Christ’s Birth Announced to Mary

26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin (A)betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And having come in, the angel said to her, (B)“Rejoice, highly favored one, (C)the Lord is with you; [a]blessed are you among women!”

29 But [b]when she saw him, (D)she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. 30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found (E)favor with God. 31 (F)And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and (G)shall call His name Jesus. 32 He will be great, (H)and will be called the Son of the Highest; and (I)the Lord God will give Him the (J)throne of His (K)father David. 33 (L)And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”

34 Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I [c]do not know a man?”

35 And the angel answered and said to her, (M)The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called (N)the Son of God. 36 Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. 37 For (O)with God nothing will be impossible.”

38 Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

Mary Visits Elizabeth

39 Now Mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste, (P)to a city of Judah, 40 and entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth. 41 And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was (Q)filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 Then she spoke out with a loud voice and said, (R)“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 But why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For indeed, as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. 45 (S)Blessed is she who [d]believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord.”

The Song of Mary

46 And Mary said:

(T)“My soul [e]magnifies the Lord,
47 And my spirit has (U)rejoiced in (V)God my Savior.
48 For (W)He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant;
For behold, henceforth (X)all generations will call me blessed.
49 For He who is mighty (Y)has done great things for me,
And (Z)holy is His name.
50 And (AA)His mercy is on those who fear Him
From generation to generation.
51 (AB)He has shown strength with His arm;
(AC)He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
52 (AD)He has put down the mighty from their thrones,
And exalted the lowly.
53 He has (AE)filled the hungry with good things,
And the rich He has sent away empty.
54 He has helped His (AF)servant Israel,
(AG)In remembrance of His mercy,
55 (AH)As He spoke to our (AI)fathers,
To Abraham and to his (AJ)seed forever.”

56 And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her house.

Birth of John the Baptist

57 Now Elizabeth’s full time came for her to be delivered, and she brought forth a son. 58 When her neighbors and relatives heard how the Lord had shown great mercy to her, they (AK)rejoiced with her.

Circumcision of John the Baptist

59 So it was, (AL)on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him by the name of his father, Zacharias. 60 His mother answered and said, (AM)“No; he shall be called John.”

61 But they said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.” 62 So they made signs to his father—what he would have him called.

63 And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, “His name is John.” So they all marveled. 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, praising God. 65 Then fear came on all who dwelt around them; and all these sayings were discussed throughout all the hill country of Judea. 66 And all those who heard them (AN)kept them in their hearts, saying, “What kind of child will this be?” And (AO)the hand of the Lord was with him.

Zacharias’ Prophecy

67 Now his father Zacharias (AP)was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying:

68 “Blessed(AQ) is the Lord God of Israel,
For (AR)He has visited and redeemed His people,
69 (AS)And has raised up a horn of salvation for us
In the house of His servant David,
70 (AT)As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets,
Who have been (AU)since the world began,
71 That we should be saved from our enemies
And from the hand of all who hate us,
72 (AV)To perform the mercy promised to our fathers
And to remember His holy covenant,
73 (AW)The oath which He swore to our father Abraham:
74 To grant us that we,
Being delivered from the hand of our enemies,
Might (AX)serve Him without fear,
75 (AY)In holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life.

76 “And you, child, will be called the (AZ)prophet of the Highest;
For (BA)you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways,
77 To give (BB)knowledge of salvation to His people
By the remission of their sins,
78 Through the tender mercy of our God,
With which the [f]Dayspring from on high [g]has visited us;
79 (BC)To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death,
To (BD)guide our feet into the way of peace.”

The Birth of Jesus Foretold

26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel(A) to Nazareth,(B) a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph,(C) a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid,(D) Mary; you have found favor with God.(E) 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.(F) 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.(G) The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,(H) 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom(I) will never end.”(J)

34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you,(K) and the power of the Most High(L) will overshadow you. So the holy one(M) to be born will be called[a] the Son of God.(N) 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child(O) in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail.”(P)

38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

Mary Visits Elizabeth

39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea,(Q) 40 where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.(R) 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women,(S) and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord(T) should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”

Mary’s Song(U)

46 And Mary said:

“My soul glorifies the Lord(V)
47     and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,(W)
48 for he has been mindful
of the humble state of his servant.(X)
From now on all generations will call me blessed,(Y)
49     for the Mighty One has done great things(Z) for me—
    holy is his name.(AA)
50 His mercy extends to those who fear him,
    from generation to generation.(AB)
51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;(AC)
he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.(AD)
52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones
but has lifted up the humble.(AE)
53 He has filled the hungry with good things(AF)
but has sent the rich away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
    remembering to be merciful(AG)
55 to Abraham and his descendants(AH) forever,
just as he promised our ancestors.”

56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.

The Birth of John the Baptist

57 When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.

59 On the eighth day they came to circumcise(AI) the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, 60 but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called John.”(AJ)

61 They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who has that name.”

62 Then they made signs(AK) to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. 63 He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, “His name is John.”(AL) 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak,(AM) praising God. 65 All the neighbors were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea(AN) people were talking about all these things. 66 Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, “What then is this child going to be?” For the Lord’s hand was with him.(AO)

Zechariah’s Song

67 His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit(AP) and prophesied:(AQ)

68 “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,(AR)
because he has come to his people and redeemed them.(AS)
69 He has raised up a horn[b](AT) of salvation for us
in the house of his servant David(AU)
70 (as he said through his holy prophets of long ago),(AV)
71 salvation from our enemies
and from the hand of all who hate us—
72 to show mercy to our ancestors(AW)
and to remember his holy covenant,(AX)
73     the oath he swore to our father Abraham:(AY)
74 to rescue us from the hand of our enemies,
and to enable us to serve him(AZ) without fear(BA)
75     in holiness and righteousness(BB) before him all our days.

76 And you, my child, will be called a prophet(BC) of the Most High;(BD)
for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,(BE)
77 to give his people the knowledge of salvation
through the forgiveness of their sins,(BF)
78 because of the tender mercy of our God,
by which the rising sun(BG) will come to us from heaven
79 to shine on those living in darkness
and in the shadow of death,(BH)
to guide our feet into the path of peace.”(BI)
