The Resurrection

20 ^(A)Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that ^(B)the stone had been taken away from the tomb. ² So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, ^(C)the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and ^(D)we do not know where they have laid him.” ^3 (E)So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. ⁴ Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. ⁵ And stooping to look in, he saw ^(F)the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. ⁶ Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, ⁷ and ^(G)the face cloth, which had been on Jesus'^[a] head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. ⁸ Then the other disciple, ^(H)who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; ⁹ for as yet ^(I)they did not understand the Scripture, ^(J)that he must rise from the dead. ¹⁰ Then the disciples went back to their homes.

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

¹¹ But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. ¹² And ^(K)she saw ^(L)two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. ¹³ They said to her, ^(M)“Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, ^(N)“They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” ¹⁴ Having said this, she turned around and ^(O)saw Jesus standing, ^(P)but she did not know that it was Jesus. ¹⁵ Jesus said to her, ^(Q)“Woman, why are you weeping? ^(R)Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be ^(S)the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” ¹⁶ Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic,^{[b] (T)}“Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). ¹⁷ Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to ^(U)my brothers and say to them, ^(V)‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to ^(W)my God and your God.’” ¹⁸ Mary Magdalene ^(X)went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.

Jesus Appears to the Disciples

^19 (Y)On the evening ^(Z)of that day, the first day of the week, ^(AA)the doors being locked where the disciples were ^(AB)for fear of the Jews,^[c] Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, ^(AC)“Peace be with you.” ²⁰ When he had said this, ^(AD)he showed them his hands and his side. Then ^(AE)the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. ²¹ Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As ^(AF)the Father has sent me, ^(AG)even so I am sending you.” ²² And when he had said this, he ^(AH)breathed on them and said to them, ^(AI)“Receive the Holy Spirit. ^23 (AJ)If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”

Jesus and Thomas

²⁴ Now ^(AK)Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin,^[d] was not with them when Jesus came. ²⁵ So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, ^(AL)“Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”

²⁶ Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. ^(AM)Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ^(AN)“Peace be with you.” ²⁷ Then he said to Thomas, ^(AO)“Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” ²⁸ Thomas answered him, ^(AP)“My Lord and my God!” ²⁹ Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? ^(AQ)Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

The Purpose of This Book

^30 (AR)Now Jesus did many other signs ^(AS)in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; ^31 (AT)but these are written so that you may ^(AU)believe that Jesus is the Christ, ^(AV)the Son of God, and that by believing ^(AW)you may have life ^(AX)in his name.

Jesus Appears to Seven Disciples

21 After this Jesus ^(AY)revealed himself ^(AZ)again to the disciples by ^(BA)the Sea of Tiberias, and he revealed himself in this way. ² Simon Peter, ^(BB)Thomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of ^(BC)Cana in Galilee, ^(BD)the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. ³ Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but ^(BE)that night they caught nothing.

⁴ Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples ^(BF)did not know that it was Jesus. ^5 (BG)Jesus said to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” They answered him, “No.” ^6 (BH)He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish. ⁷ That disciple ^(BI)whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, ^(BJ)he put on his outer garment, for he was ^(BK)stripped for work, and ^(BL)threw himself into the sea. ⁸ The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards^[e] off.

⁹ When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. ¹⁰ Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” ¹¹ So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn. ¹² Jesus said to them, ^(BM)“Come and ^(BN)have breakfast.” Now ^(BO)none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. ¹³ Jesus came and ^(BP)took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. ^14 (BQ)This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

Jesus and Peter

¹⁵ When they had ^(BR)finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ^(BS)“Simon, ^(BT)son of John, ^(BU)do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed ^(BV)my lambs.” ¹⁶ He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, ^(BW)“Tend ^(BX)my sheep.” ¹⁷ He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him ^(BY)the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, ^(BZ)you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed ^(CA)my sheep. ^18 (CB)Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, ^(CC)you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” ¹⁹ (This he said to show ^(CD)by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, ^(CE)“Follow me.”

