(A)The Lord has scorned his altar,
    (B)disowned his sanctuary;
(C)he has delivered into the hand of the enemy
    the walls of her palaces;
(D)they raised a clamor in the house of the Lord
    as on the day of festival.

(E)The Lord determined to lay in ruins
    (F)the wall of the daughter of Zion;
(G)he stretched out the measuring line;
    he did not restrain his hand from destroying;
(H)he caused rampart and wall to lament;
    (I)they languished together.

Her gates have sunk into the ground;
    (J)he has ruined (K)and broken her bars;
(L)her king and princes are among the nations;
    the law is no more,
and (M)her prophets find
    no vision from the Lord.

10 The elders of the daughter of Zion
    (N)sit on the ground (O)in silence;
(P)they have thrown dust on their heads
    and (Q)put on sackcloth;
the young women of Jerusalem
    have bowed their heads to the ground.

11 (R)My eyes are spent with weeping;
    (S)my stomach churns;
(T)my bile is poured out to the ground
    (U)because of the destruction of the daughter of my people,
(V)because infants and babies (W)faint
    in the streets of the city.

12 They cry to their mothers,
    (X)“Where is bread and wine?”
(Y)as they faint like a wounded man
    in the streets of the city,
as their life is poured out
    on their mothers' bosom.

13 What can I say for you, (Z)to what compare you,
    O daughter of Jerusalem?
(AA)What can I liken to you, that I may comfort you,
    O virgin daughter of Zion?
(AB)For your ruin is vast as the sea;
    who can heal you?

14 (AC)Your prophets have seen for you
    false and deceptive visions;
(AD)they have not exposed your iniquity
    to (AE)restore your fortunes,
(AF)but have seen for you (AG)oracles
    that are false and misleading.

15 All who pass along the way
    clap their hands at you;
(AH)they hiss and wag their heads
    at the daughter of Jerusalem:
“Is this the city that was called
    (AI)the perfection of beauty,
    (AJ)the joy of all the earth?”

16 (AK)All your enemies
    rail against you;
they hiss, they gnash their teeth,
    they cry: “We (AL)have swallowed her!
Ah, this is the day we longed for;
    now we have it; (AM)we see it!”

17 The Lord has done what he purposed;
    he has carried out (AN)his word,
which he commanded (AO)long ago;
    (AP)he has thrown down (AQ)without pity;
(AR)he has made the enemy rejoice over you
    and exalted the (AS)might of your foes.

18 Their heart cried to the Lord.
    O (AT)wall of the daughter of Zion,
(AU)let tears stream down like a torrent
    (AV)day and night!
(AW)Give yourself no rest,
    (AX)your eyes no respite!

19 “Arise, (AY)cry out in the night,
    at the beginning of the night watches!
(AZ)Pour out your heart like water
    before the presence of the Lord!
(BA)Lift your hands to him
    for the lives of your children,
(BB)who faint for hunger
    at the head of every street.”

20 Look, O Lord, and see!
    (BC)With whom have you dealt thus?
(BD)Should women eat the fruit of their womb,
    the children of (BE)their tender care?
Should (BF)priest and prophet be killed
    in the sanctuary of the Lord?

21 In the dust of the streets
    (BG)lie the young and the old;
(BH)my young women and my young men
    have fallen by the sword;
(BI)you have killed them in the day of your anger,
    slaughtering (BJ)without pity.

22 You summoned as if to (BK)a festival day
    (BL)my terrors on every side,
(BM)and on the day of the anger of the Lord
    no one escaped or survived;
(BN)those whom I held and raised
    my enemy destroyed.

Great Is Your Faithfulness

(BO)I am the man who has seen affliction
    under the (BP)rod of his wrath;
he has driven and brought me
    (BQ)into darkness without any light;
surely against me he turns his hand
    again and again the whole day long.

