The Burnt Offering

1 The Lord called to Moses^(A) and spoke to him from the tent of meeting.^(B) He said, ²“Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When anyone among you brings an offering to the Lord,^(C) bring as your offering an animal from either the herd or the flock.^(D)

³“‘If the offering is a burnt offering^(E) from the herd,^(F) you are to offer a male without defect.^(G) You must present it at the entrance to the tent^(H) of meeting so that it will be acceptable^(I) to the Lord. ⁴You are to lay your hand on the head^(J) of the burnt offering,^(K) and it will be accepted^(L) on your behalf to make atonement^(M) for you. ⁵You are to slaughter^(N) the young bull^(O) before the Lord, and then Aaron’s sons^(P) the priests shall bring the blood and splash it against the sides of the altar^(Q) at the entrance to the tent of meeting. ⁶You are to skin^(R) the burnt offering and cut it into pieces.^(S) ⁷The sons of Aaron the priest are to put fire on the altar and arrange wood^(T) on the fire. ⁸Then Aaron’s sons the priests shall arrange the pieces, including the head and the fat,^(U) on the wood^(V) that is burning on the altar. ⁹You are to wash the internal organs and the legs with water,^(W) and the priest is to burn all of it^(X) on the altar.^(Y) It is a burnt offering,^(Z) a food offering,^(AA) an aroma pleasing to the Lord.^(AB)

¹⁰“‘If the offering is a burnt offering from the flock, from either the sheep^(AC) or the goats,^(AD) you are to offer a male without defect. ¹¹You are to slaughter it at the north side of the altar^(AE) before the Lord, and Aaron’s sons the priests shall splash its blood against the sides of the altar.^(AF) ¹²You are to cut it into pieces, and the priest shall arrange them, including the head and the fat,^(AG) on the wood that is burning on the altar. ¹³You are to wash the internal organs and the legs with water,^(AH) and the priest is to bring all of them and burn them^(AI) on the altar.^(AJ) It is a burnt offering,^(AK) a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.

¹⁴“‘If the offering to the Lord is a burnt offering of birds, you are to offer a dove or a young pigeon.^(AL) ¹⁵The priest shall bring it to the altar, wring off the head^(AM) and burn it on the altar; its blood shall be drained out on the side of the altar.^(AN) ¹⁶He is to remove the crop and the feathers^[a] and throw them down east of the altar where the ashes^(AO) are. ¹⁷He shall tear it open by the wings, not dividing it completely,^(AP) and then the priest shall burn it on the wood^(AQ) that is burning on the altar. It is a burnt offering, a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.

The Grain Offering

2 “‘When anyone brings a grain offering^(AR) to the Lord, their offering is to be of the finest flour.^(AS) They are to pour olive oil^(AT) on it,^(AU) put incense on it^(AV) ²and take it to Aaron’s sons the priests. The priest shall take a handful of the flour^(AW) and oil, together with all the incense,^(AX) and burn this as a memorial^[b] portion^(AY) on the altar, a food offering,^(AZ) an aroma pleasing to the Lord.^(BA) ³The rest of the grain offering belongs to Aaron and his sons;^(BB) it is a most holy^(BC) part of the food offerings presented to the Lord.

⁴“‘If you bring a grain offering baked in an oven,^(BD) it is to consist of the finest flour: either thick loaves made without yeast and with olive oil mixed in or thin loaves^(BE) made without yeast and brushed with olive oil.^(BF) ⁵If your grain offering is prepared on a griddle,^(BG) it is to be made of the finest flour mixed with oil, and without yeast. ⁶Crumble it and pour oil on it; it is a grain offering. ⁷If your grain offering is cooked in a pan,^(BH) it is to be made of the finest flour and some olive oil. ⁸Bring the grain offering made of these things to the Lord; present it to the priest, who shall take it to the altar. ⁹He shall take out the memorial portion^(BI) from the grain offering and burn it on the altar as a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.^(BJ) ¹⁰The rest of the grain offering belongs to Aaron and his sons;^(BK) it is a most holy part of the food offerings presented to the Lord.^(BL)

¹¹“‘Every grain offering you bring to the Lord must be made without yeast,^(BM) for you are not to burn any yeast or honey in a food offering presented to the Lord. ¹²You may bring them to the Lord as an offering of the firstfruits,^(BN) but they are not to be offered on the altar as a pleasing aroma. ¹³Season all your grain offerings with salt.^(BO) Do not leave the salt of the covenant^(BP) of your God out of your grain offerings; add salt to all your offerings.

¹⁴“‘If you bring a grain offering of firstfruits^(BQ) to the Lord, offer crushed heads of new grain roasted in the fire. ¹⁵Put oil and incense^(BR) on it; it is a grain offering. ¹⁶The priest shall burn the memorial portion^(BS) of the crushed grain and the oil, together with all the incense,^(BT) as a food offering presented to the Lord.^(BU)

The Fellowship Offering

3 “‘If your offering is a fellowship offering,^(BV) and you offer an animal from the herd, whether male or female, you are to present before the Lord an animal without defect.^(BW) ²You are to lay your hand on the head^(BX) of your offering and slaughter it^(BY) at the entrance to the tent of meeting.^(BZ) Then Aaron’s sons the priests shall splash^(CA) the blood against the sides^(CB) of the altar.^(CC) ³From the fellowship offering you are to bring a food offering to the Lord: the internal organs^(CD) and all the fat^(CE) that is connected to them, ⁴both kidneys^(CF) with the fat on them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver, which you will remove with the kidneys. ⁵Then Aaron’s sons^(CG) are to burn it on the altar^(CH) on top of the burnt offering^(CI) that is lying on the burning wood;^(CJ) it is a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.^(CK)

⁶“‘If you offer an animal from the flock as a fellowship offering^(CL) to the Lord, you are to offer a male or female without defect. ⁷If you offer a lamb,^(CM) you are to present it before the Lord,^(CN) ⁸lay your hand on its head and slaughter it^(CO) in front of the tent of meeting. Then Aaron’s sons shall splash its blood against the sides of the altar. ⁹From the fellowship offering you are to bring a food offering^(CP) to the Lord: its fat, the entire fat tail cut off close to the backbone, the internal organs and all the fat that is connected to them, ¹⁰both kidneys with the fat on them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver, which you will remove with the kidneys. ¹¹The priest shall burn them on the altar^(CQ) as a food offering^(CR) presented to the Lord.^(CS)

¹²“‘If your offering is a goat,^(CT) you are to present it before the Lord, ¹³lay your hand on its head and slaughter it in front of the tent of meeting. Then Aaron’s sons shall splash^(CU) its blood against the sides of the altar.^(CV) ¹⁴From what you offer you are to present this food offering to the Lord: the internal organs and all the fat that is connected to them, ¹⁵both kidneys with the fat on them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver, which you will remove with the kidneys.^(CW) ¹⁶The priest shall burn them on the altar^(CX) as a food offering,^(CY) a pleasing aroma.^(CZ) All the fat^(DA) is the Lord’s.^(DB)

¹⁷“‘This is a lasting ordinance^(DC) for the generations to come,^(DD) wherever you live:^(DE) You must not eat any fat or any blood.^(DF)’”

The Sin Offering

4 The Lord said to Moses, ²“Say to the Israelites: ‘When anyone sins unintentionally^(DG) and does what is forbidden in any of the Lord’s commands^(DH)—

