Luke 1-4

Introduction

1 Since many have undertaken to compile an account of the things [a](A)accomplished among us, 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who (B)from the beginning [b]were (C)eyewitnesses and [c](D)servants of (E)the [d]word, 3 it seemed fitting to me as well, (F)having [e]investigated everything carefully from the beginning, to write it out for you (G)in an orderly sequence, (H)most excellent (I)Theophilus; 4 so that you may know the exact truth about the [f]things you have been [g](J)taught.

John the Baptist’s Birth Foretold

5 (K)In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the (L)division of [h]Abijah; and he had a wife [i]from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6 They were both (M)righteous in the sight of God, walking (N)blamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord. 7 And yet they had no child, because Elizabeth was infertile, and they were both advanced in [j]years.

8 Now it happened that while (O)he was performing his priestly service before God in the appointed order of his division, 9 according to the custom of the priestly office, he was chosen by lot (P)to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10 And the whole multitude of the people were in prayer (Q)outside at the hour of the incense offering. 11 Now (R)an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing to the right of the altar of incense. 12 Zechariah was troubled when he saw the angel, and (S)fear [k]gripped him. 13 But the angel said to him, “(T)Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and (U)you shall [l]name him John. 14 You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice over his birth. 15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; and he will (V)drink no wine or liquor, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit [m]while still in his mother’s womb. 16 And he will (W)turn many of the sons of Israel back to the Lord their God. 17 And it is he who will (X)go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of (Y)Elijah, (Z)to turn the hearts of fathers back to their children, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, to (AA)make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

18 Zechariah said to the angel, “How will I know this? For (AB)I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in her [n]years.” 19 The angel answered and said to him, “I am (AC)Gabriel, who [o](AD)stands in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. 20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day when these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled at their proper time.”

21 And meanwhile the people were waiting for Zechariah, and were wondering at his delay in the temple. 22 But when he came out, he was unable to speak to them; and they realized that he had seen a vision in the temple, and he repeatedly (AE)[p]made signs to them, and remained speechless. 23 When the days of his priestly service were concluded, he went back home.

24 Now after these days his wife Elizabeth became pregnant, and she kept herself [q]in seclusion for five months, saying, 25 “This is the way the Lord has dealt with me in the days when He looked with favor upon me, to (AF)take away my disgrace among people.”

Jesus’ Birth Foretold

26 Now in the sixth month the angel (AG)Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee named (AH)Nazareth, 27 to (AI)a virgin [r]betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, (AJ)of the [s]descendants of David; and the virgin’s name was [t]Mary. 28 And coming in, he said to her, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord [u]is with you.” 29 But she (AK)was very perplexed at this statement, and was pondering what kind of greeting this was. 30 And the angel said to her, “(AL)Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and you (AM)shall name Him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of (AN)the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him (AO)the throne of His father David; 33 (AP)and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, (AQ)and His kingdom will have no end.” 34 But Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I [v]am a virgin?” 35 The angel answered and said to her, “(AR)The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of (AS)the Most High will overshadow you; for that reason also (AT)the [w]holy Child will be called (AU)the Son of God. 36 And behold, even your relative Elizabeth herself has conceived a son in her old age, and [x]she who was called infertile is now in her sixth month. 37 For (AV)nothing will be impossible with God.” 38 And Mary said, “Behold, the Lord’s bond-servant; may it be done to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

Mary Visits Elizabeth

39 Now [y]at this time Mary set out and went in a hurry to (AW)the hill country, to a city of Judah, 40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was (AX)filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 And she cried out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 And [z]how has it happened to me that the mother of (AY)my Lord would come to me? 44 For behold, when the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy. 45 And (AZ)blessed is she who [aa]believed that there would be a fulfillment of what had been spoken to her [ab]by the Lord.”

Mary’s Song: The Magnificat

46 And Mary said:

“(BA)My soul [ac](BB)exalts the Lord,
47 And (BC)my spirit has rejoiced in (BD)God my Savior.
48 For (BE)He has had regard for the humble state of His bond-servant;
For behold, from now on all generations will [ad]call me (BF)blessed.
49 For the Mighty One has done great things for me;
And holy is His name.
50 (BG)And His mercy is to generation [ae]after generation
Toward those who fear Him.
51 (BH)He has done [af]mighty deeds with His arm;
He has scattered those who were proud in the [ag]thoughts of their hearts.
52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones,
And has (BI)exalted those who were humble.
53 (BJ)He has filled the hungry with good things,
And sent the rich away empty-handed.
54 He has given help to His servant Israel,
[ah]In remembrance of His mercy,
55 (BK)Just as He spoke to our fathers,
(BL)To Abraham and his [ai]descendants forever.”

56 Mary stayed with her about three months, and then returned to her home.

John the Baptist Is Born

57 Now the time [aj]had come for Elizabeth to give birth, and she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbors and her relatives heard that the Lord had [ak](BM)displayed His great mercy toward her; and they were rejoicing with her.

59 And it happened that on (BN)the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to call him Zechariah, [al]after his father. 60 And yet his mother responded and said, “No indeed; but (BO)he shall be called John.” 61 And they said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.” 62 And they [am](BP)made signs to his father, as to what he wanted him called. 63 And he asked for a tablet and wrote [an]as follows, “(BQ)His name is John.” And they were all amazed. 64 (BR)And at once his mouth was opened and his tongue freed, and he began speaking in praise of God. 65 And fear came on all those who lived around them; and all these matters were being talked about in (BS)the entire hill country of Judea. 66 All who heard them kept them in mind, saying, “What then will this child turn out to be?” For indeed (BT)the hand of the Lord was with him.