He has made my flesh and my skin waste away;
    (BR)he has broken my bones;
(BS)he has besieged and enveloped me
    with (BT)bitterness and tribulation;
(BU)he has made me dwell in darkness
    like the dead of long ago.

(BV)He has walled me about so that (BW)I cannot escape;
    he has made my chains heavy;
though (BX)I call and cry for help,
    he shuts out my prayer;
(BY)he has blocked my ways with blocks of stones;
    he has made my paths crooked.

10 (BZ)He is a bear lying in wait for me,
    a lion in hiding;
11 (CA)he turned aside my steps and (CB)tore me to pieces;
    (CC)he has made me desolate;
12 (CD)he bent his bow (CE)and set me
    as a target for his arrow.

13 He drove into my kidneys
    (CF)the arrows of his quiver;
14 (CG)I have become the laughingstock of all peoples,
    (CH)the object of their taunts all day long.
15 (CI)He has filled me with bitterness;
    he has sated me with (CJ)wormwood.

16 (CK)He has made my teeth grind on gravel,
    and (CL)made me cower in ashes;
17 my soul is bereft of peace;
    I have forgotten what happiness[a] is;
18 (CM)so I say, “My endurance has perished;
    so has my hope from the Lord.”

19 (CN)Remember my affliction and my wanderings,
    (CO)the wormwood and (CP)the gall!
20 My soul continually remembers it
    (CQ)and is bowed down within me.
21 But this I call to mind,
    and (CR)therefore I have hope:

22 (CS)The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;[b]
    (CT)his mercies never come to an end;
23 they are new (CU)every morning;
    (CV)great is your faithfulness.
24 (CW)“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,
    (CX)“therefore I will hope in him.”

25 The Lord is good to those who (CY)wait for him,
    to the soul who seeks him.
26 (CZ)It is good that one should wait quietly
    for the salvation of the Lord.
27 (DA)It is good for a man that he bear
    the yoke (DB)in his youth.

28 Let him (DC)sit alone in silence
    when it is laid on him;
29 (DD)let him put his mouth in the dust—
    there may yet be hope;
30 (DE)let him give his cheek to the one who strikes,
    and let him be filled with insults.

31 (DF)For the Lord will not
    cast off forever,
32 but, though he (DG)cause grief, (DH)he will have compassion
    (DI)according to the abundance of his steadfast love;
33 (DJ)for he does not afflict from his heart
    or (DK)grieve the children of men.

34 To crush underfoot
    all (DL)the prisoners of the earth,
35 (DM)to deny a man justice
    in the presence of the Most High,
36 to subvert a man in his lawsuit,
    (DN)the Lord does not approve.

37 (DO)Who has spoken and it came to pass,
    unless the Lord has commanded it?
38 (DP)Is it not from the mouth of the Most High
    that good and bad come?
39 (DQ)Why should a living man complain,
    a man, about the punishment of his sins?

40 Let us test and examine our ways,
    (DR)and return to the Lord!
41 (DS)Let us lift up our hearts and hands
    to God in heaven:
42 (DT)“We have transgressed and (DU)rebelled,
    and you have not forgiven.

43 “You have wrapped yourself with anger and pursued us,
    (DV)killing without pity;
44 (DW)you have wrapped yourself with a cloud
    so that no prayer can pass through.
45 (DX)You have made us scum and garbage
    among the peoples.

46 (DY)“All our enemies
    open their mouths against us;
47 (DZ)panic and pitfall have come upon us,
    devastation and (EA)destruction;
48 (EB)my eyes flow with rivers of tears
    because of the destruction of the daughter of my people.

49 (EC)“My eyes will flow without ceasing,
    without respite,
50 (ED)until the Lord from heaven
    looks down and sees;
51 my eyes cause me grief
    at the fate of all the daughters of my city.

52 (EE)“I have been hunted (EF)like a bird
    by those who were my enemies (EG)without cause;
53 (EH)they flung me alive into the pit
    (EI)and cast stones on me;
54 (EJ)water closed over my head;
    I said, (EK)‘I am lost.’

