Jesus, the True Vine

15 “I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.

“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned. But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted! When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father.

“I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. 10 When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. 11 I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! 12 This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. 13 There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me. 16 You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name. 17 This is my command: Love each other.

The World’s Hatred

18 “If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first. 19 The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world. I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you. 20 Do you remember what I told you? ‘A slave is not greater than the master.’ Since they persecuted me, naturally they will persecute you. And if they had listened to me, they would listen to you. 21 They will do all this to you because of me, for they have rejected the one who sent me. 22 They would not be guilty if I had not come and spoken to them. But now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 Anyone who hates me also hates my Father. 24 If I hadn’t done such miraculous signs among them that no one else could do, they would not be guilty. But as it is, they have seen everything I did, yet they still hate me and my Father. 25 This fulfills what is written in their Scriptures[a]: ‘They hated me without cause.’

26 “But I will send you the Advocate[b]—the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about me. 27 And you must also testify about me because you have been with me from the beginning of my ministry.

16 “I have told you these things so that you won’t abandon your faith. For you will be expelled from the synagogues, and the time is coming when those who kill you will think they are doing a holy service for God. This is because they have never known the Father or me. Yes, I’m telling you these things now, so that when they happen, you will remember my warning. I didn’t tell you earlier because I was going to be with you for a while longer.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and not one of you is asking where I am going. Instead, you grieve because of what I’ve told you. But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate[c] won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment. The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me. 10 Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more. 11 Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged.

12 “There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. 14 He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.’

Sadness Will Be Turned to Joy

16 “In a little while you won’t see me anymore. But a little while after that, you will see me again.”

17 Some of the disciples asked each other, “What does he mean when he says, ‘In a little while you won’t see me, but then you will see me,’ and ‘I am going to the Father’? 18 And what does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand.”

19 Jesus realized they wanted to ask him about it, so he said, “Are you asking yourselves what I meant? I said in a little while you won’t see me, but a little while after that you will see me again. 20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn over what is going to happen to me, but the world will rejoice. You will grieve, but your grief will suddenly turn to wonderful joy. 21 It will be like a woman suffering the pains of labor. When her child is born, her anguish gives way to joy because she has brought a new baby into the world. 22 So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again; then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy. 23 At that time you won’t need to ask me for anything. I tell you the truth, you will ask the Father directly, and he will grant your request because you use my name. 24 You haven’t done this before. Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy.

25 “I have spoken of these matters in figures of speech, but soon I will stop speaking figuratively and will tell you plainly all about the Father. 26 Then you will ask in my name. I’m not saying I will ask the Father on your behalf, 27 for the Father himself loves you dearly because you love me and believe that I came from God.[d] 28 Yes, I came from the Father into the world, and now I will leave the world and return to the Father.”

29 Then his disciples said, “At last you are speaking plainly and not figuratively. 30 Now we understand that you know everything, and there’s no need to question you. From this we believe that you came from God.”

31 Jesus asked, “Do you finally believe? 32 But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when you will be scattered, each one going his own way, leaving me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me. 33 I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

The Prayer of Jesus

17 After saying all these things, Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so he can give glory back to you. For you have given him authority over everyone. He gives eternal life to each one you have given him. And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth. I brought glory to you here on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. Now, Father, bring me into the glory we shared before the world began.

“I have revealed you[e] to the ones you gave me from this world. They were always yours. You gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything I have is a gift from you, for I have passed on to them the message you gave me. They accepted it and know that I came from you, and they believe you sent me.

“My prayer is not for the world, but for those you have given me, because they belong to you. 10 All who are mine belong to you, and you have given them to me, so they bring me glory. 11 Now I am departing from the world; they are staying in this world, but I am coming to you. Holy Father, you have given me your name;[f] now protect them by the power of your name so that they will be united just as we are. 12 During my time here, I protected them by the power of the name you gave me.[g] I guarded them so that not one was lost, except the one headed for destruction, as the Scriptures foretold.

13 “Now I am coming to you. I told them many things while I was with them in this world so they would be filled with my joy. 14 I have given them your word. And the world hates them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. 15 I’m not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one. 16 They do not belong to this world any more than I do. 17 Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth. 18 Just as you sent me into the world, I am sending them into the world. 19 And I give myself as a holy sacrifice for them so they can be made holy by your truth.

20 “I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. 21 I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.