Zechariah’s Prophecy

67 And his father Zechariah (BU)was filled with the Holy Spirit and (BV)prophesied, saying:

68 “(BW)Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,
For He has visited us and accomplished (BX)redemption for His people,
69 And has raised up a (BY)horn of salvation for us
In the house of (BZ)His servant David—
70 (CA)Just as He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets (CB)from ancient times—
71 [ao](CC)Salvation (CD)from our enemies,
And from the hand of all who hate us;
72 (CE)To show mercy to our fathers,
(CF)And to remember His holy covenant,
73 (CG)The oath which He swore to our father Abraham,
74 To grant us that we, being rescued from the hand of our enemies,
Would serve Him without fear,
75 (CH)In holiness and righteousness before Him all our days.
76 And you, child, also will be called the (CI)prophet of (CJ)the Most High;
For you will go on (CK)before the Lord to (CL)prepare His ways;
77 To give His people the knowledge of salvation
[ap]By (CM)the forgiveness of their sins,
78 Because of the tender mercy of our God,
With which (CN)the Sunrise from on high will visit us,
79 (CO)To shine on those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death,
To guide our feet into the (CP)way of peace.”

80 (CQ)Now the child grew and was becoming strong in spirit, and he lived in the deserts until the day of his public appearance to Israel.

Jesus’ Birth in Bethlehem

2 Now in those days a decree went out from (CR)Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of (CS)all [aq]the inhabited earth. 2 [ar]This was the first census taken while [as]Quirinius was governor of (CT)Syria. 3 And all the people were on their way to register for the census, each to his own city. 4 Now Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because (CU)he was of the house and family of David, 5 in order to register along with Mary, who was [at]betrothed to him, and was pregnant. 6 While they were there, the [au]time came for her to give birth. 7 And she (CV)gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a [av]manger, because there was no [aw]room for them in the inn.

8 In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock at night. 9 And (CW)an angel of the Lord suddenly (CX)stood near them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. 10 And so the angel said to them, “(CY)Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; 11 for today in the city of David there has been born for you a (CZ)Savior, who is [ax](DA)Christ (DB)the Lord. 12 And (DC)this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a [ay]manger.” 13 And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly [az]army of angels praising God and saying,

14 “(DD)Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace among people [ba](DE)with whom He is pleased.”

15 When the angels had departed from them into heaven, the shepherds began saying to one another, “Let’s go straight to Bethlehem, then, and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they came in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He lay in the [bb]manger. 17 When they had seen Him, they made known the statement which had been told them about this Child. 18 And all who heard it were amazed about the things which were told them by the shepherds. 19 But Mary (DF)treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds went back, (DG)glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as had been told them.

Jesus Presented at the Temple

21 And when (DH)eight days were completed [bc]so that it was time for His circumcision, (DI)He was also named Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.

22 (DJ)And when the days for [bd]their purification according to the Law of Moses were completed, they brought Him up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord: “(DK)Every firstborn male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”), 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what has been stated in the Law of the Lord: “(DL)A pair of turtledoves or two young doves.”

25 And there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was (DM)righteous and devout, (DN)looking forward to the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And (DO)it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not (DP)see death before he had seen the Lord’s [be]Christ. 27 And he came [bf]by the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, [bg](DQ)to carry out for Him the custom of the Law, 28 then he took Him in his arms, and blessed God, and said,

29 “Now, Lord, You are letting Your bond-servant depart in peace,
(DR)According to Your word;
30 For my eyes have (DS)seen Your salvation,
31 Which You have prepared in the presence of all the peoples:
32 (DT)A light for revelation [bh]for the Gentiles,
And the glory of Your people Israel.”

33 And His father and (DU)mother were amazed at the things which were being said about Him. 34 And Simeon blessed them and said to (DV)His mother Mary, “Behold, this Child is appointed for (DW)the fall and [bi]rise of many in Israel, and as a sign to be [bj]opposed— 35 and a sword will pierce your own soul—to the end that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”

36 And there was a (DX)prophetess, [bk]Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of (DY)the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in [bl]years (DZ)and had lived with her husband for seven years after her [bm]marriage, 37 and then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She did not leave the temple grounds, serving night and day with (EA)fasts and prayers. 38 And at that very [bn]moment she came up and began giving thanks to God, and continued to speak about Him to all those who were (EB)looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.

Return to Nazareth

39 And when His parents had completed everything in accordance with the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to (EC)their own city of Nazareth. 40 (ED)Now the Child continued to grow and to become strong, [bo]increasing in wisdom; and the favor of God was upon Him.

Visit to Jerusalem

41 His parents went to Jerusalem every year at (EE)the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when He was twelve years old, they went up there according to the custom of the feast; 43 and as they were returning, after spending the (EF)full number of days required, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but His parents were unaware of it. 44 Instead, they thought that He was somewhere in the caravan, and they went a day’s journey; and then they began looking for Him among their relatives and acquaintances. 45 And when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, looking for Him. 46 Then, after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard Him (EG)were amazed at His understanding and His answers. 48 When Joseph and Mary saw Him, they were bewildered; and (EH)His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You treated us this way? Behold, (EI)Your father and I have been anxiously looking for You!” 49 And He said to them, “Why is it that you were looking for Me? Did you not know that (EJ)I had to be in My Father’s [bp]house?” 50 And yet (EK)they on their part did not understand the statement which He had [bq]made to them. 51 And He went down with them and came to (EL)Nazareth, and He continued to be subject to them; and (EM)His mother (EN)treasured all these [br]things in her heart.

52 And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and [bs]stature, and in (EO)favor with God and people.

John the Baptist Preaches

3 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when (EP)Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and (EQ)Herod was tetrarch of Galilee and his brother Philip was tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene, 2 in the high priesthood of (ER)Annas and (ES)Caiaphas, (ET)the word of God came to John, the son of Zechariah, in the wilderness. 3 And he came into all (EU)the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance [bt]for the forgiveness of sins; 4 as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:

“(EV)The voice of one calling [bu]out in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
Make His paths straight!
5 (EW)Every ravine will be filled,
And every mountain and hill will be lowered;
The crooked will become straight,
And the rough roads smooth;
6 (EX)And all [bv]flesh will (EY)see the salvation of God!’”

