The Sabbath Year
25 (A)The Lord spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai, saying, 2 “Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, When you come into (B)the land that I give you, the land shall keep a Sabbath to the Lord. 3 For six years you shall sow your field, and for six years you shall prune your vineyard and gather in its fruits, 4 but in the seventh year there shall be a Sabbath of solemn rest for the land, a Sabbath to the Lord. You shall not sow your field or prune your vineyard. 5 (C)You shall not reap what grows of itself in your harvest, or gather the grapes of your undressed vine. It shall be a year of solemn rest for the land. 6 The Sabbath of the land[a] shall provide food for you, for yourself and for your male and female slaves[b] and for your hired worker and the sojourner who lives with you, 7 and for your cattle and for the wild animals that are in your land: (D)all its yield shall be for food.
The Year of Jubilee
8 “You shall count seven weeks[c] of years, seven times seven years, so that the time of the seven weeks of years shall give you forty-nine years. 9 Then you shall sound (E)the loud trumpet on the tenth day of the seventh month. (F)On the Day of Atonement you shall sound the trumpet throughout all your land. 10 And you shall consecrate the fiftieth year, and (G)proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you, when each of you shall return to his property and each of (H)you shall return to his clan. 11 That fiftieth year shall be a jubilee for you; in it (I)you shall neither sow nor reap (J)what grows of itself nor gather the grapes from the undressed vines. 12 For it is a jubilee. It shall be holy to you. (K)You may eat the produce of the field.[d]
13 (L)“In this year of jubilee each of you shall return to his property. 14 And if you make a sale to your neighbor or buy from your neighbor, (M)you shall not wrong one another. 15 (N)You shall pay your neighbor according to the number of years after the jubilee, and he shall sell to you according to the number of years for crops. 16 If the years are many, you shall increase the price, and if the years are few, you shall reduce the price, for it is the number of the crops that he is selling to you. 17 (O)You shall not wrong one another, but you shall fear your God, for I am the Lord your God.
18 (P)“Therefore you shall do my statutes and keep my rules and perform them, and then (Q)you will dwell in the land securely. 19 (R)The land will yield its fruit, and (S)you will eat your fill (T)and dwell in it securely. 20 And if you say, (U)‘What shall we eat in the seventh year, if (V)we may not sow or gather in our crop?’ 21 I will (W)command my blessing on you in the sixth year, so that it will produce a crop sufficient for three years. 22 (X)When you sow in the eighth year, you will be eating some of (Y)the old crop; you shall eat the old until the ninth year, when its crop arrives.
Redemption of Property
23 “The land shall not be sold in perpetuity, for (Z)the land is mine. For you are strangers and sojourners with me. 24 And in all the country you possess, you shall allow a redemption of the land.
25 “If your brother becomes poor and sells part of his property, (AA)then his nearest redeemer shall come and redeem what his brother has sold. 26 If a man has no one to redeem it and then himself becomes prosperous and finds sufficient means to redeem it, 27 let (AB)him calculate the years since he sold it and pay back the balance to the man to whom he sold it, and then return to his property. 28 But if he does not have sufficient means to recover it, then what he sold shall remain in the hand of the buyer until the year of jubilee. In the jubilee it shall (AC)be released, and (AD)he shall return to his property.
29 “If a man sells a dwelling house in a walled city, he may redeem it within a year of its sale. For a full year he shall have the right of redemption. 30 If it is not redeemed within a full year, then the house in the walled city shall belong in perpetuity to the buyer, throughout his generations; (AE)it shall not be released in the jubilee. 31 But the houses of the villages that have no wall around them shall be classified with the fields of the land. They may be redeemed, and (AF)they shall be released in the jubilee. 32 As for (AG)the cities of the Levites, the Levites may redeem at any time the houses in the cities they possess. 33 And if one of the Levites exercises his right of redemption, then the house that was sold in a city they possess shall be released in the jubilee. For the houses in the cities of the Levites are their possession among the people of Israel. 34 But the fields (AH)of pastureland belonging to their cities may not be sold, for that is their possession forever.