Jesus and the Beloved Apostle

²⁰ Peter turned and saw ^(CF)the disciple whom Jesus loved following them, ^(CG)the one who also had leaned back against him during the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?” ²¹ When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?” ²² Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain ^(CH)until ^(CI)I come, what is that to you? ^(CJ)You follow me!” ²³ So the saying spread abroad among ^(CK)the brothers^[f] that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?”

²⁴ This is the disciple ^(CL)who is bearing witness about these things, and who has written these things, and ^(CM)we know ^(CN)that his testimony is true.

²⁵ Now ^(CO)there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that ^(CP)the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

The Promise of the Holy Spirit

1 In the first book, O ^(CQ)Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began ^(CR)to do and teach, ² until the day when ^(CS)he was taken up, after he ^(CT)had given commands ^(CU)through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. ^3 (CV)He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

⁴ And while staying^[g] with them ^(CW)he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; ⁵ for ^(CX)John baptized with water, ^(CY)but you will be baptized ^(CZ)with^[h] the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

The Ascension

⁶ So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, ^(DA)will you at this time ^(DB)restore the kingdom to Israel?” ⁷ He said to them, ^(DC)“It is not for you to know ^(DD)times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. ⁸ But you will receive ^(DE)power ^(DF)when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and ^(DG)you will be ^(DH)my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and ^(DI)Samaria, and ^(DJ)to the end of the earth.” ⁹ And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, ^(DK)he was lifted up, and ^(DL)a cloud took him out of their sight. ¹⁰ And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, ^(DM)two ^(DN)men stood by them in ^(DO)white robes, ¹¹ and said, ^(DP)“Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, ^(DQ)will ^(DR)come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

Matthias Chosen to Replace Judas

¹² Then ^(DS)they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey away. ¹³ And when they had entered, they went up to ^(DT)the upper room, where they were staying, ^(DU)Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon ^(DV)the Zealot and Judas the son of James. ¹⁴ All these ^(DW)with one accord ^(DX)were devoting themselves to prayer, together with ^(DY)the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and ^(DZ)his brothers.^[i]

¹⁵ In those days Peter stood up among ^(EA)the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120) and said, ¹⁶ “Brothers, ^(EB)the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, ^(EC)who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. ¹⁷ For ^(ED)he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in ^(EE)this ministry.” ¹⁸ (Now this man ^(EF)acquired a field with ^(EG)the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong^[j] he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. ¹⁹ And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called ^(EH)in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) ²⁰ “For it is written in the Book of Psalms,

and

²¹ So one of the men who have accompanied us during ^(EK)all the time that the Lord Jesus ^(EL)went in and out among us, ^22 (EM)beginning from the baptism of John until the day when ^(EN)he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us ^(EO)a witness to his resurrection.” ²³ And they put forward two, Joseph called ^(EP)Barsabbas, who was also called ^(EQ)Justus, and ^(ER)Matthias. ²⁴ And ^(ES)they prayed and said, “You, Lord, ^(ET)who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen ²⁵ to take the place in ^(EU)this ministry and ^(EV)apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” ²⁶ And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

The Coming of the Holy Spirit

2 When ^(EW)the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. ² And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like ^(EX)a mighty rushing wind, and ^(EY)it filled the entire house where they were sitting. ³ And divided tongues ^(EZ)as of fire appeared to them and rested^[k] on each one of them. ⁴ And they were all ^(FA)filled with the Holy Spirit and began ^(FB)to speak in other tongues ^(FC)as the Spirit gave them utterance.