22 “I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one. 23 I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me. 24 Father, I want these whom you have given me to be with me where I am. Then they can see all the glory you gave me because you loved me even before the world began!

25 “O righteous Father, the world doesn’t know you, but I do; and these disciples know you sent me. 26 I have revealed you to them, and I will continue to do so. Then your love for me will be in them, and I will be in them.”

Jesus Is Betrayed and Arrested

18 After saying these things, Jesus crossed the Kidron Valley with his disciples and entered a grove of olive trees. Judas, the betrayer, knew this place, because Jesus had often gone there with his disciples. The leading priests and Pharisees had given Judas a contingent of Roman soldiers and Temple guards to accompany him. Now with blazing torches, lanterns, and weapons, they arrived at the olive grove.

Jesus fully realized all that was going to happen to him, so he stepped forward to meet them. “Who are you looking for?” he asked.

“Jesus the Nazarene,”[h] they replied.

I am he,”[i] Jesus said. (Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.) As Jesus said I am he,” they all drew back and fell to the ground! Once more he asked them, “Who are you looking for?”

And again they replied, “Jesus the Nazarene.”

“I told you that I am he,” Jesus said. “And since I am the one you want, let these others go.” He did this to fulfill his own statement: “I did not lose a single one of those you have given me.”[j]

10 Then Simon Peter drew a sword and slashed off the right ear of Malchus, the high priest’s slave. 11 But Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword back into its sheath. Shall I not drink from the cup of suffering the Father has given me?”

Jesus at the High Priest’s House

12 So the soldiers, their commanding officer, and the Temple guards arrested Jesus and tied him up. 13 First they took him to Annas, since he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest at that time.[k] 14 Caiaphas was the one who had told the other Jewish leaders, “It’s better that one man should die for the people.”

Peter’s First Denial

15 Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another of the disciples. That other disciple was acquainted with the high priest, so he was allowed to enter the high priest’s courtyard with Jesus. 16 Peter had to stay outside the gate. Then the disciple who knew the high priest spoke to the woman watching at the gate, and she let Peter in. 17 The woman asked Peter, “You’re not one of that man’s disciples, are you?”

“No,” he said, “I am not.”

18 Because it was cold, the household servants and the guards had made a charcoal fire. They stood around it, warming themselves, and Peter stood with them, warming himself.

The High Priest Questions Jesus

19 Inside, the high priest began asking Jesus about his followers and what he had been teaching them. 20 Jesus replied, “Everyone knows what I teach. I have preached regularly in the synagogues and the Temple, where the people[l] gather. I have not spoken in secret. 21 Why are you asking me this question? Ask those who heard me. They know what I said.”

22 Then one of the Temple guards standing nearby slapped Jesus across the face. “Is that the way to answer the high priest?” he demanded.

23 Jesus replied, “If I said anything wrong, you must prove it. But if I’m speaking the truth, why are you beating me?”

24 Then Annas bound Jesus and sent him to Caiaphas, the high priest.

Peter’s Second and Third Denials

25 Meanwhile, as Simon Peter was standing by the fire warming himself, they asked him again, “You’re not one of his disciples, are you?”

He denied it, saying, “No, I am not.”

26 But one of the household slaves of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Didn’t I see you out there in the olive grove with Jesus?” 27 Again Peter denied it. And immediately a rooster crowed.

Jesus’ Trial before Pilate

28 Jesus’ trial before Caiaphas ended in the early hours of the morning. Then he was taken to the headquarters of the Roman governor.[m] His accusers didn’t go inside because it would defile them, and they wouldn’t be allowed to celebrate the Passover. 29 So Pilate, the governor, went out to them and asked, “What is your charge against this man?”

30 “We wouldn’t have handed him over to you if he weren’t a criminal!” they retorted.

31 “Then take him away and judge him by your own law,” Pilate told them.

“Only the Romans are permitted to execute someone,” the Jewish leaders replied. 32 (This fulfilled Jesus’ prediction about the way he would die.[n])

33 Then Pilate went back into his headquarters and called for Jesus to be brought to him. “Are you the king of the Jews?” he asked him.

34 Jesus replied, “Is this your own question, or did others tell you about me?”

35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate retorted. “Your own people and their leading priests brought you to me for trial. Why? What have you done?”

36 Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world.”

37 Pilate said, “So you are a king?”

Jesus responded, “You say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true.”

