³⁵ “‘If any of your fellow Israelites become poor^(A) and are unable to support themselves among you, help them^(B) as you would a foreigner and stranger, so they can continue to live among you. ³⁶ Do not take interest^(C) or any profit from them, but fear your God,^(D) so that they may continue to live among you. ³⁷ You must not lend them money at interest^(E) or sell them food at a profit. ³⁸ I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan^(F) and to be your God.^(G)

³⁹ “‘If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and sell themselves to you, do not make them work as slaves.^{(H) 40} They are to be treated as hired workers^(I) or temporary residents among you; they are to work for you until the Year of Jubilee. ⁴¹ Then they and their children are to be released, and they will go back to their own clans and to the property^(J) of their ancestors.^{(K) 42} Because the Israelites are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt,^(L) they must not be sold as slaves. ⁴³ Do not rule over them ruthlessly,^(M) but fear your God.^(N)

⁴⁴ “‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. ⁴⁵ You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. ⁴⁶ You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.

⁴⁷ “‘If a foreigner residing among you becomes rich and any of your fellow Israelites become poor and sell themselves^(O) to the foreigner or to a member of the foreigner’s clan, ⁴⁸ they retain the right of redemption^(P) after they have sold themselves. One of their relatives^(Q) may redeem them: ⁴⁹ An uncle or a cousin or any blood relative in their clan may redeem them. Or if they prosper,^(R) they may redeem themselves. ⁵⁰ They and their buyer are to count the time from the year they sold themselves up to the Year of Jubilee.^(S) The price for their release is to be based on the rate paid to a hired worker^(T) for that number of years. ⁵¹ If many years remain, they must pay for their redemption a larger share of the price paid for them. ⁵² If only a few years remain until the Year of Jubilee, they are to compute that and pay for their redemption accordingly.^{(U) 53} They are to be treated as workers hired from year to year; you must see to it that those to whom they owe service do not rule over them ruthlessly.^(V)

⁵⁴ “‘Even if someone is not redeemed in any of these ways, they and their children are to be released in the Year of Jubilee, ⁵⁵ for the Israelites belong to me as servants. They are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt.^(W) I am the Lord your God.^(X)

Reward for Obedience

26 “‘Do not make idols^(Y) or set up an image^(Z) or a sacred stone^(AA) for yourselves, and do not place a carved stone^(AB) in your land to bow down before it. I am the Lord your God.

² “‘Observe my Sabbaths^(AC) and have reverence for my sanctuary.^(AD) I am the Lord.

³ “‘If you follow my decrees and are careful to obey^(AE) my commands, ⁴ I will send you rain^(AF) in its season,^(AG) and the ground will yield its crops and the trees their fruit.^{(AH) 5} Your threshing will continue until grape harvest and the grape harvest will continue until planting, and you will eat all the food you want^(AI) and live in safety in your land.^(AJ)

⁶ “‘I will grant peace in the land,^(AK) and you will lie down^(AL) and no one will make you afraid.^(AM) I will remove wild beasts^(AN) from the land, and the sword will not pass through your country. ⁷ You will pursue your enemies,^(AO) and they will fall by the sword before you. ⁸ Five^(AP) of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand, and your enemies will fall by the sword before you.^(AQ)

⁹ “‘I will look on you with favor and make you fruitful and increase your numbers,^(AR) and I will keep my covenant^(AS) with you. ¹⁰ You will still be eating last year’s harvest when you will have to move it out to make room for the new.^{(AT) 11} I will put my dwelling place^[a](AU) among you, and I will not abhor you.^{(AV) 12} I will walk^(AW) among you and be your God,^(AX) and you will be my people.^{(AY) 13} I am the Lord your God,^(AZ) who brought you out of Egypt^(BA) so that you would no longer be slaves to the Egyptians; I broke the bars of your yoke^(BB) and enabled you to walk with heads held high.

The Transfiguration^(C)(D)

² After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John^(E) with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. ³ His clothes became dazzling white,^(F) whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. ⁴ And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus.

⁵ Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi,^(G) it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” ⁶ (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.)

⁷ Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud:^(H) “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”^(I)

⁸ Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.

⁹ As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone^(J) what they had seen until the Son of Man^(K) had risen from the dead. ¹⁰ They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what “rising from the dead” meant.

¹¹ And they asked him, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

¹² Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man^(L) must suffer much^(M) and be rejected?^{(N) 13} But I tell you, Elijah has come,^(O) and they have done to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him.”
