12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.(A) 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.(B) 14 You are my friends(C) if you do what I command.(D) 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.(E) 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you(F) so that you might go and bear fruit(G)—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.(H) 17 This is my command: Love each other.(I)

12 “This is (A)My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. 13 (B)Greater love has no one than this, that a person will (C)lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are My (D)friends if (E)you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, because (F)all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you. 16 (G)You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and (H)bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that (I)whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you. 17 This (J)I command you, that you love one another.

Disciples’ Relation to Each Other

12 “This is My commandment, that you [a]love and unselfishly seek the best for one another, just as I have loved you. 13 No one has greater love [nor stronger commitment] than to lay down his own life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you keep on doing what I command you. 15 I do not call you servants any longer, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you [My] friends, because I have revealed to you everything that I have heard from My Father. 16 You have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you and I have appointed and placed and purposefully planted you, so that you would go and bear fruit and keep on bearing, and that your fruit will remain and be lasting, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name [as My representative] He may give to you. 17 This [is what] I command you: that you love and unselfishly seek the best for one another.

12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

17 These things I command you, that ye love one another.

12 (A) Now I tell you to love each other, as I have loved you. 13 The greatest way to show love for friends is to die for them. 14 And you are my friends, if you obey me. 15 Servants don't know what their master is doing, and so I don't speak to you as my servants. I speak to you as my friends, and I have told you everything my Father has told me.

16 You did not choose me. I chose you and sent you out to produce fruit, the kind of fruit that will last. Then my Father will give you whatever you ask for in my name.[a] 17 So I command you to love each other.
