John 7:37-39

New International Version

³⁷On the last and greatest day of the festival,^(A) Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.^(B) ³⁸Whoever believes^(C) in me, as Scripture has said,^(D) rivers of living water^(E) will flow from within them.”^[a]^(F) ³⁹By this he meant the Spirit,^(G) whom those who believed in him were later to receive.^(H) Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.^(I)

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

¹⁵“If you love me, keep my commands.^(A) ¹⁶And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate^(B) to help you and be with you forever— ¹⁷the Spirit of truth.^(C) The world cannot accept him,^(D) because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be^[a] in you. ¹⁸I will not leave you as orphans;^(E) I will come to you.^(F) ¹⁹Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me.^(G) Because I live, you also will live.^(H) ²⁰On that day^(I) you will realize that I am in my Father,^(J) and you are in me, and I am in you.^(K) ²¹Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me.^(L) The one who loves me will be loved by my Father,^(M) and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

²²Then Judas^(N) (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”^(O)

²³Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching.^(P) My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.^(Q)

Jesus Prays for His Disciples

⁶“I have revealed you^[a]^(A) to those whom you gave me^(B) out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. ⁷Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. ⁸For I gave them the words you gave me^(C) and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you,^(D) and they believed that you sent me.^(E) ⁹I pray for them.^(F) I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me,^(G) for they are yours. ¹⁰All I have is yours, and all you have is mine.^(H) And glory has come to me through them. ¹¹I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world,^(I) and I am coming to you.^(J) Holy Father, protect them by the power of^[b] your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one^(K) as we are one.^(L) ¹²While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by^[c] that name you gave me. None has been lost^(M) except the one doomed to destruction^(N) so that Scripture would be fulfilled.^(O)

¹³“I am coming to you now,^(P) but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy^(Q) within them. ¹⁴I have given them your word and the world has hated them,^(R) for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world.^(S) ¹⁵My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.^(T) ¹⁶They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.^(U) ¹⁷Sanctify them by^[d] the truth; your word is truth.^(V) ¹⁸As you sent me into the world,^(W) I have sent them into the world.^(X) ¹⁹For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.^(Y)
