¹³ If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

³⁷ On the last and greatest day of the festival,^(A) Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.^{(B) 38} Whoever believes^(C) in me, as Scripture has said,^(D) rivers of living water^(E) will flow from within them.”^{[a](F) 39} By this he meant the Spirit,^(G) whom those who believed in him were later to receive.^(H) Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.^(I)

¹⁶ And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate^(A) to help you and be with you forever— ¹⁷ the Spirit of truth.^(B) The world cannot accept him,^(C) because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be^[a] in you.

⁷ But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate^(A) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.^{(B) 8} When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: ⁹ about sin,^(C) because people do not believe in me; ¹⁰ about righteousness,^(D) because I am going to the Father,^(E) where you can see me no longer; ¹¹ and about judgment, because the prince of this world^(F) now stands condemned.

¹² “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.^{(G) 13} But when he, the Spirit of truth,^(H) comes, he will guide you into all the truth.^(I) He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. ¹⁴ He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you.

³⁹ The promise is for you and your children^(A) and for all who are far off^(B)—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

⁴⁰ With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.”^{(C) 41} Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number^(D) that day.

The Fellowship of the Believers

⁴² They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching^(E) and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread^(F) and to prayer.^{(G) 43} Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.^{(H) 44} All the believers were together and had everything in common.^{(I) 45} They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.^{(J) 46} Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts.^(K) They broke bread^(L) in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, ⁴⁷ praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.^(M) And the Lord added to their number^(N) daily those who were being saved.
