Woes to the Pharisees and Lawyers

37 While Jesus[a] was speaking, (A)a Pharisee asked him to dine with him, so he went in and reclined at table. 38 The Pharisee was astonished to see (B)that he did not first wash before dinner. 39 And the Lord said to him, (C)“Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of (D)greed and wickedness. 40 (E)You fools! (F)Did not he who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But (G)give as alms those things that are within, and behold, (H)everything is clean for you.

42 (I)“But woe to you Pharisees! For (J)you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect (K)justice and (L)the love of God. (M)These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 43 Woe to you Pharisees! For (N)you love the best seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. 44 Woe to you! (O)For you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without knowing it.”

45 One of (P)the lawyers answered him, “Teacher, in saying these things you insult us also.” 46 And he said, “Woe to you (Q)lawyers also! For (R)you load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 (S)Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed. 48 (T)So you are witnesses and you (U)consent to the deeds of (V)your fathers, for they killed them, and you build their tombs. 49 Therefore also (W)the Wisdom of God said, (X)‘I will send them (Y)prophets and apostles, (Z)some of whom they will (AA)kill and persecute,’ 50 so that (AB)the blood of all the prophets, shed (AC)from the foundation of the world, may be (AD)charged against this generation, 51 from the blood of (AE)Abel to the blood of (AF)Zechariah, who perished between (AG)the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be (AH)required of this generation. 52 Woe to you (AI)lawyers! (AJ)For you have taken away the key of (AK)knowledge. You (AL)did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering.”

53 As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to provoke him to speak about many things, 54 (AM)lying in wait for him, (AN)to catch him in something he might say.

Beware of the Leaven of the Pharisees

12 In the meantime, (AO)when so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, (AP)“Beware of (AQ)the leaven of the Pharisees, (AR)which is hypocrisy. (AS)Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in (AT)private rooms shall be proclaimed on (AU)the housetops.

Have No Fear

“I tell you, my friends, (AV)do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him (AW)who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell.[b] Yes, I tell you, fear him! Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies?[c] And (AX)not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, (AY)even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; (AZ)you are of more value than many sparrows.

Acknowledge Christ Before Men

“And I tell you, (BA)everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge (BB)before the angels of God, but (BC)the one who denies me before men (BD)will be denied (BE)before the angels of God. 10 And (BF)everyone who speaks a word (BG)against the Son of Man (BH)will be forgiven, but the one who (BI)blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. 11 (BJ)And when they (BK)bring you before the synagogues and (BL)the rulers and (BM)the authorities, (BN)do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say, 12 (BO)for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”

The Parable of the Rich Fool

13 (BP)Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” 14 But he said to him, (BQ)“Man, (BR)who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?” 15 And he said to them, (BS)“Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” 16 And he told them a parable, saying, (BT)“The land of a rich man produced plentifully, 17 and he thought to himself, (BU)‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my (BV)barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up (BW)for many years; relax, (BX)eat, drink, be merry.”’ 20 But God said to him, (BY)‘Fool! (BZ)This night (CA)your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, (CB)whose will they be?’ 21 So is the one (CC)who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

Do Not Be Anxious

22 And he said to his disciples, (CD)“Therefore I tell you, (CE)do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. 24 (CF)Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. (CG)Of how much more value are you than the birds! 25 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his (CH)span of life?[d] 26 If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest? 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin,[e] yet I tell you, (CI)even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 28 But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, (CJ)O you of little faith! 29 And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor (CK)be worried. 30 For (CL)all the nations of the world seek after these things, and (CM)your Father knows that you need them. 31 Instead, (CN)seek (CO)his[f] kingdom, (CP)and these things will be added to you.

32 (CQ)“Fear not, little (CR)flock, for (CS)it is your Father's good pleasure to give you (CT)the kingdom. 33 (CU)Sell your possessions, and (CV)give to the needy. (CW)Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with (CX)a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. 34 (CY)For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

You Must Be Ready

35 (CZ)“Stay dressed for action[g] and (DA)keep your lamps burning, 36 and be like men who are (DB)waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and (DC)knocks. 37 (DD)Blessed are those servants[h] whom the master finds (DE)awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, (DF)he will dress himself for service and (DG)have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them. 38 If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants! 39 (DH)But know this, that if the master of the house had known at what hour (DI)the thief was coming, he[i] would not have left his house to be broken into. 40 You also must be (DJ)ready, for (DK)the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”

41 Peter said, “Lord, (DL)are you telling this parable for us or for all?” 42 And the Lord said, “Who then is (DM)the faithful and (DN)wise (DO)manager, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? 43 (DP)Blessed is that servant[j] whom his master will find so doing when he comes. 44 Truly, I say to you, (DQ)he will set him over all his possessions. 45 But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master (DR)is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and (DS)get drunk, 46 the master of that servant will come (DT)on a day when he does not expect him and (DU)at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces and put him with the unfaithful. 47 (DV)And that servant who (DW)knew his master's will but (DX)did not get ready (DY)or act according to his will, will receive a (DZ)severe beating. 48 (EA)But the one who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, (EB)will receive a light beating. (EC)Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more.