³“‘If the anointed priest^(DI) sins,^(DJ) bringing guilt on the people, he must bring to the Lord a young bull^(DK) without defect^(DL) as a sin offering^[c]^(DM) for the sin he has committed.^(DN) ⁴He is to present the bull at the entrance to the tent of meeting before the Lord.^(DO) He is to lay his hand on its head and slaughter it there before the Lord. ⁵Then the anointed priest shall take some of the bull’s blood^(DP) and carry it into the tent of meeting. ⁶He is to dip his finger into the blood and sprinkle^(DQ) some of it seven times before the Lord,^(DR) in front of the curtain of the sanctuary.^(DS) ⁷The priest shall then put some of the blood on the horns^(DT) of the altar of fragrant incense that is before the Lord in the tent of meeting. The rest of the bull’s blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar^(DU) of burnt offering^(DV) at the entrance to the tent of meeting. ⁸He shall remove all the fat^(DW) from the bull of the sin offering—all the fat that is connected to the internal organs, ⁹both kidneys with the fat on them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver, which he will remove with the kidneys^(DX)— ¹⁰just as the fat is removed from the ox^[d]^(DY) sacrificed as a fellowship offering.^(DZ) Then the priest shall burn them on the altar of burnt offering.^(EA) ¹¹But the hide of the bull and all its flesh, as well as the head and legs, the internal organs and the intestines^(EB)— ¹²that is, all the rest of the bull—he must take outside the camp^(EC) to a place ceremonially clean,^(ED) where the ashes^(EE) are thrown, and burn it^(EF) there in a wood fire on the ash heap.^(EG)

¹³“‘If the whole Israelite community sins unintentionally^(EH) and does what is forbidden in any of the Lord’s commands, even though the community is unaware of the matter, when they realize their guilt ¹⁴and the sin they committed becomes known, the assembly must bring a young bull^(EI) as a sin offering^(EJ) and present it before the tent of meeting. ¹⁵The elders^(EK) of the community are to lay their hands^(EL) on the bull’s head^(EM) before the Lord, and the bull shall be slaughtered before the Lord.^(EN) ¹⁶Then the anointed priest is to take some of the bull’s blood^(EO) into the tent of meeting. ¹⁷He shall dip his finger into the blood and sprinkle^(EP) it before the Lord^(EQ) seven times in front of the curtain. ¹⁸He is to put some of the blood^(ER) on the horns of the altar that is before the Lord^(ES) in the tent of meeting. The rest of the blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar^(ET) of burnt offering at the entrance to the tent of meeting. ¹⁹He shall remove all the fat^(EU) from it and burn it on the altar,^(EV) ²⁰and do with this bull just as he did with the bull for the sin offering. In this way the priest will make atonement^(EW) for the community, and they will be forgiven.^(EX) ²¹Then he shall take the bull outside the camp^(EY) and burn it as he burned the first bull. This is the sin offering for the community.^(EZ)

²²“‘When a leader^(FA) sins unintentionally^(FB) and does what is forbidden in any of the commands of the Lord his God, when he realizes his guilt ²³and the sin he has committed becomes known, he must bring as his offering a male goat^(FC) without defect. ²⁴He is to lay his hand on the goat’s head and slaughter it at the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered before the Lord.^(FD) It is a sin offering.^(FE) ²⁵Then the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar^(FF) of burnt offering and pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar.^(FG) ²⁶He shall burn all the fat on the altar as he burned the fat of the fellowship offering. In this way the priest will make atonement^(FH) for the leader’s sin, and he will be forgiven.^(FI)

²⁷“‘If any member of the community sins unintentionally^(FJ) and does what is forbidden in any of the Lord’s commands, when they realize their guilt ²⁸and the sin they have committed becomes known, they must bring as their offering^(FK) for the sin they committed a female goat^(FL) without defect. ²⁹They are to lay their hand on the head^(FM) of the sin offering^(FN) and slaughter it at the place of the burnt offering.^(FO) ³⁰Then the priest is to take some of the blood with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering^(FP) and pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. ³¹They shall remove all the fat, just as the fat is removed from the fellowship offering, and the priest shall burn it on the altar^(FQ) as an aroma pleasing to the Lord.^(FR) In this way the priest will make atonement^(FS) for them, and they will be forgiven.^(FT)

³²“‘If someone brings a lamb^(FU) as their sin offering, they are to bring a female without defect.^(FV) ³³They are to lay their hand on its head and slaughter it^(FW) for a sin offering^(FX) at the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered.^(FY) ³⁴Then the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar.^(FZ) ³⁵They shall remove all the fat, just as the fat is removed from the lamb of the fellowship offering, and the priest shall burn it on the altar^(GA) on top of the food offerings presented to the Lord. In this way the priest will make atonement for them for the sin they have committed, and they will be forgiven.

5 “‘If anyone sins because they do not speak up when they hear a public charge to testify^(GB) regarding something they have seen or learned about, they will be held responsible.^(GC)

²“‘If anyone becomes aware that they are guilty—if they unwittingly touch anything ceremonially unclean (whether the carcass of an unclean animal, wild or domestic, or of any unclean creature that moves along the ground)^(GD) and they are unaware that they have become unclean,^(GE) but then they come to realize their guilt; ³or if they touch human uncleanness^(GF) (anything that would make them unclean)^(GG) even though they are unaware of it, but then they learn of it and realize their guilt; ⁴or if anyone thoughtlessly takes an oath^(GH) to do anything, whether good or evil^(GI) (in any matter one might carelessly swear about) even though they are unaware of it, but then they learn of it and realize their guilt— ⁵when anyone becomes aware that they are guilty in any of these matters, they must confess^(GJ) in what way they have sinned. ⁶As a penalty for the sin they have committed, they must bring to the Lord a female lamb or goat^(GK) from the flock as a sin offering^[e];^(GL) and the priest shall make atonement^(GM) for them for their sin.

⁷“‘Anyone who cannot afford^(GN) a lamb^(GO) is to bring two doves or two young pigeons^(GP) to the Lord as a penalty for their sin—one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering. ⁸They are to bring them to the priest, who shall first offer the one for the sin offering. He is to wring its head from its neck,^(GQ) not dividing it completely,^(GR) ⁹and is to splash^(GS) some of the blood of the sin offering against the side of the altar;^(GT) the rest of the blood must be drained out at the base of the altar.^(GU) It is a sin offering. ¹⁰The priest shall then offer the other as a burnt offering in the prescribed way^(GV) and make atonement^(GW) for them for the sin they have committed, and they will be forgiven.^(GX)

¹¹“‘If, however, they cannot afford^(GY) two doves or two young pigeons,^(GZ) they are to bring as an offering for their sin a tenth of an ephah^[f]^(HA) of the finest flour^(HB) for a sin offering. They must not put olive oil or incense on it, because it is a sin offering. ¹²They are to bring it to the priest, who shall take a handful of it as a memorial^[g] portion^(HC) and burn it on the altar^(HD) on top of the food offerings presented to the Lord. It is a sin offering. ¹³In this way the priest will make atonement^(HE) for them for any of these sins they have committed, and they will be forgiven. The rest of the offering will belong to the priest,^(HF) as in the case of the grain offering.^(HG)’”

The Guilt Offering

¹⁴The Lord said to Moses: ¹⁵“When anyone is unfaithful to the Lord by sinning unintentionally^(HH) in regard to any of the Lord’s holy things, they are to bring to the Lord as a penalty^(HI) a ram^(HJ) from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value in silver, according to the sanctuary shekel.^[h]^(HK) It is a guilt offering.^(HL) ¹⁶They must make restitution^(HM) for what they have failed to do in regard to the holy things, pay an additional penalty of a fifth of its value^(HN) and give it all to the priest. The priest will make atonement for them with the ram as a guilt offering, and they will be forgiven.