Kindness for Poor Brothers
35 “If your brother becomes poor and cannot maintain himself with you, (AI)you shall support him as though he were a stranger and a sojourner, and he shall live with you. 36 (AJ)Take no interest from him or profit, but (AK)fear your God, that your brother may live beside you. 37 (AL)You shall not lend him your money at interest, nor give him your food for profit. 38 (AM)I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan, and to be your God.
39 (AN)“If your brother becomes poor beside you and sells himself to you, you shall not make him serve as a slave: 40 he shall be with you as a hired worker and as a sojourner. He shall serve with you until the year of the jubilee. 41 (AO)Then he shall go out from you, (AP)he and his children with him, and go back to his own clan and return (AQ)to the possession of his fathers. 42 For they are (AR)my servants,[e] whom I brought out of the land of Egypt; they shall not be sold as slaves. 43 (AS)You shall not rule over him (AT)ruthlessly but (AU)shall fear your God. 44 As for your male and female slaves whom you may have: you may buy male and female slaves from among the nations that are around you. 45 (AV)You may also buy from among the strangers who sojourn with you and their clans that are with you, who have been born in your land, and they may be your property. 46 You may bequeath them to your sons after you to inherit as a possession forever. You may make slaves of them, but over your brothers the people of Israel (AW)you shall not rule, one over another ruthlessly.
Redeeming a Poor Man
47 “If a stranger or sojourner with you becomes rich, and (AX)your brother beside him becomes poor and sells himself to the stranger or sojourner with you or to a member of the stranger's clan, 48 then after he is sold he may be redeemed. One of his brothers may redeem him, 49 or his uncle or his cousin may (AY)redeem him, or a close relative from his clan may redeem him. Or if he (AZ)grows rich he may redeem himself. 50 He shall calculate with his buyer from the year when he sold himself to him until the year of jubilee, and the price of his sale shall vary with the number of years. The time he was with his owner shall be (BA)rated as the time of a hired worker. 51 If there are still many years left, he shall pay proportionately for his redemption some of his sale price. 52 If there remain but a few years until the year of jubilee, he shall calculate and pay for his redemption in proportion to his years of service. 53 He shall treat him as a worker hired year by year. (BB)He shall not rule ruthlessly over him in your sight. 54 And if he is not redeemed by these means, then (BC)he and his children with him shall be released in the year of jubilee. 55 For it is (BD)to me that the people of Israel are servants.[f] They are my servants whom I brought out of the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.
Blessings for Obedience
26 “You shall not make (BE)idols for yourselves or erect an (BF)image or (BG)pillar, and you shall not set up a (BH)figured stone in your land to bow down to it, for I am the Lord your God. 2 (BI)You shall keep my Sabbaths and reverence my sanctuary: I am the Lord.
3 (BJ)“If you walk in my statutes and observe my commandments and do them, 4 then (BK)I will give you your rains in their season, and the land shall yield its increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. 5 (BL)Your threshing shall last to the time of the grape harvest, and the grape harvest shall last to the time for sowing. And (BM)you shall eat your bread to the full and (BN)dwell in your land securely. 6 (BO)I will give peace in the land, and (BP)you shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid. And (BQ)I will remove harmful beasts from the land, (BR)and the sword shall not go through your land. 7 You shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword. 8 (BS)Five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you shall chase ten thousand, and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword. 9 (BT)I will turn to you and (BU)make you fruitful and multiply you and will confirm my covenant with you. 10 You shall eat (BV)old store long kept, and you shall clear out the old to make way for the new. 11 (BW)I will make my dwelling[g] among you, and my soul shall not abhor you. 12 (BX)And I (BY)will walk among you and will be your God, and you shall be my people. 13 (BZ)I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that you should not be their slaves. (CA)And I have broken the bars of your yoke and made you walk erect.