55 (EL)“I called on your name, O Lord,
    from the depths of the pit;
56 (EM)you heard my plea, ‘Do not close
    your ear to my cry for help!’
57 (EN)You came near when I called on you;
    you said, (EO)‘Do not fear!’

58 “You have (EP)taken up my cause, (EQ)O Lord;
    you have (ER)redeemed my life.
59 You have seen the wrong done to me, (ES)O Lord;
    judge my cause.
60 You have seen all their vengeance,
    all (ET)their plots against me.

61 (EU)“You have heard their taunts, O Lord,
    all (EV)their plots against me.
62 The lips and thoughts (EW)of my assailants
    are against me all the day long.
63 (EX)Behold their sitting and their rising;
    (EY)I am the object of their taunts.

64 (EZ)“You will repay them,[c] O Lord,
    (FA)according to the work of their hands.
65 You will give them[d] dullness of heart;
    your curse will be[e] on them.
66 You will pursue them[f] in anger and (FB)destroy them
    from under (FC)your heavens, O Lord.”[g]

The Holy Stones Lie Scattered

(FD)How the gold has grown dim,
    how the pure gold is changed!
The holy stones lie scattered
    (FE)at the head of every street.

The precious sons of Zion,
    worth their weight in (FF)fine gold,
how they are regarded as (FG)earthen pots,
    the work of a potter's hands!

Even jackals offer the breast;
    they nurse their young;
but the daughter of my people has become cruel,
    like the ostriches in the wilderness.

The tongue of the nursing infant (FH)sticks
    to the roof of its mouth for thirst;
(FI)the children beg for food,
    but no one gives to them.

Those who once feasted on delicacies
    perish in the streets;
(FJ)those who were brought up in purple
    embrace ash heaps.

(FK)For the chastisement[h] of the daughter of my people has been greater
    than the punishment[i] of Sodom,
(FL)which was overthrown in a moment,
    and no hands were wrung for her.[j]

Her princes were purer than snow,
    whiter than milk;
their bodies were more ruddy than coral,
    the beauty of their form[k] was like sapphire.[l]

(FM)Now their face is blacker than soot;
    they are not recognized in the streets;
their skin has shriveled on their bones;
    it has become as dry as wood.

Happier were the victims of the sword
    than the victims of hunger,
who wasted away, pierced
    by lack of the fruits of the field.

10 (FN)The hands of (FO)compassionate women
    (FP)have boiled their own children;
(FQ)they became their food
    during the destruction of the daughter of my people.

11 (FR)The Lord gave full vent to his wrath;
    he poured out his hot anger,
and (FS)he kindled a fire in Zion
    that consumed its foundations.

12 (FT)The kings of the earth did not believe,
    nor any of the inhabitants of the world,
that foe or enemy could enter
    the gates of Jerusalem.

13 This was for (FU)the sins of her prophets
    and (FV)the iniquities of her priests,
who shed in the midst of her
    the blood of the righteous.

14 (FW)They wandered, blind, through the streets;
    they were so defiled with blood
(FX)that no one was able to touch
    their garments.

15 “Away! (FY)Unclean!” people cried at them.
    “Away! Away! Do not touch!”
So they became fugitives and wanderers;
    people said among the nations,
    “They shall stay with us no longer.”

16 (FZ)The Lord himself[m] has scattered them;
    he will regard them no more;
(GA)no honor was shown to the priests,
    (GB)no favor to the elders.

17 (GC)Our eyes failed, ever watching
    (GD)vainly for help;
in our watching we watched
    for (GE)a nation which could not save.

18 (GF)They dogged our steps
    so that we could not walk in our streets;
(GG)our end drew near; our days were numbered,
    for our end had come.

19 Our pursuers were (GH)swifter
    than the eagles in the heavens;
they chased us on the mountains;
    they lay in wait for us in the wilderness.

