The Witness John the Baptist

⁶ A man ^[a]came, one sent from God, and his name was ^(A)John. ^7 [b]He came ^[c](B)as a witness, to testify about the Light, ^(C)so that all might believe through him. ^8 [d](D)He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.

^9 [e]This was ^(E)the true Light ^[f]that, coming into the world, enlightens every person. ¹⁰ He was in the world, and ^(F)the world came into being through Him, and yet the world did not ^[g]know Him. ¹¹ He came to His ^[h]own, and His own people did not ^[i]accept Him. ¹² But ^[j]as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become ^(G)children of God, ^(H)to those who ^[k]believe in His name, ^13 (I)who were ^[l]born, not of ^[m]blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of a man, but of God.

¹⁰ For all who are of works of ^[a]the Law are under a curse; for it is written: “^(A)Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all the things written in the book of the Law, to do them.” ¹¹ Now, that ^(B)no one is justified ^[b]by ^[c]the Law before God is evident; for, “^[d](C)the righteous one will live by faith.” ^12 [e]However, the Law is not ^[f]of faith; on the contrary, “^(D)The person who performs ^[g]them will live by ^[h]them.” ¹³ Christ ^(E)redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written: “^(F)Cursed is everyone who hangs on ^(G)a ^[i]tree”—

²¹ Is the Law then contrary to the promises of God? ^[a](A)Far from it! For ^(B)if a law had been given that was able to impart life, then righteousness ^[b]would indeed have been ^[c]based on law. ²² But the Scripture has ^(C)confined ^[d]everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

²³ But before faith came, ^[e]we were kept in custody under the Law, ^(D)being confined for the faith that was destined to be revealed. ²⁴ Therefore the Law has become our ^[f](E)guardian to lead us to Christ, so that ^(F)we may be justified by faith.
