14 She may not eat anything that comes from the vine, (A)nor may she drink wine or similar drink, nor eat anything unclean. All that I commanded her let her observe.”

15 Then Manoah said to the Angel of the Lord, “Please (B)let us detain You, and we will prepare a young goat for You.”

16 And the Angel of the Lord said to Manoah, “Though you detain Me, I will not eat your food. But if you offer a burnt offering, you must offer it to the Lord.” (For Manoah did not know He was the Angel of the Lord.)

17 Then Manoah said to the Angel of the Lord, “What is Your name, that when Your words come to pass we may honor You?”

18 And the Angel of the Lord said to him, (C)“Why do you ask My name, seeing it is wonderful?”

19 So Manoah took the young goat with the grain offering, (D)and offered it upon the rock to the Lord. And He did a wondrous thing while Manoah and his wife looked on— 20 it happened as the flame went up toward heaven from the altar—the Angel of the Lord ascended in the flame of the altar! When Manoah and his wife saw this, they (E)fell on their faces to the ground. 21 When the Angel of the Lord appeared no more to Manoah and his wife, (F)then Manoah knew that He was the Angel of the Lord.

22 And Manoah said to his wife, (G)“We shall surely die, because we have seen God!”

23 But his wife said to him, “If the Lord had desired to kill us, He would not have accepted a burnt offering and a grain offering from our hands, nor would He have shown us all these things, nor would He have told us such things as these at this time.”

24 So the woman bore a son and called his name (H)Samson; and (I)the child grew, and the Lord blessed him. 25 (J)And the Spirit of the Lord began to move upon him at [a]Mahaneh Dan (K)between Zorah and (L)Eshtaol.

Samson’s Philistine Wife

14 Now Samson went down (M)to Timnah, and (N)saw a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines. So he went up and told his father and mother, saying, “I have seen a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines; now therefore, (O)get her for me as a wife.”

Then his father and mother said to him, “Is there no woman among the daughters of (P)your brethren, or among all my people, that you must go and get a wife from the (Q)uncircumcised Philistines?”

And Samson said to his father, “Get her for me, for [b]she pleases me well.”

But his father and mother did not know that it was (R)of the Lord—that He was seeking an occasion to move against the Philistines. For at that time (S)the Philistines had dominion over Israel.

So Samson went down to Timnah with his father and mother, and came to the vineyards of Timnah.

Now to his surprise, a young lion came roaring against him. And (T)the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and he tore the lion apart as one would have torn apart a young goat, though he had nothing in his hand. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done.

Then he went down and talked with the woman; and she pleased Samson well. After some time, when he returned to get her, he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion. And behold, a swarm of bees and honey were in the carcass of the lion. He took some of it in his hands and went along, eating. When he came to his father and mother, he gave some to them, and they also ate. But he did not tell them that he had taken the honey out of the (U)carcass of the lion.

10 So his father went down to the woman. And Samson gave a feast there, for young men used to do so. 11 And it happened, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions to be with him.

12 Then Samson said to them, “Let me (V)pose a riddle to you. If you can correctly solve and explain it to me (W)within the seven days of the feast, then I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty (X)changes of clothing. 13 But if you cannot explain it to me, then you shall give me thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothing.”

And they said to him, (Y)“Pose your riddle, that we may hear it.”

14 So he said to them:

“Out of the eater came something to eat,
And out of the strong came something sweet.”

Now for three days they could not explain the riddle.

15 But it came to pass on the [c]seventh day that they said to Samson’s wife, (Z)“Entice your husband, that he may explain the riddle to us, (AA)or else we will burn you and your father’s house with fire. Have you invited us in order to take what is ours? Is that not so?

16 Then Samson’s wife wept on him, and said, (AB)“You only hate me! You do not love me! You have posed a riddle to the sons of my people, but you have not explained it to me.”

And he said to her, “Look, I have not explained it to my father or my mother; so should I explain it to you?” 17 Now she had wept on him the seven days while their feast lasted. And it happened on the seventh day that he told her, because she pressed him so much. Then she explained the riddle to the sons of her people. 18 So the men of the city said to him on the seventh day before the sun went down:

“What is sweeter than honey?
And what is stronger than a lion?”