¹⁷“If anyone sins and does what is forbidden in any of the Lord’s commands, even though they do not know it,^(HO) they are guilty and will be held responsible.^(HP) ¹⁸They are to bring to the priest as a guilt offering^(HQ) a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value. In this way the priest will make atonement for them for the wrong they have committed unintentionally, and they will be forgiven.^(HR) ¹⁹It is a guilt offering; they have been guilty of^[i] wrongdoing against the Lord.”^(HS)

The Law of Burnt Offerings

¹⁴‘But if his offering to the Lord is a burnt offering of birds, then he shall bring his offering from the ^(V)turtledoves or from young doves. ¹⁵The priest shall bring it to the altar, and pinch off its head, and offer it up in smoke on the altar; and its blood is to be drained out ^(W)on the side of the altar. ¹⁶He shall also remove its craw with its feathers and throw it beside the altar eastward, to the place of the ^(X)fatty ashes. ¹⁷Then he shall tear it by its wings, but ^(Y)shall not sever it. And the priest shall offer it up in smoke on the altar, on the wood which is on the fire; ^(Z)it is a burnt offering, an offering by fire of a soothing aroma to the Lord.

The Law of Grain Offerings

2 ‘Now when anyone presents a ^(AA)grain offering as an offering to the Lord, his offering shall be of fine flour, and he shall pour oil on it and put frankincense on it. ²He shall then bring it to Aaron’s sons the priests; and he shall take from it ^(AB)his handful of its fine flour and of its oil, with all of its frankincense. And the priest shall offer it up in smoke as its ^(AC)memorial portion on the altar, an offering by fire of a soothing aroma to the Lord. ³^(AD)The remainder of the grain offering belongs to ^(AE)Aaron and his sons: a most holy part of the offerings to the Lord by fire.

⁴‘Now when you bring an offering of a grain offering baked in an oven, it shall be ^(AF)unleavened cakes of fine flour mixed with oil, or unleavened wafers ^[c]spread with oil. ⁵And if your offering is a grain offering made ^(AG)on the griddle, it shall be of fine flour, unleavened, mixed with oil; ⁶you shall break it into bits and pour oil on it; it is a grain offering. ⁷Now if your offering is a grain offering made ^(AH)in a ^[d]pan, it shall be made of fine flour with oil. ⁸When you bring in the grain offering which is made of these things to the Lord, it shall be presented to the priest, and he shall bring it to the altar. ⁹The priest then shall take up from the grain offering ^(AI)its memorial portion, and shall offer it up in smoke on the altar as an offering by fire of a soothing aroma to the Lord. ¹⁰^(AJ)The remainder of the grain offering belongs to Aaron and his sons: a most holy part of the offerings to the Lord by fire.

¹¹‘^(AK)No grain offering, which you bring to the Lord, shall be made with leaven, for you shall not offer ^[e]up in smoke any leaven or any honey as an ^(AL)offering by fire to the Lord. ¹²^(AM)As an offering of first fruits you shall bring them to the Lord, but they shall not ascend as a soothing aroma on the altar. ¹³Every grain offering of yours, moreover, you shall season with salt, so that ^(AN)the salt of the covenant of your God will not be lacking from your grain offering; with all your offerings you shall offer salt.

¹⁴‘Also if you bring a grain offering of early ripened things to the Lord, you shall bring ^(AO)fresh heads of grain roasted in the fire, crushed grain of new growth, for the grain offering of your early ripened produce. ¹⁵You shall then put oil on it and place incense on it; it is a grain offering. ¹⁶Then the priest shall offer up in smoke ^(AP)its memorial portion, part of its crushed grain and its oil with all its incense as an offering by fire to the Lord.

The Law of Peace Offerings

3 ‘Now if his offering is a ^(AQ)sacrifice of peace offerings, if he is going to offer from the herd, whether male or female, he shall offer it ^(AR)without defect before the Lord. ²And ^(AS)he shall lay his hand on the head of his offering and ^(AT)slaughter it at the doorway of the tent of meeting, and Aaron’s sons the priests shall sprinkle the blood around on the altar. ³From the sacrifice of the peace offerings he shall then present an offering by fire to the Lord, the fat that covers the entrails and all the fat that is on the entrails, ⁴and the two kidneys with the fat that is on them, which is on the loins, and the ^[f]lobe of the liver, which he shall remove with the kidneys. ⁵Then ^(AU)Aaron’s sons shall offer it up in smoke on the altar ^(AV)on the burnt offering, which is on the wood that is on the fire; ^(AW)it is an offering by fire of a soothing aroma to the Lord. ⁶But if his offering for a sacrifice of peace offerings to the Lord is from the flock, he shall offer it, male or female, ^(AX)without defect. ⁷If he is going to offer ^(AY)a lamb for his offering, then he shall offer it ^(AZ)before the Lord, ⁸and ^(BA)he shall lay his hand on the head of his offering and ^(BB)slaughter it in front of the tent of meeting, and Aaron’s sons shall ^(BC)sprinkle its blood around on the altar. ⁹From the ^(BD)sacrifice of peace offerings he shall then bring as an offering by fire to the Lord, its fat, the entire fat tail which he shall remove close to the backbone, the fat that covers the entrails, and all the fat that is on the entrails, ¹⁰and the two kidneys with the fat that is on them, which is on the loins, and the ^[g]lobe of the liver, which he shall remove ^(BE)with the kidneys. ¹¹Then the priest shall offer it up in smoke ^(BF)on the altar as ^(BG)food, an offering by fire to the Lord.

¹²‘Now if his offering is ^(BH)a goat, then he shall offer it before the Lord, ¹³and he shall lay his hand on its head and slaughter it in front of the tent of meeting, and the sons of Aaron shall sprinkle its blood around on the altar. ¹⁴From it he shall present his offering as an offering by fire to the Lord, the fat that covers the entrails and all the fat that is on the entrails, ¹⁵and the two kidneys with the fat that is on them, which is on the loins, and the ^[h]lobe of the liver, which he shall remove ^(BI)with the kidneys. ¹⁶The priest shall offer them up in smoke on the altar as food, an offering by fire as a soothing aroma; ^(BJ)all fat is the Lord’s. ¹⁷It is a ^(BK)permanent statute throughout your generations in all your dwelling places: you shall not eat any fat ^(BL)or any blood.’”

The Law of Sin Offerings

4 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ²“Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘If a person sins ^(BM)unintentionally in any of the ^[i]things which the Lord has ^(BN)commanded not to be done, and commits any of them, ³^(BO)if the anointed priest sins so as to bring guilt on the people, then he is to offer to the Lord a ^[j]bull without defect as a sin offering for his sin which he has ^[k]committed. ⁴He shall bring the bull to the doorway of the tent of meeting before the Lord, and ^(BP)he shall lay his hand on the head of the bull and slaughter the bull before the Lord. ⁵Then the ^(BQ)anointed priest is to take some of the blood of the bull and bring it to the tent of meeting, ⁶and the priest shall dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle some of the blood seven times before the Lord, in front of ^(BR)the veil of the sanctuary. ⁷The priest shall also put some of the blood on the horns of ^(BS)the altar of fragrant incense which is before the Lord in the tent of meeting; and all the rest of the blood of the bull he shall pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering, which is at the doorway of the tent of meeting. ⁸And ^(BT)he shall remove from it all the fat of the bull of the sin offering: the fat that covers the entrails, and all the fat which is on the entrails, ⁹and the two kidneys with the fat that is on them, which is on the loins, and the ^[l]lobe of the liver, which he shall remove ^(BU)with the kidneys ¹⁰(just as it is removed from the ox of the sacrifice of peace offerings); and the priest is to offer them up in smoke on the altar of burnt offering. ¹¹But ^(BV)the hide of the bull and all its flesh, along with its head, its legs, its entrails, and its refuse, ¹²^[m]that is, all the rest of the bull, he is to bring out to ^(BW)a clean place outside the camp where the fatty ashes are poured out, and burn it on wood with fire; where the fatty ashes are poured out it shall be burned.