Punishment for Disobedience
14 (CB)“But if you will not listen to me and will not do all these commandments, 15 if you spurn my statutes, and if your soul abhors my rules, so that you will not do all my commandments, but (CC)break my covenant, 16 then I will do this to you: I will visit you with panic, with (CD)wasting disease and fever that consume the eyes and make the heart ache. And (CE)you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. 17 I will (CF)set my face against you, and (CG)you shall be struck down before your enemies. (CH)Those who hate you shall rule over you, and (CI)you shall flee when none pursues you. 18 And if in spite of this you will not listen to me, then I will discipline you again (CJ)sevenfold for your sins, 19 and I will break (CK)the pride of your power, and I (CL)will make your heavens like iron and your earth like bronze. 20 And (CM)your strength shall be spent in vain, for (CN)your land shall not yield its increase, and the trees of the land shall not yield their fruit.
21 (CO)“Then if you walk contrary to me and will not listen to me, I will continue striking you, sevenfold for your sins. 22 And (CP)I will let loose the wild beasts against you, which shall bereave you of your children and destroy your livestock and make you few in number, so that (CQ)your roads shall be deserted.
23 “And (CR)if by this discipline you are not turned to me (CS)but walk contrary to me, 24 (CT)then I also will walk contrary to you, and I myself will strike you sevenfold for your sins. 25 And (CU)I will bring a sword upon you, that shall execute vengeance for the covenant. And if you gather within your cities, (CV)I will send pestilence among you, and you shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy. 26 (CW)When I break your supply[h] of bread, ten women shall bake your bread in a single oven and shall dole out your bread again by weight, and (CX)you shall eat and not be satisfied.
27 “But (CY)if in spite of this you will not listen to me, but walk contrary to me, 28 then I will walk contrary to you (CZ)in fury, and I myself will discipline you (DA)sevenfold for your sins. 29 (DB)You shall eat the flesh of your sons, and you shall eat the flesh of your daughters. 30 And (DC)I will destroy your high places and cut down your incense altars and (DD)cast your dead bodies upon the dead bodies of your idols, and my soul will abhor you. 31 And I will (DE)lay your cities waste and will (DF)make your sanctuaries desolate, and (DG)I will not smell your pleasing aromas. 32 And (DH)I myself will devastate the land, so that your enemies who settle in it shall be (DI)appalled at it. 33 And (DJ)I will scatter you among the nations, and I will unsheathe the sword after you, and your land shall be a desolation, and your cities shall be a waste.
34 (DK)“Then the land shall enjoy[i] its Sabbaths as long as it lies desolate, while you are in your enemies' land; then the land shall rest, and enjoy its Sabbaths. 35 As long as it lies desolate it shall have rest, the rest that it did not have on your Sabbaths when you were dwelling in it. 36 And as for those of you who are left, (DL)I will send faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies. The (DM)sound of a (DN)driven leaf shall put them to flight, and they shall flee as one flees from the sword, and they shall fall when none pursues. 37 They shall stumble over one another, as if to escape a sword, though none pursues. And (DO)you shall have no power to stand before your enemies. 38 And you shall perish among the nations, and the land of your enemies shall eat you up. 39 And those of you who are left shall (DP)rot away in your enemies' lands because of their iniquity, and also because of the iniquities of their fathers they shall rot away like them.
40 “But if (DQ)they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers in their treachery that they (DR)committed against me, and also in walking contrary to me, 41 so that I walked contrary to them and brought them into the land of their enemies—if then their (DS)uncircumcised heart is (DT)humbled and they make amends for their iniquity, 42 then I will (DU)remember my covenant with Jacob, and I will remember my covenant with Isaac and my covenant with Abraham, and I will (DV)remember the land. 43 But (DW)the land shall be abandoned by them and enjoy its Sabbaths while it lies desolate without them, and they shall make amends for their iniquity, because they spurned my rules and their soul abhorred my statutes. 44 Yet for all that, when they are in the land of their enemies, (DX)I will not spurn them, neither will I abhor them so as to destroy them utterly and (DY)break my covenant with them, for I am the Lord their God. 45 But I will for their sake remember the covenant with their forefathers, (DZ)whom I brought out of the land of Egypt (EA)in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God: I am the Lord.”
