¹⁷ The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband,’

¹⁸ for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true!”

²⁶ And here he is, speaking openly, but they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Messiah?^[a]

³¹ Yet many in the crowd believed in him and were saying, “When the Messiah^[a] comes, will he do more signs than this man has done?”^[b](A)