⁵ Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. ⁶ And ^(FD)at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. ⁷ And ^(FE)they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking ^(FF)Galileans? ⁸ And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? ⁹ Parthians and ^(FG)Medes and ^(FH)Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, ¹⁰ Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, ¹¹ both Jews and ^(FI)proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” ¹² And ^(FJ)all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” ¹³ But others ^(FK)mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”

Peter's Sermon at Pentecost

¹⁴ But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. ¹⁵ For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, ^(FL)since it is only the third hour of the day.^{[l] 16} But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:

²² “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, ^(FU)a man attested to you by God ^(FV)with ^(FW)mighty works and wonders and signs that ^(FX)God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— ²³ this Jesus,^{[m] (FY)}delivered up according to ^(FZ)the definite plan and ^(GA)foreknowledge of God, ^(GB)you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. ^24 (GC)God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because ^(GD)it was not possible for him to be held by it. ²⁵ For David says concerning him,

²⁹ “Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about ^(GK)the patriarch David ^(GL)that he both died and ^(GM)was buried, and ^(GN)his tomb is with us to this day. ^30 (GO)Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that ^(GP)God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, ³¹ he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that ^(GQ)he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. ³² This Jesus ^(GR)God raised up, ^(GS)and of that we all are witnesses. ^33 (GT)Being therefore ^(GU)exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from ^(GV)the Father ^(GW)the promise of the Holy Spirit, ^(GX)he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. ³⁴ For ^(GY)David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says,

³⁶ Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that ^(HA)God has made him ^(HB)both Lord and Christ, this Jesus ^(HC)whom you crucified.”

³⁷ Now when ^(HD)they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, ^(HE)what shall we do?” ³⁸ And Peter said to them, ^(HF)“Repent and ^(HG)be baptized every one of you ^(HH)in the name of Jesus Christ ^(HI)for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive ^(HJ)the gift of the Holy Spirit. ³⁹ For ^(HK)the promise is for you and ^(HL)for your children and for all ^(HM)who are far off, everyone ^(HN)whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” ⁴⁰ And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, ^(HO)“Save yourselves from this ^(HP)crooked generation.” ⁴¹ So those who received his word were baptized, and ^(HQ)there were added that day about three thousand souls.

The Fellowship of the Believers

⁴² And ^(HR)they devoted themselves to the apostles' ^(HS)teaching and the ^(HT)fellowship, to ^(HU)the breaking of bread and the prayers. ⁴³ And awe^[n] came upon every soul, and ^(HV)many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. ⁴⁴ And all who believed were together and ^(HW)had all things in common. ⁴⁵ And ^(HX)they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. ⁴⁶ And day by day, ^(HY)attending the temple ^(HZ)together and ^(IA)breaking bread in their homes, they received their food ^(IB)with glad and generous hearts, ⁴⁷ praising God and ^(IC)having favor with all the people. And the Lord ^(ID)added to their number ^(IE)day by day those who ^(IF)were being saved.

The Lame Beggar Healed

3 Now Peter and John were ^(IG)going up to the temple at ^(IH)the hour of prayer, ^(II)the ninth hour.^{[o] 2} And a man ^(IJ)lame from birth was being carried, ^(IK)whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate ^(IL)to ask alms of those entering the temple. ³ Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms. ⁴ And Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.” ⁵ And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them. ⁶ But Peter said, ^(IM)“I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. ^(IN)In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” ⁷ And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. ⁸ And ^(IO)leaping up, he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. ⁹ And ^(IP)all the people saw him walking and praising God, ¹⁰ and recognized him as the one who sat at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, asking for alms. And they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

Peter Speaks in Solomon's Portico

^11 (IQ)While he clung to Peter and John, all the people, utterly astounded, ran together to them in ^(IR)the portico called Solomon's. ¹² And when Peter saw it he addressed the people: “Men of Israel, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we have made him walk? ^13 (IS)The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, ^(IT)the God of our fathers, ^(IU)glorified his servant^[p] Jesus, whom ^(IV)you delivered over and ^(IW)denied in the presence of Pilate, ^(IX)when he had decided to release him. ¹⁴ But you denied ^(IY)the Holy and ^(IZ)Righteous One, and ^(JA)asked for a murderer to be granted to you, ¹⁵ and you killed ^(JB)the Author of life, ^(JC)whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. ¹⁶ And ^(JD)his name—by ^(JE)faith in his name—has made this man strong whom you see and know, and the faith that is ^(JF)through Jesus^[q] has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all.

