^32 (A)Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. ^33 (B)And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, ^(C)one on his right and one on his left. ³⁴ And Jesus said, “Father, ^(D)forgive them, ^(E)for they know not what they do.”^[a] And they cast lots ^(F)to divide his garments. ³⁵ And ^(G)the people stood by, watching, ^(H)but ^(I)the rulers ^(J)scoffed at him, saying, ^(K)“He saved others; ^(L)let him save himself, ^(M)if he is ^(N)the Christ of God, ^(O)his Chosen One!” ³⁶ The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and ^(P)offering him sour wine ³⁷ and saying, ^(Q)“If you are ^(R)the King of the Jews, save yourself!” ^38 (S)There was also an inscription over him,^[b] “This is ^(T)the King of the Jews.”

¹⁷ and ^(A)he went out, ^(B)bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. ^18 (C)There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. ¹⁹ Pilate ^(D)also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” ²⁰ Many of the Jews read this inscription, for ^(E)the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. ²¹ So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’” ²² Pilate answered, ^(F)“What I have written I have written.”

^39 (A)One of the criminals who were hanged ^(B)railed at him,^[a] saying, “Are you not ^(C)the Christ? Save yourself and us!” ⁴⁰ But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? ⁴¹ And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” ⁴² And he said, “Jesus, remember me ^(D)when you come into your kingdom.” ⁴³ And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in ^(E)paradise.”

²⁶ When Jesus saw his mother and ^(A)the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, ^(B)“Woman, behold, your son!” ²⁷ Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to ^(C)his own home.

⁴⁶ And about the ninth hour Jesus ^(A)cried out with a loud voice, saying, ^(B)“Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

The Death of Jesus

²⁸ After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now ^(A)finished, said (^(B)to fulfill the Scripture), ^(C)“I thirst.” ²⁹ A jar full of sour wine stood there, ^(D)so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. ³⁰ When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, ^(E)“It is finished,” and he bowed his head and ^(F)gave up his spirit.

^44 (A)It was now about the sixth hour,^[a] and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour,^{[b] 45} while the sun's light failed. And ^(B)the curtain of the temple was torn in two. ⁴⁶ Then Jesus, ^(C)calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, ^(D)into your hands I ^(E)commit my spirit!” And having said this ^(F)he breathed his last. ⁴⁷ Now ^(G)when the centurion saw what had taken place, ^(H)he praised God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent!” ⁴⁸ And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home ^(I)beating their breasts. ⁴⁹ And all ^(J)his acquaintances and ^(K)the women who had followed him from Galilee ^(L)stood at a distance watching these things.
