and threw him out.

13 “Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love;(EH) perhaps they will respect him.’

14 “But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over. ‘This is the heir,’ they said. ‘Let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ 15 So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

“What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and kill those tenants(EI) and give the vineyard to others.”

When the people heard this, they said, “God forbid!”

17 Jesus looked directly at them and asked, “Then what is the meaning of that which is written:

“‘The stone the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone’[k]?(EJ)

18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.”(EK)

19 The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him(EL) immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.(EM)

Paying Taxes to Caesar(EN)

20 Keeping a close watch on him, they sent spies, who pretended to be sincere. They hoped to catch Jesus in something he said,(EO) so that they might hand him over to the power and authority of the governor.(EP) 21 So the spies questioned him: “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.(EQ) 22 Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”

23 He saw through their duplicity and said to them, 24 “Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?”

“Caesar’s,” they replied.

25 He said to them, “Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s,(ER) and to God what is God’s.”

26 They were unable to trap him in what he had said there in public. And astonished by his answer, they became silent.

The Resurrection and Marriage(ES)

27 Some of the Sadducees,(ET) who say there is no resurrection,(EU) came to Jesus with a question. 28 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.(EV) 29 Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a woman and died childless. 30 The second 31 and then the third married her, and in the same way the seven died, leaving no children. 32 Finally, the woman died too. 33 Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?”

34 Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. 35 But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come(EW) and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, 36 and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children,(EX) since they are children of the resurrection. 37 But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’[l](EY) 38 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.”

39 Some of the teachers of the law responded, “Well said, teacher!” 40 And no one dared to ask him any more questions.(EZ)

Whose Son Is the Messiah?(FA)

41 Then Jesus said to them, “Why is it said that the Messiah is the son of David?(FB) 42 David himself declares in the Book of Psalms:

“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
    “Sit at my right hand
43 until I make your enemies
    a footstool for your feet.”’[m](FC)

44 David calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”

Warning Against the Teachers of the Law

45 While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples, 46 “Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.(FD) 47 They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”

The Widow’s Offering(FE)

21 As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury.(FF) He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”(FG)

The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times(FH)(FI)

Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, “As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another;(FJ) every one of them will be thrown down.”

“Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?”

He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them.(FK) When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.”

10 Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.(FL) 11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.(FM)

12 “But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. 13 And so you will bear testimony to me.(FN) 14 But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves.(FO) 15 For I will give you(FP) words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. 16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends,(FQ) and they will put some of you to death. 17 Everyone will hate you because of me.(FR) 18 But not a hair of your head will perish.(FS) 19 Stand firm, and you will win life.(FT)

20 “When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies,(FU) you will know that its desolation is near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city.(FV) 22 For this is the time of punishment(FW) in fulfillment(FX) of all that has been written. 23 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. 24 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled(FY) on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

25 “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.(FZ) 26 People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.(GA) 27 At that time they will see the Son of Man(GB) coming in a cloud(GC) with power and great glory. 28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”(GD)

29 He told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees. 30 When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. 31 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God(GE) is near.

32 “Truly I tell you, this generation(GF) will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.(GG)

34 “Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life,(GH) and that day will close on you suddenly(GI) like a trap. 35 For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth. 36 Be always on the watch, and pray(GJ) that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”

37 Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple,(GK) and each evening he went out(GL) to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives,(GM) 38 and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple.(GN)

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus(GO)

22 Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching,(GP) and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus,(GQ) for they were afraid of the people. Then Satan(GR) entered Judas, called Iscariot,(GS) one of the Twelve. And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard(GT) and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. They were delighted and agreed to give him money.(GU) He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.

The Last Supper(GV)(GW)(GX)(GY)(GZ)

Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.(HA) Jesus sent Peter and John,(HB) saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.”

“Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked.

10 He replied, “As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, 11 and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.”

13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them.(HC) So they prepared the Passover.

14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles(HD) reclined at the table.(HE) 15 And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.(HF) 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”(HG)

17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it,(HH) and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”

20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant(HI) in my blood, which is poured out for you.[n] 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table.(HJ) 22 The Son of Man(HK) will go as it has been decreed.(HL) But woe to that man who betrays him!” 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.

24 A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest.(HM) 25 Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest,(HN) and the one who rules like the one who serves.(HO) 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.(HP) 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. 29 And I confer on you a kingdom,(HQ) just as my Father conferred one on me, 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom(HR) and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.(HS)

31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked(HT) to sift all of you as wheat.(HU) 32 But I have prayed for you,(HV) Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”(HW)

33 But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.”(HX)

34 Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”

35 Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals,(HY) did you lack anything?”

“Nothing,” they answered.

36 He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 37 It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’[o];(HZ) and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.”

