The Light in You

33 (A)“No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. 34 Your eye is (B)the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is (C)bad, your body is full of darkness. 35 (D)Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness. 36 If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, (E)as when a lamp with its rays gives you light.”

Woes to the Pharisees and Lawyers

37 While Jesus[a] was speaking, (F)a Pharisee asked him to dine with him, so he went in and reclined at table. 38 The Pharisee was astonished to see (G)that he did not first wash before dinner. 39 And the Lord said to him, (H)“Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of (I)greed and wickedness. 40 (J)You fools! (K)Did not he who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But (L)give as alms those things that are within, and behold, (M)everything is clean for you.

42 (N)“But woe to you Pharisees! For (O)you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect (P)justice and (Q)the love of God. (R)These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 43 Woe to you Pharisees! For (S)you love the best seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. 44 Woe to you! (T)For you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without knowing it.”

45 One of (U)the lawyers answered him, “Teacher, in saying these things you insult us also.” 46 And he said, “Woe to you (V)lawyers also! For (W)you load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 (X)Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed. 48 (Y)So you are witnesses and you (Z)consent to the deeds of (AA)your fathers, for they killed them, and you build their tombs. 49 Therefore also (AB)the Wisdom of God said, (AC)‘I will send them (AD)prophets and apostles, (AE)some of whom they will (AF)kill and persecute,’ 50 so that (AG)the blood of all the prophets, shed (AH)from the foundation of the world, may be (AI)charged against this generation, 51 from the blood of (AJ)Abel to the blood of (AK)Zechariah, who perished between (AL)the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be (AM)required of this generation. 52 Woe to you (AN)lawyers! (AO)For you have taken away the key of (AP)knowledge. You (AQ)did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering.”

53 As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to provoke him to speak about many things, 54 (AR)lying in wait for him, (AS)to catch him in something he might say.

Beware of the Leaven of the Pharisees

12 In the meantime, (AT)when so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, (AU)“Beware of (AV)the leaven of the Pharisees, (AW)which is hypocrisy. (AX)Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in (AY)private rooms shall be proclaimed on (AZ)the housetops.

Have No Fear

“I tell you, my friends, (BA)do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him (BB)who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell.[b] Yes, I tell you, fear him! Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies?[c] And (BC)not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, (BD)even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; (BE)you are of more value than many sparrows.

Acknowledge Christ Before Men

“And I tell you, (BF)everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge (BG)before the angels of God, but (BH)the one who denies me before men (BI)will be denied (BJ)before the angels of God. 10 And (BK)everyone who speaks a word (BL)against the Son of Man (BM)will be forgiven, but the one who (BN)blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. 11 (BO)And when they (BP)bring you before the synagogues and (BQ)the rulers and (BR)the authorities, (BS)do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say, 12 (BT)for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”

The Lamp of the Body(A)

33 “No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light.(B) 34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy,[a] your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy,[b] your body also is full of darkness. 35 See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. 36 Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.”

Woes on the Pharisees and the Experts in the Law

37 When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him; so he went in and reclined at the table.(C) 38 But the Pharisee was surprised when he noticed that Jesus did not first wash before the meal.(D)

39 Then the Lord(E) said to him, “Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.(F) 40 You foolish people!(G) Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But now as for what is inside you—be generous to the poor,(H) and everything will be clean for you.(I)

42 “Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth(J) of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God.(K) You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.(L)

43 “Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and respectful greetings in the marketplaces.(M)

44 “Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves,(N) which people walk over without knowing it.”

45 One of the experts in the law(O) answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.”

46 Jesus replied, “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.(P)

47 “Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed them. 48 So you testify that you approve of what your ancestors did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs.(Q) 49 Because of this, God in his wisdom(R) said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.’(S) 50 Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, 51 from the blood of Abel(T) to the blood of Zechariah,(U) who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.(V)

52 “Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.”(W)

53 When Jesus went outside, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions, 54 waiting to catch him in something he might say.(X)

Warnings and Encouragements(Y)

12 Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: “Be[c] on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.(Z) There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.(AA) What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.

“I tell you, my friends,(AB) do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.(AC) Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered.(AD) Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.(AE)

“I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God.(AF) But whoever disowns me before others will be disowned(AG) before the angels of God. 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man(AH) will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.(AI)

11 “When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say,(AJ) 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.”(AK)