¹⁷ “And now, brothers, I know that ^(JG)you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers. ¹⁸ But what God ^(JH)foretold ^(JI)by the mouth of all the prophets, that ^(JJ)his Christ would ^(JK)suffer, he thus fulfilled. ^19 (JL)Repent therefore, and ^(JM)turn back, that ^(JN)your sins may be blotted out, ²⁰ that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ ^(JO)appointed for you, Jesus, ^21 (JP)whom heaven must receive until the time for ^(JQ)restoring all the things about which ^(JR)God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago. ²² Moses said, ‘The Lord God will raise up for you ^(JS)a prophet like me from your brothers. You shall listen ^(JT)to him in whatever he tells you. ²³ And it shall be that every soul who does not listen to that prophet ^(JU)shall be destroyed from the people.’ ²⁴ And ^(JV)all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel and those who came after him, also proclaimed these days. ^25 (JW)You are the sons of the prophets and of ^(JX)the covenant that God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, ^(JY)‘And in your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed.’ ^26 (JZ)God, ^(KA)having raised up his servant, sent him to you first, ^(KB)to bless you ^(KC)by turning every one of you from your wickedness.”

Peter and John Before the Council

4 And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and ^(KD)the captain of the temple and ^(KE)the Sadducees came upon them, ² greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming ^(KF)in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. ³ And they arrested them and ^(KG)put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. ⁴ But many of those who had heard the word believed, and ^(KH)the number of the men came to about five thousand.

⁵ On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem, ⁶ with ^(KI)Annas the high priest and ^(KJ)Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. ⁷ And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, ^(KK)“By what power or ^(KL)by what name did you do this?” ⁸ Then Peter, ^(KM)filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders, ⁹ if we are being examined today ^(KN)concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, ¹⁰ let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that ^(KO)by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, ^(KP)whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well. ^11 (KQ)This Jesus^[r] is the stone that was ^(KR)rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone.^{[s] 12} And there is ^(KS)salvation ^(KT)in no one else, for ^(KU)there is no other ^(KV)name under heaven given among men^[t] by which we must be saved.”

^13 (KW)Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus. ¹⁴ But seeing the man who was healed ^(KX)standing beside them, ^(KY)they had nothing to say in opposition. ¹⁵ But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another, ¹⁶ saying, ^(KZ)“What shall we do with these men? For that ^(LA)a notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. ¹⁷ But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them ^(LB)to speak no more to anyone in this name.” ¹⁸ So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. ¹⁹ But Peter and John answered them, ^(LC)“Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, ²⁰ for ^(LD)we cannot but speak of what ^(LE)we have seen and heard.” ²¹ And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, ^(LF)because of the people, for all were praising God ^(LG)for what had happened. ²² For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed was more than forty years old.

The Believers Pray for Boldness

²³ When they were released, they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them. ²⁴ And when they heard it, they lifted their voices ^(LH)together to God and said, “Sovereign Lord, ^(LI)who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, ²⁵ who through the mouth of our father David, your servant,^[u] said by the Holy Spirit,

²⁷ for truly in this city there were gathered together against your ^(LM)holy servant Jesus, ^(LN)whom you anointed, both ^(LO)Herod and ^(LP)Pontius Pilate, along ^(LQ)with the Gentiles and ^(LR)the peoples of Israel, ^28 (LS)to do whatever your hand and ^(LT)your plan had predestined to take place. ²⁹ And now, Lord, ^(LU)look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all ^(LV)boldness, ³⁰ while ^(LW)you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed ^(LX)through the name of your ^(LY)holy servant Jesus.” ³¹ And when they had prayed, ^(LZ)the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and ^(MA)they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and ^(MB)continued to speak the word of God with boldness.

They Had Everything in Common
