41 Others said, “This is (A)the Christ.”

But some said, “Will the Christ come out of Galilee? 42 (B)Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, (C)where David was?” 43 So (D)there was a division among the people because of Him. 44 Now (E)some of them wanted to take Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

Rejected by the Authorities

45 Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why have you not brought Him?”

46 The officers answered, (F)“No man ever spoke like this Man!”

46 “No one ever spoke the way this man does,”(F) the guards replied.

47 “You mean he has deceived you also?”(G) the Pharisees retorted. 48 “Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him?(H) 49 No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law—there is a curse on them.”

50 Nicodemus,(I) who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, 51 “Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?”

52 They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.”(J)
