40 but now (A)you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth (B)that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. 41 You are doing the works your father did.” They said to him, (C)“We were not born of sexual immorality. We have (D)one Father—even God.” 42 Jesus said to them, (E)“If God were your Father, you would love me, for (F)I came from God and (G)I am here. (H)I came not of my own accord, but (I)he sent me. 43 (J)Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot (K)bear to hear my word. 44 (L)You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. (M)He was a murderer from the beginning, and (N)does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. (O)When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”(D)

42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me,(E) for I have come here from God.(F) I have not come on my own;(G) God sent me.(H) 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil,(I) and you want to carry out your father’s desires.(J) He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.(K)
