The Work of the Holy Spirit

26 “When the Advocate(A) comes, whom I will send to you from the Father(B)—the Spirit of truth(C) who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.(D) 27 And you also must testify,(E) for you have been with me from the beginning.(F)

16 “All this(G) I have told you so that you will not fall away.(H) They will put you out of the synagogue;(I) in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.(J) They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.(K) I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember(L) that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you,(M) but now I am going to him who sent me.(N) None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’(O) Rather, you are filled with grief(P) because I have said these things. But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate(Q) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.(R) When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin,(S) because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness,(T) because I am going to the Father,(U) where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world(V) now stands condemned.

12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.(W) 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth,(X) comes, he will guide you into all the truth.(Y) He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine.(Z) That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

26 “When the [a](A)Helper comes, (B)whom I will send to you from the Father, namely, (C)the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, (D)He will testify about Me, 27 and [b](E)you are testifying as well, because you have been with Me (F)from the beginning.

Jesus’ Warning

16 (G)These things I have spoken to you so that you will not [c]be (H)led into sin. They will [d](I)ban you from the synagogue, yet (J)an hour is coming for everyone (K)who kills you to think that he is offering a [e]service to God. These things they will do (L)because they have not known the Father nor Me. But these things I have spoken to you, (M)so that when their hour comes, you [f]may remember that I told you of them. However, I did not say these things to you (N)at the beginning, because I was with you.

The Holy Spirit Promised

“But now (O)I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘(P)Where are You going?’ But because I have said these things to you, (Q)grief has filled your heart. But I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I am leaving; for if I do not leave, the [g](R)Helper will not come to you; but if I go, (S)I will send Him to you. And He, when He comes, will convict the world regarding sin, and righteousness, and judgment: regarding sin, (T)because they do not believe in Me; 10 and regarding (U)righteousness, because (V)I am going to the Father and you no longer are going to see Me; 11 (W)and regarding judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

12 “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them at the present time. 13 But when He, (X)the Spirit of truth, comes, He will (Y)guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14 He will (Z)glorify Me, for He will take from Mine and will disclose it to you. 15 (AA)All things that the Father has are Mine; this is why I said that He takes from Mine and will disclose it to you.

26 “But I will send you the Advocate[a]—the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about me. 27 And you must also testify about me because you have been with me from the beginning of my ministry.

16 “I have told you these things so that you won’t abandon your faith. For you will be expelled from the synagogues, and the time is coming when those who kill you will think they are doing a holy service for God. This is because they have never known the Father or me. Yes, I’m telling you these things now, so that when they happen, you will remember my warning. I didn’t tell you earlier because I was going to be with you for a while longer.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and not one of you is asking where I am going. Instead, you grieve because of what I’ve told you. But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate[b] won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment. The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me. 10 Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more. 11 Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged.

12 “There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. 14 He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.’

26-27 “When the Friend I plan to send you from the Father comes—the Spirit of Truth issuing from the Father—he will confirm everything about me. You, too, from your side must give your confirming evidence, since you are in this with me from the start.”

16 1-4 “I’ve told you these things to prepare you for rough times ahead. They are going to throw you out of the meeting places. There will even come a time when anyone who kills you will think he’s doing God a favor. They will do these things because they never really understood the Father. I’ve told you these things so that when the time comes and they start in on you, you’ll be well-warned and ready for them.

The Friend Will Come

4-7 “I didn’t tell you this earlier because I was with you every day. But now I am on my way to the One who sent me. Not one of you has asked, ‘Where are you going?’ Instead, the longer I’ve talked, the sadder you’ve become. So let me say it again, this truth: It’s better for you that I leave. If I don’t leave, the Friend won’t come. But if I go, I’ll send him to you.

8-11 “When he comes, he’ll expose the error of the godless world’s view of sin, righteousness, and judgment: He’ll show them that their refusal to believe in me is their basic sin; that righteousness comes from above, where I am with the Father, out of their sight and control; that judgment takes place as the ruler of this godless world is brought to trial and convicted.

12-15 “I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t handle them now. But when the Friend comes, the Spirit of the Truth, he will take you by the hand and guide you into all the truth there is. He won’t draw attention to himself, but will make sense out of what is about to happen and, indeed, out of all that I have done and said. He will honor me; he will take from me and deliver it to you. Everything the Father has is also mine. That is why I’ve said, ‘He takes from me and delivers to you.’

26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

27 And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

16 These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.

They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.

And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.

But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.

But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?

But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.

Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

Of sin, because they believe not on me;

10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;

11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.

13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
