Pilate Sentences Jesus to Death
6 When the chief priests and the temple servants[a] saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!”
Pilate responded, “Take him and crucify him yourselves, since I find no grounds for charging him.”
7 “We have a law,” the Jews replied to him, “and according to that law he ought to die,(A) because he made himself the Son of God.”(B)
8 When Pilate heard this statement, he was more afraid than ever. 9 He went back into the headquarters(C) and asked Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus did not give him an answer.(D) 10 So Pilate said to him, “Do you refuse to speak to me? Don’t you know that I have the authority to release you and the authority to crucify you?”
11 “You would have no authority over me at all,” Jesus answered him, “if it hadn’t been given you from above. This is why the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.”(E)
12 From that moment Pilate kept trying[b] to release him. But the Jews shouted, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Anyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar!”
13 When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus outside. He sat down on the judge’s seat in a place called the Stone Pavement (but in Aramaic,[c] Gabbatha). 14 It was the preparation day for the Passover, and it was about noon.[d] Then he told the Jews, “Here is your king!”
15 They shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”
Pilate said to them, “Should I crucify your king?”
“We have no king but Caesar!” the chief priests answered.
16 Then he handed him over to be crucified.
The Crucifixion
Then they took Jesus away.[e] 17 Carrying(F) the cross by himself,(G) he went out to what is called Place of the Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. 18 There they crucified him and two others with him, one on either side, with Jesus in the middle. 19 Pilate also had a sign made and put on the cross. It said: Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.

6 As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!”
But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him.(A) As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”(B)
7 The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die,(C) because he claimed to be the Son of God.”(D)
8 When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, 9 and he went back inside the palace.(E) “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.(F) 10 “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”
11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.(G) Therefore the one who handed me over to you(H) is guilty of a greater sin.”
12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king(I) opposes Caesar.”
13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat(J) at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic(K) is Gabbatha). 14 It was the day of Preparation(L) of the Passover; it was about noon.(M)
“Here is your king,”(N) Pilate said to the Jews.
15 But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”
“Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.
“We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.
16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.(O)
The Crucifixion of Jesus(P)
So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. 17 Carrying his own cross,(Q) he went out to the place of the Skull(R) (which in Aramaic(S) is called Golgotha). 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others(T)—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.
19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth,(U) the king of the jews.(V)