7 So he was saying to the crowds who were going out to be baptized by him, “(EZ)You [bw]offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Therefore produce fruits that are consistent with repentance, and (FA)do not start saying [bx]to yourselves, ‘(FB)We have Abraham as our father,’ for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children for Abraham. 9 But indeed the axe is already being laid at the root of the trees; so (FC)every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

10 And the crowds were questioning him, saying, “(FD)Then what are we to do?” 11 And he would answer and say to them, “The one who has two [by]tunics is to (FE)share with the one who has none; and the one who has food is to do likewise.” 12 Now even (FF)tax collectors came to be baptized, and they said to him, “Teacher, what are we to do?” 13 And he said to them, “[bz]Collect no more than what you have been ordered to.” 14 And soldiers also were questioning him, saying, “What are we to do, we as well?” And he said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone, nor [ca](FG)harass anyone, and (FH)be content with your wages.”

15 Now while the people were in a state of expectation and they all were thinking carefully in their hearts about John, (FI)whether he himself perhaps was the [cb]Christ, 16 (FJ)John responded to them all, saying, “As for me, I baptize you with water; but He is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the straps of His sandals; He will baptize you [cc]with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His (FK)winnowing fork is in His hand to thoroughly clear His threshing floor, and to gather the wheat into His barn; but He will burn up the chaff with (FL)unquenchable fire.”

18 So with many other exhortations he preached the gospel to the people. 19 But when (FM)Herod the tetrarch was reprimanded by him regarding (FN)Herodias, his brother’s wife, and regarding all the evil things which (FO)Herod had done, 20 Herod also added this to them all: (FP)he locked John up in prison.

Jesus Is Baptized

21 (FQ)Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized, and while He was (FR)praying, heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came from heaven: “(FS)You are My beloved Son, in You I am well pleased.”

Genealogy of Jesus

The Temptation of Jesus

4 (FZ)Now Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, (GA)returned from the Jordan and was led around [co]by the Spirit in the wilderness 2 for (GB)forty days, being tempted by the devil. And He ate nothing during those days, and when they had ended, He was hungry. 3 And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” 4 And Jesus answered him, “It is written: ‘(GC)Man shall not live on bread alone.’”

5 (GD)And he led Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms of [cp](GE)the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said to Him, “I will give You all this domain and [cq]its glory, (GF)for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I want. 7 Therefore if You [cr]worship before me, it shall all be Yours.” 8 Jesus replied to him, “It is written: ‘(GG)You shall worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’”

9 (GH)And he brought Him into Jerusalem and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here; 10 for it is written:

‘(GI)He will give His angels orders concerning You, to protect You,’

11 and,

‘(GJ)On their hands they will lift You up,
So that You do not strike Your foot against a stone.’”

12 And Jesus answered and said to him, “It has been stated, ‘(GK)You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

13 And so when the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time.

Jesus’ Public Ministry

14 And (GL)Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and (GM)news about Him spread through all the surrounding region. 15 And He began (GN)teaching in their synagogues and was praised by all.

16 And He came to (GO)Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, (GP)He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and (GQ)stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to Him. And He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:

18 “(GR)The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He anointed Me to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent Me to proclaim release to captives,
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set free those who are oppressed,
19 (GS)To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.”

20 And He (GT)rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and (GU)sat down; and the eyes of all the people in the synagogue were intently directed at Him. 21 Now He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your [cs]hearing.” 22 And all the people were [ct]speaking well of Him, and admiring the [cu]gracious words which were coming from His [cv]lips; and yet they were saying, “(GV)Is this not Joseph’s son?” 23 And He said to them, “No doubt you will [cw]quote this proverb to Me: ‘Physician, heal yourself! All the miracles that we heard were done (GW)in Capernaum, do here in (GX)your hometown as well.’” 24 But He said, “Truly I say to you, (GY)no prophet is welcome in his hometown. 25 But I say to you in truth, there were many widows in Israel (GZ)in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, when a [cx]severe famine came over all the land; 26 and yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to [cy](HA)Zarephath, in the land of (HB)Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And there were many with leprosy in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; and none of them was [cz]cleansed, but only (HC)Naaman the Syrian.” 28 And all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage as they heard these things; 29 and they got up and (HD)drove Him out of the city, and brought Him to the [da]crest of the hill on which their city had been built, so that they could throw Him down from the cliff. 30 But He (HE)passed through their midst and went on His way.

31 And (HF)He came down to (HG)Capernaum, a city of Galilee; and He was teaching them on the Sabbath; 32 and (HH)they were amazed at His teaching, because (HI)His [db]message was delivered with authority. 33 In the synagogue there was a man [dc]possessed by the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, 34 “Leave us alone! [dd](HJ)What business do You have with us, Jesus [de]of (HK)Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—(HL)the Holy One of God!” 35 But Jesus (HM)rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in the midst of the people, it came out of him without doing him any harm. 36 And amazement came upon them all, and they began talking with one another, saying, “What is [df]this message? For (HN)with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” 37 And (HO)the news about Him was spreading into every locality of the surrounding region.

Many Are Healed

38 (HP)Then He got up and left the synagogue, and entered Simon’s home. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was (HQ)suffering from a high fever, and they asked Him [dg]to help her. 39 And standing over her, He (HR)rebuked the fever, and it left her; and she immediately got up and served them.