And he said to them:

“If you had not plowed with my heifer,
You would not have solved my riddle!”

19 Then (AC)the Spirit of the Lord came upon him mightily, and he went down to Ashkelon and killed thirty of their men, took their apparel, and gave the changes of clothing to those who had explained the riddle. So his anger was aroused, and he went back up to his father’s house. 20 And Samson’s wife (AD)was given to his companion, who had been (AE)his best man.

Samson Defeats the Philistines

15 After a while, in the time of wheat harvest, it happened that Samson visited his wife with a (AF)young goat. And he said, “Let me go in to my wife, into her room.” But her father would not permit him to go in.

Her father said, “I really thought that you thoroughly (AG)hated her; therefore I gave her to your companion. Is not her younger sister better than she? Please, take her instead.”

And Samson said to them, “This time I shall be blameless regarding the Philistines if I harm them!” Then Samson went and caught three hundred foxes; and he took torches, turned the foxes tail to tail, and put a torch between each pair of tails. When he had set the torches on fire, he let the foxes go into the standing grain of the Philistines, and burned up both the shocks and the standing grain, as well as the vineyards and olive groves.

Then the Philistines said, “Who has done this?”

And they answered, “Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite, because he has taken his wife and given her to his companion.” (AH)So the Philistines came up and burned her and her father with fire.

Samson said to them, “Since you would do a thing like this, I will surely take revenge on you, and after that I will cease.” So he attacked them hip and thigh with a great slaughter; then he went down and dwelt in the cleft of the rock of (AI)Etam.

Now the Philistines went up, encamped in Judah, and deployed themselves (AJ)against Lehi. 10 And the men of Judah said, “Why have you come up against us?”

So they answered, “We have come up to [d]arrest Samson, to do to him as he has done to us.”

11 Then three thousand men of Judah went down to the cleft of the rock of Etam, and said to Samson, “Do you not know that the Philistines (AK)rule over us? What is this you have done to us?”

And he said to them, “As they did to me, so I have done to them.”

14 She must not eat anything that comes from the grapevine, nor drink any wine or other fermented drink(A) nor eat anything unclean.(B) She must do everything I have commanded her.”

15 Manoah said to the angel of the Lord, “We would like you to stay until we prepare a young goat(C) for you.”

16 The angel of the Lord replied, “Even though you detain me, I will not eat any of your food. But if you prepare a burnt offering,(D) offer it to the Lord.” (Manoah did not realize(E) that it was the angel of the Lord.)

17 Then Manoah inquired of the angel of the Lord, “What is your name,(F) so that we may honor you when your word comes true?”

18 He replied, “Why do you ask my name?(G) It is beyond understanding.[a] 19 Then Manoah took a young goat, together with the grain offering, and sacrificed it on a rock(H) to the Lord. And the Lord did an amazing thing while Manoah and his wife watched: 20 As the flame(I) blazed up from the altar toward heaven, the angel of the Lord ascended in the flame. Seeing this, Manoah and his wife fell with their faces to the ground.(J) 21 When the angel of the Lord did not show himself again to Manoah and his wife, Manoah realized(K) that it was the angel of the Lord.

22 “We are doomed(L) to die!” he said to his wife. “We have seen(M) God!”

23 But his wife answered, “If the Lord had meant to kill us, he would not have accepted a burnt offering and grain offering from our hands, nor shown us all these things or now told us this.”(N)

24 The woman gave birth to a boy and named him Samson.(O) He grew(P) and the Lord blessed him,(Q) 25 and the Spirit of the Lord began to stir(R) him while he was in Mahaneh Dan,(S) between Zorah and Eshtaol.

