²⁶ Then ^(A)all the sons of Israel and all the people went up and came to Bethel, and they wept and remained there before the Lord, and fasted that day until evening. And they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord.

⁶ So they gathered to Mizpah, and drew water and ^(A)poured it out before the Lord, and ^(B)fasted on that day and said there, “^(C)We have sinned against the Lord.” And Samuel judged the sons of Israel at Mizpah.

³ Jehoshaphat was afraid and ^[a](A)turned his attention to seek the Lord; and he ^(B)proclaimed a period of fasting throughout Judah.

¹⁶ “Go, gather all the Jews who are found in Susa, and fast for me; ^(A)do not eat or drink for ^(B)three days, night or day. I and my attendants also will fast in the same way. And then I will go in to the king, which is not in accordance with the law; and if I perish, I perish.”

Starvation and Drought

⁵ Then the people of Nineveh believed in God; and they called a ^(A)fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them.