38 “What is truth?” Pilate asked. Then he went out again to the people and told them, “He is not guilty of any crime. 39 But you have a custom of asking me to release one prisoner each year at Passover. Would you like me to release this ‘King of the Jews’?”

40 But they shouted back, “No! Not this man. We want Barabbas!” (Barabbas was a revolutionary.)

Jesus Is the Vine—Followers Are Branches

15 (A)I am the true vine, and My Father is the (B)vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He [a]prunes it so that it may bear more fruit. (C)You are already [b]clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. (D)Remain in Me, [c]and I in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit [d]of itself [e]but must remain in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches; the one who remains in Me, and I in him [f](E)bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in Me, he is (F)thrown away like a branch and dries up; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you remain in Me, and My words remain in you, (G)ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My (H)Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so [g](I)prove to be My disciples. Just as (J)the Father has loved Me, I also have loved you; remain in My love. 10 (K)If you keep My commandments, you will remain in My love; just as (L)I have kept My Father’s commandments and remain in His love. 11 (M)These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your (N)joy may be made full.

Disciples’ Relation to Each Other

12 “This is (O)My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. 13 (P)Greater love has no one than this, that a person will (Q)lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are My (R)friends if (S)you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, because (T)all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you. 16 (U)You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and (V)bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that (W)whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you. 17 This (X)I command you, that you love one another.

Disciples’ Relation to the World

18 (Y)If the world hates you, [h]you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but (Z)I chose you out of the world, (AA)because of this the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, ‘(AB)A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, (AC)they will persecute you as well; if they (AD)followed My word, they will follow yours also. 21 But all these things they will do to you (AE)on account of My name, (AF)because they do not know the One who sent Me. 22 (AG)If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have [i]sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 The one who hates Me hates My Father also. 24 (AH)If I had not done among them (AI)the works which no one else did, they would not have [j]sin; but now they have both seen and hated Me and My Father as well. 25 But this has happened so that the word that is written in their (AJ)Law will be fulfilled: ‘(AK)They hated Me for no reason.’

26 “When the [k](AL)Helper comes, (AM)whom I will send to you from the Father, namely, (AN)the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, (AO)He will testify about Me, 27 and [l](AP)you are testifying as well, because you have been with Me (AQ)from the beginning.

Jesus’ Warning

16 (AR)These things I have spoken to you so that you will not [m]be (AS)led into sin. They will [n](AT)ban you from the synagogue, yet (AU)an hour is coming for everyone (AV)who kills you to think that he is offering a [o]service to God. These things they will do (AW)because they have not known the Father nor Me. But these things I have spoken to you, (AX)so that when their hour comes, you [p]may remember that I told you of them. However, I did not say these things to you (AY)at the beginning, because I was with you.

The Holy Spirit Promised

“But now (AZ)I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘(BA)Where are You going?’ But because I have said these things to you, (BB)grief has filled your heart. But I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I am leaving; for if I do not leave, the [q](BC)Helper will not come to you; but if I go, (BD)I will send Him to you. And He, when He comes, will convict the world regarding sin, and righteousness, and judgment: regarding sin, (BE)because they do not believe in Me; 10 and regarding (BF)righteousness, because (BG)I am going to the Father and you no longer are going to see Me; 11 (BH)and regarding judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

12 “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them at the present time. 13 But when He, (BI)the Spirit of truth, comes, He will (BJ)guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14 He will (BK)glorify Me, for He will take from Mine and will disclose it to you. 15 (BL)All things that the Father has are Mine; this is why I said that He takes from Mine and will disclose it to you.

Jesus’ Death and Resurrection Foretold

16 (BM)A little while, and (BN)you no longer are going to see Me; and again a little while, and (BO)you will see Me.” 17 So some of His disciples said to one another, “What is this that He is telling us, (BP)A little while, and you are not going to see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because (BQ)I am going to the Father’?” 18 So they were saying, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not know what He is talking about.” 19 (BR)Jesus knew that they wanted to question Him, and He said to them, “Are you deliberating together about this, that I said, ‘A little while, and you are not going to see Me, and again a little while, and you will see Me’? 20 Truly, truly I say to you that (BS)you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will grieve, but (BT)your grief will be turned into joy! 21 (BU)Whenever a woman is in labor she has [r]pain, because her hour has come; but when she gives birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy that a [s]child has been born into the world. 22 Therefore (BV)you too have grief now; but (BW)I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one is going to take your joy away from you.

