27 But Manasseh did not(A) drive out the people of Beth Shan or Taanach or Dor(B) or Ibleam(C) or Megiddo(D) and their surrounding settlements, for the Canaanites(E) were determined to live in that land. 28 When Israel became strong, they pressed the Canaanites into forced labor but never drove them out completely.(F) 29 Nor did Ephraim(G) drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer,(H) but the Canaanites continued to live there among them.(I) 30 Neither did Zebulun drive out the Canaanites living in Kitron or Nahalol, so these Canaanites lived among them, but Zebulun did subject them to forced labor. 31 Nor did Asher(J) drive out those living in Akko or Sidon(K) or Ahlab or Akzib(L) or Helbah or Aphek(M) or Rehob.(N) 32 The Asherites lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land because they did not drive them out. 33 Neither did Naphtali drive out those living in Beth Shemesh(O) or Beth Anath(P); but the Naphtalites too lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land, and those living in Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath became forced laborers for them. 34 The Amorites(Q) confined the Danites(R) to the hill country, not allowing them to come down into the plain.(S) 35 And the Amorites were determined also to hold out in Mount Heres,(T) Aijalon(U) and Shaalbim,(V) but when the power of the tribes of Joseph increased, they too were pressed into forced labor. 36 The boundary of the Amorites was from Scorpion Pass(W) to Sela(X) and beyond.(Y)

The Angel of the Lord at Bokim

The angel of the Lord(Z) went up from Gilgal(AA) to Bokim(AB) and said, “I brought you up out of Egypt(AC) and led you into the land I swore to give to your ancestors.(AD) I said, ‘I will never break my covenant with you,(AE) and you shall not make a covenant with the people of this land,(AF) but you shall break down their altars.(AG)’ Yet you have disobeyed(AH) me. Why have you done this? And I have also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you;(AI) they will become traps(AJ) for you, and their gods will become snares(AK) to you.’”

When the angel of the Lord had spoken these things to all the Israelites, the people wept aloud,(AL) and they called that place Bokim.[a](AM) There they offered sacrifices to the Lord.

Incomplete Conquest of the Land

27 (A)However, Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shean and its villages, or (B)Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of (C)Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; for the Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land. 28 And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites [a]under tribute, but did not completely drive them out.

29 (D)Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer; so the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

30 Nor did (E)Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron or the inhabitants of Nahalol; so the Canaanites dwelt among them, and [b]were put under tribute.

31 (F)Nor did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Acco or the inhabitants of Sidon, or of Ahlab, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik, or Rehob. 32 So the Asherites (G)dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.

33 (H)Nor did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh or the inhabitants of Beth Anath; but they dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath were put under tribute to them.

34 And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountains, for they would not allow them to come down to the valley; 35 and the Amorites were determined to dwell in Mount Heres, (I)in Aijalon, and in [c]Shaalbim; yet when the strength of the house of Joseph became greater, they [d]were put under tribute.

36 Now the boundary of the Amorites was (J)from the Ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela, and upward.

Israel’s Disobedience

Then the Angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said: (K)“I led you up from Egypt and (L)brought you to the land of which I swore to your fathers; and (M)I said, ‘I will never break My covenant with you. And (N)you shall make no [e]covenant with the inhabitants of this land; (O)you shall tear down their altars.’ (P)But you have not obeyed My voice. Why have you done this? Therefore I also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you; but they shall be (Q)thorns[f] in your side, and (R)their gods shall [g]be a (S)snare to you.’ ” So it was, when the Angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voices and wept.

Then they called the name of that place [h]Bochim; and they sacrificed there to the Lord.

Failure to Complete the Conquest

27 (A)Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages, for the Canaanites persisted in dwelling in that land. 28 When Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not drive them out completely.

29 (B)And Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer, so the Canaanites lived in Gezer among them.

30 Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, or the inhabitants of (C)Nahalol, so the Canaanites lived among them, but became subject to forced labor.

31 (D)Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, or the inhabitants of Sidon or of Ahlab or of Achzib or of Helbah or of Aphik or of Rehob, 32 so the Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land, for they did not drive them out.

33 Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of (E)Beth-shemesh, or the inhabitants of Beth-anath, so they lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless, the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became subject to forced labor for them.

34 (F)The Amorites pressed the people of Dan back into the hill country, for they did not allow them to come down to the plain. 35 The Amorites persisted in dwelling in Mount Heres, (G)in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim, but the hand of the house of Joseph rested heavily on them, and they became subject to forced labor. 36 And the border of the Amorites ran from (H)the ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela and upward.

Israel's Disobedience

Now the angel of the Lord went up from Gilgal to (I)Bochim. And he said, “I brought you up from Egypt and brought you into the land that I swore to give to your fathers. I said, (J)‘I will never break my covenant with you, (K)and you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; (L)you shall break down their altars.’ But you have not obeyed my voice. What is this you have done? So now I say, (M)I will not drive them out before you, but they shall become (N)thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare to you.” As soon as the angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the people of Israel, the people lifted up their voices and wept. And they called the name of that place Bochim.[a] And they sacrificed there to the Lord.

Footnotes

  1. Judges 2:5 Bochim means weepers

27 The tribe of Manasseh failed to drive out the people living in Beth-shan,[a] Taanach, Dor, Ibleam, Megiddo, and all their surrounding settlements, because the Canaanites were determined to stay in that region. 28 When the Israelites grew stronger, they forced the Canaanites to work as slaves, but they never did drive them completely out of the land.

29 The tribe of Ephraim failed to drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer, so the Canaanites continued to live there among them.

30 The tribe of Zebulun failed to drive out the residents of Kitron and Nahalol, so the Canaanites continued to live among them. But the Canaanites were forced to work as slaves for the people of Zebulun.

31 The tribe of Asher failed to drive out the residents of Acco, Sidon, Ahlab, Aczib, Helbah, Aphik, and Rehob. 32 Instead, the people of Asher moved in among the Canaanites, who controlled the land, for they failed to drive them out.

33 Likewise, the tribe of Naphtali failed to drive out the residents of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath. Instead, they moved in among the Canaanites, who controlled the land. Nevertheless, the people of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath were forced to work as slaves for the people of Naphtali.

34 As for the tribe of Dan, the Amorites forced them back into the hill country and would not let them come down into the plains. 35 The Amorites were determined to stay in Mount Heres, Aijalon, and Shaalbim, but when the descendants of Joseph became stronger, they forced the Amorites to work as slaves. 36 The boundary of the Amorites ran from Scorpion Pass[b] to Sela and continued upward from there.

The Lord’s Messenger Comes to Bokim

The angel of the Lord went up from Gilgal to Bokim and said to the Israelites, “I brought you out of Egypt into this land that I swore to give your ancestors, and I said I would never break my covenant with you. For your part, you were not to make any covenants with the people living in this land; instead, you were to destroy their altars. But you disobeyed my command. Why did you do this? So now I declare that I will no longer drive out the people living in your land. They will be thorns in your sides,[c] and their gods will be a constant temptation to you.”

When the angel of the Lord finished speaking to all the Israelites, the people wept loudly. So they called the place Bokim (which means “weeping”), and they offered sacrifices there to the Lord.