20 (GI)The breath of our nostrils, (GJ)the Lord's anointed,
    was captured (GK)in their pits,
of whom we said, (GL)“Under his shadow
    we shall live among the nations.”

21 (GM)Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom,
    you who dwell in (GN)the land of Uz;
but to you also (GO)the cup shall pass;
    you shall become drunk and strip yourself bare.

22 (GP)The punishment of your iniquity, O daughter of Zion, is accomplished;
    he will keep you in exile no longer;[n]
but (GQ)your iniquity, O daughter of Edom, he will punish;
    he will uncover your sins.

Restore Us to Yourself, O Lord

(GR)Remember, O Lord, what has befallen us;
    look, and see (GS)our disgrace!
(GT)Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers,
    our homes to foreigners.
We have become orphans, fatherless;
    our mothers are like widows.
We must pay for the water we drink;
    the wood we get must be bought.
(GU)Our pursuers are at our necks;
    we are weary; we are given no rest.
We have given the hand to (GV)Egypt, and to (GW)Assyria,
    to get bread enough.
Our fathers sinned, and are no more;
    (GX)and we bear their iniquities.
(GY)Slaves rule over us;
    there is none to deliver us from their hand.
(GZ)We get our bread at the peril of our lives,
    because of the sword in the wilderness.
10 (HA)Our skin is hot as an oven
    with (HB)the burning heat of famine.
11 Women are raped in Zion,
    young women in the towns of Judah.
12 (HC)Princes are hung up by their hands;
    (HD)no respect is shown to the elders.
13 Young men are compelled to (HE)grind at the mill,
    and boys stagger (HF)under loads of wood.
14 (HG)The old men have left the city gate,
    the young men (HH)their music.
15 (HI)The joy of our hearts has ceased;
    (HJ)our dancing has been turned to mourning.
16 (HK)The crown has fallen from our head;
    woe to us, for we have sinned!
17 For this (HL)our heart has become sick,
    for these things (HM)our eyes have grown dim,
18 for Mount Zion which lies desolate;
    (HN)jackals prowl over it.
19 (HO)But you, O Lord, reign forever;
    your throne endures to all generations.
20 (HP)Why do you forget us forever,
    why do you forsake us for so many days?
21 (HQ)Restore us to yourself, O Lord, that we may be restored!
    Renew our days as of old—
22 (HR)unless you have utterly rejected us,
    and you remain exceedingly angry with us.

    for what their hands have done.(FD)
65 Put a veil over their hearts,(FE)
    and may your curse be on them!
66 Pursue(FF) them in anger and destroy them
    from under the heavens of the Lord.

[c]How the gold has lost its luster,
    the fine gold become dull!
The sacred gems are scattered
    at every street corner.(FG)

How the precious children of Zion,(FH)
    once worth their weight in gold,
are now considered as pots of clay,
    the work of a potter’s hands!

Even jackals offer their breasts
    to nurse their young,
but my people have become heartless
    like ostriches in the desert.(FI)

Because of thirst(FJ) the infant’s tongue
    sticks to the roof of its mouth;(FK)
the children beg for bread,
    but no one gives it to them.(FL)

Those who once ate delicacies
    are destitute in the streets.
Those brought up in royal purple(FM)
    now lie on ash heaps.(FN)

The punishment of my people
    is greater than that of Sodom,(FO)
which was overthrown in a moment
    without a hand turned to help her.

Their princes were brighter than snow
    and whiter than milk,
their bodies more ruddy than rubies,
    their appearance like lapis lazuli.

But now they are blacker(FP) than soot;
    they are not recognized in the streets.
Their skin has shriveled on their bones;(FQ)
    it has become as dry as a stick.

Those killed by the sword are better off
    than those who die of famine;(FR)
racked with hunger, they waste away
    for lack of food from the field.(FS)

10 With their own hands compassionate women
    have cooked their own children,(FT)
who became their food
    when my people were destroyed.

