¹⁶ For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

¹⁶ By this we know love, because he laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.

⁹ By this God’s love was revealed in us, that God has sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. ¹⁰ In this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son as the atoning sacrifice^[a] for our sins.

⁸ But God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