Prayer Promises

23 And (BX)on that day (BY)you will not question Me about anything. Truly, truly I say to you, (BZ)if you ask the Father for anything in My name, He will give it to you. 24 (CA)Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your (CB)joy may be made full.

25 “These things I have spoken to you in (CC)figures of speech; (CD)an hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech, but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 (CE)On that day (CF)you will ask in My name, and I am not saying to you that I will request of the Father on your behalf; 27 for (CG)the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and (CH)have believed that (CI)I came forth from the Father. 28 (CJ)I came forth from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and (CK)going to the Father.”

29 His disciples *said, “See, now You are speaking plainly and are not [t]using any (CL)figure of speech. 30 Now we know that You know all things, and that You have no need for anyone to question You; this is why we (CM)believe that You (CN)came forth from God.” 31 Jesus replied to them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, (CO)an hour is coming, and has already come, for (CP)you to be scattered, each to (CQ)his own home, and to leave Me alone; and yet (CR)I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. 33 These things I have spoken to you so that (CS)in Me you may have peace. (CT)In the world you have tribulation, but (CU)take courage; (CV)I have overcome the world.”

The High Priestly Prayer

17 Jesus spoke these things; and (CW)raising His eyes to heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come; (CX)glorify Your Son, so that the Son may glorify You, just as (CY)You gave Him authority over all [u]mankind, so that [v](CZ)to all whom You have given Him, (DA)He may give eternal life. And this is eternal life, that they may know You, (DB)the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom (DC)You have sent. (DD)I glorified You on the earth [w](DE)by accomplishing the work which You have given Me to do. And now You, Father, (DF)glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had (DG)with You before the world existed.

(DH)I have revealed Your name to the men whom (DI)You gave Me out of the world; they were (DJ)Yours and You gave them to Me, and they have (DK)followed Your word. Now they have come to know that everything which You have given Me is from You; for (DL)the words which You gave Me (DM)I have given to them; and they received them and truly understood that (DN)I came forth from You, and they believed that (DO)You sent Me. (DP)I ask on their behalf; (DQ)I do not ask on behalf of the world, but on the behalf of those whom (DR)You have given Me, because (DS)they are Yours; 10 and (DT)all things that are Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I have been glorified in them. 11 I am no longer going to be in the world; and yet (DU)they themselves are in the world, and (DV)I am coming to You. (DW)Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name (DX)which You have given Me, so that (DY)they may be one just as We are. 12 While I was with them, I was keeping them in Your name, (DZ)which You have given Me; and I guarded them, and (EA)not one of them perished except (EB)the [x]son of destruction, so that the (EC)Scripture would be fulfilled.

The Disciples in the World

13 But now (ED)I am coming to You; and (EE)these things I speak in the world so that they may have My (EF)joy made full in themselves. 14 I have given them Your word; and (EG)the world has hated them because (EH)they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I am not asking You to take them out of the world, but to keep them away from [y](EI)the evil one. 16 (EJ)They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 (EK)Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. 18 Just as (EL)You sent Me into the world, (EM)I also sent them into the world. 19 And for their sakes I (EN)sanctify Myself, so that they themselves also may be (EO)sanctified (EP)in truth.

20 “I am not asking on behalf of these alone, but also for those who believe in Me through their word, 21 that they may all be one; (EQ)just as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, (ER)so that the world may [z]believe that (ES)You sent Me.

Disciples’ Future Glory

22 The (ET)glory which You have given Me I also have given to them, so that they may be one, just as We are one; 23 (EU)I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected [aa]in unity, so that the world may [ab]know that (EV)You sent Me, and You (EW)loved them, just as You loved Me. 24 Father, I desire that (EX)they also, whom You have given Me, (EY)be with Me where I am, so that they may see My (EZ)glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before (FA)the foundation of the world.