¹³‘^(BX)Now if the entire congregation of Israel does wrong unintentionally and the matter ^[n]escapes the notice of the assembly, and they commit any of the ^[o]things which the Lord has commanded not to be done, and they become guilty; ¹⁴^(BY)when the sin ^[p]which they have ^[q]committed becomes known, then the assembly shall offer ^(BZ)a ^[r]bull of the herd as a sin offering and bring it in front of the tent of meeting. ¹⁵Then ^(CA)the elders of the congregation shall lay their hands on the head of the bull before the Lord, and the bull shall be slaughtered ^(CB)before the Lord. ¹⁶Then the anointed priest is to bring some of the blood of the bull to the tent of meeting; ¹⁷and ^(CC)the priest shall dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle it seven times before the Lord, in front of the veil. ¹⁸He shall then put some of the blood on the horns of ^(CD)the altar which is before the Lord ^[s]in the tent of meeting; and all the rest of the blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering which is at the doorway of the tent of meeting. ¹⁹And ^(CE)he shall remove all its fat from it and offer it up in smoke on the altar. ²⁰He shall also do with the bull just as he did with ^(CF)the bull of the sin offering; he shall do the same with it. So ^(CG)the priest shall make atonement for them, and they will be forgiven. ²¹Then he is to bring the bull out to a place outside the camp and burn it just as he burned the first bull; it is ^(CH)the sin offering for the assembly.

²²‘When ^(CI)a leader ^(CJ)sins and unintentionally does any of ^[t]the things which the Lord his God has commanded not to be done, and he becomes guilty, ²³^[u]^(CK)if his sin ^[v]which he has committed is made known to him, he shall bring as his offering a ^[w]^(CL)goat, ^(CM)a male without defect. ²⁴And he shall lay his hand on the head of the male goat and slaughter it in the place where they slaughter the burnt offering before the Lord; it is a sin offering. ²⁵Then the priest is to take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on ^(CN)the horns of the altar of burnt offering; and the rest of its blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering. ²⁶And he shall offer ^(CO)all its fat up in smoke on the altar as in the case of the fat of the sacrifice of peace offerings. So ^(CP)the priest shall make atonement for him regarding his sin, and he will be forgiven.

²⁷‘Now if ^[x]anyone of the ^[y]common people sins ^(CQ)unintentionally by doing any of the ^[z]things which the Lord has commanded not to be done, and becomes guilty, ²⁸^[aa]^(CR)if his sin which he has ^[ab]committed is made known to him, then he shall bring as his offering a ^[ac]^(CS)goat, a ^(CT)female without defect, for his sin which he has ^[ad]committed. ²⁹And ^(CU)he shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and ^(CV)slaughter the sin offering at the place of the burnt offering. ³⁰The priest shall then take some of its blood with his finger and put it on the horns of ^(CW)the altar of burnt offering; and ^(CX)all the rest of its blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar. ³¹^(CY)Then he shall remove all its fat, just as the fat was removed from the sacrifice of peace offerings; and the priest shall offer it up in smoke on the altar as ^(CZ)a soothing aroma to the Lord. So the priest shall make atonement for him, ^[ae]and he will be forgiven.

³²‘But if he brings ^(DA)a lamb as his offering for a sin offering, he shall bring a female without defect. ³³And ^(DB)he shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and slaughter it as a sin offering ^(DC)in the place where they slaughter the burnt offering. ³⁴And the priest is to take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of ^(DD)the altar of burnt offering, and ^(DE)all the rest of its blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar. ³⁵Then he shall remove ^(DF)all its fat, just as the fat of the lamb is removed from the sacrifice of the peace offerings, and the priest shall offer ^[af]it up in smoke on the altar, on the offerings by fire to the Lord. So ^(DG)the priest shall make atonement for him regarding his sin which he has ^[ag]committed, and he will be forgiven.

The Law of Guilt Offerings

5 ‘Now if a person sins after he hears a ^[ah]public ^(DH)order to testify when he is a witness, whether he has seen or otherwise known, if he does not tell it, then he will bear his punishment. ²Or if a person touches ^(DI)any unclean thing, whether a carcass of an unclean animal, or the carcass of unclean cattle, or a carcass of unclean swarming things, though it is hidden from him and he is unclean, then he will be guilty. ³Or if he touches human uncleanness, of whatever sort his uncleanness may be with which he becomes unclean, and it is hidden from him, and then he comes to know it, he will be guilty. ⁴Or if a person ^(DJ)swears thoughtlessly with his lips to do evil or to do good, in whatever matter people speak thoughtlessly with an oath, and it is hidden from him, and then he comes to know it, he will be guilty of one of these things. ⁵So it shall be when he becomes guilty of one of these things, that he shall ^(DK)confess that in which he has sinned. ⁶He shall also bring his guilt offering to the Lord for his sin which he has ^[ai]committed, ^(DL)a female from the flock, a lamb or a ^[aj]goat as a sin offering. So the priest shall make atonement on his behalf for his sin.

⁷‘But if ^[ak]he cannot afford a lamb, then he shall bring to the Lord his guilt offering for that in which he has sinned, two turtledoves or two young doves, ^(DM)one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering. ⁸He shall bring them to the priest, who shall first offer that which is for the sin offering, and shall pinch off its head at the front of its neck, but he ^(DN)shall not sever it. ⁹He shall also sprinkle some of the blood of the sin offering ^(DO)on the side of the altar, while the rest of the blood shall be drained out ^(DP)at the base of the altar: it is a sin offering. ¹⁰The second he shall then prepare as a burnt offering ^(DQ)according to the ordinance. ^(DR)So the priest shall make atonement on his behalf for his sin which he has ^[al]committed, and it will be forgiven him.

¹¹‘But ^(DS)if his ^[am]means are insufficient for two turtledoves or two young doves, then for his offering for that which he has sinned, he shall bring the tenth of an ^[an]ephah of fine flour as a sin offering; ^(DT)he shall not put oil on it or place incense on it, for it is a sin offering. ¹²He shall bring it to the priest, and the priest shall take his handful of it as its memorial portion and offer it up in smoke on the altar, ^[ao]with the offerings of the Lord by fire: it is a sin offering. ¹³So the priest shall make atonement for him concerning his sin which he has ^[ap]committed from ^(DU)one of these, and it will be forgiven him; then ^(DV)the rest shall become the priest’s, like the grain offering.’”

¹⁴Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ¹⁵“^(DW)If a person acts unfaithfully and sins ^(DX)unintentionally against the Lord’s holy things, then he shall bring his ^(DY)guilt offering to the Lord: ^(DZ)a ram without defect from the flock, according to your assessment in silver by shekels, in terms of the ^(EA)shekel of the sanctuary, as a guilt offering. ¹⁶And ^(EB)he shall make restitution for that which he has sinned against the holy thing, and shall add to it a fifth part of it and give it to the priest. ^(EC)The priest shall then make atonement for him with the ram of the guilt offering, and it will be forgiven him.