46 (EB)These are the statutes and rules and laws that the Lord made between himself and the people of Israel through Moses (EC)on Mount Sinai.

The Sabbath Year
25 The Lord said to Moses at Mount Sinai,(A) 2 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When you enter the land I am going to give you, the land itself must observe a sabbath to the Lord. 3 For six years sow your fields, and for six years prune your vineyards and gather their crops.(B) 4 But in the seventh year the land is to have a year of sabbath rest,(C) a sabbath to the Lord. Do not sow your fields or prune your vineyards.(D) 5 Do not reap what grows of itself(E) or harvest the grapes(F) of your untended vines.(G) The land is to have a year of rest. 6 Whatever the land yields during the sabbath year(H) will be food for you—for yourself, your male and female servants, and the hired worker and temporary resident who live among you, 7 as well as for your livestock and the wild animals(I) in your land. Whatever the land produces may be eaten.
The Year of Jubilee(J)(K)
8 “‘Count off seven sabbath years—seven times seven years—so that the seven sabbath years amount to a period of forty-nine years. 9 Then have the trumpet(L) sounded everywhere on the tenth day of the seventh month;(M) on the Day of Atonement(N) sound the trumpet throughout your land. 10 Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty(O) throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee(P) for you; each of you is to return to your family property(Q) and to your own clan. 11 The fiftieth year shall be a jubilee(R) for you; do not sow and do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the untended vines.(S) 12 For it is a jubilee and is to be holy for you; eat only what is taken directly from the fields.
13 “‘In this Year of Jubilee(T) everyone is to return to their own property.
14 “‘If you sell land to any of your own people or buy land from them, do not take advantage of each other.(U) 15 You are to buy from your own people on the basis of the number of years(V) since the Jubilee. And they are to sell to you on the basis of the number of years left for harvesting crops. 16 When the years are many, you are to increase the price, and when the years are few, you are to decrease the price,(W) because what is really being sold to you is the number of crops. 17 Do not take advantage of each other,(X) but fear your God.(Y) I am the Lord your God.(Z)
18 “‘Follow my decrees and be careful to obey my laws,(AA) and you will live safely in the land.(AB) 19 Then the land will yield its fruit,(AC) and you will eat your fill and live there in safety.(AD) 20 You may ask, “What will we eat in the seventh year(AE) if we do not plant or harvest our crops?” 21 I will send you such a blessing(AF) in the sixth year that the land will yield enough for three years.(AG) 22 While you plant during the eighth year, you will eat from the old crop and will continue to eat from it until the harvest of the ninth year comes in.(AH)
23 “‘The land(AI) must not be sold permanently, because the land is mine(AJ) and you reside in my land as foreigners(AK) and strangers. 24 Throughout the land that you hold as a possession, you must provide for the redemption(AL) of the land.
25 “‘If one of your fellow Israelites becomes poor and sells some of their property, their nearest relative(AM) is to come and redeem(AN) what they have sold. 26 If, however, there is no one to redeem it for them but later on they prosper(AO) and acquire sufficient means to redeem it themselves, 27 they are to determine the value for the years(AP) since they sold it and refund the balance to the one to whom they sold it; they can then go back to their own property.(AQ) 28 But if they do not acquire the means to repay, what was sold will remain in the possession of the buyer until the Year of Jubilee. It will be returned(AR) in the Jubilee, and they can then go back to their property.(AS)
29 “‘Anyone who sells a house in a walled city retains the right of redemption a full year after its sale. During that time the seller may redeem it. 30 If it is not redeemed before a full year has passed, the house in the walled city shall belong permanently to the buyer and the buyer’s descendants. It is not to be returned in the Jubilee. 31 But houses in villages without walls around them are to be considered as belonging to the open country. They can be redeemed, and they are to be returned in the Jubilee.