(A)In the beginning was (B)the Word, and the Word was (C)with God, and (D)the Word was God. [a]He was in the beginning with God. (E)All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him [b]not even one thing came into being that has come into being. (F)In Him was life, and the life was (G)the Light of mankind. And (H)the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not [c]grasp it.

The Witness John the Baptist

A man [d]came, one sent from God, and his name was (I)John. [e]He came [f](J)as a witness, to testify about the Light, (K)so that all might believe through him. [g](L)He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.

[h]This was (M)the true Light [i]that, coming into the world, enlightens every person. 10 He was in the world, and (N)the world came into being through Him, and yet the world did not [j]know Him. 11 He came to His [k]own, and His own people did not [l]accept Him. 12 But [m]as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become (O)children of God, (P)to those who [n]believe in His name, 13 (Q)who were [o]born, not of [p]blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of a man, but of God.

The Word Made Flesh

14 And (R)the Word (S)became flesh, and (T)dwelt among us; and (U)we saw His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of (V)grace and (W)truth. 15 John *(X)testified about Him and called out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘(Y)He who is coming after me has proved to be [q]my superior, (Z)because He existed before me.’” 16 For of His (AA)fullness [r]we have all received, and [s]grace upon grace. 17 For (AB)the Law was given through Moses; (AC)grace and (AD)truth [t]were realized through Jesus Christ. 18 (AE)No one has seen God at any time; (AF)God the only Son, who is (AG)in the [u]arms of the Father, (AH)He has [v]explained Him.

The Testimony of John the Baptist

19 This is (AI)the testimony of John, when (AJ)the Jews sent priests and Levites to him (AK)from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 And he confessed and did not deny; and this is what he confessed: “(AL)I am not the [w]Christ.” 21 And so they asked him, “What then? Are you (AM)Elijah?” And he *said, “I am not.” “Are you (AN)the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 Then they said to him, “Who are you? Tell us, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said, “I am (AO)the voice of one calling [x]out in the wilderness, ‘Make the way of the Lord straight,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”

24 And the messengers had been sent from the Pharisees. 25 They asked him, and said to him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the [y]Christ, nor Elijah, nor (AP)the Prophet?” 26 John answered them, saying, “(AQ)I baptize [z]in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know. 27 It is (AR)He who comes after me, of whom I am not worthy even to untie the (AS)strap of His sandal.” 28 These things took place in Bethany (AT)beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing people.

29 The next day he *saw Jesus coming to him, and *said, “Behold, (AU)the Lamb of God who (AV)takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is He in behalf of whom I said, ‘(AW)After me is coming a Man who has proved to be [aa]my superior, (AX)because He existed before me.’ 31 And I did not recognize [ab]Him, but so that He would be revealed to Israel, I came baptizing [ac]in water.” 32 And John (AY)testified, saying, “(AZ)I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him. 33 And I did not recognize [ad]Him, but He who sent me to baptize [ae]in water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, (BA)this is the One who baptizes [af]in the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I myself have seen, and have testified that this is (BB)the [ag]Son of God.”

Jesus’ Public Ministry; First Converts

35 Again (BC)the next day John was standing [ah]with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and *said, “Behold, (BD)the Lamb of God!” 37 And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 And Jesus turned and saw them following, and *said to them, “What are you seeking?” They said to Him, “(BE)Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?” 39 He *said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they came and saw where He was staying, and they stayed with Him that day; it was about the [ai]tenth hour. 40 (BF)One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first *found his own brother Simon and *said to him, “We have found the (BG)Messiah” (which translated means [aj]Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of [ak](BH)John; you shall be called (BI)Cephas” (which is translated [al](BJ)Peter).

43 (BK)The next day He [am]decided to go to (BL)Galilee, and He *found (BM)Philip. And Jesus *said to him, (BN)Follow Me.” 44 Now (BO)Philip was from (BP)Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 (BQ)Philip *found (BR)Nathanael and *said to him, “We have found Him of whom (BS)Moses wrote in the Law, and (BT)the prophets also wrote: Jesus (BU)the son of Joseph, from (BV)Nazareth!” 46 Nathanael said to him, “(BW)Can anything good be from Nazareth?” (BX)Philip *said to him, “Come and see.” 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and *said of him, “Here is truly an (BY)Israelite, in whom there is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael *said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before (BZ)Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael answered Him, “(CA)Rabbi, You are (CB)the Son of God; You are the (CC)King of Israel!” 50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And He *said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see (CD)heaven opened and (CE)the angels of God ascending and descending on (CF)the Son of Man.”