40 (HS)Now while (HT)the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and He was (HU)laying His hands on each one of them and (HV)healing them. 41 Demons also were coming out of many, shouting, “You are (HW)the Son of God!” And yet He was (HX)rebuking them and would (HY)not allow them to speak, because they knew that He was the [dh]Christ.

42 (HZ)Now when day came, Jesus left and went to a secluded place; and the crowds were searching for Him, and they came to Him and tried to keep Him from leaving them. 43 But He said to them, “I must also preach the kingdom of God to the other cities, (IA)because I was sent for this purpose.”

44 So He kept on preaching in the synagogues (IB)of [di]Judea.

1 Inasmuch as many have taken in hand to set in order a narrative of those (A)things which [a]have been fulfilled among us, 2 just as those who (B)from the beginning were (C)eyewitnesses and ministers of the word (D)delivered them to us, 3 it seemed good to me also, having [b]had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write to you an orderly account, (E)most excellent Theophilus, 4 (F)that you may know the certainty of those things in which you were instructed.

John’s Birth Announced to Zacharias

5 There was (G)in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, (H)of the division of (I)Abijah. His (J)wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. 7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well advanced in years.

8 So it was, that while he was serving as priest before God in the order of his division, 9 according to the custom of the priesthood, [c]his lot fell (K)to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord. 10 (L)And the whole multitude of the people was praying outside at the hour of incense. 11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of (M)the altar of incense. 12 And when Zacharias saw him, (N)he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and (O)you shall call his name John. 14 And you will have joy and gladness, and (P)many will rejoice at his birth. 15 For he will be (Q)great in the sight of the Lord, and (R)shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. 19 And the angel answered and said to him, “I am (V)Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and was sent to speak to you and bring you [d]these glad (W)tidings. 20 But behold, (X)you will be mute and not able to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words which will be fulfilled in their own time.”

21 And the people waited for Zacharias, and marveled that he lingered so long in the temple. 22 But when he came out, he could not speak to them; and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple, for he beckoned to them and remained speechless.

23 So it was, as soon as (Y)the days of his service were completed, that he departed to his own house. 24 Now after those days his wife Elizabeth conceived; and she hid herself five months, saying, 25 “Thus the Lord has dealt with me, in the days when He looked on me, to (Z)take away my reproach among people.”

Christ’s Birth Announced to Mary

26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin (AA)betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And having come in, the angel said to her, (AB)“Rejoice, highly favored one, (AC)the Lord is with you; [e]blessed are you among women!”

29 But [f]when she saw him, (AD)she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. 30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found (AE)favor with God. 31 (AF)And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and (AG)shall call His name Jesus. 32 He will be great, (AH)and will be called the Son of the Highest; and (AI)the Lord God will give Him the (AJ)throne of His (AK)father David. 33 (AL)And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”

34 Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I [g]do not know a man?”

35 And the angel answered and said to her, (AM)“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called (AN)the Son of God. 36 Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. 37 For (AO)with God nothing will be impossible.”

38 Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

Mary Visits Elizabeth

39 Now Mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste, (AP)to a city of Judah, 40 and entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth. 41 And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was (AQ)filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 Then she spoke out with a loud voice and said, (AR)“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 But why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For indeed, as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. 45 (AS)Blessed is she who [h]believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord.”

The Song of Mary

46 And Mary said:

For behold, henceforth (AX)all generations will call me blessed.

Birth of John the Baptist

57 Now Elizabeth’s full time came for her to be delivered, and she brought forth a son. 58 When her neighbors and relatives heard how the Lord had shown great mercy to her, they (BK)rejoiced with her.

Circumcision of John the Baptist

59 So it was, (BL)on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him by the name of his father, Zacharias. 60 His mother answered and said, (BM)“No; he shall be called John.”

61 But they said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.” 62 So they made signs to his father—what he would have him called.

63 And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, “His name is John.” So they all marveled. 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, praising God. 65 Then fear came on all who dwelt around them; and all these sayings were discussed throughout all the hill country of Judea. 66 And all those who heard them (BN)kept them in their hearts, saying, “What kind of child will this be?” And (BO)the hand of the Lord was with him.

Zacharias’ Prophecy

67 Now his father Zacharias (BP)was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying:

68 “Blessed(BQ) is the Lord God of Israel,
For (BR)He has visited and redeemed His people,
69 (BS)And has raised up a horn of salvation for us
In the house of His servant David,
70 (BT)As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets,
Who have been (BU)since the world began,
71 That we should be saved from our enemies
And from the hand of all who hate us,
72 (BV)To perform the mercy promised to our fathers
And to remember His holy covenant,
73 (BW)The oath which He swore to our father Abraham:
74 To grant us that we,
Being delivered from the hand of our enemies,
Might (BX)serve Him without fear,
75 (BY)In holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life.

76 “And you, child, will be called the (BZ)prophet of the Highest;

Christ Born of Mary(CG)

2 And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 (CH)This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. 3 So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city.

4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to (CI)the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, (CJ)because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, (CK)his betrothed [l]wife, who was with child. 6 So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. 7 And (CL)she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a [m]manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

Glory in the Highest

8 Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And [n]behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, (CM)and they were greatly afraid. 10 Then the angel said to them, (CN)“Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy (CO)which will be to all people. 11 (CP)For there is born to you this day in the city of David (CQ)a Savior, (CR)who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a [o]manger.”

15 So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. 17 Now when they had seen Him, they made [q]widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. 18 And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds. 19 (CW)But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and (CX)praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them.

Circumcision of Jesus

21 (CY)And when eight days were completed [r]for the circumcision of the Child, His name was called (CZ)Jesus, the name given by the angel (DA)before He was conceived in the womb.

