Jesus Appears at the Sea of Galilee

21 After these things Jesus [a](A)revealed Himself (B)again to the disciples at the (C)Sea of Tiberias, and He revealed Himself in this way: Simon Peter, (D)Thomas who was called [b]Didymus, (E)Nathanael of (F)Cana in Galilee, (G)the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. Simon Peter *said to them, “I am going fishing.” They *said to him, “We are also coming with you.” They went out and got into the boat; and (H)that night they caught nothing.

But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not (I)know that it was Jesus. So Jesus *said to them, “Children, (J)you do not have any fish to eat, do you?” They answered Him, “No.” And He said to them, (K)Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you will find the fish.” So they cast it, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great quantity of fish. (L)Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved *said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he was stripped for work), and threw himself into the sea. But the other disciples came in the little boat, for they were not far from the land, but about [c]two hundred cubits away, dragging the net full of fish.

So when they got out on the land, they *saw a charcoal (M)fire already [d]made and (N)fish placed on it, and bread. 10 Jesus *said to them, “Bring some of the (O)fish which you have now caught.” 11 So Simon Peter went up and hauled the net to land, full of large fish, 153; and although there were so many, the net was not torn.

Jesus Provides

12 Jesus *said to them, “Come and have (P)breakfast.” None of the disciples ventured to inquire of Him, “Who are You?” knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus *came and *took (Q)the bread and *gave it to them, and the (R)fish likewise. 14 This was now the (S)third time that Jesus revealed Himself to the disciples, after He was raised from the dead.

The Love Question

15 Now when they had (T)finished breakfast, Jesus *said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you [e](U)love Me more than these?” He *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [f]love You.” He *said to him, “Tend (V)My lambs.” 16 He *said to him again, a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you [g]love Me?” He *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [h]love You.” He *said to him, (W)Shepherd My sheep.” 17 He *said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you [i]love Me?” Peter was [j]hurt because He said to him (X)the third time, “Do you [k]love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, (Y)You know all things; You know that I [l]love You.” Jesus *said to him, (Z)Tend My sheep.

Our Times Are in His Hand

18 Truly, truly I tell you, when you were younger, you used to put on your belt and walk wherever you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will put your belt on you, and bring you where you do not want to go.” 19 Now He said this, (AA)indicating by (AB)what kind of death he would glorify God. And when He had said this, He *said to him, (AC)Follow Me!”

20 Peter turned around and *saw the (AD)disciple whom Jesus loved following them—the one who also had (AE)leaned back on His chest at the supper and said, “Lord, who is the one who is betraying You?” 21 So Peter, upon seeing him, *said to Jesus, “Lord, and what about this man?” 22 Jesus *said to him, “If I want him to remain (AF)until I come, what is that to you? You (AG)follow Me!” 23 Therefore this [m]account went out among (AH)the brothers, that that disciple would not die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but only, “If I want him to remain (AI)until I come, what is that to you?”

24 This is the disciple who (AJ)is testifying about these things and wrote these things, and we know that his testimony is true.

25 But there are also (AK)many other things which Jesus did, which, if they were written in detail, I expect that even the world itself would not contain the books that would be written.

Breakfast by the Sea

21 After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the (A)Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: Simon Peter, (B)Thomas called the Twin, (C)Nathanael of (D)Cana in Galilee, (E)the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.”

They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They went out and [a]immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples (F)did not know that it was Jesus. Then (G)Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any food?”

They answered Him, “No.”

And He said to them, (H)“Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some. So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.

Therefore (I)that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea. But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish. Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish which you have just caught.”

11 Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. 12 Jesus said to them, (J)“Come and eat breakfast.” Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, “Who are You?”—knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish.

14 This is now (K)the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead.

Jesus Restores Peter

15 So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of [b]Jonah, do you love Me more than these?”

He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [c]love You.”

He said to him, (L)“Feed My lambs.”

16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of [d]Jonah, do you love Me?”

He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [e]love You.”

(M)He said to him, “Tend My (N)sheep.”

17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of [f]Jonah, do you [g]love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?”

And he said to Him, “Lord, (O)You know all things; You know that I love You.”

Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep. 18 (P)Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” 19 This He spoke, signifying (Q)by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, (R)“Follow Me.”

The Beloved Disciple and His Book

20 Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple (S)whom Jesus loved following, (T)who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” 21 Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, “But Lord, what about this man?”

22 Jesus said to him, “If I [h]will that he remain (U)till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.”

23 Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you?”

24 This is the disciple who (V)testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true.

25 (W)And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, (X)I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.

Song of Trust in God’s Protection

26 (A)On that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah:

“We have a (B)strong city;
He sets up walls and ramparts for [a](C)security.
Open the (D)gates, that the (E)righteous nation may enter,
The one that [b]remains faithful.
The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect (F)peace,
Because he trusts in You.
(G)Trust in the Lord forever,
For in [c]God the Lord, we have an everlasting (H)Rock.
For He has brought low those who dwell on high, the (I)unassailable city;
(J)He lays it low, He lays it low to the ground, He casts it to the dust.
(K)The foot will trample it,
The feet of the (L)poor, the steps of the helpless.”