¹⁷“Now if a person sins and does any of the things ^[aq]which the Lord has commanded not to be done, ^(ED)though he was unaware, he is still guilty and shall bear his punishment. ¹⁸He is then to bring to the priest ^(EE)a ram without defect from the flock, according to your assessment, as a guilt offering. So the priest shall make atonement for him concerning his sin which he committed ^(EF)unintentionally and did not know it, and it will be forgiven him. ¹⁹It is a guilt offering; he was certainly guilty before the Lord.”

Procedures for the Burnt Offering

1 The Lord called to Moses from the Tabernacle^[a] and said to him, ²“Give the following instructions to the people of Israel. When you present an animal as an offering to the Lord, you may take it from your herd of cattle or your flock of sheep and goats.

³“If the animal you present as a burnt offering is from the herd, it must be a male with no defects. Bring it to the entrance of the Tabernacle so you^[b] may be accepted by the Lord. ⁴Lay your hand on the animal’s head, and the Lord will accept its death in your place to purify you, making you right with him.^[c] ⁵Then slaughter the young bull in the Lord’s presence, and Aaron’s sons, the priests, will present the animal’s blood by splattering it against all sides of the altar that stands at the entrance to the Tabernacle. ⁶Then skin the animal and cut it into pieces. ⁷The sons of Aaron the priest will build a wood fire on the altar. ⁸They will arrange the pieces of the offering, including the head and fat, on the wood burning on the altar. ⁹But the internal organs and the legs must first be washed with water. Then the priest will burn the entire sacrifice on the altar as a burnt offering. It is a special gift, a pleasing aroma to the Lord.

¹⁰“If the animal you present as a burnt offering is from the flock, it may be either a sheep or a goat, but it must be a male with no defects. ¹¹Slaughter the animal on the north side of the altar in the Lord’s presence, and Aaron’s sons, the priests, will splatter its blood against all sides of the altar. ¹²Then cut the animal in pieces, and the priests will arrange the pieces of the offering, including the head and fat, on the wood burning on the altar. ¹³But the internal organs and the legs must first be washed with water. Then the priest will burn the entire sacrifice on the altar as a burnt offering. It is a special gift, a pleasing aroma to the Lord.

¹⁴“If you present a bird as a burnt offering to the Lord, choose either a turtledove or a young pigeon. ¹⁵The priest will take the bird to the altar, wring off its head, and burn it on the altar. But first he must drain its blood against the side of the altar. ¹⁶The priest must also remove the crop and the feathers^[d] and throw them in the ashes on the east side of the altar. ¹⁷Then, grasping the bird by its wings, the priest will tear the bird open, but without tearing it apart. Then he will burn it as a burnt offering on the wood burning on the altar. It is a special gift, a pleasing aroma to the Lord.

Procedures for the Grain Offering

2 “When you present grain as an offering to the Lord, the offering must consist of choice flour. You are to pour olive oil on it, sprinkle it with frankincense, ²and bring it to Aaron’s sons, the priests. The priest will scoop out a handful of the flour moistened with oil, together with all the frankincense, and burn this representative portion on the altar. It is a special gift, a pleasing aroma to the Lord. ³The rest of the grain offering will then be given to Aaron and his sons. This offering will be considered a most holy part of the special gifts presented to the Lord.

⁴“If your offering is a grain offering baked in an oven, it must be made of choice flour, but without any yeast. It may be presented in the form of thin cakes mixed with olive oil or wafers spread with olive oil. ⁵If your grain offering is cooked on a griddle, it must be made of choice flour mixed with olive oil but without any yeast. ⁶Break it in pieces and pour olive oil on it; it is a grain offering. ⁷If your grain offering is prepared in a pan, it must be made of choice flour and olive oil.

⁸“No matter how a grain offering for the Lord has been prepared, bring it to the priest, who will present it at the altar. ⁹The priest will take a representative portion of the grain offering and burn it on the altar. It is a special gift, a pleasing aroma to the Lord. ¹⁰The rest of the grain offering will then be given to Aaron and his sons as their food. This offering will be considered a most holy part of the special gifts presented to the Lord.

¹¹“Do not use yeast in preparing any of the grain offerings you present to the Lord, because no yeast or honey may be burned as a special gift presented to the Lord. ¹²You may add yeast and honey to an offering of the first crops of your harvest, but these must never be offered on the altar as a pleasing aroma to the Lord. ¹³Season all your grain offerings with salt to remind you of God’s eternal covenant. Never forget to add salt to your grain offerings.

¹⁴“If you present a grain offering to the Lord from the first portion of your harvest, bring fresh grain that is coarsely ground and roasted on a fire. ¹⁵Put olive oil on this grain offering, and sprinkle it with frankincense. ¹⁶The priest will take a representative portion of the grain moistened with oil, together with all the frankincense, and burn it as a special gift presented to the Lord.

Procedures for the Peace Offering

3 “If you present an animal from the herd as a peace offering to the Lord, it may be a male or a female, but it must have no defects. ²Lay your hand on the animal’s head, and slaughter it at the entrance of the Tabernacle.^[e] Then Aaron’s sons, the priests, will splatter its blood against all sides of the altar. ³The priest must present part of this peace offering as a special gift to the Lord. This includes all the fat around the internal organs, ⁴the two kidneys and the fat around them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver. These must be removed with the kidneys, ⁵and Aaron’s sons will burn them on top of the burnt offering on the wood burning on the altar. It is a special gift, a pleasing aroma to the Lord.

⁶“If you present an animal from the flock as a peace offering to the Lord, it may be a male or a female, but it must have no defects. ⁷If you present a sheep as your offering, bring it to the Lord, ⁸lay your hand on its head, and slaughter it in front of the Tabernacle. Aaron’s sons will then splatter the sheep’s blood against all sides of the altar. ⁹The priest must present the fat of this peace offering as a special gift to the Lord. This includes the fat of the broad tail cut off near the backbone, all the fat around the internal organs, ¹⁰the two kidneys and the fat around them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver. These must be removed with the kidneys, ¹¹and the priest will burn them on the altar. It is a special gift of food presented to the Lord.

¹²“If you present a goat as your offering, bring it to the Lord, ¹³lay your hand on its head, and slaughter it in front of the Tabernacle. Aaron’s sons will then splatter the goat’s blood against all sides of the altar. ¹⁴The priest must present part of this offering as a special gift to the Lord. This includes all the fat around the internal organs, ¹⁵the two kidneys and the fat around them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver. These must be removed with the kidneys, ¹⁶and the priest will burn them on the altar. It is a special gift of food, a pleasing aroma to the Lord. All the fat belongs to the Lord.

¹⁷“You must never eat any fat or blood. This is a permanent law for you, and it must be observed from generation to generation, wherever you live.”

Procedures for the Sin Offering

4 Then the Lord said to Moses, ²“Give the following instructions to the people of Israel. This is how you are to deal with those who sin unintentionally by doing anything that violates one of the Lord’s commands.

³“If the high priest^[f] sins, bringing guilt upon the entire community, he must give a sin offering for the sin he has committed. He must present to the Lord a young bull with no defects. ⁴He must bring the bull to the Lord at the entrance of the Tabernacle,^[g] lay his hand on the bull’s head, and slaughter it before the Lord. ⁵The high priest will then take some of the bull’s blood into the Tabernacle, ⁶dip his finger in the blood, and sprinkle it seven times before the Lord in front of the inner curtain of the sanctuary. ⁷The priest will then put some of the blood on the horns of the altar for fragrant incense that stands in the Lord’s presence inside the Tabernacle. He will pour out the rest of the bull’s blood at the base of the altar for burnt offerings at the entrance of the Tabernacle. ⁸Then the priest must remove all the fat of the bull to be offered as a sin offering. This includes all the fat around the internal organs, ⁹the two kidneys and the fat around them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver. He must remove these along with the kidneys, ¹⁰just as he does with cattle offered as a peace offering, and burn them on the altar of burnt offerings. ¹¹But he must take whatever is left of the bull—its hide, meat, head, legs, internal organs, and dung— ¹²and carry it away to a place outside the camp that is ceremonially clean, the place where the ashes are dumped. There, on the ash heap, he will burn it on a wood fire.