32 “‘The Levites always have the right to redeem their houses in the Levitical towns,(AT) which they possess. 33 So the property of the Levites is redeemable—that is, a house sold in any town they hold—and is to be returned in the Jubilee, because the houses in the towns of the Levites are their property among the Israelites. 34 But the pastureland belonging to their towns must not be sold; it is their permanent possession.(AU)
35 “‘If any of your fellow Israelites become poor(AV) and are unable to support themselves among you, help them(AW) as you would a foreigner and stranger, so they can continue to live among you. 36 Do not take interest(AX) or any profit from them, but fear your God,(AY) so that they may continue to live among you. 37 You must not lend them money at interest(AZ) or sell them food at a profit. 38 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan(BA) and to be your God.(BB)
39 “‘If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and sell themselves to you, do not make them work as slaves.(BC) 40 They are to be treated as hired workers(BD) or temporary residents among you; they are to work for you until the Year of Jubilee. 41 Then they and their children are to be released, and they will go back to their own clans and to the property(BE) of their ancestors.(BF) 42 Because the Israelites are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt,(BG) they must not be sold as slaves. 43 Do not rule over them ruthlessly,(BH) but fear your God.(BI)
44 “‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. 45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. 46 You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.
47 “‘If a foreigner residing among you becomes rich and any of your fellow Israelites become poor and sell themselves(BJ) to the foreigner or to a member of the foreigner’s clan, 48 they retain the right of redemption(BK) after they have sold themselves. One of their relatives(BL) may redeem them: 49 An uncle or a cousin or any blood relative in their clan may redeem them. Or if they prosper,(BM) they may redeem themselves. 50 They and their buyer are to count the time from the year they sold themselves up to the Year of Jubilee.(BN) The price for their release is to be based on the rate paid to a hired worker(BO) for that number of years. 51 If many years remain, they must pay for their redemption a larger share of the price paid for them. 52 If only a few years remain until the Year of Jubilee, they are to compute that and pay for their redemption accordingly.(BP) 53 They are to be treated as workers hired from year to year; you must see to it that those to whom they owe service do not rule over them ruthlessly.(BQ)
54 “‘Even if someone is not redeemed in any of these ways, they and their children are to be released in the Year of Jubilee, 55 for the Israelites belong to me as servants. They are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt.(BR) I am the Lord your God.(BS)
Reward for Obedience
26 “‘Do not make idols(BT) or set up an image(BU) or a sacred stone(BV) for yourselves, and do not place a carved stone(BW) in your land to bow down before it. I am the Lord your God.
2 “‘Observe my Sabbaths(BX) and have reverence for my sanctuary.(BY) I am the Lord.
3 “‘If you follow my decrees and are careful to obey(BZ) my commands, 4 I will send you rain(CA) in its season,(CB) and the ground will yield its crops and the trees their fruit.(CC) 5 Your threshing will continue until grape harvest and the grape harvest will continue until planting, and you will eat all the food you want(CD) and live in safety in your land.(CE)
6 “‘I will grant peace in the land,(CF) and you will lie down(CG) and no one will make you afraid.(CH) I will remove wild beasts(CI) from the land, and the sword will not pass through your country. 7 You will pursue your enemies,(CJ) and they will fall by the sword before you. 8 Five(CK) of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand, and your enemies will fall by the sword before you.(CL)
9 “‘I will look on you with favor and make you fruitful and increase your numbers,(CM) and I will keep my covenant(CN) with you. 10 You will still be eating last year’s harvest when you will have to move it out to make room for the new.(CO) 11 I will put my dwelling place[a](CP) among you, and I will not abhor you.(CQ) 12 I will walk(CR) among you and be your God,(CS) and you will be my people.(CT) 13 I am the Lord your God,(CU) who brought you out of Egypt(CV) so that you would no longer be slaves to the Egyptians; I broke the bars of your yoke(CW) and enabled you to walk with heads held high.
