The Passover with the Disciples

(A)Then came (B)the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. So Jesus[a] sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it.” They said to him, “Where will you have us prepare it?” 10 He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters 11 and tell the master of the house, (C)‘The Teacher says to you, Where is (D)the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 And he will show you (E)a large upper room furnished; prepare it there.” 13 And they went and found it (F)just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

Institution of the Lord's Supper

14 (G)And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. 15 And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you I will not eat it[b] (H)until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 And he took a cup, and (I)when he had given thanks he said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves. 18 (J)For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine (K)until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 (L)And he took bread, and (M)when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, (N)“This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, (O)“This cup that is poured out for you is (P)the new (Q)covenant in my blood.[c] 21 (R)But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is (S)with me on the table. 22 For the Son of Man goes (T)as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!” 23 And they began to question one another, which of them it could be who was going to do this.

Who Is the Greatest?

24 (U)A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. 25 (V)And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles (W)exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. 26 (X)But not so with you. Rather, let (Y)the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. 27 For who is the greater, (Z)one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But (AA)I am among you as the one who serves.

28 “You are those who have stayed with me (AB)in my trials, 29 and (AC)I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, 30 (AD)that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and (AE)sit on thrones judging (AF)the twelve tribes of Israel.

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

31 “Simon, Simon, behold, (AG)Satan demanded to have you,[d] (AH)that he might sift you like wheat, 32 but (AI)I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, (AJ)strengthen your brothers.” 33 Peter[e] said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both (AK)to prison and (AL)to death.” 34 (AM)Jesus[f] said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.”

Scripture Must Be Fulfilled in Jesus

35 And he said to them, (AN)“When I sent you out with no moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.” 36 He said to them, “But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one. 37 For I tell you that (AO)this Scripture must be fulfilled in me: (AP)‘And he was numbered with the transgressors.’ For (AQ)what is written about me has its fulfillment.” 38 And they said, “Look, Lord, here are two (AR)swords.” And he said to them, (AS)“It is enough.”

Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives

39 (AT)And he came out and went, (AU)as was his custom, to (AV)the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. 40 (AW)And when he came to (AX)the place, he said to them, (AY)“Pray that you may not (AZ)enter into temptation.” 41 And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and (BA)knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, (BB)“Father, if you are willing, remove (BC)this cup from me. (BD)Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” 43 And there appeared to him (BE)an angel from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And (BF)being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.[g] 45 And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow, 46 and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and (BG)pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

Jesus Washes the Disciples' Feet

13 Now (A)before (B)the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that (C)his hour had come (D)to depart out of this world to the Father, (E)having loved (F)his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. During supper, when (G)the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, Jesus, knowing (H)that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that (I)he had come from God and (J)was going back to God, rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, (K)tied it around his waist. Then he (L)poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” (M)Jesus answered him, “What I am doing (N)you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” (O)Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, (P)“If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, (Q)except for his feet,[a] but is completely clean. And (R)you[b] are clean, (S)but not every one of you.” 11 (T)For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”

12 When he had washed their feet and (U)put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, (V)“Do you understand what I have done to you? 13 (W)You call me (X)Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, (Y)you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 For I have given you an example, (Z)that you also should do just as I have done to you. 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, (AA)a servant[c] is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, (AB)blessed are you if you do them.

26 But the (A)Helper, the Holy Spirit, (B)whom the Father will send in my name, (C)he will teach you all things and (D)bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 (E)Peace I leave with you; (F)my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. (G)Let not your hearts be troubled, neither (H)let them be afraid.

11 These things I have spoken to you, (A)that my joy may be in you, and that (B)your joy may be full.

12 (C)“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 (D)Greater love has no one than this, (E)that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are (F)my friends (G)if you do what I command you. 15 (H)No longer do I call you servants,[a] for the servant (I)does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for (J)all that I have heard from my Father (K)I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but (L)I chose you and appointed you that you should go and (M)bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that (N)whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, (O)so that you will love one another.

The Hatred of the World

18 (P)“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 (Q)If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because (R)you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you: (S)‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, (T)they will also persecute you. (U)If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21 But (V)all these things they will do to you (W)on account of my name, (X)because they do not know him who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, (Y)they would not have been guilty of sin,[b] but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 (Z)Whoever hates me hates my Father also. 24 (AA)If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, (AB)they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have (AC)seen and hated both me and my Father. 25 But (AD)the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: (AE)‘They hated me without a cause.’

26 “But (AF)when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, (AG)he will bear witness about me. 27 And (AH)you also will bear witness, (AI)because you have been with me (AJ)from the beginning.

16 “I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. (AK)They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, (AL)the hour is coming when (AM)whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. And they will do these things (AN)because they have not known the Father, nor me. But (AO)I have said these things to you, that when (AP)their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, (AQ)because I was with you. But now (AR)I am going to him who sent me, and (AS)none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, (AT)sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for (AU)if I do not go away, (AV)the Helper will not come to you. But (AW)if (AX)I go, (AY)I will send him to you. (AZ)And when he comes, he will (BA)convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, (BB)because they do not believe in me; 10 (BC)concerning righteousness, (BD)because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 (BE)concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world (BF)is judged.

33 I have said these things to you, that (A)in me you may have peace. (B)In the world you will have (C)tribulation. But (D)take heart; (E)I have overcome the world.”

The High Priestly Prayer

17 When Jesus had spoken these words, (F)he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, (G)the hour has come; (H)glorify your Son that the Son may (I)glorify you, since (J)you have given him authority over all flesh, (K)to give eternal life to all (L)whom you have given him. (M)And this is eternal life, (N)that they know you, (O)the only (P)true God, and (Q)Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I (R)glorified you on earth, (S)having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. And now, Father, (T)glorify me in your own presence with the glory (U)that I had with you (V)before the world existed.

22 (A)The glory that you have given me (B)I have given to them, (C)that they may be one even as we are one,