The (M)way of the righteous is smooth;
O Upright One, (N)make the path of the righteous level.
Indeed, while following the way of (O)Your judgments, Lord,
We have waited for You eagerly;
(P)Your name, and (Q)remembering You, is the desire of our souls.
(R)At night [d]my soul longs for You,
Indeed, [e]my spirit within me (S)seeks You diligently;
For when the earth [f]experiences Your judgments,
The inhabitants of the world (T)learn righteousness.
10 Though the wicked person is shown compassion,
He does not (U)learn righteousness;
He (V)deals unjustly in the land of uprightness,
And does not perceive the majesty of the Lord.

11 Lord, Your hand is lifted up, yet they (W)do not see it.
[g]They see (X)Your zeal for the people and are put to shame;
Indeed, [h](Y)fire will devour Your enemies.
12 Lord, You will establish (Z)peace for us,
Since You have also performed for us all our works.
13 Lord, our God, (AA)other masters besides You have ruled us;
But through You alone we [i](AB)confess Your name.
14 (AC)The dead will not live, the [j]departed spirits will not rise;
Therefore You have (AD)punished and destroyed them,
And You have eliminated all remembrance of them.
15 (AE)You have increased the nation, Lord,
You have increased the nation, You are glorified;
You have (AF)extended all the borders of the land.
16 Lord, they sought You (AG)in distress;
They [k]could only whisper a prayer,
Your discipline was upon them.
17 (AH)As the pregnant woman approaches the time to give birth,
She writhes and cries out in her labor pains;
This is how we were before You, Lord.
18 We were pregnant, we writhed in labor,
We (AI)gave birth, as it seems, only to wind.
We could not accomplish deliverance for the earth,
Nor were (AJ)inhabitants of the world [l]born.
19 Your (AK)dead will live;
[m]Their corpses will rise.
You who lie in the dust, (AL)awake and shout for joy,
For your dew is as the dew of the [n]dawn,
And the earth will [o]give birth to the [p]departed spirits.

20 Come, my people, (AM)enter your rooms
And close your doors behind you;
Hide for a little [q](AN)while
Until (AO)indignation [r]runs its course.
21 For behold, the Lord is about to (AP)come out from His place
To (AQ)punish the inhabitants of the earth for their wrongdoing;
And the earth will (AR)reveal her bloodshed
And will no longer cover her slain.

God’s Blessings for Israel

27 On that day (AS)the Lord will punish [s](AT)Leviathan the fleeing serpent,
With His fierce and great and mighty sword,
Even [t]Leviathan the twisted serpent;
And (AU)He will kill the dragon who lives in the sea.

On that day,
“A [u](AV)vineyard of beauty, sing of it!
I, the Lord, am its keeper;
(AW)I water it every moment.
So that no one will [v]damage it,
I (AX)guard it night and day.
I have no wrath.
Should [w]someone give Me (AY)briars and thorns in battle,
Then I would step on them, (AZ)I would burn them [x]completely.
Or let him [y](BA)rely on My protection,
Let him make peace with Me,
Let him (BB)make peace with Me.”
[z]In the days to come Jacob (BC)will take root,
Israel will (BD)blossom and sprout,
And they will fill the [aa]whole world with (BE)fruit.

Like the striking of Him who has struck them, has (BF)He struck them?
Or like the slaughter of His slain, [ab]have they been slain?
You contended with them [ac]by banishing them, by (BG)driving them away.
With His fierce wind He has expelled them on the day of the (BH)east wind.
Therefore through this Jacob’s wrongdoing will be (BI)forgiven;
And this will be [ad]the full price of the [ae](BJ)pardoning of his sin:
When he makes all the (BK)altar stones like pulverized chalk stones;
When [af]Asherim and incense altars will not stand.
10 For the fortified city is (BL)isolated,
A [ag]homestead deserted and abandoned like the desert;
(BM)There the calf will graze,
And there it will lie down and [ah]feed on its branches.
11 When its (BN)limbs are dry, they are broken off;
Women come and make a fire with them,
For they are not a people of (BO)discernment,
Therefore (BP)their Maker (BQ)will not have compassion on them.
And their Creator will not be gracious to them.

12 On that day the Lord (BR)will thresh from the flowing stream of the (BS)Euphrates River to the brook of Egypt, and you will be (BT)gathered up one by one, you sons of Israel. 13 It will come about also on that day that a great (BU)trumpet will be blown, and those who were perishing in the land of (BV)Assyria and who were scattered in the land of Egypt will come and (BW)worship the Lord on the holy mountain in Jerusalem.