Samson’s Marriage

14 Samson(T) went down to Timnah(U) and saw there a young Philistine woman. When he returned, he said to his father and mother, “I have seen a Philistine woman in Timnah; now get her for me as my wife.”(V)

His father and mother replied, “Isn’t there an acceptable woman among your relatives or among all our people?(W) Must you go to the uncircumcised(X) Philistines to get a wife?(Y)

But Samson said to his father, “Get her for me. She’s the right one for me.” (His parents did not know that this was from the Lord,(Z) who was seeking an occasion to confront the Philistines;(AA) for at that time they were ruling over Israel.)(AB)

Samson went down to Timnah together with his father and mother. As they approached the vineyards of Timnah, suddenly a young lion came roaring toward him. The Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him(AC) so that he tore the lion apart(AD) with his bare hands as he might have torn a young goat. But he told neither his father nor his mother what he had done. Then he went down and talked with the woman, and he liked her.

Some time later, when he went back to marry her, he turned aside to look at the lion’s carcass, and in it he saw a swarm of bees and some honey. He scooped out the honey with his hands and ate as he went along. When he rejoined his parents, he gave them some, and they too ate it. But he did not tell them that he had taken the honey from the lion’s carcass.

10 Now his father went down to see the woman. And there Samson held a feast,(AE) as was customary for young men. 11 When the people saw him, they chose thirty men to be his companions.

12 “Let me tell you a riddle,(AF)” Samson said to them. “If you can give me the answer within the seven days of the feast,(AG) I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothes.(AH) 13 If you can’t tell me the answer, you must give me thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothes.”

“Tell us your riddle,” they said. “Let’s hear it.”

14 He replied,

“Out of the eater, something to eat;
out of the strong, something sweet.”(AI)

For three days they could not give the answer.

15 On the fourth[b] day, they said to Samson’s wife, “Coax(AJ) your husband into explaining the riddle for us, or we will burn you and your father’s household to death.(AK) Did you invite us here to steal our property?”

16 Then Samson’s wife threw herself on him, sobbing, “You hate me! You don’t really love me.(AL) You’ve given my people a riddle, but you haven’t told me the answer.”

“I haven’t even explained it to my father or mother,” he replied, “so why should I explain it to you?” 17 She cried the whole seven days(AM) of the feast. So on the seventh day he finally told her, because she continued to press him. She in turn explained the riddle to her people.

18 Before sunset on the seventh day the men of the town said to him,

“What is sweeter than honey?
What is stronger than a lion?”(AN)

Samson said to them,

“If you had not plowed with my heifer,
you would not have solved my riddle.”

19 Then the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him.(AO) He went down to Ashkelon,(AP) struck down thirty of their men, stripped them of everything and gave their clothes to those who had explained the riddle. Burning with anger,(AQ) he returned to his father’s home. 20 And Samson’s wife was given to one of his companions(AR) who had attended him at the feast.

Samson’s Vengeance on the Philistines

15 Later on, at the time of wheat harvest,(AS) Samson(AT) took a young goat(AU) and went to visit his wife. He said, “I’m going to my wife’s room.”(AV) But her father would not let him go in.

“I was so sure you hated her,” he said, “that I gave her to your companion.(AW) Isn’t her younger sister more attractive? Take her instead.”

Samson said to them, “This time I have a right to get even with the Philistines; I will really harm them.” So he went out and caught three hundred foxes(AX) and tied them tail to tail in pairs. He then fastened a torch(AY) to every pair of tails, lit the torches(AZ) and let the foxes loose in the standing grain of the Philistines. He burned up the shocks(BA) and standing grain, together with the vineyards and olive groves.

When the Philistines asked, “Who did this?” they were told, “Samson, the Timnite’s son-in-law, because his wife was given to his companion.(BB)

So the Philistines went up and burned her(BC) and her father to death.(BD) Samson said to them, “Since you’ve acted like this, I swear that I won’t stop until I get my revenge on you.” He attacked them viciously and slaughtered many of them. Then he went down and stayed in a cave in the rock(BE) of Etam.(BF)

The Philistines went up and camped in Judah, spreading out near Lehi.(BG) 10 The people of Judah asked, “Why have you come to fight us?”

“We have come to take Samson prisoner,” they answered, “to do to him as he did to us.”

11 Then three thousand men from Judah went down to the cave in the rock of Etam and said to Samson, “Don’t you realize that the Philistines are rulers over us?(BH) What have you done to us?”

He answered, “I merely did to them what they did to me.”
