Christ teaches his disciples to avoid occasions of evil, to forgive one another, steadfastly to trust in God, and that no one should presume in his own works. He heals the ten lepers, and speaks of the latter days, and of the end of the world.

17 Then Jesus said to his disciples, It cannot be avoided but that offences will come. Nevertheless, woe be to him through whom they come. It would be better for him that a millstone were hung about his neck and that he were cast into the sea, than that he should hurt one of these little ones.

Take heed to yourselves. If your brother trespasses against you, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And even if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turns again to you saying, I am sorry – forgive him.

And the apostles said to the Lord, Increase our faith. And the Lord said, If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, and were to say to this sycamine tree, Pluck yourself up by the roots and plant yourself in the sea, it would obey you.

Who among you, if he had a servant plowing or feeding sheep, would say to him when he came in from the field, Go quickly, and sit down to food? And not rather say to him, Prepare for me to sup, and gird yourself up, and serve me till I have eaten and drunk, and afterward you shall eat and drink? Does he thank that servant because he did that which was commanded of him? I think not. 10 So likewise you, when you have done all the things that are commanded of you, say, We are unprofitable servants; we have done that which was our duty to do.

11 And it so was that, as he journeyed to Jerusalem, he passed through Samaria and Galilee. 12 And as he entered into a certain town, there met him ten men that were lepers, who stood afar off, 13 and put forth their voices and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!

14 When he saw them, he said to them, Go and show yourselves to the priests. And it came to pass that as they went, they were cleansed. 15 And one of them, when he saw that he was cleansed, turned back again and with a loud voice praised God, 16 and fell down on his face at Jesus’ feet, and gave him thanks. And he was a Samaritan.

17 And Jesus answered and said, Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the other nine? 18 There are not found any that returned again to give God praise, save only this stranger. 19 And he said to the man, Arise and go your way; your faith has made you whole.

20 When he was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God does not come with watching for it. 21 Neither may men say, See here, look there! For behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

22 And he said to the disciples, The days will come when you will desire to see one day of the Son of man, and you will not see it. 23 And they will say to you, See here, see there! Do not go after them or follow them. 24 For as the lightning that appears out of the one part of the heaven and shines to the other part of heaven, so shall the Son of man be in his days. 25 But first he must suffer many things, and be refused by this nation.

26 As it happened in the time of Noah, so shall it be in the time of the Son of man: 27 they ate, they drank, they married wives, and were married, right up to the same day that Noah went into the ark; and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 Likewise also as it happened in the days of Lot: they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built. 29 And even the same day that Lot went out of Sodom, it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. 30 After these examples shall it be in the day when the Son of man appears.

31 At that day, let him who is on the housetop, with his stuff in the house, not come down to take it out. And likewise, let not him who is in the fields turn back again to what he left behind. 32 Remember Lot’s wife. 33 Whosoever would go about to save his life, shall lose it, and whosoever will lose his life, shall save it. 34 I tell you, in that night there will be two in one bed; the one will be received, and the other will be left. 35 Two will also be a-grinding together; the one will be received, and the other left.

37 And they answered and said to him, Where, Lord? And he said to them, Wherever the body is, there will the eagles resort.

Sin, Faith, Duty

17 Jesus said to his disciples: “Things that cause people to stumble(A) are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come.(B) It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to cause one of these little ones(C) to stumble.(D) So watch yourselves.

“If your brother or sister[a] sins against you, rebuke them;(E) and if they repent, forgive them.(F) Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.”(G)

The apostles(H) said to the Lord,(I) “Increase our faith!”

He replied, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed,(J) you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.(K)

“Suppose one of you has a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Will he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, ‘Come along now and sit down to eat’? Won’t he rather say, ‘Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me(L) while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink’? Will he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do? 10 So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’”(M)

Jesus Heals Ten Men With Leprosy

11 Now on his way to Jerusalem,(N) Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee.(O) 12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy[b](P) met him. They stood at a distance(Q) 13 and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master,(R) have pity on us!”

14 When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.”(S) And as they went, they were cleansed.

15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God(T) in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.(U)

17 Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19 Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”(V)

The Coming of the Kingdom of God(W)

20 Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come,(X) Jesus replied, “The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, 21 nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’(Y) because the kingdom of God is in your midst.”[c]

22 Then he said to his disciples, “The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man,(Z) but you will not see it.(AA) 23 People will tell you, ‘There he is!’ or ‘Here he is!’ Do not go running off after them.(AB) 24 For the Son of Man in his day[d] will be like the lightning,(AC) which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other. 25 But first he must suffer many things(AD) and be rejected(AE) by this generation.(AF)

26 “Just as it was in the days of Noah,(AG) so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. 27 People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.

28 “It was the same in the days of Lot.(AH) People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. 29 But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.

30 “It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed.(AI) 31 On that day no one who is on the housetop, with possessions inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything.(AJ) 32 Remember Lot’s wife!(AK) 33 Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it.(AL) 34 I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left. 35 Two women will be grinding grain together; one will be taken and the other left.”(AM) [36] [e]

37 “Where, Lord?” they asked.

He replied, “Where there is a dead body, there the vultures will gather.”(AN)