Jesus Presented in the Temple

22 Now when (DB)the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were completed, they brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord 23 (DC)(as it is written in the law of the Lord, (DD)“Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”), 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, (DE)“A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”

Simeon Sees God’s Salvation

25 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, (DF)waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not (DG)see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 So he came (DH)by the Spirit into the temple. And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the law, 28 he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said:

29 “Lord, (DI)now You are letting Your servant depart in peace,
According to Your word;
30 For my eyes (DJ)have seen Your salvation
31 Which You have prepared before the face of all peoples,
32 (DK)A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles,
And the glory of Your people Israel.”

33 [s]And Joseph and His mother marveled at those things which were spoken of Him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary His mother, “Behold, this Child is destined for the (DL)fall and rising of many in Israel, and for (DM)a sign which will be spoken against 35 (yes, (DN)a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

Anna Bears Witness to the Redeemer

36 Now there was one, Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of (DO)Asher. She was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; 37 and this woman was a widow [t]of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers (DP)night and day. 38 And coming in that instant she gave thanks to [u]the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who (DQ)looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

The Family Returns to Nazareth

39 So when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth. 40 (DR)And the Child grew and became strong [v]in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him.

The Boy Jesus Amazes the Scholars

41 His parents went to (DS)Jerusalem (DT)every year at the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the (DU)custom of the feast. 43 When they had finished the (DV)days, as they returned, the Boy Jesus lingered behind in Jerusalem. And [w]Joseph and His mother did not know it; 44 but supposing Him to have been in the company, they went a day’s journey, and sought Him among their relatives and acquaintances. 45 So when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking Him. 46 Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And (DW)all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. 48 So when they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously.”

49 And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be (DX)about (DY)My Father’s business?” 50 But (DZ)they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them.

Jesus Advances in Wisdom and Favor

51 Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was [x]subject to them, but His mother (EA)kept all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus (EB)increased in wisdom and stature, (EC)and in favor with God and men.

John the Baptist Prepares the Way(ED)

3 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, (EE)Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, 2 [y]while (EF)Annas and Caiaphas were high priests, the word of God came to (EG)John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. 3 (EH)And he went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance (EI)for the remission of sins, 4 as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying:

‘Prepare the way of the Lord;
Make His paths straight.
5 Every valley shall be filled
And every mountain and hill brought low;
The crooked places shall be made straight
And the rough ways smooth;

John Preaches to the People(EL)

7 Then he said to the multitudes that came out to be baptized by him, (EM)“Brood[z] of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Therefore bear fruits (EN)worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. 9 And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore (EO)every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

10 So the people asked him, saying, (EP)“What shall we do then?”

11 He answered and said to them, (EQ)“He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, (ER)let him do likewise.”

12 Then (ES)tax collectors also came to be baptized, and said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?”

13 And he said to them, (ET)“Collect no more than what is appointed for you.”

14 Likewise the soldiers asked him, saying, “And what shall we do?”

So he said to them, “Do not [aa]intimidate anyone (EU)or accuse falsely, and be content with your wages.”

15 Now as the people were in expectation, and all reasoned in their hearts about John, whether he was the Christ or not, 16 John answered, saying to all, (EV)“I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will (EW)baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and (EX)gather the wheat into His barn; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire.”

18 And with many other exhortations he preached to the people. 19 (EY)But Herod the tetrarch, being rebuked by him concerning Herodias, his [ab]brother Philip’s wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, 20 also added this, above all, that he shut John up in prison.

Jesus Begins His Galilean Ministry(GB)

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth(GI)

16 So He came to (GJ)Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, (GK)He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17 And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:

Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;

To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,

19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is (GN)fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 So all bore witness to Him, and (GO)marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, (GP)“Is this not Joseph’s son?”

23 He said to them, “You will surely say this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done in (GQ)Capernaum,[am] do also here in (GR)Your country.’ ” 24 Then He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, no (GS)prophet is accepted in his own country. 25 But I tell you truly, (GT)many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a great famine throughout all the land; 26 but to none of them was Elijah sent except to [an]Zarephath, in the region of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 (GU)And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.”

28 So all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were (GV)filled with [ao]wrath, 29 (GW)and rose up and thrust Him out of the city; and they led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw Him down over the cliff. 30 Then (GX)passing through the midst of them, He went His way.

Jesus Casts Out an Unclean Spirit(GY)

31 Then (GZ)He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths. 32 And they were (HA)astonished at His teaching, (HB)for His word was with authority. 33 (HC)Now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out with a loud voice, 34 saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? (HD)I know who You are—(HE)the Holy One of God!”

35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, [ap]“Be quiet, and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him in their midst, it came out of him and did not hurt him. 36 Then they were all amazed and spoke among themselves, saying, “What a word this is! For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.” 37 And the report about Him went out into every place in the surrounding region.

Israel’s History after the Exodus

1 These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel (A)across the Jordan in the wilderness, in the (B)Arabah opposite [a]Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab. 2 It is eleven days’ journey from (C)Horeb by way of Mount (D)Seir to (E)Kadesh-barnea. 3 In the (F)fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the sons of Israel, (G)in accordance with everything that the Lord had commanded him to declare to them, 4 after he had [b](H)defeated Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and (I)Og the king of Bashan, who lived in (J)Ashtaroth [c]and in Edrei. 5 Across the Jordan in the land of Moab, Moses began to explain this Law, saying,

6 “The Lord our God (K)spoke to us at Horeb, saying, ‘You have stayed long enough at this mountain. 7 Turn and set out on your journey, and go to (L)the hill country of the Amorites, and to all their neighbors in the Arabah, in the hill country, in the lowland, in (M)the [d]Negev, by the seacoast, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates. 8 See, I have placed the land before you; go in and take possession of the land which the Lord (N)swore to give to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, and their [e]descendants after them.’

