29 (A)Therefore Pilate came out to them and *said, “What accusation are you bringing against this Man?” 30 They answered and said to him, “If this Man were not [a]a criminal, we would not have handed Him over to you.” 31 So Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law.” The Jews said to him, “We are not [b]permitted to put anyone to death.” 32 This happened so that (B)the word of Jesus which He said, indicating what kind of death He was going to die, would be fulfilled.

33 Therefore Pilate (C)entered the Praetorium again, and summoned Jesus and said to Him, “(D)You are the King of the Jews?” 34 Jesus answered, “Are you saying this [c]on your own, or did others tell you about Me?” 35 Pilate answered, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests handed You over to me; what have You done?” 36 Jesus answered, (E)My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not [d]of this realm.” 37 Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, (F)You say correctly that I am a king. For this purpose I have been born, and for this I have come into the world: (G)to testify to the truth. (H)Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice.” 38 Pilate *said to Him, “What is truth?”

And after saying this, he (I)came out again to the Jews and *said to them, “(J)I find no grounds at all for charges in [e]His case.

29 Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?

30 They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.

31 Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:

32 That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.

33 Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?

34 Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?

35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?

36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.

29 (A)So Pilate went outside to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” 30 They answered him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.” 31 Pilate said to them, (B)“Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.” 32 (C)This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken (D)to show by what kind of death he was going to die.

My Kingdom Is Not of This World

33 (E)So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, (F)“Are you the King of the Jews?” 34 Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?” 35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?” 36 Jesus answered, (G)“My kingdom (H)is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, (I)my servants would have been fighting, that (J)I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” 37 Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, (K)“You say that I am a king. (L)For this purpose I was born and for this purpose (M)I have come into the world—(N)to bear witness to the truth. (O)Everyone who is (P)of the truth (Q)listens to my voice.” 38 Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”

After he had said this, (R)he went back outside to the Jews and told them, (S)“I find no guilt in him.