A Song of Salvation

26 In (A)that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah:

“We have a strong city;
(B)God will appoint salvation for walls and bulwarks.
(C)Open the gates,
That the righteous nation which [a]keeps the truth may enter in.
You will keep him in perfect (D)peace,
Whose mind is stayed on You,
Because he trusts in You.
Trust in the Lord forever,
(E)For in Yah, the Lord, is [b]everlasting strength.
For He brings [c]down those who dwell on high,
(F)The lofty city;
He lays it low,
He lays it low to the ground,
He brings it down to the dust.
The foot shall [d]tread it down—
The feet of the poor
And the steps of the needy.”

The way of the just is uprightness;
(G)O Most Upright,
You [e]weigh the path of the just.
Yes, (H)in the way of Your judgments,
O Lord, we have (I)waited for You;
The desire of our soul is for Your name
And for the remembrance of You.
(J)With my soul I have desired You in the night,
Yes, by my spirit within me I will seek You early;
For when Your judgments are in the earth,
The inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.

10 (K)Let grace be shown to the wicked,
Yet he will not learn righteousness;
In (L)the land of uprightness he will deal unjustly,
And will not behold the majesty of the Lord.
11 Lord, when Your hand is lifted up, (M)they will not see.
But they will see and be ashamed
For [f]their envy of people;
Yes, the fire of Your enemies shall devour them.

12 Lord, You will establish peace for us,
For You have also done all our works [g]in us.
13 O Lord our God, (N)masters besides You
Have had dominion over us;
But by You only we make mention of Your name.
14 They are dead, they will not live;
They are deceased, they will not rise.
Therefore You have punished and destroyed them,
And made all their memory to (O)perish.
15 You have increased the nation, O Lord,
You have (P)increased the nation;
You are glorified;
You have expanded all the [h]borders of the land.

16 Lord, (Q)in trouble they have visited You,
They poured out a prayer when Your chastening was upon them.
17 As (R)a woman with child
Is in pain and cries out in her [i]pangs,
When she draws near the time of her delivery,
So have we been in Your sight, O Lord.
18 We have been with child, we have been in pain;
We have, as it were, [j]brought forth wind;
We have not accomplished any deliverance in the earth,
Nor have (S)the inhabitants of the world fallen.

19 (T)Your dead shall live;
Together with [k]my dead body they shall arise.
(U)Awake and sing, you who dwell in dust;
For your dew is like the dew of herbs,
And the earth shall cast out the dead.

Take Refuge from the Coming Judgment

20 Come, my people, (V)enter your chambers,
And shut your doors behind you;
Hide yourself, as it were, (W)for a little moment,
Until the indignation is past.
21 For behold, the Lord (X)comes out of His place
To punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity;
The earth will also disclose her [l]blood,
And will no more cover her slain.

Israel Will Be Restored

27 In that day the Lord with His severe sword, great and strong,
Will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent,
(Y)Leviathan that twisted serpent;
And He will slay (Z)the reptile that is in the sea.

The Restoration of Israel

In that day (AA)sing to her,
(AB)“A vineyard of [m]red wine!
(AC)I, the Lord, keep it,
I water it every moment;
Lest any hurt it,
I keep it night and day.
Fury is not in Me.
Who would set (AD)briers and thorns
Against Me in battle?
I would go through them,
I would burn them together.
Or let him take hold (AE)of My strength,
That he may (AF)make peace with Me;
And he shall make peace with Me.”

Those who come He shall cause (AG)to take root in Jacob;
Israel shall blossom and bud,
And fill the face of the world with fruit.

(AH)Has He struck [n]Israel as He struck those who struck him?
Or has He been slain according to the slaughter of those who were slain by Him?
(AI)In measure, by sending it away,
You contended with it.
(AJ)He removes it by His rough wind
In the day of the east wind.
Therefore by this the iniquity of Jacob will be covered;
And this is all the fruit of taking away his sin:
When he makes all the stones of the altar
Like chalkstones that are beaten to dust,
[o]Wooden images and incense altars shall not stand.

10 Yet the fortified city will be (AK)desolate,
The habitation forsaken and left like a wilderness;
There the calf will feed, and there it will lie down
And consume its branches.
11 When its boughs are withered, they will be broken off;
The women come and set them on fire.
For (AL)it is a people of no understanding;
Therefore He who made them will (AM)not have mercy on them,
And (AN)He who formed them will show them no favor.

12 And it shall come to pass in that day
That the Lord will thresh,
From the channel of [p]the River to the Brook of Egypt;
And you will be (AO)gathered one by one,
O you children of Israel.

13 (AP)So it shall be in that day:
(AQ)The great trumpet will be blown;
They will come, who are about to perish in the land of Assyria,
And they who are outcasts in the land of (AR)Egypt,
And shall (AS)worship the Lord in the holy mount at Jerusalem.