25 (FB)Righteous Father, [ac]although (FC)the world has not known You, yet I have known You; and these have known that (FD)You sent Me; 26 and (FE)I have made Your name known to them, and will make it known, so that (FF)the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”

Judas Betrays Jesus

18 When Jesus had spoken these words, (FG)He went away with His disciples across (FH)the [ad]ravine of the Kidron, where there was (FI)a garden which He entered [ae]with His disciples. Now Judas, who was [af]betraying Him, also knew the place, because Jesus had (FJ)often met there with His disciples. (FK)So Judas, having obtained (FL)the Roman [ag]cohort and (FM)officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, *came there with lanterns, (FN)torches, and weapons. Jesus therefore, (FO)knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, came out into the open and *said to them, (FP)Whom are you seeking?” They answered Him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” He *said to them, “I am He.” And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them. Now then, when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground. He then asked them again, (FQ)Whom are you seeking?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.” Jesus answered, “I told you that I am He; so if you are seeking Me, let these men go on their way.” This took place so that the word which He spoke would be fulfilled: (FR)Of those whom You have given Me I lost not one.” 10 Then Simon Peter, (FS)since he had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his right ear; and the slave’s name was Malchus. 11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put the sword into the sheath; (FT)the cup which the Father has given Me, am I not to drink it?”

Jesus before the Priests

12 (FU)So (FV)the Roman [ah]cohort, the [ai]commander, and the (FW)officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him, 13 and brought Him to (FX)Annas first; for he was the father-in-law of (FY)Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14 Now Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that (FZ)it was in their best interest for one man to die in behalf of the people.

15 (GA)Simon Peter was following Jesus, and so was another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and he entered with Jesus into (GB)the courtyard of the high priest, 16 (GC)but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in. 17 (GD)Then the slave woman who was the doorkeeper *said to Peter, “(GE)You are not also one of this Man’s disciples, are you?” He *said, “I am not.” 18 Now the slaves and the (GF)officers were standing there, having made (GG)a charcoal fire, for it was cold and they were (GH)warming themselves; and Peter was also with them, standing and warming himself.

19 (GI)The high priest then questioned Jesus about His disciples, and about His teaching. 20 Jesus answered him, “I (GJ)have spoken openly to the world; I always (GK)taught in [aj]synagogues and (GL)in the temple area, where all the Jews congregate; and I said nothing in secret. 21 Why are you asking Me? Ask those who have heard what I spoke to them. Look: these people know what I said.” 22 But when He said this, one of the (GM)officers, who was standing nearby, (GN)struck Jesus, saying, “Is that the way You answer the high priest?” 23 (GO)Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken wrongly, testify of the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?” 24 (GP)So Annas sent Him bound to (GQ)Caiaphas the high priest.

Peter’s Denial of Jesus

25 (GR)Now (GS)Simon Peter was still standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “(GT)You are not one of His disciples as well, are you?” He denied it, and said, “I am not.” 26 One of the slaves of the high priest, who was related to the one (GU)whose ear Peter cut off, *said, “Did I not see you in (GV)the garden with Him?” 27 Peter then denied it again, and immediately (GW)a rooster crowed.

Jesus before Pilate

28 (GX)Then they *brought Jesus from (GY)Caiaphas into (GZ)the [ak]Praetorium, and it was early; and they themselves did not enter (HA)the [al]Praetorium, so that (HB)they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover. 29 (HC)Therefore Pilate came out to them and *said, “What accusation are you bringing against this Man?” 30 They answered and said to him, “If this Man were not [am]a criminal, we would not have handed Him over to you.” 31 So Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law.” The Jews said to him, “We are not [an]permitted to put anyone to death.” 32 This happened so that (HD)the word of Jesus which He said, indicating what kind of death He was going to die, would be fulfilled.

33 Therefore Pilate (HE)entered the Praetorium again, and summoned Jesus and said to Him, “(HF)You are the King of the Jews?” 34 Jesus answered, “Are you saying this [ao]on your own, or did others tell you about Me?” 35 Pilate answered, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests handed You over to me; what have You done?” 36 Jesus answered, (HG)My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not [ap]of this realm.” 37 Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, (HH)You say correctly that I am a king. For this purpose I have been born, and for this I have come into the world: (HI)to testify to the truth. (HJ)Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice.” 38 Pilate *said to Him, “What is truth?”

And after saying this, he (HK)came out again to the Jews and *said to them, “(HL)I find no grounds at all for charges in [aq]His case. 39 (HM)However, you have a custom that I release one prisoner [ar]for you at the Passover; therefore do you wish that I release [as]for you the King of the Jews?” 40 So they shouted again, saying, “(HN)Not this Man, but Barabbas.” Now Barabbas was a rebel.
