¹³ They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?”^(A)

“They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.”^{(B) 14} At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there,^(C) but she did not realize that it was Jesus.^(D)

¹⁵ He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?^(E) Who is it you are looking for?”

Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”

¹⁶ Jesus said to her, “Mary.”

She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic,^(F) “Rabboni!”^(G) (which means “Teacher”).

¹⁷ Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers^(H) and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father^(I) and your Father, to my God and your God.’”

¹⁸ Mary Magdalene^(J) went to the disciples^(K) with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.

²⁷ Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”^(A)

²⁸ Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

²⁹ Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed;^(B) blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”^(C)

The Purpose of John’s Gospel

³⁰ Jesus performed many other signs^(D) in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.^{(E) 31} But these are written that you may believe^[a](F) that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God,^(G) and that by believing you may have life in his name.^(H)