¹³“If the entire Israelite community sins by violating one of the Lord’s commands, but the people don’t realize it, they are still guilty. ¹⁴When they become aware of their sin, the people must bring a young bull as an offering for their sin and present it before the Tabernacle. ¹⁵The elders of the community must then lay their hands on the bull’s head and slaughter it before the Lord. ¹⁶The high priest will then take some of the bull’s blood into the Tabernacle, ¹⁷dip his finger in the blood, and sprinkle it seven times before the Lord in front of the inner curtain. ¹⁸He will then put some of the blood on the horns of the altar for fragrant incense that stands in the Lord’s presence inside the Tabernacle. He will pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar for burnt offerings at the entrance of the Tabernacle. ¹⁹Then the priest must remove all the animal’s fat and burn it on the altar, ²⁰just as he does with the bull offered as a sin offering for the high priest. Through this process, the priest will purify the people, making them right with the Lord,^[h] and they will be forgiven. ²¹Then the priest must take what is left of the bull and carry it outside the camp and burn it there, just as is done with the sin offering for the high priest. This offering is for the sin of the entire congregation of Israel.

²²“If one of Israel’s leaders sins by violating one of the commands of the Lord his God but doesn’t realize it, he is still guilty. ²³When he becomes aware of his sin, he must bring as his offering a male goat with no defects. ²⁴He must lay his hand on the goat’s head and slaughter it at the place where burnt offerings are slaughtered before the Lord. This is an offering for his sin. ²⁵Then the priest will dip his finger in the blood of the sin offering and put it on the horns of the altar for burnt offerings. He will pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. ²⁶Then he must burn all the goat’s fat on the altar, just as he does with the peace offering. Through this process, the priest will purify the leader from his sin, making him right with the Lord, and he will be forgiven.

²⁷“If any of the common people sin by violating one of the Lord’s commands, but they don’t realize it, they are still guilty. ²⁸When they become aware of their sin, they must bring as an offering for their sin a female goat with no defects. ²⁹They must lay a hand on the head of the sin offering and slaughter it at the place where burnt offerings are slaughtered. ³⁰Then the priest will dip his finger in the blood and put it on the horns of the altar for burnt offerings. He will pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. ³¹Then he must remove all the goat’s fat, just as he does with the fat of the peace offering. He will burn the fat on the altar, and it will be a pleasing aroma to the Lord. Through this process, the priest will purify the people, making them right with the Lord, and they will be forgiven.

³²“If the people bring a sheep as their sin offering, it must be a female with no defects. ³³They must lay a hand on the head of the sin offering and slaughter it at the place where burnt offerings are slaughtered. ³⁴Then the priest will dip his finger in the blood of the sin offering and put it on the horns of the altar for burnt offerings. He will pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. ³⁵Then he must remove all the sheep’s fat, just as he does with the fat of a sheep presented as a peace offering. He will burn the fat on the altar on top of the special gifts presented to the Lord. Through this process, the priest will purify the people from their sin, making them right with the Lord, and they will be forgiven.

Sins Requiring a Sin Offering

5 “If you are called to testify about something you have seen or that you know about, it is sinful to refuse to testify, and you will be punished for your sin.

²“Or suppose you unknowingly touch something that is ceremonially unclean, such as the carcass of an unclean animal. When you realize what you have done, you must admit your defilement and your guilt. This is true whether it is a wild animal, a domestic animal, or an animal that scurries along the ground.

³“Or suppose you unknowingly touch something that makes a person unclean. When you realize what you have done, you must admit your guilt.

⁴“Or suppose you make a foolish vow of any kind, whether its purpose is for good or for bad. When you realize its foolishness, you must admit your guilt.

⁵“When you become aware of your guilt in any of these ways, you must confess your sin. ⁶Then you must bring to the Lord as the penalty for your sin a female from the flock, either a sheep or a goat. This is a sin offering with which the priest will purify you from your sin, making you right with the Lord.^[i]

⁷“But if you cannot afford to bring a sheep, you may bring to the Lord two turtledoves or two young pigeons as the penalty for your sin. One of the birds will be for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering. ⁸You must bring them to the priest, who will present the first bird as the sin offering. He will wring its neck but without severing its head from the body. ⁹Then he will sprinkle some of the blood of the sin offering against the sides of the altar, and the rest of the blood will be drained out at the base of the altar. This is an offering for sin. ¹⁰The priest will then prepare the second bird as a burnt offering, following all the procedures that have been prescribed. Through this process the priest will purify you from your sin, making you right with the Lord, and you will be forgiven.

¹¹“If you cannot afford to bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons, you may bring two quarts^[j] of choice flour for your sin offering. Since it is an offering for sin, you must not moisten it with olive oil or put any frankincense on it. ¹²Take the flour to the priest, who will scoop out a handful as a representative portion. He will burn it on the altar on top of the special gifts presented to the Lord. It is an offering for sin. ¹³Through this process, the priest will purify those who are guilty of any of these sins, making them right with the Lord, and they will be forgiven. The rest of the flour will belong to the priest, just as with the grain offering.”

Procedures for the Guilt Offering

¹⁴Then the Lord said to Moses, ¹⁵“If one of you commits a sin by unintentionally defiling the Lord’s sacred property, you must bring a guilt offering to the Lord. The offering must be your own ram with no defects, or you may buy one of equal value with silver, as measured by the weight of the sanctuary shekel.^[k] ¹⁶You must make restitution for the sacred property you have harmed by paying for the loss, plus an additional 20 percent. When you give the payment to the priest, he will purify you with the ram sacrificed as a guilt offering, making you right with the Lord, and you will be forgiven.

¹⁷“Suppose you sin by violating one of the Lord’s commands. Even if you are unaware of what you have done, you are guilty and will be punished for your sin. ¹⁸For a guilt offering, you must bring to the priest your own ram with no defects, or you may buy one of equal value. Through this process the priest will purify you from your unintentional sin, making you right with the Lord, and you will be forgiven. ¹⁹This is a guilt offering, for you have been guilty of an offense against the Lord.”

The Message

Whole-Burnt-Offering

1 ^1-2God called Moses and spoke to him from the Tent of Meeting: “Speak to the People of Israel. Tell them, When anyone presents an offering to God, present an animal from either the herd or the flock.

^3-9“If the offering is a Whole-Burnt-Offering from the herd, present a male without a defect at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting that it may be accepted by God. Lay your hand on the head of the Whole-Burnt-Offering so that it may be accepted on your behalf to make atonement for you. Slaughter the bull in God’s presence. Aaron’s sons, the priests, will make an offering of the blood by splashing it against all sides of the Altar that stands at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. Next, skin the Whole-Burnt-Offering and cut it up. Aaron’s sons, the priests, will prepare a fire on the Altar, carefully laying out the wood, and then arrange the body parts, including the head and the suet, on the wood prepared for the fire on the Altar. Scrub the entrails and legs clean. The priest will burn it all on the Altar: a Whole-Burnt-Offering, a Fire-Gift, a pleasing fragrance to God.