9 “And I spoke to you at that time, saying, ‘(O)I am not able to endure you alone. 10 The Lord your God has (P)multiplied you, and behold, you are this day like the stars of heaven in number. 11 May the Lord, the God of your fathers increase you a thousand times more than you are, and bless you, (Q)just as He has [f]promised you! 12 How can I alone endure the burden and weight of you and your strife? 13 (R)Obtain for yourselves men who are wise, discerning, and informed from your tribes, and I will appoint them as your heads.’ 14 And you answered me and said, ‘The thing which you have said to do is good.’ 15 So I took the heads of your tribes, wise and informed men, and [g]appointed them as heads over you, commanders of thousands, [h]hundreds, [i]fifties, and [j]tens, and officers for your tribes.

16 “Then I ordered your judges at that time, saying, ‘Hear the cases between your fellow countrymen and (S)judge righteously between a person and his fellow countryman, or the stranger who is with him. 17 (T)You are not to [k]show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small and the great alike. You are (U)not to be afraid of any person, for the judgment is God’s. (V)The case that is too difficult for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it.’ 18 At that time (W)I commanded you all the things that you were to do.

19 “Then we set out from (X)Horeb, and went through all that (Y)great and terrible wilderness that you saw on the way to the (Z)hill country of the Amorites, just as the Lord our God had commanded us; and we came to (AA)Kadesh-barnea. 20 And I said to you, ‘You have come to the hill country of the Amorites, which the Lord our God is about to give us. 21 See, the Lord your God has placed the land before you; go up, take possession, just as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has spoken to you. (AB)Do not fear or be dismayed.’

22 “(AC)Then all of you approached me and said, ‘Let us send men ahead of us, so that they may spy out the land for us, and bring back to us word of the way by which we should go up, and the cities which we should enter.’ 23 The [l]plan pleased me, and I took twelve of your men, one man for each tribe. 24 Then (AD)they turned and went up into the hill country, and came to the Valley of Eshcol, and spied it out. 25 And they took some of the fruit of the land in their hands and brought it down to us. They also brought us back a report and said, ‘The land that the Lord our God is about to give us is good.’

26 “(AE)Yet you were unwilling to go up; instead you (AF)rebelled against the [m]command of the Lord your God; 27 and (AG)you grumbled in your tents and said, ‘Because the Lord hates us, He has brought us out of the land of Egypt, to hand us over to the Amorites to destroy us. 28 Where can we go up? Our brothers have made our hearts melt, by saying, “The people are bigger and taller than we; the cities are large and fortified up to heaven. And besides, we saw (AH)the sons of the Anakim there.”’ 29 But I said to you, ‘Do not be terrified, nor fear them. 30 The Lord your God, who goes before you, will (AI)Himself fight for you, [n]just as He did for you in Egypt before your eyes, 31 and in the wilderness where you saw how (AJ)the Lord your God carried you, just as a man carries his son, on all of the road which you have walked until you came to this place.’ 32 Yet [o](AK)in spite of all this, you did not trust the Lord your God, 33 (AL)who goes before you on your way, (AM)to seek out a place for you to make camp, in the fire by night to show you the way by which you should go, and in the cloud by day.

34 “Then the Lord heard the sound of your words, and He was angry and (AN)swore an oath, saying, 35 ‘(AO)Not one of these men, this evil generation, shall see the good land which I swore to give your fathers, 36 except Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and (AP)to him I will give the land on which he has set foot, and to his sons, because he has followed the Lord fully.’ 37 (AQ)The Lord was angry with me also on your account, saying, ‘(AR)Not even you shall enter there. 38 Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, (AS)shall himself enter there; encourage him, for (AT)he will give it to Israel as an inheritance. 39 Moreover, (AU)your little ones who, you said, would become plunder, and your sons, who this day have (AV)no knowledge of good and evil, shall enter there, and I will give it to them and they shall take possession of it. 40 But as for you, (AW)turn around and set out for the wilderness by the way of the [p]Red Sea.’

41 “(AX)Then you replied to me, ‘We have sinned against the Lord; we ourselves will go up and fight, just as the Lord our God commanded us.’ And every man of you strapped on his weapons of war, and you viewed it as easy to go up into the hill country. 42 (AY)But the Lord said to me, ‘Say to them, “Do not go up nor fight, for I am not among you; otherwise you will be [q]defeated [r]by your enemies.”’ 43 So I spoke to you, but you would not listen. Instead, (AZ)you rebelled against the [s]command of the Lord, and acted presumptuously and went up into the hill country. 44 (BA)And the Amorites who lived in that hill country came out against you and chased you (BB)as bees do, and they scattered you from Seir to Hormah. 45 Then you returned and wept before the Lord; but the (BC)Lord did not listen to your voice, nor pay attention to you. 46 So you remained at (BD)Kadesh for many days, [t]the days that you spent there.

Wanderings in the Wilderness

2 “(BE)Then we turned and set out for the wilderness by the way of the [u]Red Sea, as the Lord spoke to me, and we circled (BF)Mount Seir for many days. 2 And the Lord spoke to me, saying, 3 ‘You have circled this mountain long enough. Now turn north, 4 (BG)and command the people, saying, “You are going to pass through the (BH)territory of your brothers the sons of Esau, who live in Seir; and (BI)they will be afraid of you. So be very careful; 5 do not [v]provoke them, for I will not give you any of their land, not even as much as a [w]footprint, (BJ)because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession. 6 You are to buy food from them with money so that you may eat, and you shall also purchase water from them with money so that you may drink. 7 For the Lord your God has blessed you in all [x]that you have done; He has known your [y]wandering through this (BK)great wilderness. These (BL)forty years the Lord your God has been with you; you have not lacked anything.”’

