³² “‘The Levites always have the right to redeem their houses in the Levitical towns,^(A) which they possess. ³³ So the property of the Levites is redeemable—that is, a house sold in any town they hold—and is to be returned in the Jubilee, because the houses in the towns of the Levites are their property among the Israelites. ³⁴ But the pastureland belonging to their towns must not be sold; it is their permanent possession.^(B)

³ Moses had granted the two and a half tribes their inheritance east of the Jordan^(A) but had not granted the Levites an inheritance among the rest,^(B)

⁴ for Joseph’s descendants had become two tribes—Manasseh and Ephraim.^(A) The Levites received no share of the land but only towns to live in, with pasturelands for their flocks and herds.^(B)