^10-13“If the Whole-Burnt-Offering comes from the flock, whether sheep or goat, present a male without defect. Slaughter it on the north side of the Altar in God’s presence. The sons of Aaron, the priests, will throw the blood against all sides of the Altar. Cut it up and the priest will arrange the pieces, including the head and the suet, on the wood prepared for burning on the Altar. Scrub the entrails and legs clean. The priest will offer it all, burning it on the Altar: a Whole-Burnt-Offering, a Fire-Gift, a pleasing fragrance to God.

^14-17“If a bird is presented to God for the Whole-Burnt-Offering it can be either a dove or a pigeon. The priest will bring it to the Altar, wring off its head, and burn it on the Altar. But he will first drain the blood on the side of the Altar, remove the gizzard and its contents, and throw them on the east side of the Altar where the ashes are piled. Then rip it open by its wings but leave it in one piece and burn it on the Altar on the wood prepared for the fire: a Whole-Burnt-Offering, a Fire-Gift, a pleasing fragrance to God.”

Grain-Offering

2 ^1-3“When you present a Grain-Offering to God, use fine flour. Pour oil on it, put incense on it, and bring it to Aaron’s sons, the priests. One of them will take a handful of the fine flour and oil, with all the incense, and burn it on the Altar for a memorial: a Fire-Gift, a pleasing fragrance to God. The rest of the Grain-Offering is for Aaron and his sons—a most holy part of the Fire-Gifts to God.

⁴“When you present a Grain-Offering of oven-baked loaves, use fine flour, mixed with oil but no yeast. Or present wafers made without yeast and spread with oil.

^5-6“If you bring a Grain-Offering cooked on a griddle, use fine flour mixed with oil but without yeast. Crumble it and pour oil on it—it’s a Grain-Offering.

⁷“If you bring a Grain-Offering deep-fried in a pan, make it of fine flour with oil.

^8-10“Bring the Grain-Offering you make from these ingredients and present it to the priest. He will bring it to the Altar, break off a memorial piece from the Grain-Offering, and burn it on the Altar: a Fire-Gift, a pleasing fragrance to God. The rest of the Grain-Offering is for Aaron and his sons—a most holy part of the gifts to God.

^11-13“All the Grain-Offerings that you present to God must be made without yeast; you must never burn any yeast or honey as a Fire-Gift to God. You may offer them to God as an offering of firstfruits but not on the Altar as a pleasing fragrance. Season every presentation of your Grain-Offering with salt. Don’t leave the salt of the covenant with your God out of your Grain-Offerings. Present all your offerings with salt.

^14-16“If you present a Grain-Offering of firstfruits to God, bring crushed heads of the new grain roasted. Put oil and incense on it—it’s a Grain-Offering. The priest will burn some of the mixed grain and oil with all the incense as a memorial—a Fire-Gift to God.”

The Peace-Offering

3 ^1-5“If your offering is a Peace-Offering and you present an animal from the herd, either male or female, it must be an animal without any defect. Lay your hand on the head of your offering and slaughter it at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. Aaron’s sons, the priests, will throw the blood on all sides of the Altar. As a Fire-Gift to God from the Peace-Offering, present all the fat that covers or is connected to the entrails, the two kidneys and the fat around them at the loins, and the lobe of the liver that is removed along with the kidneys. Aaron and his sons will burn it on the Altar along with the Whole-Burnt-Offering that is on the wood prepared for the fire: a Fire-Gift, a pleasing fragrance to God.

^6-11“If your Peace-Offering to God comes from the flock, bring a male or female without defect. If you offer a lamb, offer it to God. Lay your hand on the head of your offering and slaughter it at the Tent of Meeting. The sons of Aaron will throw its blood on all sides of the Altar. As a Fire-Gift to God from the Peace-Offering, present its fat, the entire fat tail cut off close to the backbone, all the fat on and connected to the entrails, the two kidneys and the fat around them on the loins, and the lobe of the liver which is removed along with the kidneys. The priest will burn it on the Altar: a meal, a Fire-Gift to God.

^12-16“If the offering is a goat, bring it into the presence of God, lay your hand on its head, and slaughter it in front of the Tent of Meeting. Aaron’s sons will throw the blood on all sides of the Altar. As a Fire-Gift to God present the fat that covers and is connected to the entrails, the two kidneys and the fat which is around them on the loins, and the lobe of the liver which is removed along with the kidneys. The priest will burn them on the Altar: a meal, a Fire-Gift, a pleasing fragrance.

^16-17“All the fat belongs to God. This is the fixed rule down through the generations, wherever you happen to live: Don’t eat the fat; don’t eat the blood. None of it.”

The Absolution-Offering

4 ^1-12God spoke to Moses: “Tell the Israelites, When a person sins unintentionally by straying from any of God’s commands, breaking what must not be broken, if it’s the anointed priest who sins and so brings guilt on the people, he is to bring a bull without defect to God as an Absolution-Offering for the sin he has committed. Have him bring the bull to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting in the presence of God, lay his hand on the bull’s head, and slaughter the bull before God. He is then to take some of the bull’s blood, bring it into the Tent of Meeting, dip his finger in the blood, and sprinkle some of it seven times before God, before the curtain of the Sanctuary. He is to smear some of the blood on the horns of the Altar of Fragrant Incense before God which is in the Tent of Meeting. He is to pour the rest of the bull’s blood out at the base of the Altar of Whole-Burnt-Offering at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. He is to remove all the fat from the bull of the Absolution-Offering, the fat which covers and is connected to the entrails, the two kidneys and the fat that is around them at the loins, and the lobe of the liver which he takes out along with the kidneys—the same procedure as when the fat is removed from the bull of the Peace-Offering. Finally, he is to burn all this on the Altar of Burnt Offering. Everything else—the bull’s hide, meat, head, legs, organs, and guts—he is to take outside the camp to a clean place where the ashes are dumped and is to burn it on a wood fire.

^13-21“If the whole congregation sins unintentionally by straying from one of the commandments of God that must not be broken, they become guilty even though no one is aware of it. When they do become aware of the sin they’ve committed, the congregation must bring a bull as an Absolution-Offering and present it at the Tent of Meeting. The elders of the congregation will lay their hands on the bull’s head in the presence of God and one of them will slaughter it before God. The anointed priest will then bring some of the blood into the Tent of Meeting, dip his finger in the blood, and sprinkle some of it seven times before God in front of the curtain. He will smear some of the blood on the horns of the Altar which is before God in the Tent of Meeting and pour the rest of it at the base of the Altar of Whole-Burnt-Offering at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. He will remove all the fat and burn it on the Altar. He will follow the same procedure with this bull as with the bull for the Absolution-Offering. The priest makes atonement for them and they are forgiven. They then will take the bull outside the camp and burn it just as they burned the first bull. It’s the Absolution-Offering for the congregation.

^22-26“When a ruler sins unintentionally by straying from one of the commands of his God which must not be broken, he is guilty. When he becomes aware of the sin he has committed, he must bring a goat for his offering, a male without any defect, lay his hand on the head of the goat, and slaughter it in the place where they slaughter the Whole-Burnt-Offering in the presence of God—it’s an Absolution-Offering. The priest will then take some of the blood of the Absolution-Offering with his finger, smear it on the horns of the Altar of Whole-Burnt-Offering, and pour the rest at the base of the Altar. He will burn all its fat on the Altar, the same as with the fat of the Peace-Offering.

“The priest makes atonement for him on account of his sin and he’s forgiven.

^27-31“When an ordinary member of the congregation sins unintentionally, straying from one of the commandments of God which must not be broken, he is guilty. When he is made aware of his sin, he shall bring a goat, a female without any defect, and offer it for his sin, lay his hand on the head of the Absolution-Offering, and slaughter it at the place of the Whole-Burnt-Offering. The priest will take some of its blood with his finger, smear it on the horns of the Altar of Whole-Burnt-Offering, and pour the rest at the base of the Altar. Finally, he’ll take out all the fat, the same as with the Peace-Offerings, and burn it on the Altar for a pleasing fragrance to God.