8 “So we passed beyond our brothers the sons of Esau, who live in Seir, away from the (BM)Arabah road, away from Elath and (BN)Ezion-geber. And we turned and passed through by the way of the wilderness of Moab. 9 Then the Lord said to me, ‘Do not attack Moab, nor provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of [z]their land as a possession, because I have given (BO)Ar to (BP)the sons of Lot as a possession.’ 10 (The (BQ)Emim lived there previously, a people as great, numerous, and tall as the Anakim. 11 Like the Anakim, they too are regarded as (BR)Rephaim, but the Moabites call them Emim. 12 (BS)The Horites previously lived in Seir, but the sons of Esau dispossessed them and destroyed them from before [aa]them, and settled in their place; (BT)just as Israel did to the land of [ab]their possession which the Lord gave them.) 13 ‘Now arise and cross over the [ac]Wadi Zered yourselves.’ So we crossed over the [ad]Wadi Zered. 14 Now the [ae]time that it took for us to come from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed over the [af]Wadi Zered was (BU)thirty-eight years, until (BV)all the generation of the men of war perished from within the camp, just as (BW)the Lord had sworn to them. 15 (BX)Indeed, the hand of the Lord was against them, to destroy them from within the camp until they all perished.

16 “So it came about, when (BY)all the men of war had finally perished from among the people, 17 that the Lord spoke to me, saying, 18 ‘Today you shall cross over (BZ)Ar, the border of Moab. 19 When you come opposite the (CA)sons of Ammon, do not attack them nor provoke them, for I will not give you any of the land of the sons of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to (CB)the sons of Lot as a possession.’ 20 (It is also regarded as the land of the (CC)Rephaim, because the Rephaim previously lived in it, but the Ammonites call them Zamzummin, 21 a people as great, numerous, and tall as the Anakim; but the Lord destroyed them before [ag]them. And they dispossessed them and settled in their place, 22 just as He did for the sons of Esau, who (CD)live in Seir, when He destroyed (CE)the Horites from before them; they dispossessed them and settled in their place, where they remain even to this day. 23 And as for the (CF)Avvim, who lived in villages as far as Gaza, the [ah](CG)Caphtorim, who came from [ai](CH)Caphtor, destroyed them and lived in their place.) 24 ‘Arise, set out, and pass through the [aj](CI)Valley of Arnon. Look! I have handed over to you Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land; start taking possession and plunge into battle with him. 25 This day I will begin to put (CJ)the dread and fear of you upon the faces of [ak]people everywhere, [al]who, when they hear the news of you, (CK)will tremble and be in anguish because of you.’

26 “(CL)So I sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying, 27 ‘Let me pass through your land; I will [am]travel only on the road. I will not turn aside to the right or to the left. 28 You will sell me food for money so that I may eat, and give me water for money so that I may drink, (CM)only let me pass through on [an]foot, 29 just as the sons of Esau who live in Seir and the Moabites who live in (CN)Ar did for me, until I cross over the Jordan into the land that the Lord our God is giving us.’ 30 But (CO)Sihon king of Heshbon was not willing for us to pass [ao]through his land; for the (CP)Lord your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, in order to hand him over to you, as he is today. 31 And the Lord said to me, ‘See, I have begun to turn Sihon and his land over [ap]to you. Begin taking possession, so that you may possess his land.’

32 “Then Sihon came out [aq]with all his people to meet us in battle at Jahaz. 33 And (CQ)the Lord our God turned him over [ar]to us, and we [as](CR)defeated him with his sons and all his people. 34 So we captured all his cities at that time and [at](CS)utterly destroyed [au]the men, women, and children of every city. We left no survivor. 35 We took (CT)only the animals as our plunder, and the spoils of the cities which we had captured. 36 From (CU)Aroer which is on the edge of the [av]Valley of Arnon and from the city which is in the [aw]valley, even to Gilead, there was no city that was too [ax]high for us; the Lord our God turned it all over [ay]to us. 37 (CV)Only you did not go near the land of the sons of Ammon, all along the [az]river (CW)Jabbok and the cities of the hill country, and wherever the Lord our God had commanded us to avoid.

26 (AB)“Nevertheless you would not go up, but rebelled against the command of the Lord your God; 27 and you (AC)complained in your tents, and said, ‘Because the Lord (AD)hates us, He has brought us out of the land of Egypt to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us. 28 Where can we go up? Our brethren have [i]discouraged our hearts, saying, (AE)“The people are greater and taller than we; the cities are great and fortified up to heaven; moreover we have seen the sons of the (AF)Anakim there.” ’

29 “Then I said to you, ‘Do not be terrified, (AG)or afraid of them. 30 (AH)The Lord your God, who goes before you, He will fight for you, according to all He did for you in Egypt before your eyes, 31 and in the wilderness where you saw how the Lord your God carried you, as a (AI)man carries his son, in all the way that you went until you came to this place.’ 32 Yet, for all that, (AJ)you did not believe the Lord your God, 33 (AK)who went in the way before you (AL)to search out a place for you to pitch your tents, to show you the way you should go, in the fire by night and in the cloud by day.

The Penalty for Israel’s Rebellion(AM)

34 “And the Lord heard the sound of your words, and was angry, (AN)and took an oath, saying, 35 (AO)‘Surely not one of these men of this evil generation shall see that good land of which I [j]swore to give to your fathers, 36 (AP)except Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him and his children I am giving the land on which he walked, because (AQ)he [k]wholly followed the Lord.’ 37 (AR)The Lord was also angry with me for your sakes, saying, ‘Even you shall not go in there. 38 (AS)Joshua the son of Nun, (AT)who stands before you, he shall go in there. (AU)Encourage him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.

39 (AV)‘Moreover your little ones and your children, who (AW)you say will be victims, who today (AX)have no knowledge of good and evil, they shall go in there; to them I will give it, and they shall possess it. 40 (AY)But as for you, turn and take your journey into the wilderness by the Way of the Red Sea.’