Punishment for Disobedience
14 “‘But if you will not listen to me and carry out all these commands,(CX) 15 and if you reject my decrees and abhor my laws(CY) and fail to carry out all my commands and so violate my covenant,(CZ) 16 then I will do this to you: I will bring on you sudden terror, wasting diseases and fever(DA) that will destroy your sight and sap your strength.(DB) You will plant seed in vain, because your enemies will eat it.(DC) 17 I will set my face(DD) against you so that you will be defeated(DE) by your enemies;(DF) those who hate you will rule over you,(DG) and you will flee even when no one is pursuing you.(DH)
18 “‘If after all this you will not listen to me,(DI) I will punish(DJ) you for your sins seven times over.(DK) 19 I will break down your stubborn pride(DL) and make the sky above you like iron and the ground beneath you like bronze.(DM) 20 Your strength will be spent in vain,(DN) because your soil will not yield its crops, nor will the trees of your land yield their fruit.(DO)
21 “‘If you remain hostile(DP) toward me and refuse to listen to me, I will multiply your afflictions seven times over,(DQ) as your sins deserve. 22 I will send wild animals(DR) against you, and they will rob you of your children, destroy your cattle and make you so few(DS) in number that your roads will be deserted.(DT)
23 “‘If in spite of these things you do not accept my correction(DU) but continue to be hostile toward me, 24 I myself will be hostile(DV) toward you and will afflict you for your sins seven times over. 25 And I will bring the sword(DW) on you to avenge(DX) the breaking of the covenant. When you withdraw into your cities, I will send a plague(DY) among you, and you will be given into enemy hands. 26 When I cut off your supply of bread,(DZ) ten women will be able to bake your bread in one oven, and they will dole out the bread by weight. You will eat, but you will not be satisfied.
27 “‘If in spite of this you still do not listen to me(EA) but continue to be hostile toward me, 28 then in my anger(EB) I will be hostile(EC) toward you, and I myself will punish you for your sins seven times over.(ED) 29 You will eat(EE) the flesh of your sons and the flesh of your daughters.(EF) 30 I will destroy your high places,(EG) cut down your incense altars(EH) and pile your dead bodies[b] on the lifeless forms of your idols,(EI) and I will abhor(EJ) you. 31 I will turn your cities into ruins(EK) and lay waste(EL) your sanctuaries,(EM) and I will take no delight in the pleasing aroma of your offerings.(EN) 32 I myself will lay waste the land,(EO) so that your enemies who live there will be appalled.(EP) 33 I will scatter(EQ) you among the nations(ER) and will draw out my sword(ES) and pursue you. Your land will be laid waste,(ET) and your cities will lie in ruins.(EU) 34 Then the land will enjoy its sabbath years all the time that it lies desolate(EV) and you are in the country of your enemies;(EW) then the land will rest and enjoy its sabbaths. 35 All the time that it lies desolate, the land will have the rest(EX) it did not have during the sabbaths you lived in it.
36 “‘As for those of you who are left, I will make their hearts so fearful in the lands of their enemies that the sound of a windblown leaf(EY) will put them to flight.(EZ) They will run as though fleeing from the sword, and they will fall, even though no one is pursuing them.(FA) 37 They will stumble over one another(FB) as though fleeing from the sword, even though no one is pursuing them. So you will not be able to stand before your enemies.(FC) 38 You will perish(FD) among the nations; the land of your enemies will devour you.(FE) 39 Those of you who are left will waste away in the lands of their enemies because of their sins; also because of their ancestors’(FF) sins they will waste away.(FG)
40 “‘But if they will confess(FH) their sins(FI) and the sins of their ancestors(FJ)—their unfaithfulness and their hostility toward me, 41 which made me hostile(FK) toward them so that I sent them into the land of their enemies—then when their uncircumcised hearts(FL) are humbled(FM) and they pay(FN) for their sin, 42 I will remember my covenant with Jacob(FO) and my covenant with Isaac(FP) and my covenant with Abraham,(FQ) and I will remember the land. 43 For the land will be deserted(FR) by them and will enjoy its sabbaths while it lies desolate without them. They will pay for their sins because they rejected(FS) my laws and abhorred my decrees.(FT) 44 Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies,(FU) I will not reject them or abhor(FV) them so as to destroy them completely,(FW) breaking my covenant(FX) with them. The Plot to Kill Jesus
14 (A)It was now two days before (B)the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes (C)were seeking how to arrest him by stealth and kill him, 2 for they said, “Not during the feast, (D)lest there be an uproar from the people.”