“In this way, the priest makes atonement for him and he’s forgiven.

^32-35“If he brings a lamb for an Absolution-Offering, he shall present a female without any defect, lay his hand on the head of the Absolution-Offering, and slaughter it at the same place they slaughter the Whole-Burnt-Offering. The priest will take some of the blood of the Absolution-Offering with his finger, smear it on the horns of the Altar of Burnt-Offering, and pour the rest at the base of the Altar. He shall remove all the fat, the same as for the lamb of the Peace-Offering. Finally, the priest will burn it on the Altar on top of the gifts to God.

“In this way, the priest makes atonement for him on account of his sin and he’s forgiven.”

5 “If you sin by not stepping up and offering yourself as a witness to something you’ve heard or seen in cases of wrongdoing, you’ll be held responsible.

²“Or if you touch anything ritually unclean, like the carcass of an unclean animal, wild or domestic, or a dead reptile, and you weren’t aware of it at the time, but you’re contaminated and you’re guilty;

³“Or if you touch human uncleanness, any sort of ritually contaminating uncleanness, and you’re not aware of it at the time, but later you realize it and you’re guilty;

⁴“Or if you impulsively swear to do something, whether good or bad—some rash oath that just pops out—and you aren’t aware of what you’ve done at the time, but later you come to realize it and you’re guilty in any of these cases;

^5-6“When you are guilty, immediately confess the sin that you’ve committed and bring as your penalty to God for the sin you have committed a female lamb or goat from the flock for an Absolution-Offering.

“In this way, the priest will make atonement for your sin.

^7-10“If you can’t afford a lamb, bring as your penalty to God for the sin you have committed two doves or two pigeons, one for the Absolution-Offering and the other for the Whole-Burnt-Offering. Bring them to the priest who will first offer the one for the Absolution-Offering: He’ll wring its neck but not sever it, splash some of the blood of the Absolution-Offering against the Altar, and squeeze the rest of it out at the base. It’s an Absolution-Offering. He’ll then take the second bird and offer it as a Whole-Burnt-Offering, following the procedures step-by-step.

“In this way, the priest will make atonement for your sin and you’re forgiven.

^11-12“If you cannot afford the two doves or pigeons, bring two quarts of fine flour for your Absolution-Offering. Don’t put oil or incense on it—it’s an Absolution-Offering. Bring it to the priest; he’ll take a handful from it as a memorial and burn it on the Altar with the gifts for God. It’s an Absolution-Offering.

¹³“The priest will make atonement for you and any of these sins you’ve committed and you’re forgiven. The rest of the offering belongs to the priest, the same as with the Grain-Offering.”

Compensation-Offering

^14-16God spoke to Moses: “When a person betrays his trust and unknowingly sins by straying against any of the holy things of God, he is to bring as his penalty to God a ram without any defect from the flock, the value of the ram assessed in shekels, according to the Sanctuary shekel for a Compensation-Offering. He is to make additional compensation for the sin he has committed against any holy thing by adding twenty percent to the ram and giving it to the priest.

“Thus the priest will make atonement for him with the ram of the Compensation-Offering and he’s forgiven.

^17-18“If anyone sins by breaking any of the commandments of God which must not be broken, but without being aware of it at the time, the moment he does realize his guilt he is held responsible. He is to bring to the priest a ram without any defect, assessed at the value of the Compensation-Offering.

^18-19“Thus the priest will make atonement for him for his error that he was unaware of and he’s forgiven. It is a Compensation-Offering; he was surely guilty before God.”

³¹And he shall take away all the fat thereof, as the fat is taken away from off the sacrifice of peace offerings; and the priest shall burn it upon the altar for a sweet savour unto the Lord; and the priest shall make an atonement for him, and it shall be forgiven him.

³²And if he bring a lamb for a sin offering, he shall bring it a female without blemish.

³³And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the sin offering, and slay it for a sin offering in the place where they kill the burnt offering.

³⁴And the priest shall take of the blood of the sin offering with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and shall pour out all the blood thereof at the bottom of the altar:

³⁵And he shall take away all the fat thereof, as the fat of the lamb is taken away from the sacrifice of the peace offerings; and the priest shall burn them upon the altar, according to the offerings made by fire unto the Lord: and the priest shall make an atonement for his sin that he hath committed, and it shall be forgiven him.

5 And if a soul sin, and hear the voice of swearing, and is a witness, whether he hath seen or known of it; if he do not utter it, then he shall bear his iniquity.

²Or if a soul touch any unclean thing, whether it be a carcase of an unclean beast, or a carcase of unclean cattle, or the carcase of unclean creeping things, and if it be hidden from him; he also shall be unclean, and guilty.

³Or if he touch the uncleanness of man, whatsoever uncleanness it be that a man shall be defiled withal, and it be hid from him; when he knoweth of it, then he shall be guilty.

⁴Or if a soul swear, pronouncing with his lips to do evil, or to do good, whatsoever it be that a man shall pronounce with an oath, and it be hid from him; when he knoweth of it, then he shall be guilty in one of these.

⁵And it shall be, when he shall be guilty in one of these things, that he shall confess that he hath sinned in that thing:

⁶And he shall bring his trespass offering unto the Lord for his sin which he hath sinned, a female from the flock, a lamb or a kid of the goats, for a sin offering; and the priest shall make an atonement for him concerning his sin.

⁷And if he be not able to bring a lamb, then he shall bring for his trespass, which he hath committed, two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, unto the Lord; one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering.

⁸And he shall bring them unto the priest, who shall offer that which is for the sin offering first, and wring off his head from his neck, but shall not divide it asunder:

⁹And he shall sprinkle of the blood of the sin offering upon the side of the altar; and the rest of the blood shall be wrung out at the bottom of the altar: it is a sin offering.

¹⁰And he shall offer the second for a burnt offering, according to the manner: and the priest shall make an atonement for him for his sin which he hath sinned, and it shall be forgiven him.

¹¹But if he be not able to bring two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, then he that sinned shall bring for his offering the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a sin offering; he shall put no oil upon it, neither shall he put any frankincense thereon: for it is a sin offering.

¹²Then shall he bring it to the priest, and the priest shall take his handful of it, even a memorial thereof, and burn it on the altar, according to the offerings made by fire unto the Lord: it is a sin offering.

¹³And the priest shall make an atonement for him as touching his sin that he hath sinned in one of these, and it shall be forgiven him: and the remnant shall be the priest's, as a meat offering.

¹⁴And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

¹⁵If a soul commit a trespass, and sin through ignorance, in the holy things of the Lord; then he shall bring for his trespass unto the Lord a ram without blemish out of the flocks, with thy estimation by shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for a trespass offering.

¹⁶And he shall make amends for the harm that he hath done in the holy thing, and shall add the fifth part thereto, and give it unto the priest: and the priest shall make an atonement for him with the ram of the trespass offering, and it shall be forgiven him.

¹⁷And if a soul sin, and commit any of these things which are forbidden to be done by the commandments of the Lord; though he wist it not, yet is he guilty, and shall bear his iniquity.

¹⁸And he shall bring a ram without blemish out of the flock, with thy estimation, for a trespass offering, unto the priest: and the priest shall make an atonement for him concerning his ignorance wherein he erred and wist it not, and it shall be forgiven him.

¹⁹It is a trespass offering: he hath certainly trespassed against the Lord.