Not Peace, but Division

49 (ED)“I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled! 50 (EE)I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how (EF)great is my distress until it is accomplished! 51 (EG)Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? (EH)No, I tell you, but rather division. 52 For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, (EI)father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

Interpreting the Time

54 He also said to the crowds, (EJ)“When you see (EK)a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, ‘A shower is coming.’ And so it happens. 55 And (EL)when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be (EM)scorching heat,’ and it happens. 56 You hypocrites! (EN)You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?

Settle with Your Accuser

57 “And why (EO)do you not judge (EP)for yourselves what is right? 58 (EQ)As you go with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer put you in prison. 59 I tell you, (ER)you will never get out until you have paid the very last (ES)penny.”[k]

Repent or Perish

13 There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood (ET)Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And he answered them, (EU)“Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? No, I tell you; but unless you (EV)repent, you will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen on whom the tower in (EW)Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you (EX)repent, you will all likewise perish.”

The Parable of the Barren Fig Tree

And he told this parable: “A man had (EY)a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. And he said to the vinedresser, ‘Look, for three years now I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. (EZ)Cut it down. Why should it use up the ground?’ And he answered him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and put on manure. Then if it should bear fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’”

Woes on the Pharisees and the Experts in the Law

37 When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him; so he went in and reclined at the table.(A) 38 But the Pharisee was surprised when he noticed that Jesus did not first wash before the meal.(B)

39 Then the Lord(C) said to him, “Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.(D) 40 You foolish people!(E) Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But now as for what is inside you—be generous to the poor,(F) and everything will be clean for you.(G)

42 “Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth(H) of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God.(I) You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.(J)

43 “Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and respectful greetings in the marketplaces.(K)

44 “Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves,(L) which people walk over without knowing it.”

45 One of the experts in the law(M) answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.”

46 Jesus replied, “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.(N)

47 “Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed them. 48 So you testify that you approve of what your ancestors did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs.(O) 49 Because of this, God in his wisdom(P) said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.’(Q) 50 Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, 51 from the blood of Abel(R) to the blood of Zechariah,(S) who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.(T)

52 “Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.”(U)

53 When Jesus went outside, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions, 54 waiting to catch him in something he might say.(V)

Warnings and Encouragements(W)

12 Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: “Be[a] on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.(X) There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.(Y) What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.

“I tell you, my friends,(Z) do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.(AA) Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered.(AB) Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.(AC)

“I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God.(AD) But whoever disowns me before others will be disowned(AE) before the angels of God. 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man(AF) will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.(AG)

11 “When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say,(AH) 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.”(AI)

The Parable of the Rich Fool

13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

14 Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” 15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”(AJ)

16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’

18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’

20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool!(AK) This very night your life will be demanded from you.(AL) Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’(AM)

21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”(AN)

Do Not Worry(AO)

22 Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. 24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them.(AP) And how much more valuable you are than birds! 25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life[b]? 26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?

27 “Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor(AQ) was dressed like one of these. 28 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith!(AR) 29 And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. 30 For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father(AS) knows that you need them.(AT) 31 But seek his kingdom,(AU) and these things will be given to you as well.(AV)

32 “Do not be afraid,(AW) little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.(AX) 33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor.(AY) Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven(AZ) that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.(BA) 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.(BB)

Watchfulness(BC)(BD)

35 “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, 36 like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. 37 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes.(BE) Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.(BF) 38 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward daybreak. 39 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief(BG) was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. 40 You also must be ready,(BH) because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”

41 Peter asked, “Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?”

42 The Lord(BI) answered, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time? 43 It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns. 44 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 45 But suppose the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,’ and he then begins to beat the other servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk. 46 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of.(BJ) He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.

47 “The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows.(BK) 48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows.(BL) From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.

Not Peace but Division(BM)

49 “I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 But I have a baptism(BN) to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed!(BO) 51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. 52 From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”(BP)

Interpreting the Times

54 He said to the crowd: “When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, ‘It’s going to rain,’ and it does.(BQ) 55 And when the south wind blows, you say, ‘It’s going to be hot,’ and it is. 56 Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time?(BR)

57 “Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right? 58 As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled on the way, or your adversary may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.(BS) 59 I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.”(BT)

Repent or Perish

13 Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate(BU) had mixed with their sacrifices. Jesus answered, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way?(BV) I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam(BW) fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? I tell you, no! But unless you repent,(BX) you too will all perish.”

Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any.(BY) So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down!(BZ) Why should it use up the soil?’

“‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.’”