Miracle at Cana

On (CG)the third day there was a wedding in (CH)Cana of Galilee, and the (CI)mother of Jesus was there; and both Jesus and His (CJ)disciples were invited to the wedding. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus *said to Him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus *said to her, [an](CK)What business do you have with Me, (CL)woman? (CM)My hour has not yet come.” His (CN)mother *said to the servants, “Whatever He tells you, do it.” Now there were six stone waterpots standing there (CO)for the Jewish custom of purification, containing [ao]two or three measures each. Jesus *said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” So they filled them up to the brim. And He *said to them, “Draw some out now and take it to the [ap]headwaiter.” And they took it to him. Now when the headwaiter tasted the water (CP)which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter *called the groom, 10 and *said to him, “Every man serves the good wine first, and when the guests (CQ)are drunk, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 This beginning of His [aq](CR)signs Jesus did in Cana of (CS)Galilee, and revealed His (CT)glory; and His disciples believed in Him.

12 After this He went down to (CU)Capernaum, He and His (CV)mother, and His (CW)brothers and His (CX)disciples; and they stayed there a few days.

First Passover—Cleansing the Temple

13 (CY)The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus (CZ)went up to Jerusalem. 14 (DA)And within the temple grounds He found those who were selling oxen, sheep, and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. 15 And He made a whip of [ar]cords, and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables; 16 and to those who were selling (DB)the doves He said, “Take these things away from here; stop making (DC)My Father’s house a [as]place of business!” 17 His (DD)disciples remembered that it was written: “(DE)Zeal for Your house will consume me.” 18 (DF)The Jews then said to Him, “(DG)What sign do You show us [at]as your authority for doing these things?” 19 Jesus answered them, (DH)Destroy this [au]temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 (DI)The Jews then said, “It took (DJ)forty-six years to build this [av]temple, and yet You will raise it up in three days?” 21 But He was speaking about (DK)the [aw]temple of His body. 22 So when He was raised from the dead, His (DL)disciples (DM)remembered that He said this; and they believed (DN)the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.

23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at (DO)the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name as they (DP)observed His signs which He was doing. 24 But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, because (DQ)He knew all people, 25 and because He did not need anyone to testify about mankind, (DR)for He Himself knew what was in mankind.

The New Birth

Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named (DS)Nicodemus, a (DT)ruler of the Jews; this man came to [ax]Jesus at night and said to Him, “(DU)Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these [ay](DV)signs that You do unless (DW)God is with him.” Jesus responded and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone (DX)is born [az]again he cannot see (DY)the kingdom of God.”

Nicodemus *said to Him, “How can a person be born when he is old? He cannot enter his mother’s womb a second time and be born, can he?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone is born of (DZ)water and the Spirit, he cannot enter (EA)the kingdom of God. (EB)That which has been born of the flesh is flesh, and that which has been born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born [ba]again.’ (EC)The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it is coming from and where it is going; so is everyone who has been born of the Spirit.”

Nicodemus responded and said to Him, “How can these things be?” 10 Jesus answered and said to him, “You are (ED)the teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? 11 Truly, truly, I say to you, (EE)we speak of what we know and (EF)testify of what we have seen, and (EG)you people do not accept our testimony. 12 If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 (EH)No one has ascended into heaven, except (EI)He who descended from heaven: (EJ)the Son of Man. 14 And just as (EK)Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must (EL)the Son of Man (EM)be lifted up, 15 so that everyone who [bb]believes will (EN)have eternal life in Him.

16 “For God so (EO)loved the world, that He (EP)gave His (EQ)only Son, so that everyone who (ER)believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life. 17 For God (ES)did not send the Son into the world (ET)to judge the world, but so that the world might be saved through Him. 18 (EU)The one who believes in Him is not judged; the one who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of (EV)the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment, that (EW)the Light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the Light; for (EX)their deeds were evil. 20 (EY)For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light, so that his deeds will not be exposed. 21 But the one who (EZ)practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds will be revealed [bc]as having been performed in God.”

John the Baptist’s Last Testimony

22 After these things Jesus and His (FA)disciples came into the land of Judea; and there He was spending time with them and (FB)baptizing. 23 Now John also was baptizing in Aenon, near Salim, because there was an abundance of water there; and people were coming and being baptized— 24 for (FC)John had not yet been thrown into prison.

25 Then a matter of dispute developed on the part of John’s disciples with a Jew about [bd](FD)purification. 26 And they came to John and said to him, “(FE)Rabbi, He who was with you (FF)beyond the Jordan, to whom you (FG)have testified—behold, He is baptizing and all the people are coming to Him.” 27 John replied, “(FH)A person can receive not even one thing unless it (FI)has been given to him from heaven. 28 You yourselves [be]are my witnesses that I said, ‘(FJ)I am not the [bf]Christ,’ but, ‘I have been sent ahead of Him.’ 29 He who has the bride is (FK)the groom; but the friend of the groom, who stands and listens to him, rejoices greatly because of the groom’s voice. So this (FL)joy of mine has been made full. 30 He must [bg]increase, but I must [bh]decrease.

31 (FM)He who comes from above is above all; (FN)the one who is only from the earth is of the earth and speaks of the earth. (FO)He who comes from heaven is above all.