41 “Then you answered and said to me, (AZ)‘We have sinned against the Lord; we will go up and fight, just as the Lord our God commanded us.’ And when everyone of you had girded on his weapons of war, you were ready to go up into the mountain.

42 “And the Lord said to me, ‘Tell them, (BA)“Do not go up nor fight, for I am not among you; lest you be defeated before your enemies.” ’ 43 So I spoke to you; yet you would not listen, but (BB)rebelled against the command of the Lord, and (BC)presumptuously[l] went up into the mountain. 44 And the Amorites who dwelt in that mountain came out against you and chased you (BD)as bees do, and drove you back from Seir to Hormah. 45 Then you returned and wept before the Lord, but the Lord would not listen to your voice nor give ear to you.

46 (BE)“So you remained in Kadesh many days, according to the days that you spent there.

The Desert Years

2 “Then we turned and (BF)journeyed into the wilderness of the Way of the Red Sea, (BG)as the Lord spoke to me, and we [m]skirted Mount Seir for many days.

2 “And the Lord spoke to me, saying: 3 ‘You have skirted this mountain (BH)long enough; turn northward. 4 And command the people, saying, (BI)“You are about to pass through the territory of (BJ)your brethren, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir; and they will be afraid of you. Therefore watch yourselves carefully. 5 Do not meddle with them, for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as one footstep, (BK)because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession. 6 You shall buy food from them with money, that you may eat; and you shall also buy water from them with money, that you may drink.

7 “For the Lord your God has blessed you in all the work of your hand. He knows your [n]trudging through this great wilderness. (BL)These forty years the Lord your God has been with you; you have lacked nothing.” ’

8 “And when we passed beyond our brethren, the descendants of Esau who dwell in Seir, away from the road of the plain, away from (BM)Elath and Ezion Geber, we (BN)turned and passed by way of the Wilderness of Moab. 9 Then the Lord said to me, ‘Do not harass Moab, nor contend with them in battle, for I will not give you any of their land as a possession, because I have given (BO)Ar to (BP)the descendants of Lot as a possession.’ ”

10 (BQ)(The Emim had dwelt there in times past, a people as great and numerous and tall as (BR)the Anakim. 11 They were also regarded as [o]giants, like the Anakim, but the Moabites call them Emim. 12 (BS)The Horites formerly dwelt in Seir, but the descendants of Esau dispossessed them and destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their [p]place, just as Israel did to the land of their possession which the Lord gave them.)

13 “ ‘Now rise and cross over (BT)the [q]Valley of the Zered.’ So we crossed over the Valley of the Zered. 14 And the time we took to come (BU)from Kadesh Barnea until we crossed over the Valley of the Zered was thirty-eight years, (BV)until all the generation of the men of war [r]was consumed from the midst of the camp, (BW)just as the Lord had sworn to them. 15 For indeed the hand of the Lord was against them, to destroy them from the midst of the camp until they [s]were consumed.

16 “So it was, when all the men of war had finally perished from among the people, 17 that the Lord spoke to me, saying: 18 ‘This day you are to cross over at Ar, the boundary of Moab. 19 And when you come near the people of Ammon, do not harass them or meddle with them, for I will not give you any of the land of the people of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to (BX)the descendants of Lot as a possession.’ ”

20 (That was also regarded as a land of [t]giants; giants formerly dwelt there. But the Ammonites call them (BY)Zamzummim, 21 (BZ)a people as great and numerous and tall as the Anakim. But the Lord destroyed them before them, and they dispossessed them and dwelt in their place, 22 just as He had done for the descendants of Esau, (CA)who dwelt in Seir, when He destroyed (CB)the Horites from before them. They dispossessed them and dwelt in their place, even to this day. 23 And (CC)the Avim, who dwelt in villages as far as Gaza—(CD)the Caphtorim, who came from Caphtor, destroyed them and dwelt in their place.)

24 “ ‘Rise, take your journey, and (CE)cross over the River Arnon. Look, I have given into your hand (CF)Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land. Begin [u]to possess it, and engage him in battle. 25 (CG)This day I will begin to put the dread and fear of you upon the nations [v]under the whole heaven, who shall hear the report of you, and shall (CH)tremble and be in anguish because of you.’

King Sihon Defeated(CI)

26 “And I (CJ)sent messengers from the Wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon, (CK)with words of peace, saying, 27 (CL)‘Let me pass through your land; I will keep strictly to the road, and I will turn neither to the right nor to the left. 28 You shall sell me food for money, that I may eat, and give me water for money, that I may drink; (CM)only let me pass through on foot, 29 (CN)just as the descendants of Esau who dwell in Seir and the Moabites who dwell in Ar did for me, until I cross the Jordan to the land which the Lord our God is giving us.’

30 (CO)“But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass through, for (CP)the Lord your God (CQ)hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that He might deliver him into your hand, as it is this day.

31 “And the Lord said to me, ‘See, I have begun to (CR)give Sihon and his land over to you. Begin to possess it, that you may inherit his land.’ 32 (CS)Then Sihon and all his people came out against us to fight at Jahaz. 33 And (CT)the Lord our God delivered him [w]over to us; so (CU)we defeated him, his sons, and all his people. 34 We took all his cities at that time, and we (CV)utterly destroyed the men, women, and little ones of every city; we left none remaining. 35 We took only the livestock as plunder for ourselves, with the spoil of the cities which we took. 36 (CW)From Aroer, which is on the bank of the River Arnon, and from (CX)the city that is in the ravine, as far as Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us; (CY)the Lord our God delivered all to us. 37 Only you did not go near the land of the people of Ammon—anywhere along the River (CZ)Jabbok, or to the cities of the mountains, or (DA)wherever the Lord our God had forbidden us.