11 The Lord has given full vent to his wrath;(FU)
    he has poured out(FV) his fierce anger.(FW)
He kindled a fire(FX) in Zion
    that consumed her foundations.(FY)

12 The kings of the earth did not believe,
    nor did any of the peoples of the world,
that enemies and foes could enter
    the gates of Jerusalem.(FZ)

13 But it happened because of the sins of her prophets
    and the iniquities of her priests,(GA)
who shed within her
    the blood(GB) of the righteous.

14 Now they grope through the streets
    as if they were blind.(GC)
They are so defiled with blood(GD)
    that no one dares to touch their garments.

15 “Go away! You are unclean!” people cry to them.
    “Away! Away! Don’t touch us!”
When they flee and wander(GE) about,
    people among the nations say,
    “They can stay here no longer.”(GF)

16 The Lord himself has scattered them;
    he no longer watches over them.(GG)
The priests are shown no honor,
    the elders(GH) no favor.(GI)

17 Moreover, our eyes failed,
    looking in vain(GJ) for help;(GK)
from our towers we watched
    for a nation(GL) that could not save us.

18 People stalked us at every step,
    so we could not walk in our streets.
Our end was near, our days were numbered,
    for our end had come.(GM)

19 Our pursuers were swifter
    than eagles(GN) in the sky;
they chased us(GO) over the mountains
    and lay in wait for us in the desert.(GP)

20 The Lord’s anointed,(GQ) our very life breath,
    was caught in their traps.(GR)
We thought that under his shadow(GS)
    we would live among the nations.

21 Rejoice and be glad, Daughter Edom,
    you who live in the land of Uz.(GT)
But to you also the cup(GU) will be passed;
    you will be drunk and stripped naked.(GV)

22 Your punishment will end, Daughter Zion;(GW)
    he will not prolong your exile.
But he will punish your sin, Daughter Edom,
    and expose your wickedness.(GX)

Remember, Lord, what has happened to us;
    look, and see our disgrace.(GY)
Our inheritance(GZ) has been turned over to strangers,(HA)
    our homes(HB) to foreigners.(HC)
We have become fatherless,
    our mothers are widows.(HD)
We must buy the water we drink;(HE)
    our wood can be had only at a price.(HF)
Those who pursue us are at our heels;
    we are weary(HG) and find no rest.(HH)
We submitted to Egypt and Assyria(HI)
    to get enough bread.
Our ancestors(HJ) sinned and are no more,
    and we bear their punishment.(HK)
Slaves(HL) rule over us,
    and there is no one to free us from their hands.(HM)
We get our bread at the risk of our lives
    because of the sword in the desert.
10 Our skin is hot as an oven,
    feverish from hunger.(HN)
11 Women have been violated(HO) in Zion,
    and virgins in the towns of Judah.
12 Princes have been hung up by their hands;
    elders(HP) are shown no respect.(HQ)
13 Young men toil at the millstones;
    boys stagger under loads of wood.
14 The elders are gone from the city gate;
    the young men have stopped their music.(HR)
15 Joy is gone from our hearts;
    our dancing has turned to mourning.(HS)
16 The crown(HT) has fallen from our head.(HU)
    Woe to us, for we have sinned!(HV)
17 Because of this our hearts(HW) are faint,(HX)
    because of these things our eyes(HY) grow dim(HZ)
18 for Mount Zion,(IA) which lies desolate,(IB)
    with jackals prowling over it.

19 You, Lord, reign forever;(IC)
    your throne endures(ID) from generation to generation.
20 Why do you always forget us?(IE)
    Why do you forsake(IF) us so long?
21 Restore(IG) us to yourself, Lord, that we may return;
    renew our days as of old
22 unless you have utterly rejected us(IH)
    and are angry with us beyond measure.(II)