Jesus Anointed at Bethany
3 (E)And while he was at (F)Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,[a] as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head. 4 There were some who said to themselves indignantly, “Why was the ointment wasted like that? 5 For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii[b] and (G)given to the poor.” And they (H)scolded her. 6 But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7 For (I)you always have the poor with you, and whenever (J)you want, you can do good for them. Judas to Betray Jesus
10 (P)Then (Q)Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, (R)went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them. 11 And when they heard it, they were glad and promised to give him money. And he sought an opportunity to (S)betray him.
The Passover with the Disciples
12 (T)And on (U)the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they (V)sacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, “Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?” 13 And he sent (W)two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus
43 (BT)And immediately, while he was still speaking, (BU)Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.” 45 And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, (BV)“Rabbi!” And he (BW)kissed him. 46 And they laid hands on him and seized him. 47 But one of those who stood by drew his (BX)sword and struck the servant[e] of the high priest and cut off his ear. 48 And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 (BY)Day after day I was with you in the temple (BZ)teaching, and you did not seize me. A Young Man Flees
51 And a young man followed him, with nothing but (CC)a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him, 52 but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.
Jesus Before the Council
53 (CD)And (CE)they led Jesus to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together. 54 (CF)And (CG)Peter had followed him at a distance, (CH)right into (CI)the courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting with (CJ)the guards and (CK)warming himself at the fire. 55 Now the chief priests and the whole council[f] were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none. 56 (CL)For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony (CM)did not agree. 57 And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying, 58 (CN)“We heard him say, (CO)‘I will destroy this temple (CP)that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, (CQ)not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even about this their testimony did not agree. 60 And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? Peter Denies Jesus
66 (DG)And as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came, 67 and seeing Peter (DH)warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.” 68 But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you mean.” And he went out into the gateway[h] and (DI)the rooster crowed.[i] 69 And the servant girl saw him and began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them.” 70 But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, “Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.” 71 But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak.” 72 And immediately the rooster crowed (DJ)a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, (DK)“Before the rooster crows twice, you will (DL)deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.[j]

14 Now the Passover(D) and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.(E) 2 “But not during the festival,” they said, “or the people may riot.”
3 While he was in Bethany,(F) reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.(G)
4 Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? 5 It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages[a] and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.
6 “Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7 The poor you will always have with you,[b] and you can help them any time you want.(H) But you will not always have me. 8 She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial.(I) 9 Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world,(J) what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”
10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve,(K) went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them.(L) 11 They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over.
The Last Supper(M)(N)
12 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb,(O) Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”
13 So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 He will show you a large room upstairs,(P) furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”
16 The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.
17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”
19 They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”
20 “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me.(Q) 21 The Son of Man(R) will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it(S) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”
23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.(T)
24 “This is my blood of the[c] covenant,(U) which is poured out for many,” he said to them. 25 “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”(V)

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(X)
27 “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written:
28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”(Z)
29 Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”
30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice[e] you yourself will disown me three times.”(AA)
31 But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you,(AB) I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.
Gethsemane(AC)
32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James and John(AD) along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,”(AE) he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”

39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.
41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour(AL) has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
Jesus Arrested(AM)
43 Just as he was speaking, Judas,(AN) one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.
44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!”(AO) and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts,(AP) and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”(AQ) 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.(AR)
51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.
Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(AS)(AT)
53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest.(AU) There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.(AV)
55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(AW) were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.
57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another,(AX) not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree.
60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.(AY)
Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”(AZ)
62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”(BA)
63 The high priest tore his clothes.(BB) “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”
They all condemned him as worthy of death.(BC) 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.(BD)
Peter Disowns Jesus(BE)
66 While Peter was below in the courtyard,(BF) one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself,(BG) she looked closely at him.
“You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,”(BH) she said.
68 But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,”(BI) he said, and went out into the entryway.[g]
69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.” 70 Again he denied it.(BJ)
After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”(BK)
71 He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”(BL)
72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time.[h] Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice[i] you will disown me three times.”(BM) And he broke down and wept.
