Testimonies About Jesus

31 “If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true.(A) 32 There is another who testifies in my favor,(B) and I know that his testimony about me is true.

33 “You have sent to John and he has testified(C) to the truth. 34 Not that I accept human testimony;(D) but I mention it that you may be saved.(E) 35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light,(F) and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.

36 “I have testimony weightier than that of John.(G) For the works that the Father has given me to finish—the very works that I am doing(H)—testify that the Father has sent me.(I) 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me.(J) You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,(K) 38 nor does his word dwell in you,(L) for you do not believe(M) the one he sent.(N) 39 You study[a] the Scriptures(O) diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life.(P) These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,(Q) 40 yet you refuse to come to me(R) to have life.

41 “I do not accept glory from human beings,(S) 42 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. 43 I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. 44 How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God[b]?(T)

45 “But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses,(U) on whom your hopes are set.(V) 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.(W) 47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?”(X)

  2. John 5:44 Some early manuscripts the Only One

31 (A)If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not [a]true. 32 There is (B)another who testifies about Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true.

Testimony of John the Baptist

33 You have sent messengers to John, and he (C)has testified to the truth. 34 But (D)the testimony I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 He was (E)the lamp that was burning and shining, and you (F)were willing to rejoice for [b]a while in his light.

Testimony of Works

36 But the testimony I have is greater than the testimony of John; for (G)the works which the Father has given Me (H)to accomplish—the very works that I do—testify about Me, that the Father (I)has sent Me.

Testimony of the Father

37 And the Father who sent Me, (J)He has testified about Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form. 38 Also you do not have (K)His word remaining in you, because you do not believe Him whom He (L)sent.

Testimony of the Scripture

39 [c](M)You examine the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is (N)those very Scriptures that testify about Me; 40 and yet you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life. 41 (O)I do not receive glory from people; 42 but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. 43 I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not [d]receive Me; (P)if another comes in his own name, you will [e]receive him. 44 How can you believe, when you [f](Q)accept [g]glory from one another and you do not seek (R)the [h]glory that is from (S)the one and only God? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is (T)Moses, in whom you have put your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for (U)he wrote about Me. 47 But (V)if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”

31 “If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not [a]valid. 32 There is another [My Father] who testifies about Me, and I know [without any doubt] that His testimony on My behalf is true and valid.

Testimony of John

33 You have sent [an inquiry] to [b]John [the Baptist] and he has testified [as an eyewitness] to the truth. 34 But the testimony I receive is not from man [a merely human witness]; but I say these things so that you may be saved [that is, have eternal life]. 35 John was the lamp that kept on burning and shining [to show you the way], and you were willing for a while to rejoice in his light.(A)

Testimony of Works

36 But the testimony which I have is far greater than the testimony of John; for the works that the Father has given Me to finish—the very same works [that is, the miracles and proofs of My deity] that I am [now] doing—testify about Me, [by providing evidence] that the Father has sent Me.

Testimony of the Father

37 And the Father who sent Me has Himself testified about Me. You have never heard His voice nor seen His form [His majesty and greatness—what He is like]. 38 You do not have His word (Scripture) abiding in you [actually living in your hearts and minds], because you do not believe in Him whom He has sent.

Testimony of the Scripture

39 [c]You search and keep on searching and examining the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and yet it is those [very Scriptures] that testify about Me; 40 and still you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life. 41 I do not receive glory and approval from men; 42 but I know you and recognize that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. 43 I have come in My Father’s name and with His power, and you do not receive Me [because your minds are closed]; but if another comes in his own name and with no authority or power except his own, you will receive him and give your approval to an imposter. 44 How can you believe [in Me], when you [seek and] receive glory and approval from one another, and yet you do not seek the glory and approval which comes from the one and only God? 45 Do not think that I [am the One who] will accuse you before the Father. There [already] is one who accuses you: Moses, [the very one] in whom you have placed your hope [for salvation]. 46 For if you believed and relied on [the Scriptures written by] Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me [personally].(B) 47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”

Footnotes

  1. John 5:31 I.e. admissible as legal evidence.
  2. John 5:33 All references to “John” in this Gospel refer to John the Baptist. See note 1:6.
  3. John 5:39 Or Search the Scriptures! The Greek form found here can be either a command or a statement (indicative mood).

31 If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.

32 There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.

33 Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.

34 But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.

35 He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

36 But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.

37 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.

38 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.

39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

41 I receive not honour from men.

42 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.

43 I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.

44 How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?

45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.

46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me; for he wrote of me.

47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

Witnesses to Jesus

31 If I speak for myself, there is no way to prove I am telling the truth. 32 But there is someone else who speaks for me, and I know what he says is true. 33 (A) You sent messengers to John, and he told them the truth. 34 I don't depend on what people say about me, but I tell you these things so that you may be saved. 35 (B) John was a lamp that gave a lot of light, and you were glad to enjoy his light for a while.

36 But something more important than John speaks for me. I mean the things that the Father has given me to do! All of these speak for me and prove that the Father sent me.

37 (C) The Father who sent me also speaks for me, but you have never heard his voice or seen him face to face. 38 You have not believed his message, because you refused to have faith in the one he sent.

39 (D) You search the Scriptures, because you think you will find eternal life in them. The Scriptures tell about me, 40 but you refuse to come to me for eternal life.

41 I don't care about human praise, 42 but I do know that none of you love God. 43 I have come with my Father's authority, and you have not welcomed me. But you will welcome people who come on their own. 44 How could you possibly believe? You like to have your friends praise you, and you don't care about praise that the only God can give!

45 Don't think that I will be the one to accuse you to the Father. You have put your hope in Moses, yet he is the very one who will accuse you. 46 Moses wrote about me, and if you had believed Moses, you would have believed me. 47 But if you don't believe what Moses wrote, how can you believe what I say?
