⁵ Now I want ^(A)to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that ^(B)Jesus, who saved^[a] a people out of the land of Egypt, ^(C)afterward destroyed those who did not believe.

⁵¹ And on that very day the ^(A)Lord brought the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their ^(B)hosts.

²¹ And ^(A)the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night.

God Promises Judgment

²⁰ Then the Lord said, “I have pardoned, ^(A)according to your word. ²¹ But truly, as I live, and as all ^(B)the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord, ^22 (C)none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the test these ^(D)ten times and have not obeyed my voice, ^23 (E)shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. And none of those who despised me shall see it. ²⁴ But my servant ^(F)Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has ^(G)followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it.

The Penalty for Israel's Rebellion

³⁴ “And the Lord heard your words and was angered, and he swore, ^35 (A)‘Not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land that I swore to give to your fathers, ^36 (B)except Caleb the son of Jephunneh. He shall see it, and to him and to his children I will give the land on which he has trodden, because he has wholly followed the Lord!’ ³⁷ Even with me ^(C)the Lord was angry on your account and said, ‘You also shall not go in there. ^38 (D)Joshua the son of Nun, ^(E)who stands before you, he shall enter. ^(F)Encourage him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it. ³⁹ And as for ^(G)your little ones, who you said would become a prey, and your children, who today ^(H)have no knowledge of good or evil, they shall go in there. And to them I will give it, and they shall possess it.
